Baala Kaanda - Sarga 25
In this Sarga Viṡwāmitra continues with the story of Tāṭaka to Rāma. He tells about how the beautiful Tāṭaka turned into a Rākshasi because of a curse and began causing destruction. He asks Rāma to kill her in order to protect people.
1.25.1
அத தஸ்யாப்ரமேயஸ்ய முநேர்வசநமுத்தமம் ।
ஸ்ருத்வா புருஷஸார்தூல: ப்ரத்யுவாச ஸுபாம் கிரம் ॥
atha tasyāpramēyasya munērvacanamuttamam ।
ṡrutvā puruṣaṡārdūlaḥ pratyuvāca ṡubhāṃ giram ॥
Hearing those revealing words of the Muni,
whose faculties were beyond comprehension,
the tiger among men (Rāma) asked a genuine question:
1.25.2
அல்பவீர்யா யதா யக்ஷா: ஸ்ரூயந்தே முநிபுங்கவ ।
கதம் நாகஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய தாரயத்யபலா பலம் ॥
alpavīryā yadā yakṣāḥ ṡrūyantē munipuṅgava ।
kathaṃ nāgasahasrasya dhārayatyabalā balam ॥
O eminent Muni! It is generally heard
that Yakshas are not very strong.
How did that woman happen to be
as strong as a thousand elephants?
1.25.3
விஸ்வாமித்ரோऽப்ரவீத்வாக்யம் ஸ்ருணு யேந பலோத்தரா ।
வரதாநக்ருதம் வீர்யம் தாரயத்யபலா பலம் ॥
viṡvāmitrō'bravīdvākyaṃ ṡṛṇu yēna balōttarā ।
varadānakṛtaṃ vīryaṃ dhārayatyabalā balam ॥
Viṡwāmitra said: "Let me tell you
about the boon, because of which
that woman acquired such defying strength!"
1.25.4
பூர்வமாஸீந்மஹாயக்ஷ: ஸுகேதுர்நாம வீர்யவாந் ।
அநபத்ய: ஸுபாசார: ஸ ச தேபே மஹத்தப: ॥
pūrvamāsīnmahāyakṣaḥ sukēturnāma vīryavān ।
anapatyaḥ ṡubhācāraḥ sa ca tēpē mahattapaḥ ॥
Once upon a time, there was a great
assiduous Yaksha, by name Sukētu.
He did not have offspring and hence he performed
great Tapa following a sacred regimen.
1.25.5-6
பிதாமஹஸ்து ஸம்ப்ரீதஸ்தஸ்ய யக்ஷபதேஸ்ததா ।
கந்யாரத்நம் ததௌ ராம தாடகாம் நாம நாமத: ।
ததௌ நாகஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய பலம் சாஸ்யா: பிதாமஹ: ।
ந த்வேவ புத்ரம் யக்ஷாய ததௌ ப்ரஹ்மா மஹாயஸா: ॥
pitāmahastu samprītastasya yakṣapatēstadā ।
kanyāratnaṃ dadau rāma tāṭakāṃ nāma nāmataḥ ।
dadau nāgasahasrasya balaṃ cāsyāḥ pitāmahaḥ ।
na tvēva putraṃ yakṣāya dadau brahmā mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
O Rāma! The pleased and renowned Brahma,
instead of blessing the lord of Yakshas with sons,
gave him a daughter by name Tāṭaka,
who was as strong as a thousand elephants.
1.25.7
தாம் து ஜாதாம் விவர்தந்தீம் ரூபயௌவநஸாலிநீம்।
ஜர்ஜபுத்ராய ஸுந்தாய ததௌ பார்யாம் யஸஸ்விநீம்। ॥
tāṃ tu jātāṃ vivardhantīṃ rūpayauvanaṡālinīm।
jharjhaputrāya sundāya dadau bhāryāṃ yaṡasvinīm। ॥
As she grew up to be young, beautiful and well known,
he gave her in marriage to Sunda, son of Jharjha.
1.25.8
கஸ்யசித்த்வத காலஸ்ய யக்ஷீ புத்ரமஜாயத ।
மாரீசம் நாம துர்த்தஷம் ய: ஸாபாத்ராக்ஷஸோऽபவத் ॥
kasyacittvatha kālasya yakṣī putramajāyata ।
mārīcaṃ nāma durddhaṣaṃ yaḥ ṡāpādrākṣasō'bhavat ॥
That Yakshiṇi, after some time, gave birth to an
invincible son by name Māreeca,
who became a Rākshasa because of a curse.
