Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 19
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa introduces himself to Rāma and seeks refuge. Rāma grants him refuge. Rāma then asks Vibheeshaṇa to recount the strengths and weaknesses of Rāvaṇa. Vibheeshaṇa tells him about Kumbhakarṇa, Indrajit, Prahasta and other Rākshasas and their past exploits. Rāma assures him that he will kill all of them and make him the king. And, on his command, Lakshmaṇa brings water from the ocean and consecrates Vibheeshaṇa as the king. All the Vānaras applaud.
Sugreeva and Hanumān ask Vibheeshaṇa whether he can think of an Upāya for the army to cross the ocean and reach Laṅkā. Vibheeshaṇa suggests that they should seek the help of the ocean itself, which is likely to oblige because it actually resides in the place dug by Rāma’s ancestors. Everyone agrees that it is the right thing to do.

bhūmiṃ samavalōkayan ॥
The sagacious Vibheeshaṇa, Rāvaṇa’s younger brother,
having obtained the promise of protection from Rāghava,
bent his head (from the sky) and looked at the ground.

bhaktairanucaraiḥ saha ।
sa tu rāmasya dharmātmā
nipapāta vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
Rejoicing in his heart, Vibheeshaṇa the Dharmātma,
along with his devoted followers descended to the ground.

சதுர்பி: ஸஹ ராக்ஷஸை: ।

ஸாம்ப்ரதம் ஸம்ப்ரஹர்ஷணம் ॥
pādayōrnipapātātha
caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ ।
abravīcca tadā rāmam
vākyaṃ tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
dharmayuktaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca
sāmprataṃ sampraharṣaṇam ॥
Falling at Rāma’s feet,
along with the other Rākshasas,
Vibheeshaṇa said these words
that were appropriate for the situation,
in alignment with Dharma,
and enhanced the joy of the occasion.

bhavantaṃ sarvabhūtānām
ṡaraṇyaṃ ṡaraṇāgataḥ ॥
I am the younger brother of Rāvaṇa.
I have been insulted by him.
I seek refuge in you, who is
the refuge for all creatures.

bhavadgataṃ mē rājyaṃ ca
jīvitaṃ ca sukhāni ca ॥
I have abjured Laṅkā, friends and riches.
My kingdom, my life and my happiness depends on you.

Hearing those words of his,
and after comforting him with his words,

Thus asked by Rāma who accomplished everything with ease,
he began to describe the forces of Rāvaṇa in detail.

gandharvāsurarakṣasām ।
rājaputra daṡagrīvō
varadānāt svayambhuvaḥ ॥
By virtue of a boon granted him
by the Self-Create, O Prince,
the Ten-Necked is immune from death
at the hands of any creature,
including Gandharvas, Asuras and Rākshasas.

mama jyēṣṭhaṡca vīryavān ।
kumbhakarṇō mahātējāḥ
ṡakrapratibalō yudhi ॥
Kumbhakarṇa, our brother,
who is younger to Rāvaṇa and older to me,
is very powerful and valorous;
he is strong enough to stand against
Ṡakra on the battle-field.

maṇibhadraḥ parājitaḥ ॥
O Rāma! His army chief, known by the name of Prahasta
defeated Maṇibhadra in the battle on Mount Kailāsa.

avadhyakavacō yudhi ।
dhanurādāya yastiṣṭhan
adṛṡyō bhavatīndrajit ॥
Indrajit, with his indestructible armor
and fingers protected by gloves
made from the skin of monitor lizard,
standing with bow in his hand,
(fights) in the battle without being seen.

tarpayitvā hutāṡanam ।

indrajiddhanti rāghava ॥
Propitiating the god of fire,
deploying extraordinary strategies in battle
and disappearing from view,
Indrajit slays his foes, O Rāghava.

rākṣasaṡcāpyakampanaḥ ।
anīkasthāstu tasyaitē
lōkapālasamā yudhi ॥
Mahōdara and Mahāpārṡwa, and Akampana the Rākshasa,
peers of the Guardians of the world on the battle-field
are the commanders of his army.

rākṣasāṃ kāmarūpiṇām ।
māṃsaṡōṇitabhakṣāṇām
laṅkāpuranivāsinām ॥
There are tens of thousands of crores of Rākshasas
who can take any form at will,
and who feed on flesh and blood
that reside in Laṅkā.

saha dēvaistu tē bhagnā
rāvaṇēna mahātmanā ॥
Rāvaṇa, the mighty king, with their help,
fought with the Guardians of the worlds,
and defeated them along with the Dēvas.

