Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 8
In this Sarga, various Rākshasa chiefs react to the situation individually. Prahasta says that Hanumān could do the mischief he did, only because the unsuspecting Rākshasas were caught by surprise, or else Hanumān could have not escaped with his life.
Then the other Rākshasas like Durmukha, Nikumbha, Vajrahanu brag that they, each by himself, can kill all the Vānaras and Rāma and Lakshmana. Another Rākshasa, Vajradaṃshṭra by name, says that thousands of Rākshasas should take human form and go to Rāma and trick him saying that they were sent to his aid by his younger brother Bharata and thus take the lives of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa.

an army chief, who was like a dark cloud,
spoke, with his palms joined in reverence:

Not even Dēvas, Dānavas, Gandharvas,
Piṡācas, Patagas and serpents
are capable of standing against you;
what to say, then, of Vānaras, in a battle?

We, relaxed and too assured of ourselves,
were tricked by Hanumān;
otherwise, that Vana-dweller could not
have escaped with his life while I am alive.

karōmyavānarāṃ bhūmim
ājñāpayatu mā bhavān ॥
I can free this entire earth till the ocean’s edge
and all its mountains, woods and forests,
of Vānaras, if only you command me so.

nāgamiṣyati tē duḥkham

I will set up the right defense
against the Vānara, o Night-Rover!
You shall not suffer in the least
for the offence you committed.

வாநரேண ப்ரதர்ஷணம் ॥
idaṃ na kṣamaṇīyaṃ hi
sarvēṣāṃ naḥ pradharṣaṇam ।
ayaṃ paribhavō bhūyaḥ
purasyāntaḥpurasya ca ।
ṡrīmatō rākṣasēndrasya
vānarēṇa pradharṣaṇam ॥
This gross affront on all of us
should, by no means, be tolerated;
and especially the humiliation
to the city and to the inner-quarters,
and the challenge thrown by the Vānara
to the blessed king of Rākshasas.

nivartiṣyāmi vānarān ।
praviṣṭān sāgaraṃ bhīmam
ambaraṃ vā rasātalam ॥
I will go this very hour and
single-handedly stop the Vānaras,
no matter whether they try to
get across the formidable ocean,
or through the sky or through Rasātala.

Then Vajradaṃshṭra of immense strength,
extremely outraged, spoke, as he
clutched his dreaded Parigha that was
smeared with flesh and blood:

kṛpaṇēna tapasvinā ।
rāmē tiṣṭhati durdharṣē
sasugrīvē salakṣmaṇē ॥
Why should we bother about the
pitiable and slogging Hanumān,
while Rāma, along with Sugreeva and
Lakshmaṇa sit there, unassailable?

vikṣōbhya harivāhinīm ॥
I shall, all by myself,
kill Rāma, Sugreeva and Lakshmaṇa
with my Parigha and set
the Vānara army in turmoil
before I return by the end of the day!

This is one other thing I would like to say,
O King, if you are pleased to listen:

பிப்ரதோ மாநுஷம் வபு: ।
ஸர்வே ஹ்யஸம்ப்ரமா பூத்வா
ப்ருவந்து ரகுஸத்தமம் ॥
kāmarūpadharāḥ ṡūrāḥ
subhīmā bhīmadarṡanāḥ ।
rākṣasā vā sahasrāṇi
rākṣasādhipa niṡcitāḥ ।
kākutsthamupasaṅgamya
bibhratō mānuṣaṃ vapuḥ ।
sarvē hyasambhramā bhūtvā
bruvantu raghusattamam ॥
O Lord of Rākshasas! Let thousands of
resolute, valiant, formidable
and fierce-looking Rākshasas,
who are capable of taking any form at will,
take human form and go to Kākutstha
and tell that prominent scion of Raghus,
in a calm and collected manner:

bhrātrā tava yavīyasā ।
sa hi sēnāṃ samutthāpya
kṣipramēvōpayāsyati ॥
“We are sent by Bharata, your younger brother.
He is getting the army ready and will soon leave.”

