Read Ramayana Baala Kaanda - Sarga 41Baala Kaanda - Sarga 41
In this Sarga, Sagara sends his grandson Amṡumān in search of his sons and the horse. Amṡumān learns about the death of his uncles and gets advice from Garuda that only the waters of the divine Gaṅga can send them to Heaven.
He returns to his grandfather with the horse and tells him about the fate of his uncles. Sagara grieves the death of his sons, completes the Yajña but would not find a way to bring Gaṅga to the earth during his life time.
1.41.1
புத்ராம்ஸ்சிரகதாந் ஜ்ஞாத்வா ஸகரோ ரகுநந்தந ।
நப்தாரமப்ரவீத்ராஜா தீப்யமாநம் ஸ்வதேஜஸா ॥
putrāṃṡciragatān jñātvā sagarō raghunandana ।
naptāramabravīdrājā dīpyamānaṃ svatējasā ॥
O prince of Raghu Dynasty!
Realizing that his children were gone for too long,
Sagara told his grandson,
who was radiant with natural brilliance:
1.41.2
ஸூரஸ்ச க்ருதவித்யஸ்ச பூர்வைஸ்துல்யோऽஸி தேஜஸா ।
பிதணாம் கதிமந்விச்ச யேந சாஸ்வோऽபவாஹித: ॥
ṡūraṡca kṛtavidyaṡca pūrvaistulyō'si tējasā ।
pit ṇāṃ gatimanviccha yēna cāṡvō'pavāhitaḥ ॥
You are valorous, well-read and well-trained
to be comparable with any of your ancestors.
Please go and find the whereabouts of
your uncles and the abductor of the horse.
1.41.3
அந்தர்பௌமாநி ஸத்த்வாநி வீர்யவந்தி மஹாந்தி ச ।
தேஷாம் த்வம் ப்ரதிகாதார்தம் ஸாஸிம் க்ருஹ்ணீஷ்வ கார்முகம் ॥
antarbhaumāni sattvāni vīryavanti mahānti ca ।
tēṣāṃ tvaṃ pratighātārthaṃ sāsiṃ gṛhṇīṣva kārmukam ॥
The beings underneath the earth are strong and mammoth.
Please take with you the Astras and bow that are
good for putting them in check.
1.41.4
அபிவாத்யாபிவாத்யாம்ஸ்த்வம் ஹத்வா விக்நகராநபி ।
ஸித்தார்தஸ்ஸந்நிவர்தஸ்வ மம யஜ்ஞஸ்ய பாரக: ॥
abhivādyābhivādyāṃstvaṃ hatvā vighnakarānapi ।
siddhārthassannivartasva mama yajñasya pāragaḥ ॥
Pay respects on your way to those who deserve it.
Kill those that come in your way.
Come back with your mission accomplished,
to take this Yajña to its final completion.
What a crisp and well-articulated commandment!
1.41.5
ஏவமுக்தோம்ऽஸுமாந் ஸம்யக் ஸகரேண மஹாத்மநா ।
தநுராதாய கங்கம் ச ஜகாம லகுவிக்ரம: ॥
ēvamuktōṃ'ṡumān samyak sagarēṇa mahātmanā ।
dhanurādāya khaṅgaṃ ca jagāma laghuvikramaḥ ॥
Told thus by the Mahātma Sagara in no uncertain terms,
Amṡumān took the bow and sword and left immediately.
1.41.6
ஸ காதம் பித்ருபிர்மார்கமந்தர்பௌமம் மஹாத்மபி: ।
ப்ராபத்யத நரஸ்ரேஷ்டஸ்தேந ராஜ்ஞாऽபிசோதித: ॥
sa khātaṃ pitṛbhirmārgamantarbhaumaṃ mahātmabhiḥ ।
prāpadyata naraṡrēṣṭhastēna rājñā'bhicōditaḥ ॥
O best among men!
He, then, prodded by the command of the king,
followed along the path that was
dug in the ground by his great uncles.
1.41.7
தைத்யதாநவரக்ஷோபி: பிஸாசபதகோரகை: ।
பூஜ்யமாநம் மஹாதேஜா திஸாகஜமபஸ்யத ॥
daityadānavarakṣōbhiḥ piṡācapatagōragaiḥ ।
pūjyamānaṃ mahātējā diṡāgajamapaṡyata ॥
On his way, he saw the great, big and radiant elephant
that was praised and revered by
Daityas, Dānavas, Rākshasas, Pisācas, Birds and Serpents.
1.41.8
ஸ தம் ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் க்ருத்வா ப்ருஷ்ட்வா சைவ நிராமயம் ।
பிதந் ஸ பரிபப்ரச்ச வாஜிஹர்தாரமேவ ச ॥
sa taṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā pṛṣṭvā caiva nirāmayam ।
pit n sa paripapraccha vājihartāramēva ca ॥
He paid respects to it by circumambulating and
sought its blessings for his good health and well being
and then inquired about his uncles
and about the abductor of the horse.
