Baala Kaanda - Sarga 27
Viṡwāmitra passes on the extremely powerful, solemn and potent Astras to Rāma in this Sarga. Rāma, a young hero, is inheriting and getting connected with the treasured, fabled and magical Astras of antiquity, with lineage tracing back all the way to the creator, Lord Brahma.
Rāmāyaṇa is written to be performed and sung to people, rather than read. This Sarga makes a gripping scene especially in the styles of Yakshagāna and Kūcipūdi, and perhaps in other such powerful forms of storytelling that I may not be aware.
1.27.1
அத தாம் ரஜநீமுஷ்ய விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாயஸா: ।
ப்ரஹஸ்ய ராகவம் வாக்யமுவாச மதுராக்ஷரம் ॥
atha tāṃ rajanīmuṣya viṡvāmitrō mahāyaṡāḥ ।
prahasya rāghavaṃ vākyamuvāca madhurākṣaram ॥
After thus spending the night there,
the renowned Viṡwāmitra said these pleasing words
to the prince of Raghu dynasty with a smile:
1.27.2
பரிதுஷ்டோऽஸ்மி பத்ரம் தே ராஜபுத்ர மஹாயஸ: ।
ப்ரீத்யா பரமயா யுக்தோ ததாம்யஸ்த்ராணி ஸர்வஸ: ॥
parituṣṭō'smi bhadraṃ tē rājaputra mahāyaṡaḥ ।
prītyā paramayā yuktō dadāmyastrāṇi sarvaṡaḥ ॥
I am exceedingly pleased with you,
O prince of great renown! May all bode well for you!
With infinite pleasure I shall impart
the knowledge of all celestial Astras to you!
1.27.3-4a
தேவாஸுரகணாந் வாபி ஸகந்தர்வோரகாநபி ।
யைரமித்ராந் ப்ரஸஹ்யாஜௌ வஸீக்ருத்ய ஜயிஷ்யஸி ॥
தாநி திவ்யாநி பத்ரம் தே ததாம்யஸ்த்ராணி ஸர்வஸ: ।
dēvāsuragaṇān vāpi sagandharvōragānapi ।
yairamitrān prasahyājau vaṡīkṛtya jayiṣyasi ॥
tāni divyāni bhadraṃ tē dadāmyastrāṇi sarvaṡaḥ ।
I will give you all the special Astras that
would subdue enemies in a fight,
even if they have the help of all the
Dēvas, Asuras, Gandharvas and Uragas combined!
1.27.4b-7a
தண்டசக்ரம் மஹத்திவ்யம் தவ தாஸ்யாமி ராகவ ॥
தர்மசக்ரம் ததோ வீர! காலசக்ரம் ததைவ ச।
விஷ்ணுசக்ரம் ததாத்யுக்ரமைந்த்ரமஸ்த்ரம் ததைவ ச ॥
வஜ்ரமஸ்த்ரம் நரஸ்ரேஷ்ட ஸைவம் ஸூலவரம் ததா ।
அஸ்த்ரம் ப்ரஹ்மஸிரஸ்சைவ ஐஷீகமபி ராகவ ॥
ததாமி தே மஹாபாஹோ ப்ராஹ்மமஸ்த்ரமநுத்தமம் ।
daṇḍacakraṃ mahaddivyaṃ tava dāsyāmi rāghava ॥
dharmacakraṃ tatō vīra! kālacakraṃ tathaiva ca।
viṣṇucakraṃ tathātyugramaindramastraṃ tathaiva ca ॥
vajramastraṃ naraṡrēṣṭha ṡaivaṃ ṡūlavaraṃ tathā ।
astraṃ brahmaṡiraṡcaiva aiṣīkamapi rāghava ॥
dadāmi tē mahābāhō brāhmamastramanuttamam ।
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Here I give you the great exalted Daṇḍa Chakra.
O Veera! Here I give the Dharma Chakra and Kāla Chakra.
O best among men! Here I give you the Astras
Vishṇu Chakra, the enraging Indrāstra, the Vajrāstra,
and the best Javelin of Ṡiva,
the Brahmasira Astra and the Isheekāstra!
O mighty armed! Here I give you the unparalleled Brahmāstra!
Boys, especially between ages three and ten, would love this Ṡlōka. The mighty and powerful always catch their imagination. It is the same imagination that the modern toy industry and video game industry depend upon.
It is also interesting that these very names are borrowed by the fireworks industry of Ṡivakāsi, Tamil Nadu for naming various types of fireworks.
1.27.7b-8a
கதே த்வே சைவ காகுத்ஸ்த மோதகீ ஸிகரீ உபே ॥
ப்ரதீப்தே நரஸார்தூல ப்ரயச்சாமி ந்ருபாத்மஜ ।
gadē dvē caiva kākutstha mōdakī ṡikharī ubhē ॥
pradīptē naraṡārdūla prayacchāmi nṛpātmaja ।
O prince of Kākutstha lineage, O tiger among men!
Here I give you two blazing clubs named Mōdaki and Ṡikhari.