cāpabāṇāsihastāṡca
tvaritāstatra yāma ha ॥
Meanwhile, we will make haste and swiftly go from here,
wielding spear, Sakti, clubs, bows and arrows.

hatvā tāṃ harivāhinīm ।

prāpayāma yamakṣayam ॥
Standing in the sky in formations,
we will destroy the army of Vānaras
with a torrential pour of boulders and weapons,
sending them to the abode of Yama.

avaṡyamapanītēna
jahatāmēva jīvitam ॥
Once tricked by us thus, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
will certainly give up their lives,
falling prey to our ruse.

a doughty warrior, Nikumbha by name,
said, in a towering rage,
to Rāvaṇa, who made the worlds wail:

mahārājēna saṅgatāḥ ।
ahamēkō haniṣyāmi
rāghavaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ।

sarvānēva ca vānarān ॥
All of you can stay back with the great king!
I, all by myself, can kill Rāghava and Lakshmaṇa,
Sugreeva, Hanumān and all the Vānaras.

Then a Rākshasa, huge like a mountain,
Vajrahanu by name, said these words
licking his chops, in fury:

ஸ்வஸ்தா: க்ரீடந்து நிஸ்சிந்தா:
பிபந்தோ மதுவாருணீம் ॥
svairaṃ kurvantu kāryāṇi
bhavantō vigatajvarāḥ ।
ēkō'haṃ bhakṣayiṣyāmi
tān sarvān hariyūthapān ।
svasthāḥ krīḍantu niṡcintāḥ
pibantō madhuvāruṇīm ॥
You can give up all your worries
and go on with your activities carefree.
Play happily and enjoy your liquor without a concern.
I, all by myself, can devour all of those Vānara chiefs.

sugrīvaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ।
sāṅgadaṃ ca hanūmantam
rāmaṃ ca raṇakuñjaram ॥
I, all by myself, will slay Sugreeva,
Lakshmaṇa, Aṅgada, Hanumān and
Rāma, who fights like an elephant.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே அஷ்டம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē aṣṭamaḥ sargaḥ॥

in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,

உபாய குஸலோ ஹ்யேவ

upāya kuṡalō hyēva

One who is good with Upāyas can
defeat the enemy without breaking a sweat.

ஸுபீமா பீமதர்ஸநா: ।
ராக்ஷஸா வா ஸஹஸ்ராணி
ராக்ஷஸாதிப நிஸ்சிதா: ।
காகுத்ஸ்தமுபஸங்கம்ய
பிப்ரதோ மாநுஷம் வபு: ।
ஸர்வே ஹ்யஸம்ப்ரமா பூத்வா
ப்ருவந்து ரகுஸத்தமம் ॥
kāmarūpadharāḥ ṡūrāḥ
subhīmā bhīmadarṡanāḥ ।
rākṣasā vā sahasrāṇi
rākṣasādhipa niṡcitāḥ ।
kākutsthamupasaṅgamya
bibhratō mānuṣaṃ vapuḥ ।
sarvē hyasambhramā bhūtvā
bruvantu raghusattamam ॥
O Lord of Rākshasas! Let thousands of
resolute, valiant, formidable
and fierce-looking Rākshasas,
who are capable of taking any form at will,
take human form and go to Kākutstha
and tell that prominent scion of Raghus,
in a calm and collected manner:

ப்ராத்ரா தவ யவீயஸா ।
ஸ ஹி ஸேநாம் ஸமுத்தாப்ய

prēṣitā bharatēna sma
bhrātrā tava yavīyasā ।
sa hi sēnāṃ samutthāpya
kṣipramēvōpayāsyati ॥
“We are sent by Bharata, your younger brother.
He is getting the army ready and will soon leave.”

