The King Sugreeva, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
destroyers of foe, were at the center (of that army)
surrounded by the many Vānaras of formidable strength.

supported by a force of a hundred crores,
protected one of the sides (of the army).

by a large contingent of bears,
protected the rear (of the army), led by Sugreeva.

who was the best among all creatures,
commanded that army.

went everywhere hastening the Vānaras (to march quickly).

Advancing thus, those tigers among Vānaras,
filled with the pride of their strength,
saw the great Sahya mountain with its
trees and creepers, ponds, woods and lakes
with flowers in full bloom.

rāmasya ṡāsanaṃ jñātvā
bhīmakōpasya bhītavat ।
varjayannagarābhyāṡān
tathā janapadānapi ।
sāgaraughanibhaṃ bhīmam
tadvānarabalaṃ mahat ।
utsasarpa mahāghōṣam
bhīmaghōṣa ivārṇavaḥ ॥
That mighty Vānara army,
surging like a huge ocean,
and raising a mighty din that
resembled the roar of the ocean,
avoided, with trepidation, getting anywhere
near a city and entering a populous country-side,
being well aware of the orders of Rāma,
and how terrible his anger could be.

The valorous elephants among Vānaras
swiftly marched by the side of the son of Daṡaratha,
like noble steeds that feel the spur.

Carried by the two Vānaras, the two
(Rāma and Lakshmaṇa) shone like
the sun and the moon in
conjunction with the great planets.

sasainyō dakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ॥
Hailed by the king of Vānaras and by Lakshmaṇa,
Rāma, the Dharmātma, thus marched
in the southern direction with the army.

And Lakshmaṇa, mounted on Aṅgada,
skilled in making meaningful conversation,
said these auspicious words to Rāma,
each one dense in its feel and meaning.

ayōdhyāṃ pratiyāsyasi ॥
You shall soon slay Rāvaṇa and
regain the abducted Vaidēhi.
With your object fulfilled you
shall soon return to Ayōdhyā
that is plentiful in everything.

pūrṇavalgusvarāṡcēmē
pravadanti mṛgadvijāḥ ।
prasannāṡca diṡaḥ sarvā
vimalaṡca divākaraḥ ॥
The nice breeze blows gently
comforting the army with kindness.
These beasts and birds utter
full-throated melodious cries.
The four quarters are pleasant
and the sun shines clear.

ṡuddhāṡca paramarṣamaḥ ।
arciṣmantaḥ prakāṡantē
dhruvaṃ sarvē pradakṣiṇam ॥
Uṡanas, son of Bhṛgu, of pleasant shine, follows you.
The constellation of Brahma is serene.
The clear constellation of the Maharshis,
shining bright, circumambulates the star Dhruva.
Uṡanas is Venus.

Triṡaṅku, our ancestor, a Rājarshi of Ikshwāku lineage,
along with his Purōhita, shines resplendently.

a special constellation for the great Ikshwākus,
is bright, uncrossed by malignant planets.

The star Moola of the Rākshasas,
which is presided over by Niṛṛti,
is severely afflicted by the comet
that is rooted in close proximity.

Everything is set for the
destruction of all Rākshasas.
Their days are numbered
with their stars afflicted by planets.

The waters are pleasant and tasty,
the woods are abundant in fruit,
the scent-laden breeze blows mildly,
and the trees bear seasonal flowers.

ēvamārya samīkṣyaitān
prītō bhavitumarhisi ॥
The Vānara army, marching in formation,
my lord, is exceedingly splendid
like the army of the Dēvas
that killed Tāraka in battle.
Considering all this,
you should feel pleased, O noble one!

marched on, covering the face of the earth,
with only their talons and fangs for weapons.

The humongous pall of dust raised
by the hands and feet of the Vānaras
covered the world and
obscured the brightness of the sun.

