Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 16
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa rebukes Vibheeshaṇa, saying that it is only natural for siblings and cousins to feel jealous about one who has amassed wealth, gained prominence and is receiving acclaim from everyone in the world. He accuses Vibheeshaṇa of not deserving the affection that he bestowed on him thus far.
Vibheeshaṇa then leaves, along with four other Rākshasas, telling his brother that it is impossible to impress upon one who is caught in the noose of destiny and whose end is fast approaching.

what was in the best interest (of Rāvaṇa).

siblings and cousins fare in this world!
They, the siblings and cousins,
always rejoice when one suffers!

anyone who is capable, learned, valorous,
adheres to Dharma and gains prominence.

when someone is caught in adversity,
all the while hiding their true intentions,
are terrible and to be dreaded.

It is said that
the elephants in a lotus Vana
uttered these verses,
on seeing men armed with the noose;
listen, I will recite them to you.

We have no fear from fire or weapons or noose;
the only ones whom we dread are our
terrible and selfish siblings and cousins.

upāyamētē vakṣyanti
grahaṇē nātra saṃṡayaḥ ।
kṛtsnādbhayājjñātibhayam
sukaṣṭaṃ viditaṃ ca naḥ ॥
For it is these siblings and cousins
that give the tips on how
we can be taken captive.
Danger from siblings and cousins for us
is the worst and is the most-known of all dangers.

vidyatē brahmaṇē damaḥ ।
vidyatē strīṣu cāpalyam
vidyatē jñātitō bhayam ॥
Fear from siblings and cousins is
as natural as wealth is in cows,
self-control in Brāhmaṇas
and fickleness in women.

I receive great acclaim in this world,
have amassed a lot of wealth and
tower among all siblings and cousins.

any more than water drops
that fall on the lotus leaves do.

An ignoble one cannot be soaked in affection,
any more than the earth can in the showers
of the thundering post-monsoon clouds.

You are like a bee that does not stay
(with the flower any longer)
after enjoying the nectar that it loves.
Such is the fate of affection
bestowed on the ignoble!

Affection bestowed on the ignoble goes in vain,
like the bath taken by an elephant,
for it immediately grabs dirt with its trunk
and fouls its body again.

O Night-Rover! If anyone else
had said the kind of words you did,
he would have not been alive in this hour!
Dhik on you, a threat to the family!

caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ ॥
On hearing those harsh words,
Vibheeshaṇa, who spoke for what was just,
sprang up (into the air) with club in hand,
along with four other Rākshasas.

and spoke these words to his brother,
the king of Rākshasas, in exasperation.

jyēṣṭhō mānyaḥ pitṛsamō
na ca dharmapathē sthitaḥ ।
idaṃ tu paruṣaṃ vākyam
na kṣamāmyanṛtaṃ tava ॥
O King! You are my brother,
you may say to me whatever you like.
An elder brother, even the one
who strays from the path of Dharma,
deserves the respect that a father does.
But I cannot tolerate these
harsh words from you, my elder bother.

those who lack clarity in their minds

advice given by their well-wishers.

satataṃ priyavādinaḥ ।
apriyasya tu pathyasya
vaktā ṡrōtā ca durlabhaḥ ॥
It is easy to find, O king,
people who always talk sweetly!
But when it comes to bitter truths
that are not so pleasing to the ears,
it is hard to find one who would venture to say it
and one who would be willing to listen.
Back in Araṇya Kāṇḍa (Ṡlōka 3.37.2), Māreeca says exactly the same words to Rāvaṇa.

in the interest of the welfare
of one who is older to me.
Please protect yourself and this city
and its Rākshasas by every possible means.
I am leaving, and may all bode well for you.
Be happy, I will not be here anymore (to bother you).

In times that are as eerie as these,

வித்யதே கோஷு ஸம்பந்நம்
வித்யதே ப்ரஹ்மணே தம: ।
வித்யதே ஸ்த்ரீஷு சாபல்யம்
வித்யதே ஜ்ஞாதிதோ பயம் ॥
vidyatē gōṣu sampannam
vidyatē brahmaṇē damaḥ ।
vidyatē strīṣu cāpalyam
vidyatē jñātitō bhayam ॥
Fear from siblings and cousins is
as natural as wealth is in cows,
self-control in Brāhmaṇas
and fickleness in women.

yadahaṃ lōkasatkṛtaḥ ।

jñātīnāṃ mūrdhnyavasthitaḥ ॥
You do not like me, my dear, because
I receive great acclaim in this world,
have amassed a lot of wealth and
tower among all siblings and cousins.

patitāstōyabindavaḥ ।
na ṡlōṣamupagacchanti
tathā'nāryēṣu sauhṛdam ॥
Affection does not stick to an ignoble one,
any more than water drops
that fall on the lotus leaves do.

siñcatāmapi garjatām ।
na bhavatyambusaṅklēdaḥ
tathā'nāryēṣu sauhṛdam ॥
An ignoble one cannot be soaked in affection,
any more than the earth can in the showers
of the thundering post-monsoon clouds.

