Shiva Maha Purana mentions the story of Kala bhairava. The legend says that once a controversy arose among Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma that who was the greatest of them. In the arguments Brahmaji passed a comment which made Shiva furious. And in his furious forms he cut off one of the faces of Lord Brahma. Outraged Lord Shiva took a destructive form of Kala Bhairava. In this Avatar, he came riding on a black dog with a baton in one hand. This horrifying form of Lord Shiva scared the demigods. Seeing this, Lord Brahma apologized in front of Kala Bhairava and realized his mistake. After being convinced by all the Gods, saints, sages and Lord Brahma himself, Lord Shiva restored to his original form and calmed down.
This terrified the demigods (Devas) and humans and this form of Shiva is believed to punish sinners and he carries a ‘Danda’ – a rod to punish.
