Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 52
In this Sarga, a tumultuous, gargantuan and fierce fight ensues between Vānaras and Rākshasas led by Dhūmrāksha. Vānaras pound Rākshasas with trees and rocks. Rākshasas tear apart Vānaras with arrows and spears. Seeing Rākshasas flee the battle, Dhūmrāksha comes down heavily on the Vānara force. Seeing the Vānara army struggle under the assault of Dhūmrāksha, Hanumān smashes his chariot with a huge rock and him with a huge tree. Dhūmrāksha collapses and the Rākshasas, fleeing, retreat into Laṅka.

vānarai rākṣasāṡcāpi
drumairbhūmau samīkṛtāḥ ॥
The Vānaras were torn apart on all sides
by fierce Rākshasa bands with deadly
iron bars and tridents of various kinds.
And the Vānaras leveled the
Rākshasas to the ground with trees.

with sharp and fierce arrows,
that flew straight to the target
propelled by the Kaṅka feathers.

When their bodies were torn by the fierce maces,
Paṭṭisas and Kūta-Mudgaras of the Rākshasas,
the Vānaras of immense strength,
with their wrath firing up their enthusiasm,
went about their business as if they knew no fear.

jagṛhustē drumāṃstatra
ṡilāṡca hariyūthapāḥ ।
tē bhīmavēgā harayō
nardamānāstatastataḥ ।
mamanthū rākṣasān bhīmān
nāmāni ca babhāṣirē ॥
With their limbs torn by arrows
and bodies pierced by spears,
the Vānara warriors of terrific speed
everywhere snatched trees and rocks
and shouting stridently proclaiming their names,
they pounded the fierce Rākshasas.

vavamū rudhiraṃ kēcit

pārṡvēṣu dāritāḥ kēcit
kēcidrāṡīkṛtā drumaiḥ ।
ṡilābhiṡcūrṇitāḥ kēcit
kēciddantairvidāritāḥ ॥
Holding their breath tight,
the Vānaras pounded the Rākshasas.
Some of them, who fed on blood, vomited gore.
Some had their flanks gashed,
some were reduced to a shapeless
mass battered by trees,
some were pulverized by rocks,
and some were torn by teeth.

The grounds were littered with
chariots that were destroyed,
flagstaffs that were smashed and broken,
donkeys that were struck down,
Night-rovers that were felled,
mighty elephants that resembled mountains,
and horses that were squashed
by the Vānaras with mountain crests.

rākṣasāḥ karajaistīkṣṇaiḥ
mukhēṣu vinikartitāḥ ।
vivarṇavadanā bhūyō
viprakīrṇaṡirōruhāḥ ।
mūḍhāḥ ṡōṇitagandhēna
nipēturdharaṇītalē ॥
Vānaras fierce in their attack
jumped on Rākshasas again and again and
with sharp nails clawed their faces.
The Rākshasas fell on the ground
fainting under the overwhelming smell of blood,
their faces turning pale and their hair disheveled.

rākṣasā bhīmanisvanāḥ ।

vajrasparṡasamairharīn ॥
Some Rākshasas rushed upon the Vānaras
in a frenzy of fury with frightful yells,
attacking them with their open palms,
which fell with the force of the thunderbolt.

muṣṭibhiṡcaraṇairdantaiḥ

As they swooped down on them swiftly,
the Vānaras, who were even more swift,
smashed them with their clenched fists,
their feet, their nails and trees.

க்ரோதேந கதநம் சக்ரே
வாநராணாம் யுயுத்ஸதாம் ॥

rākṣasā vipradudruvuḥ ।
sainyaṃ tu vidrutaṃ dṛṣṭvā
dhūmrākṣō rākṣasarṣabhaḥ ।
krōdhēna kadanaṃ cakrē
vānarāṇāṃ yuyutsatām ॥
Beaten up by the Vānaras, the Rākshasas fled.
Seeing his army fleeing,
Dhūmrāksha, a bull among Rākshasas,
in his rage, caused great havoc
on the Vānaras who were intent on fighting.

mudgarairāhatāḥ kēcit
patitā dharaṇītalē ॥
Some Vānaras were pounded with Prāsas
and blood poured out of them.
Some fell on the ground
struck with Mudgaras.

paṭṭiṡairāhatāḥ kēcit
vihvalantō gatāsavaḥ ॥
Some were beaten up with Parighas,
some were torn up by Bhindipālas and
some fell dead whirling, hit by Paṭṭisas.

nipēturdharaṇītalē ॥
Vānaras fierce in their attack
jumped on Rākshasas again and again and
with sharp nails clawed their faces.
The Rākshasas fell on the ground
fainting under the overwhelming smell of blood,
their faces turning pale and their hair disheveled.