1.27.8b-9a
தர்மபாஸமஹம் ராம காலபாஸம் ததைவ ச ॥
பாஸம் வாருணமஸ்த்ரம் ச ததாம்யஹமநுத்தமம் ।
dharmapāṡamahaṃ rāma kālapāṡaṃ tathaiva ca ॥
pāṡaṃ vāruṇamastraṃ ca dadāmyahamanuttamam ।
O Rāma, here I give you Dhārmapāsa, Kālapāsa,
and the exceptional Vārunastra Pāsam!
1.27.9b-10a
அஸநீ த்வே ப்ரயச்சாமி ஸுஷ்கார்த்ரே ரகுநந்தந ॥
ததாமி சாஸ்த்ரம் பைநாகமஸ்த்ரம் நாராயணம் ததா ।
aṡanī dvē prayacchāmi ṡuṣkārdrē raghunandana ॥
dadāmi cāstraṃ painākamastraṃ nārāyaṇaṃ tathā ।
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Here I give two thunderbolts, the dry one and the wet one!
And I give you Painākastra and Nārāyanāstra.
1.27.10b-11a
ஆக்நேயமஸ்த்ரம் தயிதம் ஸிகரம் நாம நாமத: ॥
வாயவ்யம் ப்ரதநம் நாம ததாமி ச தவாநக ।
āgnēyamastraṃ dayitaṃ ṡikharaṃ nāma nāmataḥ ॥
vāyavyaṃ prathanaṃ nāma dadāmi ca tavānagha ।
O unaffiliated one! Here I give an Astra of Agni
called Ṡikhara and an Astra of Vāyu called Prathana.
Agni is the god of fire. Vāyu is the god of wind.
1.27.11b-12a
அஸ்த்ரம் ஹயஸிரோ நாம க்ரௌஞ்சமஸ்த்ரம் ததைவ ச ॥
ஸக்தித்வயம் ச காகுத்ஸ்த ததாமி தவ ராகவ ।
astraṃ hayaṡirō nāma krauñcamastraṃ tathaiva ca ॥
ṡaktidvayaṃ ca kākutstha dadāmi tava rāghava ।
O prince of Raghu dynasty and Kākutstha lineage!
Here I give you two Astras called
Hayasira and Krounca and also two Ṡaktis.
1.27.12b-13a
கங்காலம் முஸலம் கோரம் காபாலமத கங்கணம் ॥
தாரயந்த்யஸுரா யாநி ததாம்யேதாநி ஸர்வஸ: ।
kaṅkālaṃ musalaṃ ghōraṃ kāpālamatha kaṅkaṇam ॥
dhārayantyasurā yāni dadāmyētāni sarvaṡaḥ ।
Here I give you all the fearsome pounding stones
like Kaṅkāla, Kāpāla and Kaṅkaṇa
that are used by Asuras.
1.27.13b-14a
வைத்யாதரம் மஹாஸ்த்ரம் ச நந்தநம் நாம நாமத: ॥
அஸிரத்நம் மஹாபாஹோ ததாமி ந்ருவராத்மஜ ।
vaidyādharaṃ mahāstraṃ ca nandanaṃ nāma nāmataḥ ॥
asiratnaṃ mahābāhō dadāmi nṛvarātmaja ।
O mighty armed prince! Here I give
a mighty Astra called Vaidyādhara
and a special sword called Nandana.
1.27.14b-15a
காந்தர்வமஸ்த்ரம் தயிதம் மாநவம் நாம நாமத: ॥
ப்ரஸ்வாபநப்ரஸமநே தத்மி ஸௌரம் ச ராகவ ।
gāndharvamastraṃ dayitaṃ mānavaṃ nāma nāmataḥ ॥
prasvāpanapraṡamanē dadmi sauraṃ ca rāghava ।
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Here I give an Astra called Gāndharva
and a much wanted Astra called Mānava,
one capable of inducing sleep and the
other capable of waking up from sleep
and also an Astra called Soura.
1.27.15b-17a
தர்பணம் ஸோஷணம் சைவ ஸந்தாபநவிலாபநே ॥
மதநம் சைவ துர்த்தர்ஷம் கந்தர்பதயிதம் ததா ।
பைஸாசமஸ்த்ரம் தயிதம் மோஹநம் நாம நாமத: ॥
ப்ரதீச்ச நரஸார்தூல ராஜபுத்ர மஹாயஸ: ।
darpaṇaṃ ṡōṣaṇaṃ caiva santāpanavilāpanē ॥
madanaṃ caiva durddharṣaṃ kandarpadayitaṃ tathā ।
paiṡācamastraṃ dayitaṃ mōhanaṃ nāma nāmataḥ ॥
pratīccha naraṡārdūla rājaputra mahāyaṡaḥ ।
O renowned prince! O tiger among men!
Here I give the Astras called Darpaṇa,
Sōshaṇa, Santāpana, Vilāpana
and the invincible Madana, that is dear to Kandarpa
and the Mōhana, that is dear to the Pisācas!