ராமோ த்ருடபராக்ரம: ।

rāmō dṛḍhaparākramaḥ ।
anvīkṣya manasā sarvam
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Having heard Vibheeshaṇa and
visualized the rest of it all in his mind,
Rāma of unshakable prowess said these words:

hyavagacchāmi tānyaham ॥
I fully realize the significance of Rāvaṇa’s exploits,
whose true account you have provided, O Vibheeshaṇa!

saprahastaṃ sabāndhavam ।
rājānaṃ tvāṃ kariṣyāmi
satyamētad bravīmi tē ॥
Yet, let me tell you in all honesty,
that I will kill the Ten-Necked
along with Prahasta and his kin,
and I will make you the king.

pitāmahasakāṡaṃ vā
na mē jīvan vimōkṣyatē ॥
Let him flee to where he can,
to Rasātala or to Pātala
or to the presence of Grandsire Himself,
he shall not escape from me alive.

ahatvā rāvaṇaṃ saṅkhyē
saputrabalabāndhavam ।
ayōdhyāṃ na pravēkṣyāmi
tribhistairbhrātṛbhiḥ ṡapē ॥
Without slaying Rāvaṇa in battle
along with his sons, forces and relations,
I shall not re-enter Ayōdhyā;
this I swear by my three brothers.

On hearing those words of Rāma,
who did everything with ease,
that Dharmātma saluted him, bowing his head
and began to speak:

rākṣasānāṃ vadhē sāhyam
laṅkāyāṡca pradharṣaṇam ।
kariṣyāmi yathāprāṇam
pravēkṣyāmi ca vāhinīm ॥
I will, to the best of my abilities,
penetrate into the (enemy) forces
and help in invading Laṅkā
and killing the Rākshasas.

abravīllakṣmaṇaṃ prītaḥ
samudrājjalamānaya ॥
Then Rāma, pleased with
the words spoken by Vibheeshaṇa,
took him into his embrace, and told
Lakshmaṇa to bring water from the sea.

tēna cēmaṃ mahāprājñam
abhiṣiñca vibhīṣaṇam ।
rājānaṃ rakṣasāṃ kṣipram
prasannē mayi mānada ॥
O you, who uphold the dignity of everyone!
It is my pleasure to see you consecrate at once
the sagacious Vibheeshaṇa as the king of Rākshasas!

madhyēvānaramukhyānām
rājānaṃ rājaṡāsanāt ॥
Thus told, the son of Sumitra
consecrated Vibheeshaṇa as the king,
in this midst of the Vānara chiefs,
doing the bidding of the king.

taṃ prasādaṃ tu rāmasya
dṛṣṭvā sadyaḥ plavaṅgamāḥ ।
pracukruṡurmahātmānam
sādhu sādhviti cābruvan ॥
No sooner did they see
such bestowal of grace by Rāma,
than the Vānaras applauded loudly,
saying, ‘ Well done, well done!’

ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ச விபீஷணம் ॥

kathaṃ sāgaramakṣōbhyam
tarāma varuṇālayam ।
sainyaiḥ parivṛtāḥ sarvē
vānarāṇāṃ mahaujasām ॥
How shall we, and all of this
Vānara army of immense power,
cross the inviolable sea, the abode of Varuṇa?

உபாயம் நாதிகச்சாமோ
யதா நதநதீபதிம் ।
தராம தரஸா ஸர்வே
ஸஸைந்யா வருணாலயம் ॥

tarāma tarasā sarvē
sasainyā varuṇālayam ॥
We could not think of any Upāya of
how to put our strength to use
to cross this abode of Varuṇa,
the lord of east and west flowing rivers.

ப்ரத்யுவாச விபீஷண: ॥
ēvamuktastu dharmajñaḥ

Thus asked, Vibheeshaṇa, the Dharmajña responded:

ஜ்ஞாத்வா கார்யம் மஹாமதி: ॥
samudraṃ rāghavō rājā
ṡaraṇaṃ gantumarhati ।
khanitaḥ sagarēṇāyam
apramēyō mahōdadhiḥ ।
kartumarhati rāmasya
jñātvā kāryaṃ mahāmatiḥ ॥
Rāghava, the king, should
seek the help of the ocean itself.
Knowing that it was dug by Sagara,
this mighty and boundless ocean of mighty intellect
should be able to help Rāma’s business.

