Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 66
In this Sarga, on seeing the fierce Kumbhakarṇa, the Vānaras and their chiefs flee. Aṅgada tells them that it is only a huge scarecrow set up by the Rākshasas and goads them to destroy it. They get together and hurl trees and rocks at him, which fall to the ground, smashed and broken, on touching him.
Kumbhakarṇa pulverizes the Vānara army and lets out a thunderous roar. The Vānaras flee again and hide wherever they can find shelter, in the trenches, in the caves, up on the mountains and underneath the water. With quite an effort, Aṅgada then brings them back again to fight, appealing to their valor, reason and allaying their fears.

Kumbhakarṇa of immense strength,
lofty like a mountain peak,
came out of the city swiftly,
jumping over the ramparts.

He uttered a mighty shout that
reverberated in the ocean,
seemed to out do lightning-bolts
and blow away the mountains.

யமேந வருணேந வா ।
ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய பீமாக்ஷமாயாந்தம்

The Vānaras fled on seeing him
of the frightful eyes come,
who was immune from death at the hands of
even Indra, Yama and Varuṇa.

Seeing them flee, Aṅgada, the prince,
addressed Nala, Neela, Gavāksha and
Kumuda, of immense strength:

வீர்யாண்யபிஜநாநி ச ।

Where are you going,
frightened like some ordinary Vānaras,
forgetting your valor, your noble ancestry, and all?

கிம் ப்ராணாந் பரிரக்ஷத ।

For heaven’s sake come back, my friends,
for what purpose are you trying to save your lives?
This Rākshasa is not capable of fighting,
for it is a just a huge scarecrow.

Come back, O Vānaras!
We will, with your prowess, destroy
this huge scarecrow set up by the Rākshasas!

ஸங்கம்ய ச ததஸ்தத: ।

Calming themselves with great effort,
the Vānaras gathered in knots here and there,
grabbed trees, and headed to the battlefield.

கும்பகர்ணம் வநௌகஸ: ।
நிஜக்நு: பரமக்ருத்தா:

Returning thus with all urgency,
the Vana dwellers struck Kumbhakarṇa
with all the fury of elephants in rut.

Though struck by tall peaks,
rocks and trees in flower,
he of immense strength
was not shaken even a bit.

பித்யந்தே ஸதஸ: ஸிலா: ।

Striking his body,
the rocks, shivered into hundreds of pieces,
and the trees in flower, broken,
fell on the ground.

வாநராணாம் மஹௌஜஸாம் ।

Outraged and putting forth all his strength,
he pounded the army of
those extremely powerful Vānaras
as a raging fire consumes the forest.

ஸேரதே வாநரர்ஷபா: ।
நிரஸ்தா: பதிதா பூமௌ

Many bulls among Vānaras, shoved (by him)
fell on the ground, their bodies wet with blood,
like trees that bore red flowers.

வாநரா நாவலோகயந் ।
கேசித்ஸமுத்ரே பதிதா:

The Vānaras, leaped and ran without looking back,
some falling into the sea and some flying into the sky.

ராக்ஷஸேந ச லீலயா ।
ஸாகரம் யேந தே தீர்ணா:

Attacked by the Rākshasa
for whom it was child's play,
those Veeras fled along the same track
by which they had crossed the ocean.

விஷண்ணவதநா பயாத் ।
ருக்ஷா வ்ருக்ஷாந் ஸமாரூடா:

Some ducked in low lying trenches
their faces miserable with fear,
and some got up on the mountains and
the bears climbed up the trees.

குஹா: கேசித்ஸமாஸ்ரிதா: ।

கேசித்பூமௌ நிபதிதா:
கேசித்ஸுப்தா ம்ருதா இவ ॥
Some hid under the ocean's water,
and some took refuge in caves.
Some fled and some could not even stand steady.
Some fell on the ground and some pretended to be dead.

வாநராநிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
Looking at those Vānaras whose morale was broken,
Aṅgada said these words:

நிவர்தத்வம் ப்லவங்கமா: ।

ஸ்தாநம் ஸர்வே நிவர்தத்வம்
கிம் ப்ராணாந் பரிரக்ஷத ॥
Come back, O Vānaras! Take a stand, and let us fight!
I do not see you, defeated as you are,
finding a shelter no matter
where you go on this earth.
For what purpose are you trying to
save your lives, please turn back!

