Read Ramayana Baala Kaanda - Sarga 34
The stories that Viṡwāmitra told in the previous Sargas were actually about his own lineage, as we will learn in this Sarga.
1.34.1
க்ருதோத்வாஹே கதே தஸ்மிந் ப்ரஹ்மதத்தே ச ராகவ ।
அபுத்ர: புத்ரலாபாய பௌத்ரீமிஷ்டிமகல்பயத் ॥
kṛtōdvāhē gatē tasmin brahmadattē ca rāghava ।
aputraḥ putralābhāya pautrīmiṣṭimakalpayat ॥
O Rāma, after Brahmadatta left,
(married to all his one hundred daughters),
Kuṡanābha performed a Yajña
that would give him sons, since he did not have any.
The Yajña done by Kuṡanābha is the same as that
done by Daṡaratha to get offspring,
referred to as Putrakāmeshṭi.
1.34.2
இஷ்ட்யாம் ச வர்தமாநாயாம் குஸநாபம் மஹீபதிம் ।
உவாச பரமோதார: குஸோ ப்ரஹ்மஸுதஸ்ததா ॥
iṣṭyāṃ ca vartamānāyāṃ kuṡanābhaṃ mahīpatim ।
uvāca paramōdāraḥ kuṡō brahmasutastadā ॥
As the Yajña was being performed,
the kind and considerate Kuṡa,
the son of Brahma and the father of Kuṡanābha,
said to Kuṡanābha :
1.34.3
புத்ர தே ஸத்ருஸ: புத்ரோ பவிஷ்யதி ஸுதார்மிக: ।
காதிம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி தேந த்வம் கீர்திம் லோகே ச ஸாஸ்வதீம் ॥
putra tē sadṛṡaḥ putrō bhaviṣyati sudhārmikaḥ ।
gādhiṃ prāpsyasi tēna tvaṃ kīrtiṃ lōkē ca ṡāṡvatīm ॥
Dear son! You will have a son by name Gādhi.
He will be a great Dhārmika like you.
He will make your name and fame last forever in this world.
1.34.4
ஏவமுக்த்வா குஸோ ராம குஸநாபம் மஹீபதிம் ।
ஜகாமாகாஸமாவிஸ்ய ப்ரஹ்மலோகம் ஸநாதநம் ॥
ēvamuktvā kuṡō rāma kuṡanābhaṃ mahīpatim ।
jagāmākāṡamāviṡya brahmalōkaṃ sanātanam ॥
After saying these words to Kuṡanābha,
Kuṡa disappeared into the skies and
on to the timeless Brahma Lōka.
1.34.5
கஸ்யசித்த்வத காலஸ்ய குஸநாபஸ்ய தீமத: ।
யஜ்ஞே பரமதர்மிஷ்டோ காதிரித்யேவ நாமத: ॥
kasyacittvatha kālasya kuṡanābhasya dhīmataḥ ।
yajñē paramadharmiṣṭhō gādhirityēva nāmataḥ ॥
After some time, the eminent Kuṡanābha
had a son by name Gādhi, who was a great Dhārmika.
1.34.6
ஸ பிதா மம காகுத்ஸ்த காதி: பரமதார்மிக: ।
குஸவம்ஸப்ரஸூதோऽஸ்மி கௌஸிகோ ரகுநந்தந ॥
sa pitā mama kākutstha gādhiḥ paramadhārmikaḥ ।
kuṡavaṃṡaprasūtō'smi kauṡikō raghunandana ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
That great Dhārmika, Gādhi was my father.
Since I come from that lineage of Kuṡa,
I am known as Kouṡika.
1.34.7
பூர்வஜா பகிநீ சாபி மம ராகவ ஸுவ்ரதா ।
நாம்நா ஸத்யவதீ நாம ருசீகே ப்ரதிபாதிதா ॥
pūrvajā bhaginī cāpi mama rāghava suvratā ।
nāmnā satyavatī nāma ṛcīkē pratipāditā ॥
O Rāma, I also have an elder sister by name Satyavati,
a highly principled woman, who is married to Ṛiceeka.
1.34.8
ஸஸரீரா கதா ஸ்வர்கம் பர்தாரமநுவர்திநீ ।
கௌஸிகீ பரமோதாரா ப்ரவ்ருத்தா ச மஹாநதீ ॥
saṡarīrā gatā svargaṃ bhartāramanuvartinī ।
kauṡikī paramōdārā pravṛttā ca mahānadī ॥
Along with her husband she went to the heavens,
in her mortal body and became the river called Kouṡiki.
1.34.9
திவ்யா புண்யோதகா ரம்யா ஹிமவந்தமுபாஸ்ரிதா ।
லோகஸ்ய ஹிதகாமார்தம் ப்ரவ்ருத்தா பகிநீ மம ॥
divyā puṇyōdakā ramyā himavantamupāṡritā ।
lōkasya hitakāmārthaṃ pravṛttā bhaginī mama ॥
My sister, with her divine and auspicious waters,
flows gorgeously from the Himalayas
benefitting all the people on her path.
