Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 17
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa comes to Rāma seeking refuge in him. Seeing him appear in the sky with weapons and four followers, Sugreeva and others suspect that he has come to attack them, and become ready to fight with him.
Vibheeshaṇa approaches them and introduces himself. He says that he is upset with the conduct of his brother and empathizes with the fate of the miserable Seetā, and that he failed in convincing his brother to give Seetā back to Rāma, and that his brother ill-treated him, and thus he came seeking refuge in Rāma.
Sugreeva informs Rāma about the arrival of Vibheeshaṇa and expresses his misgivings about him, saying that he could be a Rākshasa in disguise trying to infiltrate into the enemy forces only to strike at an opportune time. He suggests that Vibheeshaṇa be killed.
Then Rāma asks all the Vānara chiefs to give their opinions regarding what should be done. Many of the Vānara chiefs speak up, essentially agreeing with Sugreeva, that the Rākshasa cannot be trusted. They suggest that they should send a spy to find out more about him, and take action based on what they learn.
Then Hanumān speaks out, disagreeing with them. He says that it is not practical to send a spy and find out more. He says that he rather sees Vibheeshaṇa as genuine, with a genuine reason to seek refuge in Rāma seeing the slaying of Vāli and Sugreeva’s coronation.

Having spoken bluntly thus to Rāvaṇa,
the younger brother of Rāvaṇa went,
within the same hour, to the place
where Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were.

resembling a peak of Mount Meru and
blazing like a streak of lightning.

tē'pi varmāyudhōpētā
bhūṣaṇōttama bhūṣitāḥ ॥
With him also were four of his followers
of formidable prowess.
They were also armed with weapons and shields
and adorned with the best of ornaments.

divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ ॥
He resembled a cloud and a mountain
with his radiance blazing like
that of Vajra, the weapon (of Indra),
He was wielding the best of weapons
and was adorned with splendid ornaments.

vānaraiḥ saha durddharṣaḥ
cintayāmāsa buddhimān ॥
On seeing him, who was accompanied by four others,
Sugreeva, the invincible and sagacious king of the Vānaras,
thought over the matter, along with the other Vānaras.

After thinking for a while,
he said these well considered words
to all the Vānara chiefs like Hanumān:

caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ ।

This Rākshasa, armed with all
kinds of weapons and supported
by four other Rākshasas is
coming to kill us, without a doubt.

all of those prominent Vānaras,
holding up Sāla trees and boulders,
said these words:

vadhāyaiṣāṃ durātmanām ।
nipatantu hatāṡcaitē
dharaṇyāmalpatējasaḥ ॥
Command us quick, O king,
we will kill these evil souls!
These of trifle strength
shall fall on the ground, dead.

anyōnyaṃ sa vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
uttaraṃ tīramāsādya
khastha ēva vyatiṣṭhata ॥
As they were talking among themselves,
Vibheeshaṇa reached the northern shore
and remained hovering in the sky.

Then the sagacious and mighty (Vibheeshaṇa)
saw Sugreeva and the other Vānara chiefs
and announced in a clear and loud voice:

rākṣasō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
tasyāhamanujō bhrātā
vibhīṣaṇa iti ṡrutaḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa, a Rakshasa given to evil ways,
is the King of the Rākshasas.
I am his younger brother known as Vibheeshaṇa.

tēna sītā janasthānāt
hṛtā hatvā jaṭāyuṣam ।
ruddhā ca vivaṡā dīnā
rākṣasībhiḥ surakṣitā ॥
He killed Jaṭāyu and carried off
Seetā from Janasthāna.
Kept in confinement and closely guarded
by Rākshasis, she is helpless and miserable.