1.27.17b-19
தாமஸம் நரஸார்தூல ஸௌமநம் ச மஹாபல ।
ஸம்வர்தம் சைவ துர்தர்ஷம் மௌஸலம் ச ந்ருபாத்மஜ ।
ஸத்யமஸ்த்ரம் மஹாபாஹோ ததா மாயாதரம் பரம் ।
கோரம் தேஜ:ப்ரபம் நாம த்வஷ்டுரஸ்த்ரம் ஸுதாமநம் ।
தாருணம் ச பகஸ்யாபி ஸீதேஷுமத மாநவம் ॥
tāmasaṃ naraṡārdūla saumanaṃ ca mahābala ।
saṃvardhaṃ caiva durdharṣaṃ mausalaṃ ca nṛpātmaja ।
satyamastraṃ mahābāhō tathā māyādharaṃ param ।
ghōraṃ tējaḥprabhaṃ nāma tvaṣṭurastraṃ sudāmanam ।
dāruṇaṃ ca bhagasyāpi ṡītēṣumatha mānavam ॥
O tiger among men! O mighty strong and mighty armed prince!
Here I give you Tāmasa, Soumana,
invincible Samvardha, Mousala,
Satyāstra, the ultimate Māyādhara,
the fearsome Tējaprabha,
Sudāmana, the Astra of Tvashṭu
Ṡitēshu, the terrible Astra of Bhaga and Mānavāstra.
1.27.20
ஏதாந் ராம மஹாபாஹோ காமரூபாந் மஹாபலாந் ।
க்ருஹாண பரமோதாராந் க்ஷிப்ரமேவ ந்ருபாத்மஜ ॥
ētān rāma mahābāhō kāmarūpān mahābalān ।
gṛhāṇa paramōdārān kṣipramēva nṛpātmaja ॥
O Rāma, the mighty armed prince!
Receive right away these
mighty strong, exalted Astras
that can take multiple forms at will.
1.27.21
ஸ்திதஸ்து ப்ராங்முகோ பூத்வா ஸுசிர்முநிவரஸ்ததா ।
ததௌ ராமாய ஸுப்ரீதோ மந்த்ரக்ராமமநுத்தமம் ॥
sthitastu prāṅmukhō bhūtvā ṡucirmunivarastadā ।
dadau rāmāya suprītō mantragrāmamanuttamam ॥
The eminent Muni purified himself and turned east
and gave the entire collection of
unequaled Astras to Rāma.
1.27.22
ஸர்வஸங்க்ரஹணம் யேஷாம் தைவதைரபி துர்லபம் ।
தாந்யஸ்த்ராணி ததா விப்ரோ ராகவாய ந்யவேதயத் ॥
sarvasaṅgrahaṇaṃ yēṣāṃ daivatairapi durlabham ।
tānyastrāṇi tadā viprō rāghavāya nyavēdayat ॥
Thus the Brāhmaṇa gave those Astras
which in their entirety, are difficult
to be obtained even by Dēvas,
to the prince of Raghu dynasty.
1.27.23
ஜபதஸ்து முநேஸ்தஸ்ய விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ய தீமத: ।
உபதஸ்துர்மஹார்ஹாணி ஸர்வாண்யஸ்த்ராணி ராகவம் ॥
japatastu munēstasya viṡvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ ।
upatasthurmahārhāṇi sarvāṇyastrāṇi rāghavam ॥
As the eminent and empowered Muni, Viṡwāmitra
called upon them, all the venerable Astras
joined the prince of Raghu dynasty.
1.27.24
ஊசுஸ்ச முதிதா: ஸர்வே ராமம் ப்ராஞ்ஜலயஸ்ததா ।
இமே ஸ்ம பரமோதாரா: கிங்கராஸ்தவ ராகவ ॥
ūcuṡca muditāḥ sarvē rāmaṃ prāñjalayastadā ।
imē sma paramōdārāḥ kiṅkarāstava rāghava ॥
All the revered and solemn Astras said
with folded hands to Rāma:
We are happy to be at your service hereafter!
1.27.25
ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய ச காகுத்ஸ்த: ஸமாலப்ய ச பாணிநா ।
மாநஸா மே பவிஷ்யத்வமிதி தாநப்யசோதயத் ॥
pratigṛhya ca kākutsthaḥ samālabhya ca pāṇinā ।
mānasā mē bhaviṣyadhvamiti tānabhyacōdayat ॥
The prince of Kākutstha lineage
received them by symbolically touching them,
and ordered them to reside in his mind.
1.27.26
தத: ப்ரீதமநா ராமோ விஸ்வாமித்ரம் மஹாமுநிம் ।
அபிவாத்ய மஹாதேஜா கமநாயோபசக்ரமே ॥
tataḥ prītamanā rāmō viṡvāmitraṃ mahāmunim ।
abhivādya mahātējā gamanāyōpacakramē ॥
The radiant and pleased Rāma, then
paid thankful respects to the eminent Muni, Viṡwāmitra
and became ready for moving on with the journey.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே ஸப்தவிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē saptaviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twenty seventh Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 892 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