The time before Rāma was that magical time when gods, human beings and nature could interchange to each other easily.
1.34.10
ததோऽஹம் ஹிமவத்பார்ஸ்வே வஸாமி நிரத: ஸுகம் ।
பகிந்யாம் ஸ்நேஹஸம்யுக்த: கௌஸிக்யாம் ரகுநந்தந ॥
tatō'haṃ himavatpārṡvē vasāmi nirataḥ sukham ।
bhaginyāṃ snēhasaṃyuktaḥ kauṡikyāṃ raghunandana ॥
Since I love my sister, I enjoy spending
as much time as possible near the Himalayas.
1.34.11
ஸா து ஸத்யவதீ புண்யா ஸத்யே தர்மே ப்ரதிஷ்டிதா ।
பதிவ்ரதா மஹாபாகா கௌஸிகீ ஸரிதாம் வரா ॥
sā tu satyavatī puṇyā satyē dharmē pratiṣṭhitā ।
pativratā mahābhāgā kauṡikī saritāṃ varā ॥
That blessed, chaste and clean Satyavati,
who is firmly established in Truth and Righteousness,
became one of the best among rivers.
1.34.12
அஹம் ஹி நியமாத்ராம ஹித்வா தாம் ஸமுபாகத: ।
ஸித்தாஸ்ரமமநுப்ராப்ய ஸித்தோऽஸ்மி தவ தேஜஸா ॥
ahaṃ hi niyamādrāma hitvā tāṃ samupāgataḥ ।
siddhāṡramamanuprāpya siddhō'smi tava tējasā ॥
O Rāma, for the sake of following the
strict regimen required for Tapa,
I had to leave her and stay at Siddhāṡrama,
where I gained Siddhi, due to your brilliance.
1.34.13
ஏஷா ராம மமோத்பத்தி: ஸ்வஸ்ய வம்ஸஸ்ய கீர்திதா ।
தேஸஸ்ய ச மஹாபாஹோ யந்மாம் த்வம் பரிப்ருச்சஸி ॥
ēṣā rāma mamōtpattiḥ svasya vaṃṡasya kīrtitā ।
dēṡasya ca mahābāhō yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥
O Rāma! That is the story of my ancestry and lineage
and the story of this land, that you asked me about.
1.34.14
கதோऽர்த்தராத்ர: காகுத்ஸ்த கதா: கதயதோ மம ।
நித்ராமப்யேஹி பத்ரம் தே மா பூத்விக்நோऽத்வநீஹ ந: ॥
gatō'rddharātraḥ kākutstha kathāḥ kathayatō mama ।
nidrāmabhyēhi bhadraṃ tē mā bhūdvighnō'dhvanīha naḥ ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
I have been telling these stories for too long.
Now it is past mid-night. Please go to bed.
May all bode well for you.
Hope we do not have any more difficulties in our journey!
These Ṡlōkas give us a taste of the poetry of Vālmeeki. Expect to get drowned in it when we get to Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa.
1.34.15
நிஷ்பந்தாஸ்தரவ: ஸர்வே நிலீநா ம்ருகபக்ஷிண: ।
நைஸேந தமஸா வ்யாப்தா திஸஸ்ச ரகுநந்தந ॥
niṣpandāstaravaḥ sarvē nilīnā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ।
naiṡēna tamasā vyāptā diṡaṡca raghunandana ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
The trees are still and silent. Animals and birds are quiet.
The darkness of night has spread in all directions.
1.34.16
ஸநைர்வியுஜ்யதே ஸந்த்யா நபோ நேத்ரைரிவாவ்ருதம் ।
நக்ஷத்ரதாராகஹநம் ஜ்யோதிர்பிரவபாஸதே ॥
ṡanairviyujyatē sandhyā nabhō nētrairivāvṛtam ।
nakṣatratārāgahanaṃ jyōtirbhiravabhāsatē ॥
The sun has set gently and quietly long ago.
Like thousands of bright eyes watching over us,
bright and twinkling stars have filled the sky.
1.34.17
உத்திஷ்டதி ச ஸீதாம்ஸு: ஸஸீ லோகதமோநுத: ।
ஹ்லாதயந் ப்ராணிநாம் லோகே மநாம்ஸி ப்ரபயா விபோ ॥
uttiṣṭhati ca ṡītāṃṡuḥ ṡaṡī lōkatamōnudaḥ ।
hlādayan prāṇināṃ lōkē manāṃsi prabhayā vibhō ॥
O dear lord! The moon is rising spreading his cool light everywhere.
The soft and gentle touch of the that light is
soothes the hearts of all beings.
1.34.18
நைஸாநி ஸர்வபூதாநி ப்ரசரந்தி ததஸ்தத: ।
யக்ஷராக்ஷஸஸங்காஸ்ச ரௌத்ராஸ்ச பிஸிதாஸநா: ॥
naiṡāni sarvabhūtāni pracaranti tatastataḥ ।
yakṣarākṣasasaṅghāṡca raudrāṡca piṡitāṡanāḥ ॥
All the nocturnals have come out, moving here and there.