ஸூலஸக்திகதாதர: ।
சாபபாணாஸிஹஸ்தாஸ்ச

ṡūlaṡaktigadādharaḥ ।
cāpabāṇāsihastāṡca
tvaritāstatra yāma ha ॥
Meanwhile, we will make haste and swiftly go from here,
wielding spear, Sakti, clubs, bows and arrows.

ஆகாஸே கணஸ: ஸ்தித்வா
ஹத்வா தாம் ஹரிவாஹிநீம் ।

ākāṡē gaṇaṡaḥ sthitvā
hatvā tāṃ harivāhinīm ।
aṡmaṡastramahāvṛṣṭyā
prāpayāma yamakṣayam ॥
Standing in the sky in formations,
we will destroy the army of Vānaras
with a torrential pour of boulders and weapons,
sending them to the abode of Yama.

ஏவம் சேதுபஸர்பேதாம்
அநயம் ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।
அவஸ்யமபநீதேந

anayaṃ rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
avaṡyamapanītēna
jahatāmēva jīvitam ॥
Once tricked by us thus, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa
will certainly give up their lives,
falling prey to our ruse.

கௌம்பகர்ணிஸ்ததோ வீரோ
நிகும்போ நாம வீர்யவாந் ।
அப்ரவீத் பரமக்ருத்தோ

kaumbhakarṇistatō vīrō
nikumbhō nāma vīryavān ।
abravīt paramakruddhō
rāvaṇaṃ lōkarāvaṇam ॥
Then the valiant son of Kumbhakarṇa,
a doughty warrior, Nikumbha by name,
said, in a towering rage,
to Rāvaṇa, who made the worlds wail:

ஸர்வே பவந்தஸ்திஷ்டந்து
மஹாராஜேந ஸங்கதா: ।

ஸுக்ரீவம் ச ஹநூமந்தம்
ஸர்வாநேவ ச வாநராந் ॥
sarvē bhavantastiṣṭhantu
mahārājēna saṅgatāḥ ।
ahamēkō haniṣyāmi
rāghavaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ।
sugrīvaṃ ca hanūmantam
sarvānēva ca vānarān ॥
All of you can stay back with the great king!
I, all by myself, can kill Rāghava and Lakshmaṇa,
Sugreeva, Hanumān and all the Vānaras.

ராக்ஷஸ: பர்வதோபம: ।
க்ருத்த: பரிலிஹந் வக்த்ரம்

tatō vajrahanurnāma
rākṣasaḥ parvatōpamaḥ ।
kruddhaḥ parilihan vaktram
jihvayā vākyamabravīt ॥
Then a Rākshasa, huge like a mountain,
Vajrahanu by name, said these words
licking his chops, in fury:

ஸ்வைரம் குர்வந்து கார்யாணி
பவந்தோ விகதஜ்வரா: ।

ஸ்வஸ்தா: க்ரீடந்து நிஸ்சிந்தா:
பிபந்தோ மதுவாருணீம் ॥
svairaṃ kurvantu kāryāṇi
bhavantō vigatajvarāḥ ।
ēkō'haṃ bhakṣayiṣyāmi
tān sarvān hariyūthapān ।
svasthāḥ krīḍantu niṡcintāḥ
pibantō madhuvāruṇīm ॥
You can give up all your worries
and go on with your activities carefree.
Play happily and enjoy your liquor without a concern.
I, all by myself, can devour all of those Vānara chiefs.

அஹமேகோ வதிஷ்யாமி
ஸுக்ரீவம் ஸஹலக்ஷ்மணம் ।
ஸாங்கதம் ச ஹநூமந்தம்
ராமம் ச ரணகுஞ்ஜரம் ॥
ahamēkō vadhiṣyāmi
sugrīvaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ।
sāṅgadaṃ ca hanūmantam
rāmaṃ ca raṇakuñjaram ॥
I, all by myself, will slay Sugreeva,
Lakshmaṇa, Aṅgada, Hanumān and
Rāma, who fights like an elephant.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே அஷ்டம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē aṣṭamaḥ sargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the eighth Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