தமஹம் ஹேதுபிர்வாக்யை:
விவிதைஸ்ச ந்யதர்ஸயம் ।

vividhaiṡca nyadarṡayam ।
sādhu niryātyatāṃ sītā
rāmāyēti punaḥpunaḥ ॥
I advised him repeatedly
to give Seetā back to Rāma,
citing many a good reason to do so.

rāvaṇaḥ kālacōditaḥ ।
ucyamānaṃ hitaṃ vākyam
viparīta ivauṣadham ॥
Rāvaṇa, goaded by destiny,
did not appreciate the words
that I said in his best interest,
like a pervert denying medicine.

dāsavaccāvamānitaḥ ।
tyaktvā putrāṃṡca dārāṃṡca
rāghavaṃ ṡaraṇaṃ gataḥ ॥
I have been insulted by him
with harsh words, as if I am his slave.
I came to seek refuge in Rāghava,
giving up my wife and children.

nivēdayata māṃ kṣipram
vibhīṣaṇamupasthitam ॥
Quickly inform Rāghava the Mahātma,
the refuge of all the worlds,
that Vibheeshaṇa has come to him.

yuktō bhavitumarhasi ।
vānarāṇāṃ ca bhadrantē
parēṣāṃ ca parantapa ॥
O Scorcher of the foe! It behooves you
to bring your attention to planning,
strategy, diplomacy and spies!
May all bode well for you regarding
both the Vānaras and the enemies.

rākṣasāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ।
ṡūrāṡca nikṛtijñāṡca
tēṣāṃ jātu na viṡvasēt ॥
These Rākshasas, who can take
any form at will, can remain unseen.
They are valiant and crafty.
They can never be trusted.

ராவணஸ்ய பவேதயம் ।

praṇidhī rākṣasēndrasya
rāvaṇasya bhavēdayam ।
anupraviṡya sō'smāsu
bhēdaṃ kuryānna saṃṡayaḥ ॥
This must be the spy of Rāvaṇa, the Rākshasa King.
Joining us, he would, without a doubt,
create dissension amongst us.

anupraviṡya viṡvastē
kadācit praharēdapi ॥
Or, he himself might be clever enough
to join us, gain your confidence,
find the weak spots, and strike at any time.

மித்ராடவீபலம் சைவ
மௌலம் ப்ருத்யபலம் ததா ।
ஸர்வமேதத்பலம் க்ராஹ்யம்

mitrāṭavībalaṃ caiva
maulaṃ bhṛtyabalaṃ tathā ।
sarvamētadbalaṃ grāhyam
varjayitvā dviṣadbalam ॥
One should utilize only the
standing army, hired mercenaries,
the forces of one’s allies and
those of the forest-belt around one’s kingdom,
but never take help from the forces of one’s enemies.

bhrātā'mitrasya tē prabhō ।
āgataṡca ripōḥ sākṣāt
kathamasmin hi viṡvasēt ॥
He is a Rākshasa by his very nature.
And he is the brother of your foe.
He has come straight from the enemy camp.
How can we repose any trust in him?

தமவேஹி விபீஷணம் ।

tamavēhi vibhīṣaṇam ।
tasyāhaṃ nigrahaṃ manyē
kṣamaṃ kṣamavatāṃ vara ॥
Know that Rāvaṇa himself sent Vibheeshaṇa.
I think the right thing to do is to restrain him,
O foremost among the forgivers!

ṡīghraṃ vyādiṡa nō rājan
vadhāyaiṣāṃ durātmanām ।
nipatantu hatāṡcaitē
dharaṇyāmalpatējasaḥ ॥
Command us quick, O king,
we will kill these evil souls!
These of trifle strength
shall fall on the ground, dead.

anyōnyaṃ sa vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
uttaraṃ tīramāsādya
khastha ēva vyatiṣṭhata ॥
As they were talking among themselves,
Vibheeshaṇa reached the northern shore
and remained hovering in the sky.

