Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 40
This Sarga, which starts with the repetition of some of the content in the previous Sargas and portrays the duel between Sugreeva and Rāvaṇa, is considered unauthentic. It is absurd that Sugreeva, the chief of the army, would jump impulsively at the enemy, without any strategy and consultation with his chiefs or Rāma, and that he would not face resistance from the forces of Rāvaṇa, before he reaches Rāvaṇa. This unauthentic episode continues till the tenth Ṡlōka of next Sarga. Nevertheless, the description of the duel in this Sarga is quite lively, impressive and makes quite an enjoyable reading.

and adorned with diamond ornaments.

Each one making the other
perspire all over the body,
each one making the other’s
body bedaubed in blood,
each one arresting the other’s
movement, seized in their hold,
one making the other look like a Ṡālmali tree
while the other made one look like the Kiṃṡuka tree,
the lord of Vānaras and the lord of Rākshasas,
both of immense strength,
fought with each other brutally,
pounding each other with their fists,
dealing out blows with their open palms,
jabbing with their elbows and
thrashing with their fingers.

Having fought a fierce duel for a long time
on the terrace of the tower,
each tossing up, dragging down and
bending the other’s body,
they could finally find a moment
to stand on their feet, on that terrace.

Squeezing tightly to crush each other’s body,
they tumbled down into the space
between the rampart and the moat.
Pushing each other, they then sprang up to the ground,
and remained for a while, panting for breath.
