Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 30
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa is slightly shaken hearing the account given by Ṡārdūla about the Vānara army. He then asks Ṡārdūla to give a detailed account of the Vānara chiefs. Ṡārdūla describes each of the Vānara chiefs by name and makes it clear to Rāvaṇa that he has to either give back Seetā or prepare for a fight.

arrival of Rāma of immense strength,
Rāvaṇa was shaken a little
and said these words to Ṡārdūla:

The color on your face is not what it should be,
and you look woebegone, O Night-Rover!
Did you by any chance fall into
the hands of the angry foe?

to that tiger among Rākshasas:

It is impossible, O King, to
spy upon those bulls among Vānaras.
They are of great prowess and immense strength
and are under the protection of Rāghava.

sarvatō rakṣyatē panthā
vānaraiḥ parvatōpamaiḥ ॥
It was not possible even to talk to them,
let alone inquire about them;
the approaches from all sides are
guarded by Vānaras who are giant, like mountains.

I was recognized the moment I entered that army
with no one having to ask me (who I am).
I was grabbed by the Rākshasas by force
and was interrogated intensely.

I was paraded in the midst of that army
by the angry Vānaras.

presented where Rāma was holding council,
with all my limbs bleeding and
with my senses in a disarray.

rāghavēṇa paritrātō
jīvāmīti yadṛcchayā ॥
Being thus beaten almost to death by the Vānaras,
and pleading for mercy with my palms joined,
I was saved by Rāghava; it is
because of sheer luck that I am still alive.

Having filled up the huge ocean with hills and rocks,
Rāma is at the gateway of Laṅkā, armed.

He of immense power who let me go
is advancing towards Laṅkā
surrounded by Vānaras on all sides
with the army deployed in Garuḍa formation.

sītāṃ vā'smai prayacchāṡu
suyuddhaṃ vā pradīyatām ॥
Before he reaches the ramparts
you must quickly decide on one of two courses –
to give back Seetā at once or
to give him a good fight.

Having heard him and seeing
the same (two possibilities) in his mind,
Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākshasas,
expressed his firm resolve to Ṡārdūla:

யதி மாம் ப்ரதியுத்த்யேரந்
தேவகந்தர்வதாநவா: ।

dēvagandharvadānavāḥ ।
naiva sītāṃ pradāsyāmi
sarvalōkabhayādapi ॥
I will not give up Seetā, even if
all the Dēvas, Dānavas and Gandharvas
join in an attack against me,
nor even if all the worlds
come together to threaten me.

தத்த்வமாக்யாஹி ராக்ஷஸ ॥

kīdṛṡāḥ kimprabhāḥ sōmya
vānarā yē durāsadāḥ ।
kasya putrāṡca pautrāṡca
tattvamākhyāhi rākṣasa ॥
My dear! You have reconnoitered that army,
tell me who are the most valiant among those Vānaras.
What is their presence like?
Who among those Vānaras are the most formidable?
How great is their prowess?
Whose sons and grandsons are they?
Tell me all about it, O Rākshasa!

avaṡyaṃ khalusaṅkhyānam
kartavyaṃ yuddhamicchatām ॥
Knowing their strengths and weaknesses,
I shall be able to decide on what to do.
Those who have set their mind on giving a fight,
must carefully reckon with the strength of the enemy!

Thus asked by Rāvaṇa, Ṡārdūla, the best of the spies,
began to narrate in the presence of Rāvaṇa with these words:

yudhi rājā sudurjayaḥ ।
gadgadasyātha putrō'tra
jāmbavāniti viṡrutaḥ ॥
First there is (Sugreeva),
their King, the son of Ṛksharajas,
whom it is impossible to vanquish in a fight.
Then there is the famed Jāmbavan, son of Gadgada.

ததாऽத்ர ப்ரதிபத்ஸ்யாமி
ஜ்ஞாத்வா தேஷாம் பலாபலம் ।
அவஸ்யம் கலுஸங்க்யாநம்
கர்தவ்யம் யுத்தமிச்சதாம் ॥
tathā'tra pratipatsyāmi
jñātvā tēṣāṃ balābalam ।
avaṡyaṃ khalusaṅkhyānam
kartavyaṃ yuddhamicchatām ॥
Knowing their strengths and weaknesses,
I shall be able to decide on what to do.
Those who have set their mind on giving a fight,
must carefully reckon with the strength of the enemy!

ததைவமுக்த: ஸார்தூலோ
ராவணேநோத்தமஸ்சர: ।
இதம் வசநமாரேபே
வக்தும் ராவணஸந்நிதௌ ॥
tathaivamuktaḥ ṡārdūlō
rāvaṇēnōttamaṡcaraḥ ।
idaṃ vacanamārēbhē
vaktuṃ rāvaṇasannidhau ॥
Thus asked by Rāvaṇa, Ṡārdūla, the best of the spies,
began to narrate in the presence of Rāvaṇa with these words:

அதர்க்ஷரஜஸ: புத்ரோ
யுதி ராஜா ஸுதுர்ஜய: ।
கத்கதஸ்யாத புத்ரோऽத்ர
ஜாம்பவாநிதி விஸ்ருத: ॥
atharkṣarajasaḥ putrō
yudhi rājā sudurjayaḥ ।
gadgadasyātha putrō'tra
jāmbavāniti viṡrutaḥ ॥
First there is (Sugreeva),
their King, the son of Ṛksharajas,
whom it is impossible to vanquish in a fight.
Then there is the famed Jāmbavan, son of Gadgada.