1.41.9
திஸாகஜஸ்து தச்ச்ருத்வா ப்ரத்யாஹாம்ஸுமதோ வச: ।
ஆஸமஞ்ஜ க்ருதார்தஸ்த்வம் ஸஹாஸ்வ: ஸீக்ரமேஷ்யஸி ॥
diṡāgajastu tacchrutvā pratyāhāṃṡumatō vacaḥ ।
āsamañja kṛtārthastvaṃ sahāṡvaḥ ṡīghramēṣyasi ॥
That majestic elephant heard him and said:
“O son of Asamanja!
You shall certainly accomplish your mission!
You will get back with the horse very soon!”
1.41.10
தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸர்வாநேவ திஸாகஜாந் ।
யதாக்ரமம் யதாந்யாயம் ப்ரஷ்டும் ஸமுபசக்ரமே ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā sarvānēva diṡāgajān ।
yathākramaṃ yathānyāyaṃ praṣṭuṃ samupacakramē ॥
After listening to that great elephant,
he proceeded to ask all the other
great elephants in all the other directions
one by one, in an appropriate manner.
1.41.11
தைஸ்ச ஸர்வைர்திஸாபாலைர்வாக்யஜ்ஞைர்வாக்யகோவிதை: ।
பூஜித: ஸஹயஸ்சைவ கந்தாஸீத்யபிசோதித: ॥
taiṡca sarvairdiṡāpālairvākyajñairvākyakōvidaiḥ ।
pūjitaḥ sahayaṡcaiva gantāsītyabhicōditaḥ ॥
All the elephants in the other directions that were
good at making sensible conversations,
also received him with respect and consideration
and assured him that he would return along with the horse.
1.41.12
தேஷாம் தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஜகாம லகுவிக்ரம: ।
பஸ்மராஸீக்ருதா யத்ர பிதரஸ்தஸ்ய ஸாகரா: ॥
tēṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā jagāma laghuvikramaḥ ।
bhasmarāṡīkṛtā yatra pitarastasya sāgarāḥ ॥
Taking directions from them, he finally
reached the place where his uncles,
the sons of Sagara, had been burnt to ash.
1.41.13
ஸ து:கவஸமாபந்நஸ்த்வஸமஞ்ஜஸுதஸ்ததா ।
சுக்ரோஸ பரமார்தஸ்து வதாத்தேஷாம் ஸுது:கித: ॥
sa duḥkhavaṡamāpannastvasamañjasutastadā ।
cukrōṡa paramārtastu vadhāttēṣāṃ suduḥkhitaḥ ॥
Then the son of Asamanja cried pitifully
seeing all his uncles killed.
1.41.14
யஜ்ஞீயம் ச ஹயம் தத்ர சரந்தமவிதூரத: ।
ததர்ஸ புருஷவ்யாக்ரோ து:கஸோகஸமந்வித: ॥
yajñīyaṃ ca hayaṃ tatra carantamavidūrataḥ ।
dadarṡa puruṣavyāghrō duḥkhaṡōkasamanvitaḥ ॥
That tiger among men, crying inconsolably,
saw the horse of the Yajña nearby.
1.41.15
ஸ தேஷாம் ராஜபுத்ராணாம் கர்துகாமோ ஜலக்ரியாம் ।
ஸலிலார்தீ மஹாதேஜா ந சாபஸ்யஜ்ஜலாஸயம் ॥
sa tēṣāṃ rājaputrāṇāṃ kartukāmō jalakriyām ।
salilārthī mahātējā na cāpaṡyajjalāṡayam ॥
The supremely radiant Amṡumān wanted to offer
water oblations to the dead princes,
but could not find any water around there.
1.41.16
விஸார்ய நிபுணாம் த்ருஷ்டிம் ததோऽபஸ்யத் ககாதிபம் ।
பிதணாம் மாதுலம் ராம ஸுபர்ணமநிலோபமம் ॥
visārya nipuṇāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ tatō'paṡyat khagādhipam ।
pit ṇāṃ mātulaṃ rāma suparṇamanilōpamam ॥
O Rāma, he then stretched his acute vision
and saw the uncle of his uncles,
the lord of birds, with majestic wings
and speed comparable to the wind.
The bird referred to here is Garuda.
He is the uncle of his uncles, because their mother
Sumati is the sister of Garuda. (See 1.38.14)
1.41.17
ஸ சைவமப்ரவீத்வாக்யம் வைநதேயோ மஹாபல: ।
மா ஸுச: புருஷவ்யாக்ர வதோऽயம் லோகஸம்மத: ॥
sa caivamabravīdvākyaṃ vainatēyō mahābalaḥ ।
mā ṡucaḥ puruṣavyāghra vadhō'yaṃ lōkasammataḥ ॥
The mighty strong son of Vinata (Garuda) said to him:
O tiger among men! Do not grieve.
The whole world would appreciate their annihilation.