Thus told by the well-informed Vibheeshaṇa, the Rākshasa,
Sugreeva went to where Rāma and Lakshmana were.

tataṡcākhyātumārēbhē

sugrīvō vipulagrīvaḥ
sāgarasyōpavēṡanam ।
prakṛtyā dharmaṡīlasya
rāghavasyāpyarōcata ॥
Then Sugreeva of imposing neck
began to convey the good advice of Vibheeshaṇa,
of pleading with the ocean (for help).
And Rāghava, naturally disposed
to the ways of Dharma, liked it.

sa lakṣmaṇaṃ mahātējāḥ
sugrīvaṃ ca harīṡvaram ।
satkriyārthaṃ kriyādakṣaḥ
smitapūrvamuvāca ha ॥
He of immense power then spoke to Lakshmaṇa and
to Sugreeva, the lord of Vānaras and a task master,
with a smile, to follow upon the advice of Vibheeshaṇa:

விபீஷணஸ்ய மந்த்ரோऽயம்
மம லக்ஷ்மண ரோசதே ।
ப்ரூஹி த்வம் ஸஹஸுக்ரீவ:

vibhīṣaṇasya mantrō'yam
mama lakṣmaṇa rōcatē ।
brūhi tvaṃ sahasugrīvaḥ
tavāpi yadi rōcatē ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! I like this idea of Vibheeshaṇa.

bhavān mantravicakṣaṇaḥ ।
ubhābhyāṃ sampradhāryārtham
rōcatē yattaducyatām ॥
Sugreeva is very mature and knowledgeable.
You are good at deliberation, at any time.
Both of you consider the matter carefully
and let me know what you feel.

Without building a bridge over
this formidable abode of Varuṇa,
it would not be possible to reach Laṅkā
even for Suras, Asuras led by Indra!

yathā sainyēna gacchāmaḥ
purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām ॥
Let us implement the advice of Vibheeshaṇa.
Much of time is already lost.
Please command this ocean to do what is needed
for us, along with the army,
to reach the city ruled by Rāvaṇa.

Thus exerted, Rāma laid down
on a mat made of Kuṡa grass on the shore of
that lord of east and west flowing rivers,
resembling the god of fire in a Vēdi.

Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 19
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa introduces himself to Rāma and seeks refuge. Rāma grants him refuge. Rāma then asks Vibheeshaṇa to recount the strengths and weaknesses of Rāvaṇa. Vibheeshaṇa tells him about Kumbhakarṇa, Indrajit, Prahasta and other Rākshasas and their past exploits. Rāma assures him that he will kill all of them and make him the king. And, on his command, Lakshmaṇa brings water from the ocean and consecrates Vibheeshaṇa as the king. All the Vānaras applaud.
Sugreeva and Hanumān ask Vibheeshaṇa whether he can think of an Upāya for the army to cross the ocean and reach Laṅkā. Vibheeshaṇa suggests that they should seek the help of the ocean itself, which is likely to oblige because it actually resides in the place dug by Rāma’s ancestors. Everyone agrees that it is the right thing to do.

and help in invading Laṅkā
and killing the Rākshasas.

Lakshmaṇa to bring water from the sea.

the sagacious Vibheeshaṇa as the king of Rākshasas!

in this midst of the Vānara chiefs,
doing the bidding of the king.

Rāghava, the king, should
seek the help of the ocean itself.
Knowing that it was dug by Sagara,
this mighty and boundless ocean of mighty intellect

Thus told by the well-informed Vibheeshaṇa, the Rākshasa,
Sugreeva went to where Rāma and Lakshmana were.

prakṛtyā dharmaṡīlasya
rāghavasyāpyarōcata ॥
Then Sugreeva of imposing neck
began to convey the good advice of Vibheeshaṇa,
of pleading with the ocean (for help).
And Rāghava, naturally disposed
to the ways of Dharma, liked it.

He of immense power then spoke to Lakshmaṇa and
to Sugreeva, the lord of Vānaras and a task master,
with a smile, to follow upon the advice of Vibheeshaṇa:

Sugreeva is very mature and knowledgeable.
You are good at deliberation, at any time.
Both of you consider the matter carefully
and let me know what you feel.

na rōciṣyati rāghava ।
vibhīṣaṇēna yaccōktam
asmin kālē sukhāvaham ॥
O Rāghava! Why would what Vibheeshaṇa said,
which only brings (the much needed)
relief (from the predicament)
at this time, not appeal to us?

ghōrē'smin varuṇālayē ।
laṅkā nāsādituṃ ṡakyā
sēndrairapi surāsuraiḥ ॥
Without building a bridge over
this formidable abode of Varuṇa,
it would not be possible to reach Laṅkā
even for Suras, Asuras led by Indra!

alaṃ kālātyayaṃ kṛtvā
samudrō'yaṃ niyujyatām ।
yathā sainyēna gacchāmaḥ
purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām ॥
Let us implement the advice of Vibheeshaṇa.
Much of time is already lost.
Please command this ocean to do what is needed
for us, along with the army,
to reach the city ruled by Rāvaṇa.

saṃvivēṡa tadā rāmō
vēdyāmiva hutāṡanaḥ ॥
Thus exerted, Rāma laid down
on a mat made of Kuṡa grass on the shore of
that lord of east and west flowing rivers,
resembling the god of fire in a Vēdi.

யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகோநவிம்ஸ: ஸர்க:॥
