Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 32
In this Sarga, Seetā laments and wails, believing the words of Rāvaṇa that Rāma is killed and the head of Rāma and his bow shown to her are real.
Meanwhile, Prahasta and all the ministers come to see him, and Rāvaṇa leaves the Aṡōka pleasance to give them audience. The fake head and bow disappear as soon as he leaves. Rāvaṇa orders the army chiefs to assemble the forces, which they do immediately.

ākhyātaṃ ca hanūmatā ।
nayanē mukhavarṇaṃ ca
bhartustatsadṛṡaṃ mukham ।
kēṡān kēṡāntadēṡaṃ ca
taṃ ca cūḍāmaṇiṃ ṡubham ।
ētaiḥ sarvairabhijñānaiḥ
abhijñāya suduḥkhitā ।
vijagarhē'tra kaikēyīm
kōṡantī kurarī yathā ॥
Seeing the head and the great bow,
remembering the compact with Sugreeva
that Hanuman had mentioned, and
noticing the resemblance of the eyes and
the complexion of the face to her husband’s,
and similarly the hair, the forehead
and the beautiful crest jewel,
and convinced by all those proofs,
Seetā plunged in grief, wailing like
a female osprey, cursing Kaikēyee.

tvayā kalahaṡīlayā ॥
You have your wish now, Kaikēyee;
the delight of his race is slain and
the entire family has been torn up by the roots
by you with your propensity for sowing discord.

clad in tree-bark along with me?

Saying this, the poor young and suffering
Vaidēhee fell down on the ground shaking
like a plantain tree that was axed.

pratilabhya ca cētanām ।
tacchiraḥ samupāsthāya
vilalāpāyatēkṣaṇā ॥
Recovering after a while
and coming to her senses and
drawing that head close to her,
she of wide eyes lamented:

gatāsmi vidhavā kṛtā ॥
Alas, I am undone, O you of mighty arm
who have been faithful to the hero’s vow!
With this final fate of yours
I am now reduced to a widow.

prathamaṃ maraṇaṃ nāryā
bharturvaiguṇyamucyatē ।
suvṛtta sādhuvṛttāyāḥ
saṃvṛttastvaṃ mamāgrataḥ ॥
It is said that the death of a husband
before that of his wife speaks of her evil conduct.
But O you of exemplary conduct!
You have died ahead of me in spite of my good conduct!

magnāyāḥ ṡōkasāgarē ।
yō hi māmudyatastrātum
sō'pi tvaṃ vinipātitaḥ ॥
As you made a great effort to save me
from drowning in an ocean of grief
hit by sorrow after sorrow,
you too were struck down.

vivatsā vatsalā kṛtā ॥
The doting Kousalyā, my mother-in-law,
is now bereft of her offspring, O Rāghava,
like a cow of its calf.

anṛtaṃ vacanaṃ tēṣām
alpāyurasi rāghava ॥
Those who prophesied long life for you
have been proved wrong,
O you of unimaginable prowess!
Your life has been all too short, Rāghava!

pacatyēnaṃ yathā kālō
bhūtānāṃ prabhavō hyayam ॥
You are wise and brilliant;
but even the wise man’s brilliance deserts him,
when Time that controls all creatures confounds him.

adṛṣṭaṃ mṛtyumāpannaḥ
kasmāttvaṃ nayaṡāstravit ।
vyasanānāmupāyajñaḥ
kuṡalō hyasi varjanē ॥
How could you have been
struck down by death, unseen,
when you were so accomplished in statecraft
and skilled in finding
expedients to thwart adversities?

raudrayā'tinṛṡaṃsayā ।
kālarātryā mamācchidya
hṛtaḥ kamalalōcana ॥
You are torn and dragged away from me,
O you of lotus eyes,
by that cruel night of destruction,
which took you into her strong embrace!

priyāmiva samāṡliṣya

O bull among men, O you of the mighty arm!
You lie hugging the earth
as if she were your beloved,
abandoning me to my suffering.

idaṃ tē matpriyaṃ vīra
dhanu kāñcanabhūṣaṇam ॥
This is that bow of yours adorned with gold,
which I loved so much, O valiant one!
You always made it a point to decorate it
with scents and flowers, with my help.