1.25.9
ஸுந்தே து நிஹதே ராம ஸாகஸ்த்யம் முநிபுங்கவம் ।
தாடகா ஸஹ புத்ரேண ப்ரதர்ஷயிதுமிச்சதி ॥
sundē tu nihatē rāma sāgastyaṃ munipuṅgavam ।
tāṭakā saha putrēṇa pradharṣayitumicchati ॥
Sunda was annihilated by Agastya, a great Ṛshi.
And Tāṭaka along with her son,
wanted to attack Agastya.
There is a different story why Agastya annihilated Sunda.
1.25.10-12
பக்ஷார்தம் ஜாதஸம்ரம்பா கர்ஜந்தீ ஸாऽப்யதாவத ।
ஆபதந்தீம் து தாம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா அகஸ்த்யோ பகவாந்ருஷி: ।
ராக்ஷஸத்வம் பஜஸ்வேதி மாரீசம் வ்யாஜஹார ஸ: ।
அகஸ்த்ய: பரமக்ருத்தஸ்தாடகாமபி ஸப்தவாந் ।
புருஷாதீ மஹாயக்ஷீ விரூபா விக்ருதாநநா ।
இதம் ரூபம் விஹாயாऽத தாருணம் ரூபமஸ்து தே ॥
bhakṣārthaṃ jātasaṃrambhā garjantī sā'bhyadhāvata ।
āpatantīṃ tu tāṃ dṛṣṭvā agastyō bhagavānṛṣiḥ ।
rākṣasatvaṃ bhajasvēti mārīcaṃ vyājahāra saḥ ।
agastyaḥ paramakruddhastāṭakāmapi ṡaptavān ।
puruṣādī mahāyakṣī virūpā vikṛtānanā ।
idaṃ rūpaṃ vihāyā'tha dāruṇaṃ rūpamastu tē ॥
She dashed on, roaring, to eat Agastya.
Seeing her approaching, the Bhagawan, the Ṛshi Agastya
became very angry and cursed her to become a
Rākshasi and acquire an ugly face and disgusting body
losing the current beautiful Yaksha body,
and to feed on human flesh.
He also cursed Māreecha to become a Rākshasa.
1.25.13
ஸைஷா ஸாபக்ருதாமர்ஷா தாடகா க்ரோதமூர்ச்சிதா ।
தேஸமுத்ஸாதயத்யேநமகஸ்த்யசரிதம் ஸுபம் ॥
saiṣā ṡāpakṛtāmarṣā tāṭakā krōdhamūrcchitā ।
dēṡamutsādayatyēnamagastyacaritaṃ ṡubham ॥
Enraged at the curse and becoming senseless,
Tāṭaka destroyed this sacred land where Agastya treaded.
1.25.14
ஏநாம் ராகவ துர்வ்ருத்தாம் யக்ஷீம் பரமதாருணாம் ।
கோப்ராஹ்மணஹிதார்தாய ஜஹி துஷ்டபராக்ரமாம் ॥
ēnāṃ rāghava durvṛttāṃ yakṣīṃ paramadāruṇām ।
gōbrāhmaṇahitārthāya jahi duṣṭaparākramām ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
Kill this dreadful, menacing and formidable Yakshi
for the sake of Cows and Brāhmaṇas!
Yajñas are the medium for humans to connect to Dēvas. That connection is facilitated by Brāhmaṇas and Cows.
Brāhmaṇas lead selfless, ascetic lives and follow arduous spiritual regimen required for performing Yajñas.
Cows selflessly give the necessary ingredients like milk and butter to perform the Yajñas.
Thus Cows and Brāhmaṇas are essential for everyone to get the blessings of Dēvas and hence they are considered important and treated with reverence.
1.25.15
ந ஹ்யேநாம் ஸாபஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஷ்டாம் கஸ்சிதுத்ஸஹதே புமாந் ।
நிஹந்தும் த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு த்வாம்ருதே ரகுநந்தந ॥
na hyēnāṃ ṡāpasaṃspṛṣṭāṃ kaṡcidutsahatē pumān ।
nihantuṃ triṣu lōkēṣu tvāmṛtē raghunandana ॥
O prince of Raghu dynasty!
