Read Ramayana Baala Kaanda - Sarga 33
The previous Sarga left us in suspense and in a gloomy mood (like before the intermission in a movie). In the previous Sarga, the beautiful and playful daughters of Kuṡanābha, struck by the god of Wind became incapacitated hunchbacks.
In this Sarga, all of them regain their original beauty and glory by the touch of Brahmadatta, after getting married to him.
1.33.1
தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா குஸநாபஸ்ய தீமத: ।
ஸிரோபிஸ்சரணௌ ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட்வா கந்யாஸதமபாஷத ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā kuṡanābhasya dhīmataḥ ।
ṡirōbhiṡcaraṇau spṛṣṭvā kanyāṡatamabhāṣata ॥
Those hundred girls then bowed their heads at the feet of
that considerate and conscientious Kuṡanābha
and responded to his question:
1.33.2
வாயு: ஸர்வாத்மகோ ராஜந் ப்ரதர்ஷயிதுமிச்சதி ।
அஸுபம் மார்கமாஸ்தாய ந தர்மம் ப்ரத்யவேக்ஷதே ॥
vāyuḥ sarvātmakō rājan pradharṣayitumicchati ।
aṡubhaṃ mārgamāsthāya na dharmaṃ pratyavēkṣatē ॥
O King! The god of Wind, who pervades everything,
turned a blind eye to Dharma,
and trekked an inauspicious path with defiance.
1.33.3
பித்ருமத்ய: ஸ்ம பத்ரம் தே ஸ்வச்சந்தே ந வயம் ஸ்திதா: ।
பிதரம் நோ வ்ருணீஷ்வ த்வம் யதி நோ தாஸ்யதே தவ ॥
pitṛmatyaḥ sma bhadraṃ tē svacchandē na vayaṃ sthitāḥ ।
pitaraṃ nō vṛṇīṣva tvaṃ yadi nō dāsyatē tava ॥
We told him, "We are not independent.
We are under the wings of our father.
May all bode well for you!
Please check with our father
whether he would give us in matrimony to you!"
1.33.4
தேந பாபாநுபந்தேந வசநம் ந ப்ரதீச்சதா ।
ஏவம் ப்ருவந்த்ய: ஸர்வா: ஸ்ம வாயுநா நிஹதா ப்ருஸம் ॥
tēna pāpānubandhēna vacanaṃ na pratīcchatā ।
ēvaṃ bruvantyaḥ sarvāḥ sma vāyunā nihatā bhṛṡam ॥
That wretched being would not care for our words!
Rather he dealt a blow to us like this!
1.33.5
தாஸாம் தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜா பரமதார்மிக: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாதேஜா: கந்யாஸதமநுத்தமம் ॥
tāsāṃ tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājā paramadhārmikaḥ ।
pratyuvāca mahātējāḥ kanyāṡatamanuttamam ॥
Hearing those words of the hundred girls,
the king, who was a great Dhārmika, responded:

க்ஷாந்தம் க்ஷமாவதாம் புத்ர்ய: கர்தவ்யம் ஸுமஹத்க்ருதம் ।
ஐகமத்யமுபாகம்ய குலம் சாவேக்ஷிதம் மம ॥
kṣāntaṃ kṣamāvatāṃ putryaḥ kartavyaṃ sumahatkṛtam ।
aikamatyamupāgamya kulaṃ cāvēkṣitaṃ mama ॥
My dear daughters! You responded in the
right and noble manner by forgiving
and refraining from retaliation.
All of you, having done the right thing in unison,
saved the reputation of our lineage!
1.33.7-8a
அலங்காரோ ஹி நாரீணாம் க்ஷமா து புருஷஸ்ய வா ।
துஷ்கரம் தத்தி வ: க்ஷாந்தம் த்ரிதஸேஷு விஸேஷத: ॥
யாத்ருஸீ வ: க்ஷமா புத்ர்ய: ஸர்வாஸாமவிஸேஷத: ।
alaṅkārō hi nārīṇāṃ kṣamā tu puruṣasya vā ।
duṣkaraṃ taddhi vaḥ kṣāntaṃ tridaṡēṣu viṡēṣataḥ ॥
yādṛṡī vaḥ kṣamā putryaḥ sarvāsāmaviṡēṣataḥ ।
Forbearance is a great virtue, whether for women or men.
