vacanaṃ pratyuvācēdam
rākṣasādhipamuttamam ॥
Still convulsing with fear,
but prodded by the king,
he responded to that best of
the lords of the Rākshasas:

on the northern shore of the ocean.

At the very sight of me, they became angry,
and jumped on me and grabbed me, and
began pounding me with their fists
and plucking my feathers.

The Vānaras are irascible
and aggressive in nature,
O lord of Rākshasas;
it was simply impossible to
make a conversation (with them),
nor was there an opportunity
to ask (them) anything.

Rāma, the slayer of Virādha, Kabandha and Khara,
has come with Sugreeva, looking for Seetā.

ēṣa rakṣāṃsi nirdhūya
dhanvī tiṣṭhati rāghavaḥ ॥
Rāghava has built a bridge on the ocean
and crossed that body of salt water.
And here he stands armed with the bow,
in utter contempt of Rākshasas.

Thousands of companies of bears and Vānaras,
huge as hills or clouds, blot out the earth from view.

There can possibly be no accord between
the Rākshasa forces and Vānara forces,
any more than there could have been
between the Dēvas and the Dānavas.

Decide quickly one way or the other
before they are at the ramparts;
either surrender Seetā to him
or (be ready to) give a good fight.

Hearing those words of Ṡuka,
Rāvaṇa responded with these words,
his eyes turning deep red with rage
as if he would burn him with them.

like rising sun does to the light of all stars.

Rāma does not know about the arrows
that lie in my quiver like venomous serpents;
and that is why he thinks of fighting me.
Rāghava has had no taste of
my prowess in battle till now.

avagāhya mahāraṅgam
vādayiṣyāmyahaṃ raṇē ॥
Entering the stage called the enemy forces in battle,
I shall play on my bow like on a Veena,
twanging it with fingerpicks of arrows,
creating tumultuous sounds from the string
and a rhythm from the release of Nārāca arrows,
with the eerie and loud cries of
the distressed and the frightened
serving as the reverberation.

Neither Vāsava of thousand eyes
nor Varuṇa himself, nor Yama
and not even Vaiṡravaṇa
has enough fire power of arrows
to stand against me in a fierce battle.

யுத்தகாண்டே சதுர்விம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥

6.24.45 ஈ
ந வாஸவேநாபி ஸஹஸ்ரசக்ஷுஷா
யதாऽஸ்மி ஸக்யோ வருணேந வா ஸ்வயம் ।
யமேந வா தர்ஷயிதும் ஸராக்நிநா
மஹாஹவே வைஸ்ரவணேந வா புந: ॥
na vāsavēnāpi sahasracakṣuṣā
yathā'smi ṡakyō varuṇēna vā svayam ।
yamēna vā dharṣayituṃ ṡarāgninā
mahāhavē vaiṡravaṇēna vā punaḥ ॥
Neither Vāsava of thousand eyes
nor Varuṇa himself, nor Yama
and not even Vaiṡravaṇa
has enough fire power of arrows
to stand against me in a fierce battle.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே சதுர்விம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē caturviṃṡaḥ sargaḥ॥

in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