ரஸம் விந்த்ரந்ந திஷ்டதி ।

yathā madhukarastarṣāt
rasaṃ vindranna tiṣṭhati ।
tathā tvamapi tatraiva
tathā'nāryēṣu sauhṛdam ॥
You are like a bee that does not stay
(with the flower any longer)
after enjoying the nectar that it loves.
Such is the fate of affection
bestowed on the ignoble!

yathā pūrvaṃ gajaḥ snātvā
gṛhya hastēna vai rajaḥ ।
dūṣayatyātmanō dēham
tathā'nāryēṣu sauhṛdam ॥
Affection bestowed on the ignoble goes in vain,
like the bath taken by an elephant,
for it immediately grabs dirt with its trunk
and fouls its body again.

anyastvēvaṃvidhaṃ brūyāt
vākyamētanniṡācara ।
asmin muhūrtē na bhavēt
tvāṃ tu dhik kulapāṃsanam ॥
O Night-Rover! If anyone else
had said the kind of words you did,
he would have not been alive in this hour!
Dhik on you, a threat to the family!

உத்பபாத கதாபாணி:
சதுர்பி: ஸஹ ராக்ஷஸை: ॥
ityuktaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyam
nyāyavādī vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
utpapāta gadāpāṇiḥ
caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ ॥
On hearing those harsh words,
Vibheeshaṇa, who spoke for what was just,
sprang up (into the air) with club in hand,
along with four other Rākshasas.

அப்ரவீச்ச ததா வாக்யம்
ஜாதக்ரோதோ விபீஷண: ।
அந்தரிக்ஷகத: ஸ்ரீமாந்

jātakrōdhō vibhīṣaṇaḥ ।
antarikṣagataḥ ṡrīmān
bhrātaraṃ rākṣasādhipam ॥
The blessed Vibheeshaṇa rose into the air,
and spoke these words to his brother,
the king of Rākshasas, in exasperation.

ஸ த்வம் ப்ராதாऽஸி மே ராஜந்

இதம் து பருஷம் வாக்யம்
ந க்ஷமாம்யந்ருதம் தவ ॥
sa tvaṃ bhrātā'si mē rājan
brūhi māṃ yadyadicchasi ।
jyēṣṭhō mānyaḥ pitṛsamō
na ca dharmapathē sthitaḥ ।
idaṃ tu paruṣaṃ vākyam
na kṣamāmyanṛtaṃ tava ॥
O King! You are my brother,
you may say to me whatever you like.
An elder brother, even the one
who strays from the path of Dharma,
deserves the respect that a father does.
But I cannot tolerate these
harsh words from you, my elder bother.

na gṛhṇantyakṛtātmānaḥ
kālasya vaṡamāgatāḥ ॥
Swayed by destiny, O Ten-Faced,
those who lack clarity in their minds
do not heed the well-considered
advice given by their well-wishers.

ஸததம் ப்ரியவாதிந: ।
அப்ரியஸ்ய து பத்யஸ்ய

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan
satataṃ priyavādinaḥ ।
apriyasya tu pathyasya
vaktā ṡrōtā ca durlabhaḥ ॥
It is easy to find, O king,
people who always talk sweetly!
But when it comes to bitter truths
that are not so pleasing to the ears,
it is hard to find one who would venture to say it
and one who would be willing to listen.
Back in Araṇya Kāṇḍa (Ṡlōka 3.37.2), Māreeca says exactly the same words to Rāvaṇa.

sarvabhūtāpahāriṇaḥ ।
na naṡyantamupēkṣē tvām
pradīptaṃ ṡaraṇaṃ yathā ॥
I cannot stay indifferent when you
are getting caught in the noose of destiny,
which can put an end to every creature,
any more than one can when a house is on fire.

ṡitaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ ।
na tvāmicchāmyahaṃ draṣṭum
rāmēṇa nihataṃ ṡaraiḥ ॥
I do not like to see you slain by
Rāma’s arrows that are sharp, decked with gold
and blaze like tongues of flame.

Even men of valor, men of strength and
men who are masters of weapons
crumble like dykes of sand
when destiny casts its evil eye on them.

tanmarṣayatu yaccōktam
gurutvāddhitamicchatā ।
ātmānaṃ sarvathā rakṣa
purīṃ cēmāṃ sarākṣasām ।
svasti tē'stu gamiṣyāmi
sukhī bhava mayā vinā ॥
Please pardon me for saying what I said
in the interest of the welfare
of one who is older to me.
Please protect yourself and this city
and its Rākshasas by every possible means.
I am leaving, and may all bode well for you.
Be happy, I will not be here anymore (to bother you).

நிவார்யமாணஸ்ய மயா ஹிதைஷிணா
ந ரோசதே தே வசநம் நிஸாசர ।
பரீதகாலே ஹி கதாயுஷோ நரா
ஹிதம் ந க்ருஹ்ணந்தி ஸுஹ்ருத்பிரீரிதம் ॥
nivāryamāṇasya mayā hitaiṣiṇā
na rōcatē tē vacanaṃ niṡācara ।
parītakālē hi gatāyuṣō narā
hitaṃ na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhirīritam ॥
O Night-Rover, I am your
well-wisher trying to dissuade you.
But you do not like my advice.
In times that are as eerie as these,
men, whose end is fast approaching,
would obviously not heed the
advice given by friends.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஷோடஸ: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
