Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 51
In this Sarga, a great fight ensues between Jaṭāyu and Rāvaṇa. In that fight, Jaṭāyu, unmindful of the sharp and deadly arrows shot at him by Rāvaṇa, kills Rāvaṇa’s charioteer and the horses of his chariot. Then he knocks off the chariot and its yoke. Rāvaṇa falls down on the ground. All creatures feel happy and cheer Jaṭāyu .
But Jaṭāyu is tired in the fight, because of his age. Rāvaṇa rises into the sky again. Jaṭāyu musters his strength and blocks Rāvaṇa again and challenges him to fight with him. He warns Rāvaṇa that it is because his death is near that he ventured to abduct Seetā.
He then plunges again on Rāvaṇa and digs his beak and talons into Rāvaṇa’s back. He shears off the ten left arms of Rāvaṇa. But in place of the severed arms, new arms emerge immediately. Rāvaṇa cuts off the wings, flanks and feet of Jaṭāyu . Jaṭāyu falls on the ground. Seetā goes to him and cries holding him, as if he were her own kin.
3.51.1 இத்யுக்தஸ்ய யதாந்யாயம்
ராவணஸ்ய ஜடாயுஷா ।
க்ருத்தஸ்யாக்நிநிபாஸ்ஸர்வா
ரேஜுர்விம்ஸதித்ருஷ்டய: ॥
ityuktasya yathānyāyam
rāvaṇasya jaṭāyuṣā ।
kruddhasyāgninibhāssarvā
rējurviṃṡatidṛṣṭayaḥ ॥
When Jaṭāyu spoke thus as can be expected,
Rāvaṇa was outraged and all his
twenty eyes blazed like fire.
3.51.2 ஸம்ரக்தநயந: கோபாத்
தப்தகாஞ்சநகுண்டல: ।
ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரோऽபிதுத்ராவ
பதகேந்த்ரமமர்ஷண: ॥
saṃraktanayanaḥ kōpāt
taptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ।
rākṣasēndrō'bhidudrāva
patagēndramamarṣaṇaḥ ॥
The irritable lord of Rākshasas
with ear-pendants made of gold purified in fire,
his eyes turning blood-red with anger,
pounced upon the king of birds.
3.51.3 ஸ ஸம்ப்ரஹாரஸ்துமுல
ஸ்தயோஸ்தஸ்மிந்மஹாவநே ।
பபூவ வாதோத்ததயோ:
மேகயோர்ககநே யதா ॥
sa samprahārastumula
stayōstasminmahāvanē ।
babhūva vātōddhatayōḥ
mēghayōrgaganē yathā ॥
There ensued a violent fight
between the two in the great Vana,
which was like the clash of clouds
in the sky whirled by the wind.
3.51.4 தத்பபூவாத்புதம் யுத்தம்
க்ருத்ரராக்ஷஸயோஸ்ததா ।
ஸபக்ஷயோர்மால்யவதோ:
மஹாபர்வதயோரிவ ॥
tadbabhūvādbhutaṃ yuddham
gṛdhrarākṣasayōstadā ।
sapakṣayōrmālyavatōḥ
mahāparvatayōriva ॥
The fight that ensued then
between the eagle and Rākshasa
was spectacular as if it were between
two winged crests of the Mālyavati range.
3.51.5 ததோ நாலீகநாராசை:
தீக்ஷ்ணாக்ரைஸ்ச விகர்ணிபி: ।
அப்யவர்ஷந்மஹாகோரை:
க்ருத்ரராஜம் மஹாபல: ॥
tatō nālīkanārācaiḥ
tīkṣṇāgraiṡca vikarṇibhiḥ ।
abhyavarṣanmahāghōraiḥ
gṛdhrarājaṃ mahābalaḥ ॥
That Rākshasa of immense strength
then showered the king of eagles
with terrible Nāleeka, Nārāca and Vikarṇi
arrows with sharp heads.
3.51.6 ஸ தாநி ஸரஜாலாநி
க்ருத்ர: பத்த்ரரதேஸ்வர: ।
ஜடாயு: ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ
ராவணாஸ்த்ராணி ஸம்யுகே ॥
sa tāni ṡarajālāni
gṛdhraḥ pattrarathēṡvaraḥ ।
jaṭāyuḥ pratijagrāha
rāvaṇāstrāṇi saṃyugē ॥
That eagle, the lord of all birds,
sustained with ease that torrent of arrows,
the weapons of Rāvaṇa, in that fight.
