நிஹதௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
adṛṡyamānēna raṇē
māyayā vāsavōpamau ।
mama nāthāvanāthāyā
nihatau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, who were comparable to Indra,
have been slain by the use of trickery
and by making oneself invisible in the battle-field.
My protectors leave me now unprotected.

For no enemy, even if he were as swift as the mind,
could escape alive once fallen into the
line of sight of Rāghava in the battle-field.

Death is invincible and nothing
seems to be too heavy for Time to bear,
from the fact that Rāma, along with his brother,
lies slain in battle.

I do not grieve for myself,
for Rāma, for Lakshmaṇa of immense strength,
or for my own mother so much as I do
for my long-suffering mother-in-law.
