நடமாடும் தெய்வமென வர்ணிக்கப்படுபவர் காஞ்சி மஹா பெரியவர். இவர் தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு அன்று என்னென்ன செய்வார் என்பது உங்களுக்கு தெரியுமா?
அன்று காலையில், உலக மக்கள் நலமுடன் வாழவும், பரந்த மனம் பெறவும் வேண்டி 'ஆத்ம பூஜை' (தியானம்) செய்வார். புத்தாண்டிற்கு இரண்டு நாள் முன்னதாகவே காஞ்சி மடம் களை கட்ட ஆரம்பித்து விடும். மடத்தை சுத்தம் செய்து, தென்னங் குருத்து, வாழை, மா இலையால் தோரணம் கட்டச் சொல்வார் பெரியவர். புத்தாண்டுக்கு முதல்நாள் இரவில், பெரியவர் தினமும் பூஜிக்கும் திரிபுர சுந்தரி சந்திர மவுலீஸ்வரர் சந்நிதி- கனிகள், காய்கறி, மலர்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்படும். இரண்டு பெரிய குத்து விளக்குகளை அங்கே வைப்பார்கள், பெரிய கண்ணாடி, சந்தனம், குங்குமம், வாசனை திரவியங்கள், பூஜை பொருட்கள் அங்கே வைக்கப்படும். ஒரு ரூபாய் நாணயங்கள் குவிக்கப்படும்.
பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க புத்தாண்டுக்கு முதல்நாளே பக்தர்கள் ஏராளமாக கூடியிருப்பார்கள்.
புத்தாண்டு அன்று காலையில் சந்திர மவுலீஸ்வரரைத் தரிசனம் செய்யும் பெரியவர் கண்ணாடியில் முகம் பார்ப்பார். பானகம், நீர் மோர், வடைப்பருப்பு நைவேத்யம் செய்து பக்தர்களுக்கு வழங்க உத்தரவிடுவார். சங்கீத வித்வான்கள் அன்றைய தினம் பாடுவார்கள். அதை ரசித்துக் கேட்பார். தொடர்ந்து, விஷ்ணு சகஸ்ரநாமம், நாராயண ஸ்ம்ருதி, லலிதா சகஸ்ரநாமம் பாராயணம் நடக்கும். பாராயணம் முடிவதற்குள் காமாட்சியம்மன் கோவிலுக்கு சென்று திரும்புவார்.
பின், பெரியவர் முன்னிலையில் மடத்து வேதியர்களால் அந்த ஆண்டுக்குரிய பஞ்சாங்கம் வாசிக்கப்படும். பஞ்சாங்கம் கேட்பதின் பலன் பற்றி முன்கூட்டியே பக்தர்களுக்கு பெரியவர் விளக்கமளிப்பார். நட்சத்திரம், திதி, வாரம், யோகம் ஆகியவை பற்றி கேட்பதால் பாவ நிவர்த்தி, ஆயுள்விருத்தி, லட்சுமி கடாட்சம், செயல்பாடுகளில் வெற்றி, நோயற்ற வாழ்வு கிடைக்கும் என்பார்.
இதையடைத்து சந்திரமவுலீஸ்வரருக்கு தீபாராதனை நடக்கும். அப்போது புளி, வெள்ளம், வேப்பிலை கொழுந்து சேர்த்து கலந்த பச்சடி நைவேத்யம் செய்யப்படும். இதற்கு 'நிம்பகந்தளம்' என்று பெயர். மனிதவாழ்வில் இனிப்பு, புளிப்பு, காப்பான சம்பவங்கள் நிகழும். இவற்றை அனுசரித்து வாழ கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்பதற்காக இந்த பிரசாதம் எல்லாருக்கும் வழங்கப்படும் என அவர் சொல்வார்.
புத்தாண்டன்று பெற்றோர், குரு, தெய்வத்தை வணங்குமாறும், 'லோகா சமஸ்தா சுகினோ பவந்து' (உலகம் நன்றாக இருக்கட்டும்) என்றும் கூறி பக்தர்களுக்கு தனித்தனியாக ஆசி வழங்குவார். அப்போது காமாட்சி, ஆதிசங்கரர், ஸ்ரீபாலா படங்களையும் ஒரு ரூபாய் நாணயத்தையும் வழங்குவார். அந்நாளில் அவர் சிறிது கூட ஓய்வின்றி, மாலை வரை பக்தர்களுக்கு ஆசியளிப்பார். பிக்ஷைக்கு கூட போக மாட்டார். இடையிடையே சிறிது பருப்பு, பானகம் மட்டும் அந்த இடத்தில் இருந்தே எடுத்துக் கொள்வார். பக்தர்களை அன்று நடக்கும் 'சந்தர்ப்பனை' யில் (அன்னதானம்) சாப்பிட்டுச் செல்லுமாறு கூறுவார்.
