Read Ramayana Baala Kaanda - Sarga 35
The stories by Viṡwāmitra continue in this Sarga. Viṡwāmitra tells about the two daughters of Himavānta (Himalaya Mountains), Gaṅga and Uma, and how Gaṅga happened to ascend to the heavens.
1.35.1
உபாஸ்ய ராத்ரிஸேஷம் து ஸோணாகூலே மஹர்ஷிபி: ।
நிஸாயாம் ஸுப்ரபாதாயாம் விஸ்வாமித்ரோऽப்யபாஷத ॥
upāsya rātriṡēṣaṃ tu ṡōṇākūlē maharṣibhiḥ ।
niṡāyāṃ suprabhātāyāṃ viṡvāmitrō'bhyabhāṣata ॥
Viṡwāmitra, along with all the other Ṛshis
spent the night on the banks of river Ṡōṇā.
As the night was broken by dawn,
he woke up and said (to Rāma):
Older people sleep less and get up sooner than younger people. Then they wake up the younger ones. That builds a bond between the young and old.
Who wouldn't reminisce nostalgically about the days when grandparents woke them up from bed in their childhood?
In the atomic families of today, it is the turn of the parents to wake up children. But it would not be same experience. It does not give the same emotional caressing that children get when woken up by grandparents.
1.35.2
ஸுப்ரபாதா நிஸா ராம பூர்வா ஸந்த்யா ப்ரவர்ததே ।
உத்திஷ்டோத்திஷ்ட பத்ரம் தே கமநாயாபிரோசய ॥
suprabhātā niṡā rāma pūrvā sandhyā pravartatē ।
uttiṣṭhōttiṣṭha bhadraṃ tē gamanāyābhirōcaya ॥
O Rāma! The night in the eastern skies has receded
and dawn is upon us, boding a fine morning.
Please get up and get ready for the onward journey.
This Ṡlōka is a variation of Ṡlōka 1.23.2, which is also adopted as the first Ṡlōka of Sri Venkatēswara Suprabhātam.
1.35.3
தச்ச்ருத்வா வசநம் தஸ்ய க்ருத்வா பௌர்வாஹ்ணிகீம் க்ரியாம் ।
கமநம் ரோசயாமாஸ வாக்யம் சேதமுவாச ஹ ॥
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīṃ kriyām ।
gamanaṃ rōcayāmāsa vākyaṃ cēdamuvāca ha ॥
Rāma woke up with those words of Viṡwāmitra.
He completed all the morning ablutions
and asked the following while getting ready for the journey:
1.35.4
அயம் ஸோண: ஸுபஜலோ காத: புலிநமண்டித: ।
கதரேண பதா ப்ரஹ்மந் ஸந்தரிஷ்யாமஹே வயம் ॥
ayaṃ ṡōṇaḥ ṡubhajalō gādhaḥ pulinamaṇḍitaḥ ।
katarēṇa pathā brahman santariṣyāmahē vayam ॥
O Brahman! The waters of this river Ṡōṇā
are enchanting and shallow with splendid beaches.
Where shall we cross this river?
1.35.5
ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ராமேண விஸ்வாமித்ரோऽப்ரவீதிதம் ।
ஏஷ பந்தா மயோத்திஷ்டோ யேந யாந்தி மஹர்ஷய: ॥
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa viṡvāmitrō'bravīdidam ।
ēṣa panthā mayōddiṣṭō yēna yānti maharṣayaḥ ॥
To that question of Rāma, Viṡwāmitra said:
“The Maharshis shall take the path that I had planned.”
1.35.6
ஏவமுக்தா மஹர்ஷயோ விஸ்வாமித்ரேண தீமதா ।
பஸ்யந்தஸ்தே ப்ரயாதா வை வநாநி விவிதாநி ச ॥
ēvamuktā maharṣayō viṡvāmitrēṇa dhīmatā ।
paṡyantastē prayātā vai vanāni vividhāni ca ॥
Taking cue from those words of the learned Viṡwāmitra,
they proceeded on their journey enjoying the
many Vanas on the path.
