Baala Kaanda - Sarga 12
In this Sarga Daṡaratha gets the blessings of the Ṛshis to start the Yajña, and orders the ministers to make the necessary preparations.
This Sarga has about the same content as Sarga 8. In fact, some of the Ṡlōkas are exactly the same as those of Sarga 8. The duplication can be attributed to the variations in multiple hand-written versions, before the print versions that came to be known as Eastern Edition and Southern Edition emerged. Please refer to the commentary in Sarga 4, for more details about the two editions.
The flow would be more logical and smooth if Sarga 8 is removed from its place and merged with this Sarga 12.
1.12.1
தத: காலே பஹுதிதே கஸ்மிம்ஸ்சித்ஸுமநோஹரே ।
வஸந்தே ஸமநுப்ராப்தே ராஜ்ஞோ யஷ்டும் மநோऽபவத் ॥
tataḥ kālē bahutithē kasmiṃṡcitsumanōharē ।
vasantē samanuprāptē rājñō yaṣṭuṃ manō'bhavat ॥
Then, after a few moons, arrived a beautiful spring.
The king felt like starting the Yajña.
1.12.2
தத: ப்ரஸாத்ய ஸிரஸா தம் விப்ரம் தேவவர்ணிநம் ।
யஜ்ஞாய வரயாமாஸ ஸந்தாநார்தம் குலஸ்ய வை ॥
tataḥ prasādya ṡirasā taṃ vipraṃ dēvavarṇinam ।
yajñāya varayāmāsa santānārthaṃ kulasya vai ॥
After paying obeisance and getting the blessings
of the Brāhmaṇa, who can be compared to Dēvas,
he chose him to be the conductor of the Yajña
that would give him offspring to
continue his dynasty after him.
1.12.3
ததேதி ச ஸ ராஜாநமுவாச ச ஸுஸத்க்ருத: ।
ஸம்பாரா: ஸம்ப்ரியந்தாம் தே துரகஸ்ச விமுச்யதாம் ॥
tathēti ca sa rājānamuvāca ca susatkṛtaḥ ।
sambhārāḥ sambhriyantāṃ tē turagaṡca vimucyatām ॥
The well-honored Brāhmaṇa said:
"Let all the arrangements be made
and let the horse be released!"
1.12.4-5
ததோ ராஜாப்ரவீத்வாக்யம் ஸுமந்த்ரம் மந்த்ரிஸத்தமம் ।
ஸுமந்த்ராவாஹய க்ஷிப்ரம்ருத்விஜோ ப்ரஹ்மவாதிந: ॥
ஸுயஜ்ஞம் வாமதேவம் ச ஜாபாலிமத காஸ்யபம் ।
புரோஹிதம் வஸிஷ்டம் ச யே சாப்யந்யே த்விஜாதய: ॥
tatō rājābravīdvākyaṃ sumantraṃ mantrisattamam ।
sumantrāvāhaya kṣipramṛtvijō brahmavādinaḥ ॥
suyajñaṃ vāmadēvaṃ ca jābālimatha kāṡyapam ।
purōhitaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ ca yē cāpyanyē dvijātayaḥ ॥
Then the king said to that prominent minister Sumantra:
“O Sumantra! please arrange for the presence of
all the Ṛtviks, who delve into the secrets of the universe,
like Suyajña, Vāmadēva, Jābāli, Kāṡyapa,
and Vasishṭha, the Purōhita and other eminent Brāhmaṇas.
1.12.6
தத: ஸுமந்த்ரஸ்த்வரிதம் கத்வா த்வரிதவிக்ரம: ।
ஸமாநயத்ஸ தாந் ஸர்வாந் ஸமர்தாந் வேதபாரகாந் ॥
tataḥ sumantrastvaritaṃ gatvā tvaritavikramaḥ ।
samānayatsa tān sarvān samarthān vēdapāragān ॥
The expedient Sumantra, immediately arranged
for the presence of all of them, who were well versed in Vēdas.