உவாச ச மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ:
ஸ்வரேண மஹதா மஹாந் ।

uvāca ca mahāprājñaḥ
svarēṇa mahatā mahān ।
sugrīvaṃ tāṃṡca samprēkṣya
sarvān vānarayūthapān ॥
Then the sagacious and mighty (Vibheeshaṇa)
saw Sugreeva and the other Vānara chiefs
and announced in a clear and loud voice:

ராவணோ நாம துர்வ்ருத்தோ
ராக்ஷஸோ ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ।
தஸ்யாஹமநுஜோ ப்ராதா
விபீஷண இதி ஸ்ருத: ॥
rāvaṇō nāma durvṛttō
rākṣasō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
tasyāhamanujō bhrātā
vibhīṣaṇa iti ṡrutaḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa, a Rakshasa given to evil ways,
is the King of the Rākshasas.
I am his younger brother known as Vibheeshaṇa.

தேந ஸீதா ஜநஸ்தாநாத்
ஹ்ருதா ஹத்வா ஜடாயுஷம் ।
ருத்தா ச விவஸா தீநா

tēna sītā janasthānāt
hṛtā hatvā jaṭāyuṣam ।
ruddhā ca vivaṡā dīnā
rākṣasībhiḥ surakṣitā ॥
He killed Jaṭāyu and carried off
Seetā from Janasthāna.
Kept in confinement and closely guarded
by Rākshasis, she is helpless and miserable.

தமஹம் ஹேதுபிர்வாக்யை:
விவிதைஸ்ச ந்யதர்ஸயம் ।
ஸாது நிர்யாத்யதாம் ஸீதா
ராமாயேதி புந:புந: ॥
tamahaṃ hētubhirvākyaiḥ
vividhaiṡca nyadarṡayam ।
sādhu niryātyatāṃ sītā
rāmāyēti punaḥpunaḥ ॥
I advised him repeatedly
to give Seetā back to Rāma,
citing many a good reason to do so.

ஸ ச ந ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ
ராவண: காலசோதித: ।
உச்யமாநம் ஹிதம் வாக்யம்

sa ca na pratijagrāha
rāvaṇaḥ kālacōditaḥ ।
ucyamānaṃ hitaṃ vākyam
viparīta ivauṣadham ॥
Rāvaṇa, goaded by destiny,
did not appreciate the words
that I said in his best interest,
like a pervert denying medicine.

ஸோऽஹம் பருஷிதஸ்தேந
தாஸவச்சாவமாநித: ।
த்யக்த்வா புத்ராம்ஸ்ச தாராம்ஸ்ச

sō'haṃ paruṣitastēna
dāsavaccāvamānitaḥ ।
tyaktvā putrāṃṡca dārāṃṡca
rāghavaṃ ṡaraṇaṃ gataḥ ॥
I have been insulted by him
with harsh words, as if I am his slave.
I came to seek refuge in Rāghava,
giving up my wife and children.

ஸர்வலோகஸரண்யாய
ராகவாய மஹாத்மநே ।
நிவேதயத மாம் க்ஷிப்ரம்

rāghavāya mahātmanē ।
nivēdayata māṃ kṣipram
vibhīṣaṇamupasthitam ॥
Quickly inform Rāghava the Mahātma,
the refuge of all the worlds,
that Vibheeshaṇa has come to him.

ஏதத்து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
ஸுக்ரீவோ லகுவிக்ரம: ।

ētattu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
sugrīvō laghuvikramaḥ ।
lakṣmaṇasyāgratō rāmam
saṃrabdhamidamabravīt ॥
On hearing those words, Sugreeva of quick strides,
went up to Rāma and told him in great agitation
in the presence of Lakshmaṇa:

ராவணஸ்யாநுஜோ ப்ராதா
விபீஷண இதி ஸ்ருத: ।
சதுர்பி: ஸஹ ரக்ஷோபி:

rāvaṇasyānujō bhrātā
vibhīṣaṇa iti ṡrutaḥ ।
caturbhiḥ saha rakṣōbhiḥ
bhavantaṃ ṡaraṇaṃ gataḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa’s younger brother, known as Vibheeshaṇa
along with four other Rākshasas,
seeks refuge in you.