1.35.7
தே கத்வா தூரமத்வாநம் கதேऽர்த்ததிவஸே ததா ।
ஜாஹ்நவீம் ஸரிதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டாம் தத்ருஸுர்முநிஸேவிதாம் ॥
tē gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ gatē'rddhadivasē tadā ।
jāhnavīṃ saritāṃ ṡrēṣṭhāṃ dadṛṡurmunisēvitām ॥
After travelling quite a while, almost till noon,
they reached the banks of river Gaṅga,
the prominent among all the rivers,
that is worshipped by Munis.
1.35.8
தாம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா புண்யஸலிலாம் ஹம்ஸஸாரஸஸேவிதாம் ।
பபூவுர்முநய: ஸர்வே முதிதா: ஸஹராகவா: ॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā puṇyasalilāṃ haṃsasārasasēvitām ।
babhūvurmunayaḥ sarvē muditāḥ saharāghavāḥ ॥
All of them, including the prince of Raghu dynasty
felt excited to see the enchanting waters of Gaṅga
full of Hamsa and Sārasa birds.
1.35.9-11a
தஸ்யாஸ்தீரே ததஸ்சக்ருஸ்த ஆவாஸபரிக்ரஹம் ॥
தத: ஸ்நாத்வா யதாந்யாயம் ஸந்தர்ப்ய பித்ருதேவதா: ।
ஹுத்வா சைவாக்நிஹோத்ராணி ப்ராஸ்ய சாம்ருதவத்தவி: ॥
விவிஸுர்ஜாஹ்நவீதீரே ஸுசௌ முதிதமாநஸா: ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரம் மஹாத்மாநம் பரிவார்ய ஸமந்தத: ॥
tasyāstīrē tataṡcakrusta āvāsaparigraham ॥
tataḥ snātvā yathānyāyaṃ santarpya pitṛdēvatāḥ ।
hutvā caivāgnihōtrāṇi prāṡya cāmṛtavaddhaviḥ ॥
viviṡurjāhnavītīrē ṡucau muditamānasāḥ ।
viṡvāmitraṃ mahātmānaṃ parivārya samantataḥ ॥
All of them took a break on the banks of that river.
They bathed and completed their daily ablutions
including offering to ancestors and the Dēvas
They performed fire rituals and
ate the Havis that was like Amṛit.
They then sat around the Mahātma Viṡwāmitra
in every direction, on that sacred and
clean banks of river Gaṅga
with pleasant minds and peaceful hearts.
1.35.11b-12
அத தத்ர ததா ராமோ விஸ்வாமித்ரமதாப்ரவீத் ।
பகவந் ஸ்ரோதுமிச்சாமி கங்காம் த்ரிபதகாம் நதீம் ॥
த்ரைலோக்யம் கதமாக்ரம்ய கதா நதநதீபதிம் ॥
atha tatra tadā rāmō viṡvāmitramathābravīt ।
bhagavan ṡrōtumicchāmi gaṅgāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm ॥
trailōkyaṃ kathamākramya gatā nadanadīpatim ॥
Then Rāma asked Viṡwāmitra:
Bhagawan! I am curious to know about river Gaṅga
that flows in three paths in the three worlds
and how it finally reaches its destination, the ocean,
where all the east and west flowing rivers reach!
1.35.13
சோதிதோ ராமவாக்யேந விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி: ।
வ்ருத்திம் ஜந்ம ச கங்காயா வக்துமேவோபசக்ரமே ॥
cōditō rāmavākyēna viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ ।
vṛddhiṃ janma ca gaṅgāyā vaktumēvōpacakramē ॥
In response to that question of Rāma,
the great Muni Viṡwāmitra began the story of
the origin and course of the Gaṅga.
1.35.14
ஸைலேந்த்ரோ ஹிமவாந்நாம தாதூநாமாகரோ மஹாந் ।
தஸ்ய கந்யாத்வயம் ராம ரூபேணாப்ரதிமம் புவி ॥
ṡailēndrō himavānnāma dhātūnāmākarō mahān ।
tasya kanyādvayaṃ rāma rūpēṇāpratimaṃ bhuvi ॥
The great Himavān, the king among mountains,
the abode of all minerals and materials,
had two daughters who were unequaled in the world.
