Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 78
In this Sarga, hearing that Kumbha and Nikumbha were slain, Rāvaṇa becomes sad and angry and sends Makarāksha, son of Khara, to fight with Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and the Vānaras. Makarāksha, who thinks very highly of his own prowess, excited at the prospect of a fight, proceeds, ignoring the bad omens that arise as he sets out.

Rāvaṇa blazed like fire in extreme rage.

destroy Rāghava, Lakshmaṇa and those Vānaras.

Hearing those words of Rāvaṇa,
the Night-Rover Makarāksha, son of Khara,
who thought highly of his own prowess,
was very excited and said, 'for sure!'

circumambulating him in reverence,
the strong one started from that splendid house,
as ordered by Rāvaṇa.

Then the son of Khara said these words
to the commander of the forces who stood near by,
'Please bring a chariot immediately,
and call for the army!'

Hearing those words of his, the Night-Rover
who was the commander of the forces,
brought near him a chariot and the army.

The Night-Rover circumambulted the chariot,
got into it, and instructed the charioteer
to drive it immediately.

ahaṃ rākṣasarājēna
rāvaṇēna mahātmanā ।
ājñaptaḥ samarē hantum
tāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
All of you, O Rākshasas,
shall now fight under my command.
I have been ordered by
Mahātma Rāvaṇa, the king of Rākshasas,
to kill those two, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa in the battle.

and strike it down with spears.

All of them, who looked terrifying
with their sharp fangs, yellow-tinged eyes
and disheveled hair, shouted
like the trumpeting of elephants.

shaking the earth with their tread.

the blare of conch-shells,
the beating of thousands of kettle drums,
the vaunting battle-cries and
the slapping of shoulders.

Then all of a sudden, the whip slipped
from the hand of the Rākshasa’s charioteer
and the flagstaff (of his chariot) tumbled down.

caraṇairākulairgatvā
dīnāḥ sāsramukhā yayuḥ ॥
The tread of the horses yoked to the chariot faltered.
Their faces were woebegone, eyes teary,
and they were devoid of their sprightly stride.

A terribly hideous wind, full of dust, blew
as the wicked and enraged Makarāksha set out.

The Rākshasas of great valor
ignored those bad omens that they saw,
and proceeded to the place where
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were.

Those Night-Rovers, dark as
clouds, elephants and buffaloes,
veterans of war with plenty of scars
from the strikes of maces and swords
in many a high-pitched battle in the past,
advanced, shouting, ‘I first! No, I!’

They of huge bodies gathered around
the son of Khara of gigantic body
and marched forth in excitement,
shaking the earth with their tread.

There arose a mighty din from
the blare of conch-shells,
the beating of thousands of kettle drums,
the vaunting battle-cries and
the slapping of shoulders.

dhvajastasya ca rakṣasaḥ ॥
Then all of a sudden, the whip slipped
from the hand of the Rākshasa’s charioteer
and the flagstaff (of his chariot) tumbled down.

caraṇairākulairgatvā
dīnāḥ sāsramukhā yayuḥ ॥
The tread of the horses yoked to the chariot faltered.
Their faces were woebegone, eyes teary,
and they were devoid of their sprightly stride.

sapāṃsuḥ kharadāruṇaḥ ।
niryāṇē tasya raudrasya
makarākṣasya durmatēḥ ॥
A terribly hideous wind, full of dust, blew
as the wicked and enraged Makarāksha set out.

rākṣasā vīryavattamāḥ ।
acintya nirgatāḥ sarvē
yatra tau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
The Rākshasas of great valor
ignored those bad omens that they saw,
and proceeded to the place where
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were.

ஸமரமுகேஷ்வஸக்ருத்கதாஸிபிந்நா: ।

ghanagajamahiṣāṅgatulyavarṇāḥ
samaramukhēṣvasakṛdgadāsibhinnāḥ ।
ahamahamiti yuddhakauṡalāstē
rajanicarāḥ paritaḥ samunnadantaḥ ॥
Those Night-Rovers, dark as
clouds, elephants and buffaloes,
veterans of war with plenty of scars
from the strikes of maces and swords
in many a high-pitched battle in the past,
advanced, shouting, ‘I first! No, I!’
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே அஷ்டஸப்ததிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē aṣṭasaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ॥

in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