மந்த்ரே வ்யூஹே நயே சாரே
யுக்தோ பவிதுமர்ஹஸி ।
வாநராணாம் ச பத்ரந்தே

mantrē vyūhē nayē cārē
yuktō bhavitumarhasi ।
vānarāṇāṃ ca bhadrantē
parēṣāṃ ca parantapa ॥
O Scorcher of the foe! It behooves you
to bring your attention to planning,
strategy, diplomacy and spies!
May all bode well for you regarding
both the Vānaras and the enemies.

அந்தர்தாநகதா ஹ்யேதே
ராக்ஷஸா: காமரூபிண: ।
ஸூராஸ்ச நிக்ருதிஜ்ஞாஸ்ச
தேஷாம் ஜாது ந விஸ்வஸேத் ॥
antardhānagatā hyētē
rākṣasāḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ।
ṡūrāṡca nikṛtijñāṡca
tēṣāṃ jātu na viṡvasēt ॥
These Rākshasas, who can take
any form at will, can remain unseen.
They are valiant and crafty.
They can never be trusted.

ப்ரணிதீ ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய
ராவணஸ்ய பவேதயம் ।
அநுப்ரவிஸ்ய ஸோऽஸ்மாஸு
பேதம் குர்யாந்ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
praṇidhī rākṣasēndrasya
rāvaṇasya bhavēdayam ।
anupraviṡya sō'smāsu
bhēdaṃ kuryānna saṃṡayaḥ ॥
This must be the spy of Rāvaṇa, the Rākshasa King.
Joining us, he would, without a doubt,
create dissension amongst us.

அதவா ஸ்வயமேவைஷ
சித்ரமாஸாத்ய புத்திமாந் ।
அநுப்ரவிஸ்ய விஸ்வஸ்தே

chidramāsādya buddhimān ।
anupraviṡya viṡvastē
kadācit praharēdapi ॥
Or, he himself might be clever enough
to join us, gain your confidence,
find the weak spots, and strike at any time.

மித்ராடவீபலம் சைவ
மௌலம் ப்ருத்யபலம் ததா ।
ஸர்வமேதத்பலம் க்ராஹ்யம்

mitrāṭavībalaṃ caiva
maulaṃ bhṛtyabalaṃ tathā ।
sarvamētadbalaṃ grāhyam
varjayitvā dviṣadbalam ॥
One should utilize only the
standing army, hired mercenaries,
the forces of one’s allies and
those of the forest-belt around one’s kingdom,
but never take help from the forces of one’s enemies.

ப்ரக்ருத்யா ராக்ஷஸோஹ்யேஷ
ப்ராதாऽமித்ரஸ்ய தே ப்ரபோ ।
ஆகதஸ்ச ரிபோ: ஸாக்ஷாத்
கதமஸ்மிந் ஹி விஸ்வஸேத் ॥
prakṛtyā rākṣasōhyēṣa
bhrātā'mitrasya tē prabhō ।
āgataṡca ripōḥ sākṣāt
kathamasmin hi viṡvasēt ॥
He is a Rākshasa by his very nature.
And he is the brother of your foe.
He has come straight from the enemy camp.
How can we repose any trust in him?

ராவணேந ப்ரணிஹிதம்
தமவேஹி விபீஷணம் ।
தஸ்யாஹம் நிக்ரஹம் மந்யே
க்ஷமம் க்ஷமவதாம் வர ॥
rāvaṇēna praṇihitam
tamavēhi vibhīṣaṇam ।
tasyāhaṃ nigrahaṃ manyē
kṣamaṃ kṣamavatāṃ vara ॥
Know that Rāvaṇa himself sent Vibheeshaṇa.
I think the right thing to do is to restrain him,
O foremost among the forgivers!