1.41.18
கபிலேநாப்ரமேயேந தக்தா ஹீமே மஹாபலா: ।
ஸலிலம் நார்ஹஸி ப்ராஜ்ஞ தாதுமேஷாம் ஹி லௌகிகம் ॥
kapilēnāpramēyēna dagdhā hīmē mahābalāḥ ।
salilaṃ nārhasi prājña dātumēṣāṃ hi laukikam ॥
These mighty strong were burnt down by the great Kapila.
The earthly waters are not to be given to them.
1.41.19
கங்கா ஹிமவதோ ஜ்யேஷ்டா துஹிதா புருஷர்ஷப ।
தஸ்யாம் குரு மஹாபாஹோ பிதணாம் து ஜலக்ரியாம் ॥
gaṅgā himavatō jyēṣṭhā duhitā puruṣarṣabha ।
tasyāṃ kuru mahābāhō pit ṇāṃ tu jalakriyām ॥
O bull among men!
Gaṅga is the eldest daughter of Himavān.
O mighty armed! Use her water to
offer water oblations to your uncles!
1.41.20
பஸ்மராஸீக்ருதாநேதாந் ப்லாவயேல்லோகபாவநீ ।
தயா க்லிந்நமிதம் பஸ்ம கங்கயா லோககாந்தயா ।
ஷஷ்டிம் புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி ஸ்வர்கலோகம் நயிஷ்யதி ॥
bhasmarāṡīkṛtānētān plāvayēllōkapāvanī ।
tayā klinnamidaṃ bhasma gaṅgayā lōkakāntayā ।
ṣaṣṭiṃ putrasahasrāṇi svargalōkaṃ nayiṣyati ॥
Gaṅga, the sanctifier of all the worlds, will sanctify them.
When Gaṅga, the beloved of all worlds, touches these ashes,
all the six thousand princes will reach heaven.
1.41.21
கச்ச சாஸ்வம் மஹாபாக தம் க்ருஹ்ய புருஷர்ஷப ।
யஜ்ஞம் பைதாமஹம் வீர ஸம்வர்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
gaccha cāṡvaṃ mahābhāga taṃ gṛhya puruṣarṣabha ।
yajñaṃ paitāmahaṃ vīra saṃvartayitumarhasi ॥
O bull among men! O blessed one!
May you return along with the horse
and help complete the Yajña of your grandfather.
1.41.22
ஸுபர்ணவசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸோம்ऽஸுமாநதி வீர்யவாந் ।
த்வரிதம் ஹயமாதாய புநராயாந்மஹாயஸா: ॥
suparṇavacanaṃ ṡrutvā sōṃ'ṡumānati vīryavān ।
tvaritaṃ hayamādāya punarāyānmahāyaṡāḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Suparṇa (Garuda)
the valorous and well regarded Amṡumān
took the horse immediately and returned.
1.41.23
ததோ ராஜாநமாஸாத்ய தீக்ஷிதம் ரகுநந்தந ।
ந்யவேதயத்யதாவ்ருத்தம் ஸுபர்ணவசநம் ததா ॥
tatō rājānamāsādya dīkṣitaṃ raghunandana ।
nyavēdayadyathāvṛttaṃ suparṇavacanaṃ tathā ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty,
then he went to the king, who was in Deeksha.
He recounted the entire sequence of happenings
including the guidance of Garuda.
1.41.24
தச்ச்ருத்வா கோரஸங்காஸம் வாக்யமம்ஸுமதோ ந்ருப: ।
யஜ்ஞம் நிர்வர்தயாமாஸ யதாகல்பம் யதாவிதி ॥
tacchrutvā ghōrasaṅkāṡaṃ vākyamaṃṡumatō nṛpaḥ ।
yajñaṃ nirvartayāmāsa yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi ॥
The king heard the dreadful news from Amṡumān.
He then completed the Yajña as per the protocol and guidelines.
1.41.25
ஸ்வபுரம் சாகமச்ச்ரீமாநிஷ்டயஜ்ஞோ மஹீபதி: ।
கங்காயாஸ்சாகமே ராஜா நிஸ்சயம் நாத்யகச்சத ॥
svapuraṃ cāgamacchrīmāniṣṭayajñō mahīpatiḥ ।
gaṅgāyāṡcāgamē rājā niṡcayaṃ nādhyagacchata ॥
The king returned to his city after completing the Yajña.
But he could not find a way of getting Gaṅga.
1.41.26
அக்ருத்வா நிஸ்சயம் ராஜா காலேந மஹதா மஹாந் ।
த்ரிம்ஸத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ராஜ்யம் க்ருத்வா திவம் கத: ॥
akṛtvā niṡcayaṃ rājā kālēna mahatā mahān ।
triṃṡadvarṣasahasrāṇi rājyaṃ kṛtvā divaṃ gataḥ ॥
That great king, even after a long time,
could not find a way to bring Gaṅga.
He ruled the kingdom for thirty thousand years
and passed away, to heaven.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே ஏகசத்வாரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē ēkacatvāriṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the forty first Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 1258 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
