The smoke that arises from the ritual fires
by the Ṛshis who are like fire themselves,
envelops the ten directions
dissipating the power of the Rākshasas.

gṛhītaṡca varastvayā ।
mānuṣā vānarā ṛkṣā
gōlāṅgūlā mahābalāḥ ।
balavanta ihāgamya
garjanti dṛḍhavikramāḥ ॥
You secured, as a boon, immunity from death
at the hands of the Dēvas, Dānavas and Yakshas.
But it is humans, Vānaras, bears and
cow-tailed baboons of great strength and
unshakable prowess that have come here, roaring.

The flags are dusty and faded and
do not shine as they used to.

pratyādityaṃ rudanti ca ।
karālō vikaṭō muṇḍaḥ
paruṣaḥ kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ ।
kālō gṛhāṇi sarvēṣām
kālē kālē'nvavēkṣatē ॥
All the birds and beasts turn to the sun and wail.
Death, ugly, harsh and frightening,
with his clean-shaven head and smoky-red complexion
casts his eye at every house, time and again.

jñātvā pradhārya kāryāṇi

Keeping in mind these and other
baleful portents that are seen everywhere,
you should think carefully
and do what is better for the future.

பரீக்ஷ்ய ரக்ஷோதிபதேர்மந: புந: ।

பபூவ தூஷ்ணீம் ஸமவேக்ஷ்ய ராவணம் ॥
idaṃ vacastatra nigadya mālyavān
parīkṣya rakṣōdhipatērmanaḥ punaḥ ।
anuttamēṣūttamapauruṣō balī
babhūva tūṣṇīṃ samavēkṣya rāvaṇam ॥
Having spoken thus, but again, sensing
what is on the mind of the lord of Rākshasas,
the strong Mālyavān, who was the foremost
among his unexcelled colleagues, stayed silent.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே பஞ்சத்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē pañcatriṃṡaḥ sargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fifth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
