    Baala Kaanda - Sarga 50
    In this Sarga, king Janaka receives Viṡwāmitra, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa and all the Munis that came along to attend the great Yajña being performed by him.
    1.50.1
    தத: ப்ராகுத்தராம் கத்வா ராம: ஸௌமித்ரிணா ஸஹ ।
    விஸ்வாமித்ரம் புரஸ்க்ருத்ய யஜ்ஞவாடமுபாகமத் ॥
    tataḥ prāguttarāṃ gatvā rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ।
    viṡvāmitraṃ puraskṛtya yajñavāṭamupāgamat ॥
    Then Rāma, along with Lakshmaṇa, led by Viṡwāmitra
    travelled in the northeasterly direction
    and reached the place of (Janaka's) Yajña (in Mithilā).
    This Ṡlōka connects back to Sarga 31. After Rāma killed Tāṭaka and after Viṡwāmitra completed his Yajña in Siddhāṡrama all the Ṛshis started a journey on one hundred carriages to attend the Yajña to be performed by Janaka in Mithilā. This Ṡlōka refers to the end of that journey.
    1.50.2
    ராமஸ்து முநிஸார்தூலமுவாச ஸஹலக்ஷ்மண: ।
    ஸாத்வீ யஜ்ஞஸம்ருத்திர்ஹி ஜநகஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ॥
    rāmastu muniṡārdūlamuvāca sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
    sādhvī yajñasamṛddhirhi janakasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
    Rāma along with Lakshmaṇa, shared his wonder
    with Viṡwāmitra, the tiger among Munis:
    “Aren't these preparations for the Yajña
    by the Mahātma Janaka amazing?”
    1.50.3-4
    பஹூநீஹ ஸஹஸ்ராணி நாநாதேஸநிவாஸிநாம் ।
    ப்ராஹ்மணாநாம் மஹாபாக வேதாத்யயநஸாலிநாம் ॥
    ருஷிவாடாஸ்ச த்ருஸ்யந்தே ஸகடீஸதஸங்குலா: ।
    தேஸோ விதீயதாம் ப்ரஹ்மந் யத்ர வத்ஸ்யாமஹே வயம் ॥
    bahūnīha sahasrāṇi nānādēṡanivāsinām ।
    brāhmaṇānāṃ mahābhāga vēdādhyayanaṡālinām ॥
    ṛṣivāṭāṡca dṛṡyantē ṡakaṭīṡatasaṅkulāḥ ।
    dēṡō vidhīyatāṃ brahman yatra vatsyāmahē vayam ॥
    O blessed soul! There are many camps of Ṛshis here,
    packed with hundreds of carriages,
    of thousands of Brāhmaṇas from various places,
    who are all well versed in Vēdas.
    O Brahman! Where shall we stay?
    1.50.5
    ராமஸ்ய வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி: ।
    நிவேஸமகரோத்தேஸே விவிக்தே ஸலிலாயுதே ॥
    rāmasya vacanaṃ ṡrutvā viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ ।
    nivēṡamakarōddēṡē viviktē salilāyutē ॥
    The great Muni Viṡwāmitra,
    after hearing those words of Rāma,
    camped in a place that was not crowded
    and had access to fresh water.
    1.50.6-7a
    விஸ்வாமித்ரமநுப்ராப்தம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸ ந்ருபதிஸ்ததா ।
    ஸதாநந்தம் புரஸ்க்ருத்ய புரோஹிதமநிந்திதம் ।
    ப்ரத்யுஜ்ஜகாம ஸஹஸா விநயேந ஸமந்வித: ॥
    viṡvāmitramanuprāptaṃ ṡrutvā sa nṛpatistadā ।
    ṡatānandaṃ puraskṛtya purōhitamaninditam ।
    pratyujjagāma sahasā vinayēna samanvitaḥ ॥
    Having heard of the arrival of Viṡwāmitra,
    the king (Janaka) went immediately
    to receive him with all humility
    with his Purōhita, the unblemished Ṡatānanda, leading him.
    1.50.7b-8a
    ருத்விஜோऽபி மஹாத்மாநஸ்த்வர்க்யமாதாய ஸத்வரம் ।
    விஸ்வாமித்ராய தர்மேண ததுர்மந்த்ரபுரஸ்க்ருதம் ॥
    ṛtvijō'pi mahātmānastvarghyamādāya satvaram ।
    viṡvāmitrāya dharmēṇa dadurmantrapuraskṛtam ॥
    The Mahātma Ṛtvijas immediately fetched Arghya
    and offered it to Viṡwāmitra in a customary manner,
    after cleansing it with Mantras.
    Arghya is water offered for drinking, often cleansed with Mantras.
    Muni - one who performs or performed Tapa in seclusion in a Vana.


    Ṛshi - one who propounds the secrets of the universe or is a visionary.


    Ṛtvija - one who offers services to perform a ritual or parts of it, occasionally or for a life time.