None other than you, in all the three worlds
is capable of annihilating
this woman who is under the spell of a curse.
1.25.16
ந ஹி தே ஸ்த்ரீவதக்ருதே க்ருணா கார்யா நரோத்தம ।
சாதுர்வர்ண்யஹிதார்தாய கர்தவ்யம் ராஜஸூநுநா ॥
na hi tē strīvadhakṛtē ghṛṇā kāryā narōttama ।
cāturvarṇyahitārthāya kartavyaṃ rājasūnunā ॥
O best among men! Don't let compassion
towards women stop you from killing her.
It would be the responsibility of the son of a king
to get rid of her for the sake of the people of all four Varnas.
1.25.17
ந்ருஸம்ஸமந்ருஸம்ஸம் வா ப்ரஜாரக்ஷணகாரணாத் ।
பாதகம் வா ஸதோஷம் வா கர்தவ்யம் ரக்ஷதா ஸதாம் ॥
nṛṡaṃsamanṛṡaṃsaṃ vā prajārakṣaṇakāraṇāt ।
pātakaṃ vā sadōṣaṃ vā kartavyaṃ rakṣatā satām ॥
For the sake of protecting people, you have to
do it without considering the cruelty
or inappropriateness involved in it
and personal Pāpas that may ensue.
Rāmāyaṇa reinforces the theme that a king's ultimate responsibility is the protection of people. All other considerations, inappropriateness, incidental casualties and disturbances to personal life should be secondary to a king.
1.25.18
ராஜ்யபாரநியுக்தாநாமேஷ தர்ம: ஸநாதந: ।
அதர்ம்யாம் ஜஹி காகுத்ஸ்த தர்மோ ஹ்யஸ்யா ந வித்யதே ॥
rājyabhāraniyuktānāmēṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ।
adharmyāṃ jahi kākutstha dharmō hyasyā na vidyatē ॥
This has been the time honored tradition
for those who bear the weight of ruling a kingdom.
Hence kill this woman of Adharma.
She has no sense, whatsoever, of following Dharma.
1.25.19
ஸ்ரூயதே ஹி புரா ஸக்ரோ விரோசநஸுதாம் ந்ருப ।
ப்ருதிவீம் ஹந்துமிச்சந்தீம் மந்தராமப்யஸூதயத் ॥
ṡrūyatē hi purā ṡakrō virōcanasutāṃ nṛpa ।
pṛthivīṃ hantumicchantīṃ mantharāmabhyasūdayat ॥
O king! We hear that once upon a time,
Ṡakra had to kill Manthara, daughter of Virōcana,
because she was set on killing the earth itself!
1.25.20
விஷ்ணுநா ச புரா ராம ப்ருகுபத்நீ த்ருடவ்ரதா ।
அநிந்த்ரம் லோகமிச்சந்தீ காவ்யமாதா நிஷூதிதா ॥
viṣṇunā ca purā rāma bhṛgupatnī dṛḍhavratā ।
anindraṃ lōkamicchantī kāvyamātā niṣūditā ॥
Not only that, Vishṇu also, once upon a time,
had to kill the wife of Bhṛgu and mother of Ṡukra
when she tried to rid the world of Indra.
1.25.21
ஏதைஸ்சாந்யைஸ்ச பஹுபீ ராஜபுத்ர மஹாத்மபி: ।
அதர்மஸஹிதா நார்யோ ஹதா: புருஷஸத்தமை: ॥
ētaiṡcānyaiṡca bahubhī rājaputra mahātmabhiḥ ।
adharmasahitā nāryō hatāḥ puruṣasattamaiḥ ॥
O son of a king! Not only these Mahātmas,
but many other noble men had to kill
women who were on the path of Adharma.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சவிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pañcaviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twenty fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

அதர்மஸஹிதா நார்யோ ஹதா: புருஷஸத்தமை: ॥
ētaiṡcānyaiṡca bahubhī rājaputra mahātmabhiḥ ।
adharmasahitā nāryō hatāḥ puruṣasattamaiḥ ॥
O son of a king! Not only these Mahātmas,
but many other noble men had to kill
women who were on the path of Adharma.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சவிம்ஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē pañcaviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twenty fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
