Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 61
In this Sarga, Rāma asks Vibheeshaṇa about Kumbhakarṇa. Vibheeshaṇa tells him that he is the son of Viṡravasu, that he defeated even Vaivaswata and Vāsava and that no other Rākshasa equals him in height or size.
Vibheeshaṇa also tells that Kumbhakarṇa's strength was innate and not gained by boons and that he was extremely hungry right from his birth and used to devour all creatures. He also tells how people went to Indra seeking refuge, and how Indra's Vajra had no impact on Kumbhakarṇa, and how everyone then went to Brahma, and how Brahma cursed Kumbhakarṇa to sleep for six months and be awake only for one day to satiate his hunger.
Vibheeshaṇa suggests to Rāma that the Vānaras be told that it is just a huge machine, trusting which they will get over their fear of Kumbhakarṇa. Rāma then instructs Neela to arrange the army in battle formation armed with trees and boulders, and to take control of the gateways, roads and bridges of Laṅkā, and Neela does accordingly.

On seeing the foremost of the Rākshasas,
whose body was adorned with gold armlets,
mountainous in size and black as a rain-cloud,
and seeming to cover the entire sky
like Lord Nārāyaṇa did a long time ago,
the great Vānara army panicked
again and took to flight.

There is no other Rākshasa known
to be equal to him in height or size.

and crooked eyes with trident in the hand,
to be Time, the ultimate destroyer,

is innate to him, unlike other Rākshasa chiefs'
that come from the boons granted to them.

gobbled up by this mighty one who
has been extremely hungry, right from his birth.

the people, extremely terrified, went to
Ṡakra seeking refuge and told him about it.

Mahēndra, the wielder of Vajra,
became angry and struck Kumbhakarṇa with Vajra.
Struck by the Vajra of Ṡakra
the mighty one, shaken, roared in anger.

As the Rākshasa Kumbhakarṇa roared thus,
the terrified people became even more terrified,
hearing that roar.

in his wrath, pulled out a tusk of Airāvata,
and struck Vāsava on the chest with it.

Oppressed by the blow of Kumbhakarṇa,
Vāsava burned with pain and at once
Brahmarshis, Dēvas and Dānavas
were taken over by grief.
Then Ṡakra, along with the people,
went to the abode of the Self-born.

And they told the Great Progenitor
about Kumbhakarṇa’s wickedness,
how he devoured people,
how he intimidated the Dēvas,
how he destroyed the Āṡramas and
how he abducted all the women.

பக்ஷயிஷ்யதி நித்யஸ: ।
அசிரேணைவ காலேந

If he goes on gobbling up
creatures like this all the time,
the world will become empty very soon.

Hearing what Vāsava said,
the Grandsire of all the Worlds
sent for the Rākshasa,
and saw Kumbhakarṇa for himself.

felt a tremor seeing Kumbhakarṇa.
Steadying himself, the Self-born
said these words to Kumbhakarṇa:

பௌலஸ்த்யேநாஸி நிர்மித: ।
தஸ்மாத்த்வமத்யப்ரப்ருதி

Surely, Paulastya has begotten you
for the destruction of the world.
Therefore, you shall from now on
sleep like a dead man.

நிபபாதாக்ரத: ப்ரபோ: ।

Struck by Brahma’s curse,
he collapsed right in front of that Lord.
Then, greatly agitated,
Rāvaṇa said these words:

பலகாலே நிக்ருத்யதே ।
ந நப்தாரம் ஸ்வகம் ந்யாய்யம்

This tree of gold, which has grown so well,
is being cut down now, when starting to bear fruit.
It is not right to curse your great grandson
in this manner, O Lord of the worlds!

ஸ்வப்ஸ்யத்யேஷ ந ஸம்ஸய: ।

Your word shall not go waste
and he shall fall sleep,
but there should be a schedule set
according to which he sleeps and wakes up.

ஸ்வயம்பூரிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
Hearing those words of Rāvaṇa,
the Self-Born said these words:

6.61.29 ஊ ஸயதி ஹ்யேஷ ஷண்மாஸாந்
ஏகாஹம் ஜாகரிஷ்யதி ।

சரந் பூமிம் புபுக்ஷித: ।
வ்யாத்தாஸ்யோ பக்ஷயேல்லோகாந்
ஸக்ருத்த இவ பாவக: ॥
He shall sleep for six months
and then shall be awake for one day.
In that one day, this valorous one
will go around the earth
with his mouth wide open,
to satiate his hunger devouring
the worlds, like a raging fire.

கும்பகர்ணமபோதயத் ।

Hence, now that Rāvaṇa, the king
is frightened by your prowess,
and is clearly in danger,
he has Kumbhakarṇa awakened.

ஸிபிராத்பீமவிக்ரம: ।

has set out from his camp.
The valiant one will go on rampage,
devouring the Vānaras in wrath.

The Vānaras are fleeing now
at the mere sight of Kumbhakarṇa.
How will the Vānaras stand up to
the enraged one in battle?

யந்த்ரமேதத் ஸமுச்ச்ரிதம் ।
இதி விஜ்ஞாய ஹரயோ

Let all the Vānaras be told
that this is a mere machine built to be so tall.
Trusting it to be true, the Vānaras
will then be free from fear.

which were reasonable and meant for
motivating (the Vānaras), Rāghava
said these words to Neela, the Commander-in-Chief:

Go and get the entire army into
battle-formation, O son of the Fire-god, and take
control of the gateways, roads and bridges of Laṅkā.

Gather mountain crests, trees and rocks;
let all the Vānaras stand ready
with boulders in their hands.

Neela, the Commander-in-Chief,
an elephant among Vānaras
issued orders to the Vānara forces accordingly.

and Aṅgada, who were like mountains,
armed themselves with mountain crests
and beset the gateways.

the valiant Vānaras harried the
enemy forces, striking them with trees.

That fierce Vānara army, with
rocks and trees held high in their hands,
shone ominous like a bank of huge clouds
hovering near a mountain.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகஷஷ்டிதம: ஸர்க:॥
Thus concludes the sixty first Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