The fearsome, nocturnal, man-eating
Yakshas and Rākshasas are also out on prowl.
1.34.19
ஏவமுக்த்வா மஹாதேஜா விரராம மஹாமுநி: ।
ஸாது ஸாத்விதி தம் ஸர்வே ருஷயோ ஹ்யப்யபூஜயந் ॥
ēvamuktvā mahātējā virarāma mahāmuniḥ ।
sādhu sādhviti taṃ sarvē ṛṣayō hyabhyapūjayan ॥
The supremely radiant Muni, saying thus,
rested for the night.
All the Munis paid respects to him,
with deep appreciation of all that he said.
1.34.20
குஸிகாநாமயம் வம்ஸோ மஹாந் தர்மபர: ஸதா ।
ப்ரஹ்மோபமா மஹாத்மாந: குஸவம்ஸ்யா நரோத்தமா: ॥
kuṡikānāmayaṃ vaṃṡō mahān dharmaparaḥ sadā ।
brahmōpamā mahātmānaḥ kuṡavaṃṡyā narōttamāḥ ॥
They said:
"The highly respected lineage of Kuṡa
held Dharma in high esteem.
Every one in that lineage was a noble Mahātma
comparable to Brahma Dēva himself.
1.34.21
விஸேஷேண பவாநேவ விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாயஸா: ।
கௌஸிகீ ச ஸரிச்ச்ரேஷ்டா குலோத்யோதகரீ தவ ॥
viṡēṣēṇa bhavānēva viṡvāmitrō mahāyaṡāḥ ।
kauṡikī ca saricchrēṣṭhā kulōdyōtakarī tava ॥
O reputed one! You stand foremost among all of them.
Kouṡiki, the best among rivers,
makes your lineage glow.
1.34.22
இதி தைர்முநிஸார்தூலை: ப்ரஸஸ்த: குஸிகாத்மஜ: ।
நித்ராமுபாகமச்ச்ரீமாநஸ்தங்கத இவாம்ஸுமாந் ॥
iti tairmuniṡārdūlaiḥ praṡastaḥ kuṡikātmajaḥ ।
nidrāmupāgamacchrīmānastaṅgata ivāṃṡumān ॥
The radiant descendant of Kuṡa (Viṡwāmitra),
thus praised by the tigers among Munis
rested for the night, like the
radiant sun that rests in the evening.
1.34.23
ராமோऽபி ஸஹஸௌமித்ரி: கிஞ்சிதாகதவிஸ்மய: ।
ப்ரஸஸ்ய முநிஸார்தூலம் நித்ராம் ஸமுபஸேவதே ॥
rāmō'pi sahasaumitriḥ kiñcidāgatavismayaḥ ।
praṡasya muniṡārdūlaṃ nidrāṃ samupasēvatē ॥
Rāma, along with Lakshmaṇa,
also was fascinated (with the story of Viṡwāmitra)
and praised that tiger among Munis, and went to sleep.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே சதுஸ்த்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē catustriṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fourth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 1070 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.

விஸேஷேண பவாநேவ விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாயஸா: ।
கௌஸிகீ ச ஸரிச்ச்ரேஷ்டா குலோத்யோதகரீ தவ ॥
viṡēṣēṇa bhavānēva viṡvāmitrō mahāyaṡāḥ ।
kauṡikī ca saricchrēṣṭhā kulōdyōtakarī tava ॥
O reputed one! You stand foremost among all of them.
Kouṡiki, the best among rivers,
makes your lineage glow.
1.34.22
இதி தைர்முநிஸார்தூலை: ப்ரஸஸ்த: குஸிகாத்மஜ: ।
நித்ராமுபாகமச்ச்ரீமாநஸ்தங்கத இவாம்ஸுமாந் ॥
iti tairmuniṡārdūlaiḥ praṡastaḥ kuṡikātmajaḥ ।
nidrāmupāgamacchrīmānastaṅgata ivāṃṡumān ॥
The radiant descendant of Kuṡa (Viṡwāmitra),
thus praised by the tigers among Munis
rested for the night, like the
radiant sun that rests in the evening.
1.34.23
ராமோऽபி ஸஹஸௌமித்ரி: கிஞ்சிதாகதவிஸ்மய: ।
ப்ரஸஸ்ய முநிஸார்தூலம் நித்ராம் ஸமுபஸேவதே ॥
rāmō'pi sahasaumitriḥ kiñcidāgatavismayaḥ ।
praṡasya muniṡārdūlaṃ nidrāṃ samupasēvatē ॥
Rāma, along with Lakshmaṇa,
also was fascinated (with the story of Viṡwāmitra)
and praised that tiger among Munis, and went to sleep.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே சதுஸ்த்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē catustriṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fourth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