தரிசனத்திற்கு வரும் குழந்தைகள் மீது பெரியவருக்கு உயிர். அவர்களைப் பாடச்சொல்லி, தானும் சேர்ந்து பாடுவார். அந்த பாட்டிலுள்ள கருத்துக்களை அவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துக்கூறி தானும் குழந்தையாகவே மாறிவிடுவார். அவர்களுக்கு சிரவணன் தன் பெற்றோரை சுமந்து சென்றது (ராமாயண சம்பவம்) உள்ளிட்ட கதைகளை கூறி பெற்றோருக்கு பணிந்து நடக்க அறிவுரை சொல்வார்.
மஹா பெரியவர் இன்றும் அந்தர்யாமியாய் (மறைவாய்) இருந்து நமக்கு புத்தாண்டு ஆசிகளை அள்ளித்தருகிறார். அவரையும் நமது காஞ்சி ஆச்சார்யர்களையும் புத்தாண்டன்று மறக்காமல் வணங்குவோமா!

Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava is always described as the Living God. Do you know what all he does on the Tamizh New Year's day?
On that day, in the morning, he meditates (Aathma Pooja or Dhyaanam) for the well-being of all the people in the world and for the people to be broad-minded as well. Kanchi Mutt adorns the festive look two days before the Tamizh New Year's day. Maha Periyavaa orders to clean the mutt and decorate with Plantain leaves, tender shoot of the coconut tree and mango leaves. On the day before the Tamizh New Year's day, the deities worshipped on a daily basis by Maha Periyavaa, Goddess Tiripurasundari and Lord Sri Chandramouleeshwarar, are adorned with vegetables, fruits and flowers. Two big decorative oil lamps ("Kuthu Vilakku") are placed near the deities. A big mirror, sandal paste, vermillion powder ("Kungumam"), scented items or items with nice fragrance and other prayer ("Pooja") items are kept there as well. A lot of one rupee coins will also be kept in a huge pile.
A huge number of Devotees will be present on the day before the New Year's Day to see Periyavaa ("Dharshan").
On the day of Tamizh New Year, after worshipping Sri Chandramouleeshwarar, Maha Periyavaa sees his face in the big mirror. Jaggery water ("Paanagam"), Watery Butter Bilk ("Neermor") and "Vadaiparuppu" (Savory item made with Lentils) are first offered to the God and then distributed to the devotees. Well-Trained Carnatic singers will sing on that day in front of Sri Maha Periyavaa, who enjoys listening to the same. After this programme, everyone will chant "Vishnu Sahasranamam", "Vishnu Sthuthi" and "Lalitha Sahasranamam". Before the chanting is over, Maha Periyavaa worships at the Goddess Kamakshi Amman temple and returns.
After this, Vedic Pundits recite the details of the year's astrological calendar that is obtained from elaborate astronomical calculations specified in the "Vedhaas", followed by Sanatana Dharma ("Panchaangam"), in front of Maha Periyavaa. Maha Periyava informs the devotees about the result of listening to the details in the "Panchaangam" before the recital. He says that listening to and understanding about the stars ("Nakshatra"), the weekday ("Vara") and the planetary positions based on calculations ("Thithi", "Yoga") yields removal of sins, long life, wealth through the Goddess Mahalakshmi's blessing and victory in all good endeavors undertaken.
Once the recital is complete, oil lamp is lit and shown in reverence to Lord Sri Chandramouleeshwarar. At that time, a paste or "pachadi" made from the combination of tamarind, jaggery and neem leaves are offered to the God. This offering is known as "NimbakandhaLam". In human life, there will be a lot of situations that are sweet, sour or salty. Hence, in order for people to adjust to all such kinds of situations, Sri Maha Periyava asks that this offering be distributed among everyone.
On the day of Tamizh New Year, Sri Maha Periyava tells everyone to pay respect to their parents, teachers ("Guru") and the God. Also he blesses all his devotees individually and states "Loga Samasthaa Sukhino Bavanthu" (Let the world be good and happy). At that time, he gives photos of Sri Adhi Shankara, Goddess Kamakshi Amman and Sri Bala along with the one rupee coin to each of his devotees. On that day, he blesses all his devotees without resting even for a short while. He doesn't even have his food. At few intervals, he only has some lentils ("Paruppu") and jaggery water ("Paanagam"). He requests the devotees to eat the sacred food offering ("Annadhaanam" or "Sandharpanai") on that day.
Sri Maha Periyava loves the children who come along with the devotees. He asks them to sing and also sings along with them. He explains the meaning of the song to them and turns into a child himself. He tells them the story of Sravanan (in Ramayana), who carries his old parents through the forest, and advices the children to be obedient to their parents.
Sri Maha Periyava still lives in an omniscient form amongst us even today and blesses us with New Year wishes. Let us pray to him on the day of Tamizh New Year without fail!
