Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 35
Rāvaṇa rebukes his ministers for doing nothing even after knowing about Rāma crossing the ocean and his army camping on its southern shore.
Then Mālyavān, his mother’s father and elderly statesman, best of his ministers, advises Rāvaṇa that he should give Seetā back and negotiate peace with such a formidable enemy as Rāma.
He puts forth at least four reasons why he should do so: one, that Dharma eventually wins over Adharma; two, that all the Ṛshis whom he harassed wish for the success of Rāma; three, that he has immunity from death from Dēvas, Dānavas and Yakshas, but not from humans, Vānaras and bears; and four, that evil omens are seen everywhere in Laṅkā.

a cruel one, harrier of the world,
greeted everyone and roared reprovingly,
the entire assembly hall reverberating.

after learning about Rāma’s prowess.

commands sovereign power for long years.

and commands great power.

is better off calling for peace.
Never should an enemy be insulted.
Confrontation makes sense only
when one clearly enjoys superior power.

and Adharma with Rākshasas, the Asuras.

it will be the age of Kṛta.
When Adharma overwhelms Dharma,
it is the age of Tishya (Kali).

You adopted Adharma and assaulted
the all important Dharma, wherever you went.
That is why the enemies (who adhere to Dharma)
are stronger than us.

vivardhayati pakṣaṃ ca

That Adharma which you strengthened
by your heedlessness devours us now;
it works in favor of the Suras and
strengthens their side.

Indulged in the pursuit of pleasures,
you have behaved recklessly

greatly disquieting the Ṛshis who are
(brilliant, pure and powerful) like fire.

tapasā bhāvitātmānō
dharmasyānugrahē ratāḥ ॥
None can stand against their
(yogic) power that blazes like fire.
With their minds purified by Tapa
they are devoted to the strengthening of Dharma.

mukhyairyajñairyajantyētē
nityaṃ taistairdvijātayaḥ ।
juhvatyagnīṃṡca vidhivat
vēdāṃṡcōccairadhīyatē ॥
Those Brāhmaṇas perform powerful Yajñas all the time.
They offer oblations into fire in a customary manner
chanting Vedas in full-throated voices.

அபிபூய ச ரக்ஷாம்ஸி
ப்ரஹ்மகோஷாநுதைரயந் ।

abhibhūya ca rakṣāṃsi
brahmaghōṣānudairayan ।
diṡō'pi vidrutāḥ sarvāḥ
stanayitnurivōṣṇagē ॥
The roar of their chants of Vēdas,
defying the (threats of) Rākshasas,
makes all the Rākshasas flee in every direction
like the clouds do in summer.

விவர்தயதி பக்ஷம் ச
ஸுராணாம் ஸுரபாவந: ॥
sa pramādādvivṛddhastē' -
dharmō'bhigrasatē hi naḥ ।
vivardhayati pakṣaṃ ca
surāṇāṃ surabhāvanaḥ ॥
That Adharma which you strengthened
by your heedlessness devours us now;
it works in favor of the Suras and
strengthens their side.

விஷயேஷு ப்ரஸக்தேந
யத்கிஞ்சித்காரிணா த்வயா ।
ருஷீணாமக்நிகல்பாநாம்
உத்வேகோ ஜநிதோ மஹாந் ॥
viṣayēṣu prasaktēna
yatkiñcitkāriṇā tvayā ।
ṛṣīṇāmagnikalpānām
udvēgō janitō mahān ॥
Indulged in the pursuit of pleasures,
you have behaved recklessly
doing whatever you pleased
greatly disquieting the Ṛshis who are
(brilliant, pure and powerful) like fire.

தேஷாம் ப்ரபாவோ துர்தர்ஷ:
ப்ரதீப்த இவ பாவக: ।
தபஸா பாவிதாத்மாநோ
தர்மஸ்யாநுக்ரஹே ரதா: ॥
tēṣāṃ prabhāvō durdharṣaḥ
pradīpta iva pāvakaḥ ।
tapasā bhāvitātmānō
dharmasyānugrahē ratāḥ ॥
None can stand against their
(yogic) power that blazes like fire.
With their minds purified by Tapa
they are devoted to the strengthening of Dharma.

முக்யைர்யஜ்ஞைர்யஜந்த்யேதே
நித்யம் தைஸ்தைர்த்விஜாதய: ।
ஜுஹ்வத்யக்நீம்ஸ்ச விதிவத்
வேதாம்ஸ்சோச்சைரதீயதே ॥
mukhyairyajñairyajantyētē
nityaṃ taistairdvijātayaḥ ।
juhvatyagnīṃṡca vidhivat
vēdāṃṡcōccairadhīyatē ॥
Those Brāhmaṇas perform powerful Yajñas all the time.
They offer oblations into fire in a customary manner
chanting Vedas in full-throated voices.

அபிபூய ச ரக்ஷாம்ஸி
ப்ரஹ்மகோஷாநுதைரயந் ।
திஸோऽபி வித்ருதா: ஸர்வா:
ஸ்தநயித்நுரிவோஷ்ணகே ॥
abhibhūya ca rakṣāṃsi
brahmaghōṣānudairayan ।
diṡō'pi vidrutāḥ sarvāḥ
stanayitnurivōṣṇagē ॥
The roar of their chants of Vēdas,
defying the (threats of) Rākshasas,
makes all the Rākshasas flee in every direction
like the clouds do in summer.