But it is hard to be seen among the progeny of Dēvas.
It is really commendable that you all, without exception,
displayed that great quality of forbearance.
Ghṛtāci, the celestial damsel is the mother of the girls,
and hence the girls are progeny of Dēvas.
1.33.8b-9a
க்ஷமா தாநம் க்ஷமா ஸத்யம் க்ஷமா யஜ்ஞஸ்ச புத்ரிகா: ॥
க்ஷமா யஸ: க்ஷமா தர்ம: க்ஷமயா விஷ்டிதம் ஜகத் ।
kṣamā dānaṃ kṣamā satyaṃ kṣamā yajñaṡca putrikāḥ ॥
kṣamā yaṡaḥ kṣamā dharmaḥ kṣamayā viṣṭhitaṃ jagat ।
My dear daughters!
Being forbearing is being generous.
Forbearance is the building block of all endeavors.
Forbearance leads to truth.
Forbearance leads to glory.
Forbearance is at the root of righteousness.
The world is stable because of forbearance.
Understanding, reciting and practicing this one Ṡlōka alone could bring peace and prosperity to the world.
The Sanskrit word Kshama is translated in this Ṡlōka as forbearance. It also has the connotations of consideration, compassion, kindness, patience and tolerance.
1.33.9b-10
விஸ்ருஜ்ய கந்யா: காகுத்ஸ்த ராஜா த்ரிதஸவிக்ரம: ॥
மந்த்ரஜ்ஞோ மந்த்ரயாமாஸ ப்ரதாநம் ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபி: ।
தேஸகாலௌ ப்ரதாநஸ்ய ஸத்ருஸே ப்ரதிபாதநம் ॥
visṛjya kanyāḥ kākutstha rājā tridaṡavikramaḥ ॥
mantrajñō mantrayāmāsa pradānaṃ saha mantribhiḥ ।
dēṡakālau pradānasya sadṛṡē pratipādanam ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
Then that king, equal in valor to the Dēvas,
left the girls and went to his ministers
to make plans for getting them married to
a right person and at a right time and right place.
1.33.11
ஏதஸ்மிந்நேவ காலே து சூலீ நாம மஹாமுநி: ।
ஊர்த்வரேதா: ஸுபாசாரோ ப்ராஹ்மம் தப உபாகமத் ॥
ētasminnēva kālē tu cūlī nāma mahāmuniḥ ।
ūrdhvarētāḥ ṡubhācārō brāhmaṃ tapa upāgamat ॥
At about the same time, there was a great Tapasvi
by name Cūli, who was celibate, principled and
performed Tapa as prescribed in Vēdas.
1.33.12
தப்யந்தம் தம்ருஷிம் தத்ர கந்தர்வீ பர்யுபாஸதே ।
ஸோமதா நாம பத்ரம் தே ஊர்மிலாதநயா ததா ॥
tapyantaṃ tamṛṣiṃ tatra gandharvī paryupāsatē ।
sōmadā nāma bhadraṃ tē ūrmilātanayā tadā ॥
A Gandharva woman by name Sōmadā, daughter of Ūrmilā,
used to serve that Ṛshi, as he was performing Tapa.
1.33.13
ஸா ச தம் ப்ரணதா பூத்வா ஸுஸ்ரூஷணபராயணா ।
உவாஸ காலே தர்மிஷ்டா தஸ்யாஸ்துஷ்டோऽபவத்குரு: ॥
sā ca taṃ praṇatā bhūtvā ṡuṡrūṣaṇaparāyaṇā ।
uvāsa kālē dharmiṣṭhā tasyāstuṣṭō'bhavadguruḥ ॥
She served him for long time
in a humble and obedient manner
with due care and concern.
