  • BHU VARAHA SWAMY TEMPLE, THIRUMALA

Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple, Tirumala Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

This temple dedicated to Lord Varahadeva is older than the Sri Venkateswara Temple on the Tirumala Tirupati hill. Thirumala was earlier called as Adivaraha Kshetra. It is said that Lord Bhu Varaha Swamy had granted land to Lord Venkateswara to reside on the Tirumala hills. As a gesture of gratitude, Lord Venkateswara had granted Lord Bhu Varaha Swamy the privilege of first darshan and naivedyam(offering of bhoga). As per tradition, a devotee has the darshan of Lord Bhu Varaha Swamy first before having the darshan of Lord Venkateswara.

The statue of Lord Varahaswami in Tirumala is in the form of Adi Varaha, resembling the way Adi Varaha Murti has been described in the Vaikhanasa Agama texts. In the revered Hindu text, Atri Samhita or Samurtarchanadhikara, it has been mentioned that the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Varaha is worshipped in three different forms, namely Adi Varaha, Pralaya Varaha and Yajna varaha.
