nāsya ṡakyaṃ balaṃ rūpam
prabhāvō vā'pi bhāṣitum ॥
Honestly, I had come to know about this Vānara
only from others who are close to him.
It is impossible to describe his strength,
splendor of his form, or his accomplishments.

He wants to pulverize Laṅkā
all by himself with his power.
Laṅkā, set on fire by him,
is still burning even to this day;
how could you forget this Vānara?

The dark-complexioned hero who is by his side,
his eyes like the lotus,
is a supreme charioter among Ikshwākus.
He is known in the entire world
as a man who brooks no insult;
Dharma in him is firmly established
and never does he transgress it.
He knows how to use Brahmāstra and also the Vēdas
and is foremost among those who know Vēdas.
With his anger that is deadly
and his prowess equaling that of Ṡakra,
he can rend the sky and tear
the earth apart with his arrows.
He is Rāma, O King, whose wife you had carried off
from Janasthāna, and he has come to fight you.

He who is on his right,
with a complexion like pure gold,
spacious chest, red eyes and black hair in curls,
is his brother Lakshmaṇa, dear to him as his own life.
He is equally skilled in polity and war,
and is a savant of all the Ṡastras.