1.35.15
யா மேருதுஹிதா ராம தயோர்மாதா ஸுமத்யமா ।
நாம்நா மநோரமா நாம பத்நீ ஹிமவத: ப்ரியா ॥
yā mēruduhitā rāma tayōrmātā sumadhyamā ।
nāmnā manōramā nāma patnī himavataḥ priyā ॥
Their mother, by name Manōrama,
the daughter of mount Mēru,
was his darling and beautiful wife.
1.35.16
தஸ்யாம் கங்கேயமபவஜ்ஜ்யேஷ்டா ஹிமவத: ஸுதா ।
உமா நாம த்விதீயாபூந்நாம்நா தஸ்யைவ ராகவ ॥
tasyāṃ gaṅgēyamabhavajjyēṣṭhā himavataḥ sutā ।
umā nāma dvitīyābhūnnāmnā tasyaiva rāghava ॥
To that Himavān, through that Manōrama,
were born the older daughter known as Gaṅga
and the younger daughter known as Uma.
1.35.17
அத ஜ்யேஷ்டாம் ஸுரா: ஸர்வே தேவதார்தசிகீர்ஷயா ।
ஸைலேந்த்ரம் வரயாமாஸுர்கங்காம் த்ரிபதகாம் நதீம் ॥
atha jyēṣṭhāṃ surāḥ sarvē dēvatārthacikīrṣayā ।
ṡailēndraṃ varayāmāsurgaṅgāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm ॥
All the Dēvas, implored the king among mountains
to give them the older daughter, the Gaṅga,
for fulfilling a divine purpose.
1.35.18
ததௌ தர்மேண ஹிமவாம்ஸ்தநயாம் லோகபாவநீம் ।
ஸ்வச்சந்தபதகாம் கங்காம் த்ரைலோக்யஹிதகாம்யயா ॥
dadau dharmēṇa himavāṃstanayāṃ lōkapāvanīm ।
svacchandapathagāṃ gaṅgāṃ trailōkyahitakāmyayā ॥
Considering it to be appropriate and responsible,
Himavān gave his daughter,
one who could make all the worlds auspicious,
who had the free will to choose her own path,
for the benefit of all the three worlds.
1.35.19
ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய த்ரிலோகார்தம் த்ரிலோகஹிதகாரிண: ।
கங்காமாதாய தேऽகச்சந் க்ருதார்தேநாந்தராத்மநா ॥
pratigṛhya trilōkārthaṃ trilōkahitakāriṇaḥ ।
gaṅgāmādāya tē'gacchan kṛtārthēnāntarātmanā ॥
The Dēvas, interested in doing good for all the three worlds,
then took Gaṅga with them and left,
having their purpose fulfilled.
1.35.20
யா சாந்யா ஸைலதுஹிதா கந்யாऽऽஸீத்ரகுநந்தந ।
உக்ரம் ஸா வ்ரதமாஸ்தாய தபஸ்தேபே தபோதநா ॥
yā cānyā ṡailaduhitā kanyā''sīdraghunandana ।
ugraṃ sā vratamāsthāya tapastēpē tapōdhanā ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty,
The other daughter of the king among mountains,
had taken upon a serious Tapa with strict regimen.
1.35.21
உக்ரேண தபஸா யுக்தாம் ததௌ ஸைலவர: ஸுதாம் ।
ருத்ராயாப்ரதிரூபாய உமாம் லோகநமஸ்க்ருதாம் ॥
ugrēṇa tapasā yuktāṃ dadau ṡailavaraḥ sutām ।
rudrāyāpratirūpāya umāṃ lōkanamaskṛtām ॥
Himavān gave that unequaled daughter of great Tapa
who was revered by all the worlds, to Rudra in marriage.
1.35.22
ஏதே தே ஸைலராஜஸ்ய ஸுதே லோகநமஸ்க்ருதே ।
கங்கா ச ஸரிதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டா உமா தேவீ ச ராகவ ॥
ētē tē ṡailarājasya sutē lōkanamaskṛtē ।
gaṅgā ca saritāṃ ṡrēṣṭhā umā dēvī ca rāghava ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Gaṅga, the best among rivers and
Uma, the one greatly revered by all peoples
were the daughters of that king among mountains.
