Holy shrine of Banashankari Amma temple or Banashankari temple is located in Tilakaaranya forest at Cholachagudd nearby Badami in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. Fundamentally, the abode of deity ‘Shakambhari’, the sixth-incarnated embodiment of warrior-goddess Parvati was constructed by Kalyani Chalukya kings of 7th century.

As the legend goes, a demon named as Durgamasur started spreading his fear via devilish act of shedding blood of innocent natives of the nearby villages. Scared people pleaded lords to save them from his tyranny. In response, lords sent goddess Shakambari to help the people. The goddess incarnated from the pious fire of Yagna (fire sacrifice). A fiery battle started between the demon and the goddess. Eventually, Durgamasura was massacred by the holy hands of Goddess as a dreadful encounter.