அஸங்ககதிபௌருஷா: ।
தாரா ஹ்யபஹஸிஷ்யந்தி

O you, whose valor and prowess knows no check!
Your wives will sneer at you
if you flee, giving up your arms!
That is nothing but death for one who
has thus far led an honorable life!

அநார்யா: கலு யத்பீதா:
த்யக்த்வா வீர்யம் ப்ரதாவத ॥
You are all born into noble,
extensive and reputed families.
Where will you go (and hide),
scared like ordinary Vānaras?
By giving up your (natural) valor
and running out of fear, you become ignoble!

ததா வை ஜநஸம்ஸதி ।
தாநி வ: க்வ நு யாதாநி

Where did all those out-sized boasts
that you so fervently made in the
midst of gatherings of people go?

யஸ்து ஜீவிதி திக்க்ருத: ।
மார்க: ஸத்புருஷைர்ஜுஷ்ட:
ஸேவ்யதாம் த்யஜ்யதாம் பயம் ॥
Cowards who hang on to life even after being shamed,
will hear only scorn and contempt.
Please get over your fear and
take the path taken by honorable men.

ப்ருதிவ்யாமல்பஜீவிதா: ।
ப்ராப்நுயாமோ ப்ரஹ்மலோகம்

We will fall on the ground, slain,
if we are bestowed with only a short life;
but we will ascend to the world of Brahma,
which no coward can ever hope to.

நிஹத்வா ஸத்ருமாஹவே ।
நிஹதா வீரலோகஸ்ய

O Vānaras! If we slay the foe,
we will enjoy fame in this world!
Or if we are slain, we will
enjoy the privileges reserved
for the Veeras in the afterworld.

த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஜீவந் கமிஷ்யதி ।

Kumbhakarṇa is not going to escape alive
once he happens to come in the presence of Kākutstha,
any more than the moth that comes near a blazing fire.

ப்ராணாந் ரக்ஷாமஹே வயம் ।
ஏகேந பஹவோ பக்நா

If we run away from what we are supposed to do,
we might save our lives, but
with so many of us defeated by just one,
our reputation will be completely ruined.

அங்கதம் கநகாங்கதம் ।

When the heroic Aṅgada of the golden
shoulder-rings rebuked them thus,
they, who had taken to their heels,
answered him in words that
any man of prowess would sneer at:

கும்பகர்ணேந ரக்ஷஸா ।
ந ஸ்தாநகாலோ கச்சாமோ

We have fought a fierce battle
with the Rākshasa Kumbhakarṇa.
This is not a time to make a stand;
our lives are dear to us and we must go.

ஸர்வே தே பேஜிரே திஸ: ।
பீமம் மீமாக்ஷமாயாந்தம்

Saying this the Vānara chiefs
scattered in all directions
finding that the formidable foe with
frightful eyes was bearing down upon them.

அங்கதேந வலீமுகா: ।
ஸாந்த்வைஸ்சைவாநுமாநைஸ்ச

But finally, all those fleeing,
but nonetheless valorous, Vānaras
were brought back through
pleading and reasoning by Aṅgada.

வாலிபுத்ரேண தீமதா ।

With cheer brought back to them
by the sagacious son of Vāli,
all the Vānara chiefs stood ready,
waiting for orders (from him).

குமுதஸுஷேணகவாக்ஷரம்பதாரா: ।
த்விவிதபநஸவாயுபுத்ரமுக்யா:
த்வரிததராபிமுகம் ரணம் ப்ரயாதா: ॥
Then chiefs like Ṛshabha, Ṡarabha, Mainda,
Dhūmra, Neela, Kumuda, Sushēṇa, Gavāksha,
Rambha, Tāra, Dwivida, Panasa and the son of Vāyu,
proceeded towards the scene of battle, in all the haste.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஷட்ஷஷ்டிதம: ஸர்க:॥
Thus concludes the sixty sixth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