That guru was, then, very pleased with her.
1.33.14
ஸ ச தாம் காலயோகேந ப்ரோவாச ரகுநந்தந ।
பரிதுஷ்டோऽஸ்மி பத்ரம் தே கிம் கரோமி தவ ப்ரியம் ॥
sa ca tāṃ kālayōgēna prōvāca raghunandana ।
parituṣṭō'smi bhadraṃ tē kiṃ karōmi tava priyam ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
At the right time, he said to her:
"I am very pleased with you.
May all bode well for you!
What can I do to please you?"
1.33.15
பரிதுஷ்டம் முநிம் ஜ்ஞாத்வா கந்தர்வீ மதுரஸ்வரா ।
உவாச பரமப்ரீதா வாக்யஜ்ஞா வாக்யகோவிதம் ॥
parituṣṭaṃ muniṃ jñātvā gandharvī madhurasvarā ।
uvāca paramaprītā vākyajñā vākyakōvidam ॥
Knowing that he was pleased, and
feeling very happy about it,
that conversant Gandharva woman,
said in a pleasing voice to that eloquent Muni:
1.33.16
லக்ஷ்ம்யா ஸமுதிதோ ப்ராஹ்ம்யா ப்ரஹ்மபூதோ மஹாதபா: ।
ப்ராஹ்மேண தபஸா யுக்தம் புத்ரமிச்சாமி தார்மிக ॥
lakṣmyā samuditō brāhmyā brahmabhūtō mahātapāḥ ।
brāhmēṇa tapasā yuktaṃ putramicchāmi dhārmika ॥
With all the long and great Tapa you did,
you are shining with the radiance of Brahma and
there is no real difference between you and Brahma.
O Dhārmika, please grant me a son
who will be interested in Tapa of Brahma.
1.33.17
அபதிஸ்சாஸ்மி பத்ரம் தே பார்யா சாஸ்மி ந கஸ்யசித் ।
ப்ராஹ்மேணோபகதாயாஸ்ச தாதுமர்ஹஸி மே ஸுதம் ॥
apatiṡcāsmi bhadraṃ tē bhāryā cāsmi na kasyacit ।
brāhmēṇōpagatāyāṡca dātumarhasi mē sutam ॥
I have no husband. I am no one's wife.
I have been only in your service.
Please grant me a son, with the powers of your Tapa!
May all bode well for you!
1.33.18
தஸ்யா: ப்ரஸந்நோ ப்ரஹ்மர்ஷிர்ததௌ புத்ரமநுத்தமம் ।
ப்ரஹ்மதத்த இதி க்யாதம் மாநஸம் சூலிந: ஸுதம் ॥
tasyāḥ prasannō brahmarṣirdadau putramanuttamam ।
brahmadatta iti khyātaṃ mānasaṃ cūlinaḥ sutam ॥
Pleased with her request, that Brahmarshi gave
her a son by the will of his mind
who came to be known as Brahmadatta, the son of Cūli.
1.33.19
ஸ ராஜா ஸௌமதேயஸ்து புரீமத்யாவஸத்ததா ।
காம்பில்யாம் பரயா லக்ஷ்ம்யா தேவராஜோ யதா திவம் ॥
sa rājā saumadēyastu purīmadhyāvasattadā ।
kāmpilyāṃ parayā lakṣmyā dēvarājō yathā divam ॥
That son of Sōmada lived with riches
in a city called Kāmpilya, like Indra in Swarga.
1.33.20
ஸ புத்திம் க்ருதவாந் ராஜா குஸநாப: ஸுதார்மிக: ।
ப்ரஹ்மதத்தாய காகுத்ஸ்த தாதும் கந்யாஸதம் ததா ॥
sa buddhiṃ kṛtavān rājā kuṡanābhaḥ sudhārmikaḥ ।
brahmadattāya kākutstha dātuṃ kanyāṡataṃ tadā ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
The Dhārmika king Kuṡanābha thought of giving
his one hundred daughters in matrimony to that Brahmadatta.