1.12.7
தாந் பூஜயித்வா தர்மாத்மா ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ததா ।
தர்மார்தஸஹிதம் யுக்தம் ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
tān pūjayitvā dharmātmā rājā daṡarathastadā ।
dharmārthasahitaṃ yuktaṃ ṡlakṣṇaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
King Daṡaratha, the Dharmātmā
paid respects to all the invitees
and said the following words,
in pursuance of Dharma and Artha.
1.12.8
மம லாலப்யமாநஸ்ய புத்ரார்தம் நாஸ்தி வை ஸுகம் ।
ததர்தம் ஹயமேதேந யக்ஷ்யாமீதி மதிர்மம ॥
mama lālapyamānasya putrārthaṃ nāsti vai sukham ।
tadarthaṃ hayamēdhēna yakṣyāmīti matirmama ॥
I am not happy. My heart is yearning for offspring.
Hence I am thinking of performing Aṡwamēdha Yāga.
1.12.9
ததஹம் யஷ்டுமிச்சாமி ஸாஸ்த்ரத்ருஷ்டேந கர்மணா ।
ருஷிபுத்ரப்ரபாவேந காமாந் ப்ராப்ஸ்யாமி சாப்யஹம் ॥
tadahaṃ yaṣṭumicchāmi ṡāstradṛṣṭēna karmaṇā ।
ṛṣiputraprabhāvēna kāmān prāpsyāmi cāpyaham ॥
I would like to perform the Yajña
in strict accordance with the Ṡāstras.
And I am hoping to get my desire fulfilled
with the able guidance of the son of the Ṛshi (Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga).
1.12.10
தத: ஸாத்விதி தத்வாக்யம் ப்ராஹ்மணா: ப்ரத்யபூஜயந் ।
வஸிஷ்டப்ரமுகா: ஸர்வே பார்திவஸ்ய முகாச்ச்யுதம் ॥
tataḥ sādhviti tadvākyaṃ brāhmaṇāḥ pratyapūjayan ।
vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarvē pārthivasya mukhāccyutam ॥
Vasishṭha and other Brāhmaṇas
responded saying that it is, indeed, a good idea.
1.12.11
ருஸ்யஸ்ருங்கபுரோகாஸ்ச ப்ரத்யூசுர்ந்ருபதிம் ததா ।
ஸம்பாரா: ஸம்ப்ரியந்தாம் தே துரகஸ்ச விமுச்யதாம் ॥
ṛṡyaṡṛṅgapurōgāṡca pratyūcurnṛpatiṃ tadā ।
sambhārāḥ sambhriyantāṃ tē turagaṡca vimucyatām ॥
Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga and all the others, then, said to the king:
"Let all the arrangements be made
and let the horse be released!"
1.12.12
ஸர்வதா ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸே புத்ராம்ஸ்சதுரோऽமிதவிக்ரமாந் ।
யஸ்ய தே தார்மிகீ புத்திரியம் புத்ரார்தமாகதா ॥
sarvathā prāpsyasē putrāṃṡcaturō'mitavikramān ।
yasya tē dhārmikī buddhiriyaṃ putrārthamāgatā ॥
Your desire to have offspring is very much
natural, appropriate and in accordance with Dharma.
You will, indeed, be blessed with
four exceptionally chivalrous sons.
1.12.13
தத: ப்ரீதோऽபவத்ராஜா ஸ்ருத்வா து த்விஜபாஷிதம் ।
அமாத்யாம்ஸ்சாப்ரவீத்ராஜா ஹர்ஷேணேதம் ஸுபாக்ஷரம் ॥
tataḥ prītō'bhavadrājā ṡrutvā tu dvijabhāṣitam ।
amātyāṃṡcābravīdrājā harṣēṇēdaṃ ṡubhākṣaram ॥
The king was happy hearing the words of Brāhmaṇas
and said these auspicious words to the ministers:
1.12.14
குரூணாம் வசநாச்சீக்ரம் ஸம்பாரா: ஸம்ப்ரியந்து மே ।
ஸமர்தாதிஷ்டிதஸ்சாஸ்வஸ்ஸோபாத்யாயோ விமுச்யதாம் ॥
gurūṇāṃ vacanācchīghraṃ sambhārāḥ sambhriyantu mē ।
samarthādhiṣṭhitaṡcāṡvassōpādhyāyō vimucyatām ॥
"Let all the preparations be made according
to the instructions of our Gurus.