ṡvaṡurēṇa mamānagha ।
sarvaiṡca pitṛbhiḥ sārdham
nūnaṃ svargē samāgataḥ ॥
You certainly join, O sinless one,
Daṡaratha, your father and my father-in-law,
and all your ancestors in heaven.

திவி நக்ஷத்ரபூதஸ்த்வம்
மஹத்கர்மக்ருதாம் ப்ரியம் ।

divi nakṣatrabhūtastvam
mahatkarmakṛtāṃ priyam ।
puṇyaṃ rājarṣivaṃṡaṃ tvam
ātmanaḥ samavēkṣasē ॥
Having become a star in the sky,
the love of those who have done great deeds,
you will be able to see from your place
your own line of royal sages of exceeding merit.
In many cultures, there is this common notion that people who have done great deeds become stars adorning the sky. Hence, sky, in this Ṡlōka is referred to as the love of people who have done great deeds.

kiṃ māṃ na prēkṣasē rājan
kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣasē ।
bālāṃ bālēna samprāptām
bhāryāṃ māṃ sahacāriṇīm ॥
Why do you not look at me, O king,
why do you not speak to me,
your wife who walked with you,
the young one who joined
you when you too were young?

cariṣyāmīti yattvayā ।
smara tanmama kākutstha
naya māmapi duḥkhitām ॥
Remember, O scion of the Kākutsthas,
you promised, taking my hand (in marriage),
that you would be my constant companion!
Take me, the miserable one, too with you.

asmāllōkādamuṃ lōkam
tyaktvā māmapi duḥkhitām ॥
True, you are the foremost of those who aim high;
but why do you have to leave
me, the grieving one, behind
as you go from this world to the other world?

Your body that deserved the best unguents
and embraced by me alone will now
be dragged by the wildest of beasts.

agniṣṭōmādibhiryajñaiḥ
iṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ।
agnihōtrēṇa saṃskāram
kēna tvaṃ tu na lapsyasē ॥
You performed many Yajñas
like Agnishṭōma giving away ample gifts;
how could you not have your last rites
performed in a customary manner,
with fire-rituals?

trayāṇāmēkamāgatam ।
pariprakṣyati kausalyā
lakṣmaṇaṃ ṡōkalālasā ॥
Kousalyā, seeing Lakshmaṇa, only one
of the three who set out on exile, returning
will be consumed by grief.

have to convey about the slaying
of your allied forces and yourself
in the night by the Rākshasas.

அல்பாயுரஸி ராகவ ॥
ādiṣṭaṃ dīrghamāyustē
yairacintyaparākrama ।
anṛtaṃ vacanaṃ tēṣām
alpāyurasi rāghava ॥
Those who prophesied long life for you
have been proved wrong,
O you of unimaginable prowess!
Your life has been all too short, Rāghava!

prājñasyāpi satastava ।
pacatyēnaṃ yathā kālō
bhūtānāṃ prabhavō hyayam ॥
You are wise and brilliant;
but even the wise man’s brilliance deserts him,
when Time that controls all creatures confounds him.

அத்ருஷ்டம் ம்ருத்யுமாபந்ந:
கஸ்மாத்த்வம் நயஸாஸ்த்ரவித் ।

adṛṣṭaṃ mṛtyumāpannaḥ
kasmāttvaṃ nayaṡāstravit ।
vyasanānāmupāyajñaḥ
kuṡalō hyasi varjanē ॥
How could you have been
struck down by death, unseen,
when you were so accomplished in statecraft
and skilled in finding
expedients to thwart adversities?

ரௌத்ரயாऽதிந்ருஸம்ஸயா ।

tathā tvaṃ sampariṣvajya
raudrayā'tinṛṡaṃsayā ।
kālarātryā mamācchidya
hṛtaḥ kamalalōcana ॥
You are torn and dragged away from me,
O you of lotus eyes,
by that cruel night of destruction,
which took you into her strong embrace!

māṃ vihāya tapasvinīm ।
priyāmiva samāṡliṣya
pṛthivīṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥
O bull among men, O you of the mighty arm!
You lie hugging the earth
as if she were your beloved,
abandoning me to my suffering.

arcitaṃ satataṃ yattat
gandhamālyairmayā tava ।
idaṃ tē matpriyaṃ vīra
dhanu kāñcanabhūṣaṇam ॥
This is that bow of yours adorned with gold,
which I loved so much, O valiant one!
You always made it a point to decorate it
with scents and flowers, with my help.