3.51.7 தஸ்ய தீக்ஷ்ணநகாப்யாம் து
சரணாப்யாம் மஹாபல: ।
சகார பஹுதா காத்ரே
வ்ரணாந்பதகஸத்தம: ॥
tasya tīkṣṇanakhābhyāṃ tu
caraṇābhyāṃ mahābalaḥ ।
cakāra bahudhā gātrē
vraṇānpatagasattamaḥ ॥
That best of the birds of immense strength,
with the sharp nails of its feet,
made many a scar on the body (of Rāvaṇa).
3.51.8 அத க்ரோதாத்தஸக்ரீவோ
ஜக்ராஹ தஸ மார்கணாந் ।
ம்ருத்யுதண்டநிபாந்கோராந்
ஸத்ருமர்தநகாங்க்ஷயா ॥
atha krōdhāddaṡagrīvō
jagrāha daṡa mārgaṇān ।
mṛtyudaṇḍanibhānghōrān
ṡatrumardanakāṅkṣayā ॥
Then the ten-necked one became angry
and took out ten dreadful arrows
that looked like the baton of Death
to put an end to the enemy.
3.51.9 ஸ தைர்பாணைர்மஹாவீர்ய:
பூர்ணமுக்தைரஜிஹ்மகை: ।
பிபேத நிஸிதைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
க்ருத்ரம் கோரைஸ்ஸிலீமுகை: ॥
sa tairbāṇairmahāvīryaḥ
pūrṇamuktairajihmagaiḥ ।
bibhēda niṡitaistīkṣṇaiḥ
gṛdhraṃ ghōraiṡṡilīmukhaiḥ ॥
With those terrible, sharp
and stinging arrows of steel heads
that flew straight, released from the
string that was pulled to the maximum,
he of great valor, tore apart the bird.
3.51.10 ஸ ராக்ஷஸரதே பஸ்யந்
ஜாநகீம் பாஷ்பலோசநாம் ।
அசிந்தயித்வா தாந்பாணாந்
ராக்ஷஸம் ஸமபித்ரவத் ॥
sa rākṣasarathē paṡyan
jānakīṃ bāṣpalōcanām ।
acintayitvā tānbāṇān
rākṣasaṃ samabhidravat ॥
Seeing Jānaki on the chariot of the Rākshasa
with her eyes brimming with tears,
he rushed on to the Rākshasa,
unmindful of those arrows.
3.51.11 ததோऽஸ்ய ஸஸரம் சாபம்
முக்தாமணிவிபூஷிதம் ।
சரணாப்யாம் மஹாதேஜா
பபஞ்ஜ பதகேஸ்வர: ॥
tatō'sya saṡaraṃ cāpam
muktāmaṇivibhūṣitam ।
caraṇābhyāṃ mahātējā
babhañja patagēṡvaraḥ ॥
Then the lordly bird of supreme prowess, with his feet,
broke his bow that was adorned with pearls and gems.
3.51.12 ததோऽந்யத்தநுராதாய
ராவண: க்ரோதமூர்சித: ।
வவர்ஷ ஸரவர்ஷாணி
ஸதஸோऽத ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
tatō'nyaddhanurādāya
rāvaṇaḥ krōdhamūrchitaḥ ।
vavarṣa ṡaravarṣāṇi
ṡataṡō'tha sahasraṡaḥ ॥
Picking up another bow, Rāvaṇa,
lost in rage, rained showers of arrows,
hundreds and thousands of them.
3.51.13 ஸரைராவாரிதஸ்தஸ்ய
ஸம்யுகே பதகேஸ்வர: ।
குலாயமுபஸம்ப்ராப்த:
பக்ஷீவ ப்ரபபௌ ததா ॥
ṡarairāvāritastasya
saṃyugē patagēṡvaraḥ ।
kulāyamupasamprāptaḥ
pakṣīva prababhau tadā ॥
That lordly bird, in that battle,
covered all over with arrows,
shone like a bird ensconced in its nest.
3.51.14 ஸ தாநி ஸரவர்ஷாணி
பக்ஷாப்யாம் ச விதூயச ।
சரணாப்யாம் மஹாதேஜா
பபஞ்ஜாஸ்ய மஹத்தநு: ॥
sa tāni ṡaravarṣāṇi
pakṣābhyāṃ ca vidhūyaca ।
caraṇābhyāṃ mahātējā
babhañjāsya mahaddhanuḥ ॥
Shaking off those torrents
of arrows from his wings,
that bird of massive strength
broke the great bow with his feet.