Let the horse be released guarded by able warriors
and followed by teachers of Ṡāstras."
1.12.15
ஸரய்வாஸ்சோத்தரே தீரே யஜ்ஞபூமிர்விதீயதாம் ।
ஸாந்தயஸ்சாபிவர்த்தந்தாம் யதாகல்பம் யதாவிதி ॥
sarayvāṡcōttarē tīrē yajñabhūmirvidhīyatām ।
ṡāntayaṡcābhivarddhantāṃ yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi ॥
"Let the ground be prepared on the
northern banks of river Sarayu for performing the Yāga.
Let invocations be made for peace
as per the traditions and Ṡāstras."
1.12.16
ஸக்ய: கர்துமயம் யஜ்ஞ: ஸர்வேணாபி மஹீக்ஷிதா ।
நாபராதோ பவேத்கஷ்டோ யத்யஸ்மிந் க்ரதுஸத்தமே ॥
ṡakyaḥ kartumayaṃ yajñaḥ sarvēṇāpi mahīkṣitā ।
nāparādhō bhavētkaṣṭō yadyasmin kratusattamē ॥
"This Yāga, one among the best,
is very demanding and difficult to
perform through to the end, without mistakes.
If it were easy, every other king would have performed it."
1.12.17
சித்ரம் ஹி ம்ருகயந்தேऽத்ர வித்வாம்ஸோ ப்ரஹ்மராக்ஷஸா: ।
விக்நிதஸ்ய ஹி யஜ்ஞஸ்ய ஸத்ய: கர்தா விநஸ்யதி ॥
chidraṃ hi mṛgayantē'tra vidvāṃsō brahmarākṣasāḥ ।
vighnitasya hi yajñasya sadyaḥ kartā vinaṡyati ॥
"The learned as well as the Brahma Rākshasas
will only be eager to find
violations in the performance.
A failed Yāga will also
take down the performer, for certain."
1.12.18
தத்யதா விதிபூர்வம் மே க்ரதுரேஷ ஸமாப்யதே ।
ததா விதாநம் க்ரியதாம் ஸமர்தா: கரணேஷ்விஹ ॥
tadyathā vidhipūrvaṃ mē kraturēṣa samāpyatē ।
tathā vidhānaṃ kriyatāṃ samarthāḥ karaṇēṣviha ॥
"Hence, you, the able souls,
please plan on ensuring that
the Yāga is performed to the end
strictly in accordance with the
rules and procedures laid out in the Ṡāstras."
1.12.19
ததேதி ச தத: ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிண: ப்ரத்யபூஜயந் ।
பார்திவேந்த்ரஸ்ய தத்வாக்யம் யதாஜ்ஞப்தமகுர்வத ॥
tathēti ca tataḥ sarvē mantriṇaḥ pratyapūjayan ।
pārthivēndrasya tadvākyaṃ yathājñaptamakurvata ॥
The ministers appreciated the words of the king
and did accordingly, as had been directed.
1.12.20
ததோ த்விஜாஸ்தே தர்மஜ்ஞமஸ்துவந் பார்திவர்ஷபம் ।
அநுஜ்ஞாதாஸ்தத: ஸர்வே புநர்ஜக்முர்யதாகதம் ॥
tatō dvijāstē dharmajñamastuvan pārthivarṣabham ।
anujñātāstataḥ sarvē punarjagmuryathāgatam ॥
Brāhmaṇas, then, praised the king, the savant of Dharma,
and took proper leave and left.
1.12.21
கதேஷ்வத த்விஜாக்ர்யேஷு மந்த்ரிணஸ்தாந்நராதிப: ।
விஸர்ஜ்ஜயித்வா ஸ்வம் வேஸ்ம ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாத்யுதி: ॥
gatēṣvatha dvijāgryēṣu mantriṇastānnarādhipaḥ ।
visarjjayitvā svaṃ vēṡma pravivēṡa mahādyutiḥ ॥
After the best of those Brāhmaṇas left,
the radiant king dismissed the assembly of ministers
and went to his residence.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே த்வாதஸ: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē dvādaṡaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twelfth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 411 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
