Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 24
In this Sarga the Vānara army gets ready and lets off war hoofs, which are reciprocated by the Rākshasas in Laṅkā. Rāma thinks of Seetā and her pitiable condition, while he also admires the beauty of Laṅkā. Then Rāma establishes divisions of the army and juxtaposes them into a formation, with himself and Lakshmaṇa leading a division at the head of that formation.
Once the formation of the army is complete, Rāma orders the release of Ṡuka. Ṡuka goes back to Rāvaṇa, who inquires about his clipped wings. Ṡuka conveys in brief what had happened to him at the hands of the Vānaras. He makes it clear to Rāvaṇa that the only two options he has, is to give Seetā back to Rāma or to be prepared for the battle. The enraged Rāvaṇa says that he will not surrender Seetā under any circumstances. He roars, saying that even Dēvas, Gandharvas and Dānavas combined cannot stand against him in fight, and that even the entire world cannot threaten him enough to make him surrender Seetā.

and provoke them to out-shout the foe.

like the star Rōhiṇee beset by planet Mars.

relevant to him under the current situation.

Look at (this city of) Laṅkā, seeming to be
Vishwakarma’s imagination taken shape instantly,
rising from the top of the mountain to touch the sky!

viṣṇōḥ padamivākāṡam
chāditaṃ pāṇḍarairghanaiḥ ॥
Crowded with many towers,
Laṅkā shines on the earth,
like the foot of Vishṇu in the sky
covered by white clouds.

vanaiṡcaitrarathōpamaiḥ ।

phalapuṣpōpagaiḥ ṡubhaiḥ ॥
Laṅkā is splendid with fruit and flower and
reverberating with the cooing of a variety of birds,
its woods in flower recalling Caitraratha.

kōkilākulaṣaṇḍāni
dōdhavīti ṡivō'nilaḥ ॥
Look at the amorous birds and the
black bees that are quiet (drunken heavily),
and the pleasant breeze that turns
the branches into swings
for the throngs of Kōkilas!

lakṣmaṇaṃ samabhāṣata ।
balaṃ ca tadvai vibhajan
ṡāstradṛṣṭēna karmaṇā ॥
After reflecting thus with Lakshmaṇa,
Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha,
established divisions of the forces
following the principles laid out in the Ṡastras.

the formation, along with Neela!’

Let Ṛshabha, a bull among Vānaras,
guard the right flank of the army
with a large contingent of Vānaras.

as formidable as a tusker in rut,
guard the left flank of the Vānara force.

ருக்ஷமுக்யா மஹாத்மாந:

mūrdhni sthāsyāmyahaṃ yattōḥ
lakṣmaṇēna samanvitaḥ ।
jāmbavāṃṡca suṣēṇaṡca
vēgadarṡī ca vānaraḥ ।
ṛkṣamukhyā mahātmānaḥ
kukṣiṃ rakṣantu tē trayaḥ ॥
I will, in all preparedness,
stay at the head of the formation
along with Lakshmaṇa.
And let the three, Jāmbavan,
Sushēṇa and Vēgadarsi the Vānara,
along with the mighty bear chiefs,
guard the belly region of the formation.

with his immense power protect
the hip region of the formation,
just as Pracēta (Varuṇa) does
the western half of the World.

the lord of Vānaras, of immense strength,
released the messenger Ṡuka
following the orders of Rāma.

Ṡuka, in abject terror
from the harassment by Vānaras,
and set free by the order of Rāma,
went to the lord of Rākshasas.

ஸுகம் வாக்யமபாஷத ॥
rāvaṇaḥ prahasannēva
ṡukaṃ vākyamabhāṣata ॥
Rāvaṇa, with a smile
(in an attempt to cheer him up),
said these words to Ṡuka:

lūnapakṣaṡca dṛṡyasē ।
kaccinnānēkacittānām
tēṣāṃ tvaṃ vaṡamāgataḥ ॥

and feathers are plucked, aren’t they?

viṣṇōḥ padamivākāṡam
chāditaṃ pāṇḍarairghanaiḥ ॥
Crowded with many towers,
Laṅkā shines on the earth,
like the foot of Vishṇu in the sky
covered by white clouds.

puṣpitaiḥ ṡōbhitā laṅkā
vanaiṡcaitrarathōpamaiḥ ।
nānāpataṅgasaṅghuṣṭaiḥ
phalapuṣpōpagaiḥ ṡubhaiḥ ॥
Laṅkā is splendid with fruit and flower and
reverberating with the cooing of a variety of birds,
its woods in flower recalling Caitraratha.

பஸ்ய மத்தவிஹங்காநி
ப்ரலீநப்ரமராணி ச ।
கோகிலாகுலஷண்டாநி

pralīnabhramarāṇi ca ।
kōkilākulaṣaṇḍāni
dōdhavīti ṡivō'nilaḥ ॥
Look at the amorous birds and the
black bees that are quiet (drunken heavily),
and the pleasant breeze that turns
the branches into swings
for the throngs of Kōkilas!

இதி தாஸரதீ ராமோ
லக்ஷ்மணம் ஸமபாஷத ।
பலம் ச தத்வை விபஜந்

iti dāṡarathī rāmō
lakṣmaṇaṃ samabhāṣata ।
balaṃ ca tadvai vibhajan
ṡāstradṛṣṭēna karmaṇā ॥
After reflecting thus with Lakshmaṇa,
Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha,
established divisions of the forces
following the principles laid out in the Ṡastras.