3.51.15 தச்சாக்நிஸத்ருஸம் தீப்தம்
ராவணஸ்ய ஸராவரம் ।
பக்ஷாப்யாம் ஸ மஹாவீர்யோ
வ்யாதுநோத்பதகேஸ்வர: ॥
taccāgnisadṛṡaṃ dīptam
rāvaṇasya ṡarāvaram ।
pakṣābhyāṃ sa mahāvīryō
vyādhunōtpatagēṡvaraḥ ॥
That lordly bird of extraordinary prowess,
with his wings, battered and threw down
Rāvaṇa’s armor that shone like fire.
3.51.16 காஞ்சநோரஸ்சதாந்திவ்யாந்
பிஸாசவதநாந்கராந் ।
தாம்ஸ்சாஸ்ய ஜவஸம்பந்நாந்
ஜகாந ஸமரே பலீ ॥
kāñcanōraṡchadāndivyān
piṡācavadanānkharān ।
tāṃṡcāsya javasampannān
jaghāna samarē balī ॥
And the strong bird killed in the fray
the extremely swift, splendid and ghoul-faced mules
that were covered with gold coats of mail.
3.51.17 வரம் த்ரிவேணுஸம்பந்நம்
காமகம் பாவகார்சிஷம் ।
மணிஹேமவிசித்ராங்கம்
பபஞ்ஜ ச மஹாரதம் ॥
varaṃ trivēṇusampannam
kāmagaṃ pāvakārciṣam ।
maṇihēmavicitrāṅgam
babhañja ca mahāratham ॥
He smashed the splendid and great chariot and its yoke,
all of whose parts were made of gold and gems and
which moved at one’s will and shone like fire.
3.51.18 பூர்ணசந்த்ரப்ரதீகாஸம்
சத்த்ரம் ச வ்யஜநைஸ்ஸஹ ।
பாதயாமாஸ வேகேந
க்ராஹிபீ ராக்ஷஸைஸ்ஸஹ ॥
pūrṇacandrapratīkāṡam
chattraṃ ca vyajanaissaha ।
pātayāmāsa vēgēna
grāhibhī rākṣasaissaha ॥
And by his swift onslaught
he knocked down the umbrella
that shone like the full moon and
the fly-whisks and also
the Rākshasas who plied them.
3.51.19 ஸாரதேஸ்சாஸ்ய வேகேந
துண்டேநைவ மஹச்சிர: ।
புநர்வ்யபாஹரச்ச்ரீமாந்
பக்ஷிராஜோ மஹாபல: ॥
sārathēṡcāsya vēgēna
tuṇḍēnaiva mahacchiraḥ ।
punarvyapāharacchrīmān
pakṣirājō mahābalaḥ ॥
Again, the mighty strong king of birds
swiftly attacked, and with his beak
knocked off the mighty head of the charioteer.
3.51.20 ஸ பக்நதந்வா விரதோ
ஹதாஸ்வோ ஹதஸாரதி: ।
அங்கேநாதாய வைதேஹீம்
பபாத புவி ராவண: ॥
sa bhagnadhanvā virathō
hatāṡvō hatasārathiḥ ।
aṅkēnādāya vaidēhīm
papāta bhuvi rāvaṇaḥ ॥
With his bow broken and lacking a chariot
and the charioteer and horses killed,
Rāvaṇa fell down on the ground
carrying Vaidēhi on his lap.
3.51.21 த்ருஷ்ட்வா நிபதிதம் பூமௌ
ராவணம் பக்நவாஹநம் ।
ஸாதுஸாத்விதி பூதாநி
க்ருத்ரராஜமபூஜயந் ॥
dṛṣṭvā nipatitaṃ bhūmau
rāvaṇaṃ bhagnavāhanam ।
sādhusādhviti bhūtāni
gṛdhrarājamapūjayan ॥
Seeing Rāvaṇa fall on the ground
and his vehicle broken down,
all creatures hailed the king of eagles
saying, ‘Well done! Well done!’

3.51.21 த்ருஷ்ட்வா நிபதிதம் பூமௌ
ராவணம் பக்நவாஹநம் ।
ஸாதுஸாத்விதி பூதாநி
க்ருத்ரராஜமபூஜயந் ॥
dṛṣṭvā nipatitaṃ bhūmau
rāvaṇaṃ bhagnavāhanam ।
sādhusādhviti bhūtāni
gṛdhrarājamapūjayan ॥
Seeing Rāvaṇa fall on the ground
and his vehicle broken down,
all creatures hailed the king of eagles
saying, ‘Well done! Well done!’