ராக்ஷஸா பீமநிஸ்வநா: ।
தலைரேவாபிதாவந்தி
வஜ்ரஸ்பர்ஸஸமைர்ஹரீந் ॥
anyē paramasaṅkruddhā
rākṣasā bhīmanisvanāḥ ।
talairēvābhidhāvanti
vajrasparṡasamairharīn ॥
Some Rākshasas rushed upon the Vānaras
in a frenzy of fury with frightful yells,
attacking them with their open palms,
which fell with the force of the thunderbolt.

வாநரைராபதந்தஸ்தே
வேகிதா வேகவத்தரை: ।
முஷ்டிபிஸ்சரணைர்தந்தை:
பாதபைஸ்சாவபோதிதா: ॥
vānarairāpatantastē
vēgitā vēgavattaraiḥ ।
muṣṭibhiṡcaraṇairdantaiḥ
pādapaiṡcāvapōthitāḥ ॥
As they swooped down on them swiftly,
the Vānaras, who were even more swift,
smashed them with their clenched fists,
their feet, their nails and trees.

வாநரைர்ஹந்யமாநாஸ்தே
ராக்ஷஸா விப்ரதுத்ருவு: ।
ஸைந்யம் து வித்ருதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
தூம்ராக்ஷோ ராக்ஷஸர்ஷப: ।
க்ரோதேந கதநம் சக்ரே
வாநராணாம் யுயுத்ஸதாம் ॥
vānarairhanyamānāstē
rākṣasā vipradudruvuḥ ।
sainyaṃ tu vidrutaṃ dṛṣṭvā
dhūmrākṣō rākṣasarṣabhaḥ ।
krōdhēna kadanaṃ cakrē
vānarāṇāṃ yuyutsatām ॥
Beaten up by the Vānaras, the Rākshasas fled.
Seeing his army fleeing,
Dhūmrāksha, a bull among Rākshasas,
in his rage, caused great havoc
on the Vānaras who were intent on fighting.

ப்ராஸை: ப்ரமதிதா: கேசித்
வாநரா: ஸோணிதஸ்ரவா: ।
முத்கரைராஹதா: கேசித்
பதிதா தரணீதலே ॥
prāsaiḥ pramathitāḥ kēcit
vānarāḥ ṡōṇitasravāḥ ।
mudgarairāhatāḥ kēcit
patitā dharaṇītalē ॥
Some Vānaras were pounded with Prāsas
and blood poured out of them.
Some fell on the ground
struck with Mudgaras.

பரிகைர்மதிதா: கேசித்
பிந்திபாலைர்விதாரிதா: ।
பட்டிஸைராஹதா: கேசித்
விஹ்வலந்தோ கதாஸவ: ॥
parighairmathitāḥ kēcit
bhindipālairvidāritāḥ ।
paṭṭiṡairāhatāḥ kēcit
vihvalantō gatāsavaḥ ॥
Some were beaten up with Parighas,
some were torn up by Bhindipālas and
some fell dead whirling, hit by Paṭṭisas.

கேசித்விநிஹதா: ஸூலை
ருதிரார்த்ரா வநௌகஸ: ।
கேசித்வித்ராவிதா நஷ்டா:
ஸபலை ராக்ஷஸைர்யுதி ॥
kēcidvinihatāḥ ṡūlai
rudhirārdrā vanaukasaḥ ।
kēcidvidrāvitā naṣṭāḥ
sabalai rākṣasairyudhi ॥
Some Vana-dwellers, struck by spears
were drenched with blood.
Some were lost without a trace,
chased by the strong Rākshasas.
