And coming down, Rāghava, the Dharmātma,
beheld his own forces which
no foe could hope to assail.

Rāghava, who had a great sense of timing,
gave the signal for the battle at the right time.

armed with the bow, at the head of his huge army.

Jāmbavān, the King of the bears,
Neela and Lakshmaṇa, all followed him.

covering a vast area of the earth.

and matured (huge) trees for repulsing the foe.

subduers of the foe, reached Laṅkā, the city of Rāvaṇa.

patākamālinīṃ ramyām
udyānavanaṡōbhitām ।
citravaprāṃ suduṣprāpām
uccaiḥ prākāratōraṇām ।
tāṃ surairapi durdharṣām
rāmavākyapracōditāḥ ।
yathānivēṡaṃ sampīḍya
nyaviṡanta vanaukasaḥ ॥
The Vana dwellers, spurred by Rāma’s command,
gave a jolt to the city that was beautiful
with its festoons of banners and buntings,
its gardens and woods, its splendid ramparts and lofty gates,
and was impregnable even to the gods,
entering it and taking positions as planned.

The valorous Rāma, son of Daṡaratha,
attended by Lakshmaṇa, arrived at
the northern entrance of the city
that was protected by Rāvaṇa,
and established himself there,
since Rāvaṇa himself was entrenched there.

samarthaḥ parirakṣitum ।
rāvaṇādhiṣṭhitaṃ bhīmam
varuṇēnēva sāgaram ।
sāyudhai rākṣasairbhīmaiḥ
abhiguptaṃ samantataḥ ।
laghūnāṃ trāsajananam
pātālamiva dānavaiḥ ॥
For, none other than Rāma could effectively
block that entrance, which was formidable with
its defense being directed by Rāvaṇa
as the ocean is looked after by Varuṇa,
and guarded on all sides by powerful
armed forces of Rākshasas as the nether
world is by the Dānavas, striking terror
in the hearts of men of meager mettle.

and took position there.

Ṛshabha, Gavāksha, Gaja and Gavaya,
besieged the southern entrance.

charge of (blocking) the western entrance,
with the assistance of
Pramāthi, Praghasa and other Veeras.

at the central region, along with
all the great Vānara chiefs, who were
comparable to Garuda and Vāyu in speed.

Thirty six crores of renowned captains of the army
established themselves ready for attack,
at the same place where Sugreeva was.

stationed a crore of Vānaras at every entrance.

ஸுக்ரீவோ யத்ர வாநர: ॥
vānārāṇāṃ tu ṣaṭtriṃṡat
kōṭyaḥ prakhyātayūthapāḥ ।
nipīḍyōpaniviṣṭāṡca
sugrīvō yatra vānaraḥ ॥
Thirty six crores of renowned captains of the army
established themselves ready for attack,
at the same place where Sugreeva was.

த்வாரே த்வாரே ஹரீணாம் து

ṡāsanēna tu rāmasya
lakṣmaṇaḥ savibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
dvārē dvārē harīṇāṃ tu
kōṭiṃ kōṭiṃ nyavēṡayat ॥
Following the orders of Rāma,
Lakshmaṇa, assisted by Vibheeshaṇa,
stationed a crore of Vānaras at every entrance.