1.35.23
ஏதத்தே ஸர்வமாக்யாதம் யதா த்ரிபதகா நதீ ।
கம் கதா ப்ரதமம் தாத கதிம் கதிமதாம் வர ॥
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṃ yathā tripathagā nadī ।
khaṃ gatā prathamaṃ tāta gatiṃ gatimatāṃ vara ॥
My dear Rāma of illustrious character!
This is the detail of the story
of how Gaṅga that flows in three paths,
happened to go to the heavens first.
1.35.24
ஸைஷா ஸுரநதீ ரம்யா ஸைலேந்த்ரஸ்ய ஸுதா ததா ।
ஸுரலோகம் ஸமாரூடா விபாபா ஜலவாஹிநீ ॥
saiṣā suranadī ramyā ṡailēndrasya sutā tadā ।
suralōkaṃ samārūḍhā vipāpā jalavāhinī ॥
This is that enchanting daughter of the king among mountains
who flows in the form of waters, capable of cleaning all Pāpas,
that ascended to the Dēva Lōka and became a divine river.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சத்ரிம்ஸ ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pañcatriṃṡa sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

1.35.19
ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய த்ரிலோகார்தம் த்ரிலோகஹிதகாரிண: ।
கங்காமாதாய தேऽகச்சந் க்ருதார்தேநாந்தராத்மநா ॥
pratigṛhya trilōkārthaṃ trilōkahitakāriṇaḥ ।
gaṅgāmādāya tē'gacchan kṛtārthēnāntarātmanā ॥
The Dēvas, interested in doing good for all the three worlds,
then took Gaṅga with them and left,
having their purpose fulfilled.
1.35.20
யா சாந்யா ஸைலதுஹிதா கந்யாऽऽஸீத்ரகுநந்தந ।
உக்ரம் ஸா வ்ரதமாஸ்தாய தபஸ்தேபே தபோதநா ॥
yā cānyā ṡailaduhitā kanyā''sīdraghunandana ।
ugraṃ sā vratamāsthāya tapastēpē tapōdhanā ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty,
The other daughter of the king among mountains,
had taken upon a serious Tapa with strict regimen.
1.35.21
உக்ரேண தபஸா யுக்தாம் ததௌ ஸைலவர: ஸுதாம் ।
ருத்ராயாப்ரதிரூபாய உமாம் லோகநமஸ்க்ருதாம் ॥
ugrēṇa tapasā yuktāṃ dadau ṡailavaraḥ sutām ।
rudrāyāpratirūpāya umāṃ lōkanamaskṛtām ॥
Himavān gave that unequaled daughter of great Tapa
who was revered by all the worlds, to Rudra in marriage.
1.35.22
ஏதே தே ஸைலராஜஸ்ய ஸுதே லோகநமஸ்க்ருதே ।
கங்கா ச ஸரிதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டா உமா தேவீ ச ராகவ ॥
ētē tē ṡailarājasya sutē lōkanamaskṛtē ।
gaṅgā ca saritāṃ ṡrēṣṭhā umā dēvī ca rāghava ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Gaṅga, the best among rivers and
Uma, the one greatly revered by all peoples
were the daughters of that king among mountains.
1.35.23
ஏதத்தே ஸர்வமாக்யாதம் யதா த்ரிபதகா நதீ ।
கம் கதா ப்ரதமம் தாத கதிம் கதிமதாம் வர ॥
ētattē sarvamākhyātaṃ yathā tripathagā nadī ।
khaṃ gatā prathamaṃ tāta gatiṃ gatimatāṃ vara ॥
My dear Rāma of illustrious character!
This is the detail of the story
of how Gaṅga that flows in three paths,
happened to go to the heavens first.
1.35.24
ஸைஷா ஸுரநதீ ரம்யா ஸைலேந்த்ரஸ்ய ஸுதா ததா ।
ஸுரலோகம் ஸமாரூடா விபாபா ஜலவாஹிநீ ॥
saiṣā suranadī ramyā ṡailēndrasya sutā tadā ।
suralōkaṃ samārūḍhā vipāpā jalavāhinī ॥
This is that enchanting daughter of the king among mountains
who flows in the form of waters, capable of cleaning all Pāpas,
that ascended to the Dēva Lōka and became a divine river.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சத்ரிம்ஸ ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pañcatriṃṡa sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