ṡvaṡurēṇa mamānagha ।
sarvaiṡca pitṛbhiḥ sārdham
nūnaṃ svargē samāgataḥ ॥
You certainly join, O sinless one,
Daṡaratha, your father and my father-in-law,
and all your ancestors in heaven.

திவி நக்ஷத்ரபூதஸ்த்வம்
மஹத்கர்மக்ருதாம் ப்ரியம் ।
புண்யம் ராஜர்ஷிவம்ஸம் த்வம்
ஆத்மந: ஸமவேக்ஷஸே ॥
divi nakṣatrabhūtastvam
mahatkarmakṛtāṃ priyam ।
puṇyaṃ rājarṣivaṃṡaṃ tvam
ātmanaḥ samavēkṣasē ॥
Having become a star in the sky,
the love of those who have done great deeds,
you will be able to see from your place
your own line of royal sages of exceeding merit.
In many cultures, there is this common notion that people who have done great deeds become stars adorning the sky. Hence, sky, in this Ṡlōka is referred to as the love of people who have done great deeds.

kiṃ māṃ na prēkṣasē rājan
kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣasē ।
bālāṃ bālēna samprāptām
bhāryāṃ māṃ sahacāriṇīm ॥
Why do you not look at me, O king,
why do you not speak to me,
your wife who walked with you,
the young one who joined
you when you too were young?

ஸம்ஸ்ருதம் க்ருஹ்ணதா பாணிம்
சரிஷ்யாமீதி யத்த்வயா ।

saṃṡrutaṃ gṛhṇatā pāṇim
cariṣyāmīti yattvayā ।
smara tanmama kākutstha
naya māmapi duḥkhitām ॥
Remember, O scion of the Kākutsthas,
you promised, taking my hand (in marriage),
that you would be my constant companion!
Take me, the miserable one, too with you.

கஸ்மாந்மாமபஹாய த்வம்
கதோ கதிமதாம் வர ।
அஸ்மால்லோகாதமும் லோகம்

gatō gatimatāṃ vara ।
asmāllōkādamuṃ lōkam
tyaktvā māmapi duḥkhitām ॥
True, you are the foremost of those who aim high;
but why do you have to leave
me, the grieving one, behind
as you go from this world to the other world?

கல்யாணைருசிதம் காத்ரம்
பரிஷ்வக்தம் மயைவ து ।

pariṣvaktaṃ mayaiva tu ।
kravyādaistaccharīraṃ tē
nūnaṃ viparikṛṣyatē ॥
Your body that deserved the best unguents
and embraced by me alone will now
be dragged by the wildest of beasts.

அக்நிஷ்டோமாதிபிர்யஜ்ஞை:
இஷ்டவாநாப்ததக்ஷிணை: ।

agniṣṭōmādibhiryajñaiḥ
iṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ।
agnihōtrēṇa saṃskāram
kēna tvaṃ tu na lapsyasē ॥
You performed many Yajñas
like Agnishṭōma giving away ample gifts;
how could you not have your last rites
performed in a customary manner,
with fire-rituals?

ப்ரவ்ரஜ்யாமுபபந்நாநாம்
த்ரயாணாமேகமாகதம் ।
பரிப்ரக்ஷ்யதி கௌஸல்யா

pravrajyāmupapannānām
trayāṇāmēkamāgatam ।
pariprakṣyati kausalyā
lakṣmaṇaṃ ṡōkalālasā ॥
Kousalyā, seeing Lakshmaṇa, only one
of the three who set out on exile, returning
will be consumed by grief.

ஸ தஸ்யா: பரிப்ருச்சந்த்யா
வதம் மித்ரபலஸ்ய தே ।
தவ சாக்யாஸ்யதே நூநம்

sa tasyāḥ paripṛcchantyā
vadhaṃ mitrabalasya tē ।
tava cākhyāsyatē nūnam
niṡāyāṃ rākṣasairvadham ॥

of your allied forces and yourself
in the night by the Rākshasas.
