The crest of that Trikūṭa was seconded by none;
it was so high that it seemed to touch the sky.
It seemed to be not reachable even for birds,
and no man could even think of climbing it, let alone do it.
It was so completely covered with
flowers, that it looked like gold.
It was clean, delicate, rich, huge, and
vast, occupying an area of a hundred Yōjanas.

On that crest was situated Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa.
Ten Yōjanas wide and twenty Yōjanas long,
that city shone with its lofty towers
which resembled white clouds,
and with ramparts made of gold and silver.

Laṅkā was extremely fabulous with
its palaces and towers shining
like clouds in the middle step of Vishṇu,
at the end of summer and onset of rainy season.
Vishṇu, in the form of Vāmana,
occupied the earth with his first step
and the sky with the second,
before he put the third on the head of Mahābali.
Hence the sky is known as middle step of Vishṇu.

Rāma, the magnificent elder brother of Lakshmaṇa,
along with the Vānaras, beheld that
opulent and charming city of Rāvaṇa that was
aplenty with gold, wealth and a variety of flowers,
its appeal enhanced by its pleasure gardens,
hills with variegated mineral tints,
cooing of various birds, teeming animal life,
and its numerous Rākshasa clans.