    Purōhita - Who conducts or coordinates the performance of services, especially for a King and other city dwellers.
    1.50.8b-9a
    ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய து தாம் பூஜாம் ஜநகஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
    பப்ரச்ச குஸலம் ராஜ்ஞோ யஜ்ஞஸ்ய ச நிராமயம் ॥
    pratigṛhya tu tāṃ pūjāṃ janakasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    papraccha kuṡalaṃ rājñō yajñasya ca nirāmayam ॥
    After receiving the hospitalities of Mahātma Janaka
    Viṡwāmitra enquired about his well being
    and of the smooth progress of the Yajña.
    1.50.9b-10a
    ஸ தாம்ஸ்சாபி முநீந் ப்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸோபாத்யாயபுரோதஸ: ।
    யதாந்யாயம் தத: ஸர்வை: ஸமாகச்சத் ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டவத் ॥
    sa tāṃṡcāpi munīn pṛṣṭvā sōpādhyāyapurōdhasaḥ ।
    yathānyāyaṃ tataḥ sarvaiḥ samāgacchat prahṛṣṭavat ॥
    Viṡwāmitra was happy meeting
    all the Munis, Upādhyāyas and Purōhitas
    and greeted them all appropriately.
    1.50.10b-11a
    அத ராஜா முநிஸ்ரேஷ்டம் க்ருதாஞ்ஜலிரபாஷத ।
    ஆஸநே பகவந்நாஸ்தாம் ஸஹைபிர்முநிஸத்தமை: ॥
    atha rājā muniṡrēṣṭhaṃ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ।
    āsanē bhagavannāstāṃ sahaibhirmunisattamaiḥ ॥
    Then the king, with folded hands,
    said to Viṡwāmitra, best among Munis:
    "May all of you great Munis be seated!"
    1.50.11b-12a
    ஜநகஸ்ய வச: ஸ்ருத்வா நிஷஸாத மஹாமுநி: ।
    புரோதா ருத்விஜஸ்சைவ ராஜா ச ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபி: ॥
    janakasya vacaḥ ṡrutvā niṣasāda mahāmuniḥ ।
    purōdhā ṛtvijaṡcaiva rājā ca saha mantribhiḥ ॥
    The great Muni took his seat,
    in response to the words of Janaka.
    The king also took a seat along with
    Purōhitas, Ṛtvijas and ministers.
    1.50.12b-13a
    ஆஸநேஷு யதாந்யாயமுபவிஷ்டாந் ஸமந்தத: ।
    த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸ ந்ருபதிஸ்தத்ர விஸ்வாமித்ரமதாப்ரவீத் ॥
    āsanēṣu yathānyāyamupaviṣṭān samantataḥ ।
    dṛṣṭvā sa nṛpatistatra viṡvāmitramathābravīt ॥
    The king, after making eye contact
    with everyone thus seated in all directions,
    turned to Viṡwāmitra and said:
    1.50.13b-14a
    அத்ய யஜ்ஞஸம்ருத்திர்மே ஸபலா தைவதை: க்ருதா ।
    அத்ய யஜ்ஞபலம் ப்ராப்தம் பகவத்தர்ஸநாந்மயா ॥
    adya yajñasamṛddhirmē saphalā daivataiḥ kṛtā ।
    adya yajñaphalaṃ prāptaṃ bhagavaddarṡanānmayā ॥
    By the grace of Dēvas, I have been successful
    in performing the Yajña in all its aspects.
    With your presence, the very goal of the Yajña is fulfilled.
    1.50.14b-15a
    தந்யோऽஸ்ம்யநுக்ருஹீதோऽஸ்மி யஸ்ய மே முநிபுங்கவ ।
    யஜ்ஞோபஸதநம் ப்ரஹ்மந் ப்ராப்தோऽஸி முநிபி: ஸஹ ॥
    dhanyō'smyanugṛhītō'smi yasya mē munipuṅgava ।
    yajñōpasadanaṃ brahman prāptō'si munibhiḥ saha ॥
    O Brahman, O best among Munis!
    I feel blessed and fortunate
    because you have graced this venue of my Yajña
    along with all the other Munis.
    1.50.15b-16a
    த்வாதஸாஹம் து ப்ரஹ்மர்ஷே ஸேஷமாஹுர்மநீஷிண: ।
    ததோ பாகார்திநோ தேவாந் த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹஸி கௌஸிக ॥
    dvādaṡāhaṃ tu brahmarṣē ṡēṣamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ।
    tatō bhāgārthinō dēvān draṣṭumarhasi kauṡika ॥
    The great souls here say that
    the Yajña will last for another twelve days.
    After that you will be able to see the Dēvas
    that descend to take their respective portions of the offerings.
    1.50.16b-17a
    இத்யுக்த்வா முநிஸார்தூலம் ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டவதநஸ்ததா ।
    புநஸ்தம் பரிபப்ரச்ச ப்ராஞ்ஜலி: ப்ரணதோ ந்ருப: ॥
    ityuktvā muniṡārdūlaṃ prahṛṣṭavadanastadā ।
    punastaṃ paripapraccha prāñjaliḥ praṇatō nṛpaḥ ॥
    After saying thus, the king,
    with a pleasing face and folded hands,
    asked the tiger among Munis again:
    1.50.17b-19
    இமௌ குமாரௌ பத்ரம் தே தேவதுல்யபராக்ரமௌ ।
    கஜஸிம்ஹகதீ வீரௌ ஸார்தூலவ்ருஷபோபமௌ ।
    பத்மபத்ரவிஸாலாக்ஷௌ கட்கதூணீதநுர்த்தரௌ ।
    அஸ்விநாவிவ ரூபேண ஸமுபஸ்திதயௌவநௌ ।
    யத்ருச்சயைவ காம் ப்ராப்தௌ தேவலோகாதிவாமரௌ ।
    கதம் பத்ப்யாமிஹ ப்ராப்தௌ கிமர்தம் கஸ்ய வா முநே ॥
    imau kumārau bhadraṃ tē dēvatulyaparākramau ।
    gajasiṃhagatī vīrau ṡārdūlavṛṣabhōpamau ।
    padmapatraviṡālākṣau khaḍgatūṇīdhanurddharau ।
    aṡvināviva rūpēṇa samupasthitayauvanau ।
    yadṛcchayaiva gāṃ prāptau dēvalōkādivāmarau ।
    kathaṃ padbhyāmiha prāptau kimarthaṃ kasya vā munē ॥
    O Muni! May all bode well for you!
    Who are these duo of youngsters, Veeras,
    who are intrepid as Dēvas,
    treading like lions and elephants,
    postured like tigers and bulls,
    eyes wide and bright like lotus petals,
    handsome like Aṡwini Dēvas,
    bearing swords, quivers and bows,
    with youth fully upon them and
    looking like Dēvas that descended
    upon the earth at their own pleasure?
    For what purpose did they come walking on their feet?
    Whom do they belong to?
    First impressions of Janaka about his future sons-in-law!