1.33.21
தமாஹூய மஹாதேஜா ப்ரஹ்மதத்தம் மஹீபதி: ।
ததௌ கந்யாஸதம் ராஜா ஸுப்ரீதேநாந்தராத்மநா ॥
tamāhūya mahātējā brahmadattaṃ mahīpatiḥ ।
dadau kanyāṡataṃ rājā suprītēnāntarātmanā ॥
That radiant king, the ruler of the world (Kuṡanābha)
invited Brahmadatta and gave him
his one hundred daughters in matrimony
completely happy and pleased about it in his heart.
1.33.22
யதாக்ரமம் தத: பாணீஞ்ஜக்ராஹ ரகுநந்தந ।
ப்ரஹ்மதத்தோ மஹீபாலஸ்தாஸாம் தேவபதிர்யதா ॥
yathākramaṃ tataḥ pāṇīñjagrāha raghunandana ।
brahmadattō mahīpālastāsāṃ dēvapatiryathā ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
The ruler of the world, the Indra-like Brahmadatta
took the hand of each one of the hundred girls, one by one.
1.33.23
ஸ்ப்ருஷ்டமாத்ரே தத: பாணௌ விகுப்ஜா விகதஜ்வரா: ।
யுக்தா: பரமயா லக்ஷ்ம்யா பபு: கந்யாஸதம் ததா ॥
spṛṣṭamātrē tataḥ pāṇau vikubjā vigatajvarāḥ ।
yuktāḥ paramayā lakṣmyā babhuḥ kanyāṡataṃ tadā ॥
As soon as he touched their hands with his,
those one hundred girls shined splendidly,
freed from all their sufferings and
from their invalid status.
1.33.24
ஸ த்ருஷ்ட்வா வாயுநா முக்தா: குஸநாபோ மஹீபதி: ।
பபூவ பரமப்ரீதோ ஹர்ஷம் லேபே புந:புந: ॥
sa dṛṣṭvā vāyunā muktāḥ kuṡanābhō mahīpatiḥ ।
babhūva paramaprītō harṣaṃ lēbhē punaḥpunaḥ ॥
Seeing the girls freed from the
problems caused by the god of Wind,
Kuṡanābha, the ruler of the world, felt extremely happy,
recollecting it again and again.
1.33.25
க்ருதோத்வாஹம் து ராஜாநம் ப்ரஹ்மதத்தம் மஹீபதி: ।
ஸதாரம் ப்ரேஷயாமாஸ ஸோபாத்யாயகணம் ததா ॥
kṛtōdvāhaṃ tu rājānaṃ brahmadattaṃ mahīpatiḥ ।
sadāraṃ prēṣayāmāsa sōpādhyāyagaṇaṃ tadā ॥
Kuṡanābha sent off the newly married Brahmadatta,
along with his new wives and all the Purōhitas.
1.33.26
ஸோமதாபி ஸுஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டா புத்ரஸ்ய ஸத்ருஸீம் க்ரியாம் ।
யதாந்யாயம் ச கந்தர்வீ ஸ்நுஷாஸ்தா: ப்ரத்யநந்தத ।
ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட்வாஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட்வா ச தா: கந்யா: குஸநாபம் ப்ரஸஸ்ய ச ॥
sōmadāpi susaṃhṛṣṭā putrasya sadṛṡīṃ kriyām ।
yathānyāyaṃ ca gandharvī snuṣāstāḥ pratyanandata ।
spṛṣṭvāspṛṣṭvā ca tāḥ kanyāḥ kuṡanābhaṃ praṡasya ca ॥
Sōmada, the Gandharva woman, felt very happy about
the marriage of her son Brahmadatta.
She thanked and praised Kuṡanābha.
She touched all of her daughters-in-law,
one by one and congratulated them.
Vālmeeki brushes through, when recounting stories and events that were already well known.
But he always pauses to describe the human emotions that are exchanged among the people of the story, giving it life and flavor.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே த்ரயஸ்த்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē trayastriṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty third Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 1047 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