பலமாதாய வீர்யவாந் ।
அங்கத: ஸஹ நீலேந

balamādāya vīryavān ।
aṅgadaḥ saha nīlēna
tiṣṭhēdurasi durjayaḥ ॥
He then ordered, ‘Let the
invincible and heroic Aṅgada,
taking his division of the forces,
stay at the chest region of
the formation, along with Neela!’

vānaraughasamāvṛtaḥ ।
āṡritya dakṣiṇaṃ pārṡvam
ṛṣabhō vānararṣabhaḥ ॥
Let Ṛshabha, a bull among Vānaras,
guard the right flank of the army
with a large contingent of Vānaras.

gandhahastīva durdharṣaḥ
tarasvī gandhamādanaḥ ।
tiṣṭhēdvānaravāhinyāḥ
savyaṃ pārṡvaṃ samāṡritaḥ ॥
Let the invincible Gandhamādana,
as formidable as a tusker in rut,
guard the left flank of the Vānara force.

மூர்த்நி ஸ்தாஸ்யாம்யஹம் யத்தோ:
லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸமந்வித: ।

வேகதர்ஸீ ச வாநர: ।
ருக்ஷமுக்யா மஹாத்மாந:
குக்ஷிம் ரக்ஷந்து தே த்ரய: ॥
mūrdhni sthāsyāmyahaṃ yattōḥ
lakṣmaṇēna samanvitaḥ ।
jāmbavāṃṡca suṣēṇaṡca
vēgadarṡī ca vānaraḥ ।
ṛkṣamukhyā mahātmānaḥ
kukṣiṃ rakṣantu tē trayaḥ ॥
I will, in all preparedness,
stay at the head of the formation
along with Lakshmaṇa.
And let the three, Jāmbavan,
Sushēṇa and Vēgadarsi the Vānara,
along with the mighty bear chiefs,
guard the belly region of the formation.

kapirājō'bhirakṣatu ।
paṡcārdhamiva lōkasya
pracētāstējasā vṛtaḥ ॥
Let the King of the Vānaras
with his immense power protect
the hip region of the formation,
just as Pracēta (Varuṇa) does
the western half of the World.

மஹாவாநரரக்ஷிதா ।
அநீகிநீ ஸா விபபௌ

mahāvānararakṣitā ।
anīkinī sā vibhabhau
yathā dyauḥ sābhrasamplavā ॥
The army, thus disposed and
impregnably guarded by the greatest of the Vānaras,
shone like the sky filled with sailing clouds.

mahataṡca mahīruhān ।
āsēdurvānarā laṅkām
vimardayiṣavō raṇē ॥
Arming themselves with mountain crests and huge trees,
the Vānaras reached Laṅkā eager to pummel it.

ஸிகரைர்விகிராமைநாம்
லங்காம் முஷ்டிபிரேவ வா ।
இதி ஸ்ம ததிரே ஸர்வே

laṅkāṃ muṣṭibhirēva vā ।
iti sma dadhirē sarvē
manāṃsi harisattamāḥ ॥
All those eminent Vānaras made up their minds:
‘We will smash this Laṅkā with
these mountain crests or with our fists.’

ததோ ராமோ மஹாதேஜா:
ஸுக்ரீவமிதமப்ரவீத் ।
ஸுவிபக்தாநி ஸைந்யாநி

sugrīvamidamabravīt ।
suvibhaktāni sainyāni
ṡuka ēṣa vimucyatām ॥
Then Rāma of immense strength
said these words to Sugreeva:
‘The army formation is complete;
let this Ṡuka be released!’

ராமஸ்ய வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
வாநரேந்த்ரோ மஹாபல: ।
மோசயாமாஸ தம் தூதம்

rāmasya vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
vānarēndrō mahābalaḥ ।
mōcayāmāsa taṃ dūtam
ṡukaṃ rāmasya ṡāsanāt ॥
Hearing the words of Rāma,
the lord of Vānaras, of immense strength,
released the messenger Ṡuka
following the orders of Rāma.

மோசிதோ ராமவாக்யேந
வாநரைஸ்சாபிபீடித: ।
ஸுக: பரமஸந்த்ரஸ்தோ

mōcitō rāmavākyēna
vānaraiṡcābhipīḍitaḥ ।
ṡukaḥ paramasantrastō
rakṣōdhipamupāgamat ॥
Ṡuka, in abject terror
from the harassment by Vānaras,
and set free by the order of Rāma,
went to the lord of Rākshasas.

ராவண: ப்ரஹஸந்நேவ
ஸுகம் வாக்யமபாஷத ॥
rāvaṇaḥ prahasannēva
ṡukaṃ vākyamabhāṣata ॥
Rāvaṇa, with a smile
(in an attempt to cheer him up),
said these words to Ṡuka:

கிமிமௌ தே ஸிதௌ பக்ஷௌ
லூநபக்ஷஸ்ச த்ருஸ்யஸே ।

kimimau tē sitau pakṣau
lūnapakṣaṡca dṛṡyasē ।
kaccinnānēkacittānām
tēṣāṃ tvaṃ vaṡamāgataḥ ॥
