krūrasya niṡcayaṃ tasya
rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ॥
Sit down in comfort and tell me
in detail about the intentions
of the cruel and wicked Rāvaṇa.

rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ ॥
Thus asked by Seetā, who was still shaking,
Saramā said everything that Rāvaṇa
and his ministers were discussing.

His mother and the elder minister Aviddha
have exhorted the King of the Rākshasas
strongly to release you, O Vaidēhee!

janasthānē yadadbhutam ॥
Give Maithili back to the
lord of men with all honor.
The astounding exploit at Janasthāna

(of what he is capable of doing).

kaḥ kuryānmānuṣō bhuvi ॥
Which mortal in this world can do what Hanumān did,
leaping over the ocean, finding (Seetā)
and killing the Rākshasas in battle?

arthamarthaparō yathā ॥
Though advised thus in many ways
by Aviddha and his mother,
he was unable to bring himself to give you up,
like a miser cannot, his wealth.

nōtsahatyamṛtō mōktum
yuddhē tvāmiti maithili ।
sāmātyasya nṛṡaṃsasya
niṡcayō hyēṣa vartatē ॥
He is not at all for giving you up,
O Maithili, until he is killed in the battle.
The cruel one and the ministers,
are resolute on staying the course.

ராக்ஷஸாநாம் ச ஸர்வேஷாம்
ஆத்மநஸ்ச வதேந ஹி ॥
tadēṣā niṡcitā buddhiḥ
mṛtyulōbhādupasthitā ।
bhayānna ṡaktastvāṃ mōktum
anirastastu saṃyugē ।
rākṣasānāṃ ca sarvēṣām
ātmanaṡca vadhēna hi ॥
He is courting death, and hence this resolve.
He cannot be frightened enough to release you,
it will happen only with the defeat in the battle,
destruction of all the Rākshasas and his own death.

Slaying Rāvaṇa with his sharp arrows in battle,
Rāma, by all means, will take you back
to Ayōdhyā, O you of dark eyes.

naṣṭaujasō dainyaparītacēṣṭāḥ
ṡrēyō na paṡyanti nṛpasya dōṣē ॥
On hearing that sound of the Vānara army,
the vitality of the retainers of the
Rākshasa King in Laṅkā was lost,
their movements betrayed low spirits and
they saw no hope for themselves
because of the offence committed by their king.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே சதுஸ்த்ரிம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