The formidable Vānara army marched on,
as if it was going to blot the entire
southern direction, including its
forests, mountains and the skies,
like banks of clouds blotting the sky.

to cross the rivers and streams,
their flow, obstructed, turned backwards
for a distance of many Yōjanas.

utsasarpa mahāghōṣam
bhīmaghōṣa ivārṇavaḥ ॥
That mighty Vānara army,
surging like a huge ocean,
and raising a mighty din that
resembled the roar of the ocean,
avoided, with trepidation, getting anywhere
near a city and entering a populous country-side,
being well aware of the orders of Rāma,
and how terrible his anger could be.

The valorous elephants among Vānaras
swiftly marched by the side of the son of Daṡaratha,
like noble steeds that feel the spur.

Carried by the two Vānaras, the two
(Rāma and Lakshmaṇa) shone like
the sun and the moon in
conjunction with the great planets.

jagāma rāmō dharmātmā
sasainyō dakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ॥
Hailed by the king of Vānaras and by Lakshmaṇa,
Rāma, the Dharmātma, thus marched
in the southern direction with the army.

And Lakshmaṇa, mounted on Aṅgada,
skilled in making meaningful conversation,
said these auspicious words to Rāma,
each one dense in its feel and meaning.

You shall soon slay Rāvaṇa and
regain the abducted Vaidēhi.
With your object fulfilled you
shall soon return to Ayōdhyā
that is plentiful in everything.

pravadanti mṛgadvijāḥ ।
prasannāṡca diṡaḥ sarvā
vimalaṡca divākaraḥ ॥
The nice breeze blows gently
comforting the army with kindness.
These beasts and birds utter
full-throated melodious cries.
The four quarters are pleasant
and the sun shines clear.

ṡuddhāṡca paramarṣamaḥ ।
arciṣmantaḥ prakāṡantē
dhruvaṃ sarvē pradakṣiṇam ॥
Uṡanas, son of Bhṛgu, of pleasant shine, follows you.
The constellation of Brahma is serene.
The clear constellation of the Maharshis,
shining bright, circumambulates the star Dhruva.
Uṡanas is Venus.

Triṡaṅku, our ancestor, a Rājarshi of Ikshwāku lineage,
along with his Purōhita, shines resplendently.

The twin constellation Viṡākha,
a special constellation for the great Ikshwākus,
is bright, uncrossed by malignant planets.

nakṣatramabhipīḍyatē ।
mūlō mūlavatā spṛṣṭō

The star Moola of the Rākshasas,
which is presided over by Niṛṛti,
is severely afflicted by the comet
that is rooted in close proximity.

rākṣasānāmupasthitam ।
kālē kālagṛhītānām
nakṣatraṃ grahapīḍitam ॥
Everything is set for the
destruction of all Rākshasas.
Their days are numbered
with their stars afflicted by planets.

The waters are pleasant and tasty,
the woods are abundant in fruit,
the scent-laden breeze blows mildly,
and the trees bear seasonal flowers.

saṅgrāmē tārakāmayē ।
ēvamārya samīkṣyaitān
prītō bhavitumarhisi ॥
The Vānara army, marching in formation,
my lord, is exceedingly splendid
like the army of the Dēvas
that killed Tāraka in battle.
Considering all this,
you should feel pleased, O noble one!

And that massive army of tigers among bears and Vānaras,
marched on, covering the face of the earth,
with only their talons and fangs for weapons.

bhīmamantardadhē lōkam
nivārya savituḥ prabhām ॥
The humongous pall of dust raised
by the hands and feet of the Vānaras
covered the world and
obscured the brightness of the sun.

chādayantī yayau bhīmā
dyāmivāmbudasantatiḥ ॥
The formidable Vānara army marched on,
as if it was going to blot the entire
southern direction, including its
forests, mountains and the skies,
like banks of clouds blotting the sky.

satataṃ bahuyōjanam ।
nadīsrōtāṃsi sarvāṇi
sasyandurviparītavat ॥
With the (massive) army taking forever
to cross the rivers and streams,
their flow, obstructed, turned backwards
for a distance of many Yōjanas.