    Also, note that king Sumati also felt the same way about Rāma and Lakshmaṇa earlier (Sarga 48, Ṡlōkas 2-6).






    1.50.20-22
    வராயுததரௌ வீரௌ கஸ்ய புத்ரௌ மஹாமுநே ।
    பூஷயந்தாவிமம் தேஸம் சந்த்ரஸூர்யாவிவாம்பரம் ।
    பரஸ்பரஸ்ய ஸத்ருஸௌ ப்ரமாணேங்கிதசேஷ்டிதை: ।
    காகபக்ஷதரௌ வீரௌ ஸ்ரோதுமிச்சாமி தத்த்வத: ॥
    varāyudhadharau vīrau kasya putrau mahāmunē ।
    bhūṣayantāvimaṃ dēṡaṃ candrasūryāvivāmbaram ।
    parasparasya sadṛṡau pramāṇēṅgitacēṣṭitaiḥ ।
    kākapakṣadharau vīrau ṡrōtumicchāmi tattvataḥ ॥
    They have lightened up this entire land
    like the Sun and Moon do to the sky.
    They are unbelievably identical
    in their looks, postures and gestures.
    O great Muni! Whose children are these
    Veeras, with the best of weapons on them,
    and hair handsomely flowing to their shoulders?
    1.50.22
    தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஜநகஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
    ந்யவேதயந்மஹாத்மாநௌ புத்ரௌ தஸரதஸ்ய தௌ ॥
    tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā janakasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    nyavēdayanmahātmānau putrau daṡarathasya tau ॥
    In response to those words of Mahātma Janaka
    Viṡwāmitra told that those duo were the sons of Daṡaratha.
    1.50.23-25
    ஸித்தாஸ்ரமநிவாஸம் ச ராக்ஷஸாநாம் வதம் ததா ।
    தச்சாகமநமவ்யக்ரம் விஸாலாயாஸ்ச தர்ஸநம் ।
    அஹல்யாதர்ஸநம் சைவ கௌதமேந ஸமாகமம் ।
    மஹாதநுஷி ஜிஜ்ஞாஸாம் கர்துமாகமநம் ததா ।
    ஏதத்ஸர்வம் மஹாதேஜா ஜநகாய மஹாத்மநே ।
    நிவேத்ய விரராமாத விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி: ॥
    siddhāṡramanivāsaṃ ca rākṣasānāṃ vadhaṃ tathā ।
    taccāgamanamavyagraṃ viṡālāyāṡca darṡanam ।
    ahalyādarṡanaṃ caiva gautamēna samāgamam ।
    mahādhanuṣi jijñāsāṃ kartumāgamanaṃ tathā ।
    ētatsarvaṃ mahātējā janakāya mahātmanē ।
    nivēdya virarāmātha viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ ॥
    The great Muni Viṡwāmitra told
    the supremely radiant Mahātma Janaka about
    his life in Siddhāṡrama, the annihilation of Rākshasas,
    their intrepid trek, their visit to the city of Viṡāla,
    the visiting of Ahalya and her reunion with Gautama
    and their interest in coming (to Mithilā) to see the great bow.
    After telling all those details, Viṡwāmitra rested.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சாஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pañcāṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the fiftieth Sarga
    in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.

    We completed reading 1517 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
