Patteswaram ...Worship to Win Devi Gnanambika
It is not uncommon to see that the Divine Mother rules supreme in most of the Siva temples across the country. Numerous temples like the Madurai Meenakshi and the Chidambaram temple are examples of this. What is once constructed as a Shiva temple eventually becomes a Devi shrine. One such temple is located at Patteeswaram in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.
The ruling goddess of this temple is known by many names such as Vishnu durga, Durga lakshmi, Navasakthi Nayaki, Navayoga Nayaki, Navagraha Nayaki, Navaratri Nayaki, Navakoti Nayaki, to name a few. She is said to protect the northern gate of this temple.
The temple has five majestic gopurams and the splendid architecture of this place can be attributed to the styles of the Pallavas, Cholas and the Nayaks. Traditionally, the ruling deity is Dhenupureeswarar or Patteeswarar and the goddess is His Consort, also known as Gnanambika.
The place has a long association with Lord Rama and many other sages. It is also believed that sage Viswamitra got enlightened here on Gayatri Mahamantra and was conferred the title - Brahmarishi.
The goddess is a benevolent Mother who grants all the wishes of Her devotees, just like the Kalpaka Tree. She was the crowning triumph of the Chola emperors. Seated on the Mahishan, She appears as the Simhavahini, with Her eight hands holding the conch, wheel, bow, dart, sword and a parrot. Her face beams with a glowing smile.
People believe that everyday during the Rahu kalam, Rahu comes and worships Durga. So Rahu's deity shall reward the devotee who worships Her during that hour. Worship is also considered important on full moon days when She is supposed to be the most powerful and valiant.
The offerings to the goddess may be anything from sarees to garlands made out of lemon. Generally red floral garlands are mostly sought after as they serve to cancel the adverse influence of Mars.
Among those who worshipped the goddess are Kamadhenu - the celestial cow, Lord Rama and the sage Viswamitra. The temple's tank is called the Rama Theertham. Tirugnana Sambandar and Ramalingar have composed many hymns in praise of Her.
The festivals celebrated in this temple include 'Vaikasi Visakam' for about ten days every year. The special festival of the temple is the 'Muthupandal' festival where a palanquin of pearls is lifted by 100 bearers. The palanquin starts at noon from a place called Sakthimutram and reaches Patteswaram. During Navaratri, special 'kolu' is arranged along with poojas for the goddess. It is said that the winners worship Her and the worshippers win Her.
