balānāmanudarṡanē ॥
O Rāma! Rāvaṇa, who himself is mighty strong,
is personally overseeing his forces assiduously,
lusting for a fight.

nādēyaṃ pārvataṃ vānyam
kṛtrimaṃ ca caturvidham ॥
Laṅkā, again, is difficult to scale
and impregnable even for Dēvas.
Fortified by the four defences,
rivers, mountains, forests and man-made ones,
it strikes terror (in anyone’s heart).

With it situated on the farther
shore of the wide ocean, O Rāghava,
there are no tracks for the ships to sail,
and there is no means of communication
from any other part of the world.

With its citadel built on the top of the mountain,
and teeming with horses and elephants as it does,
Laṅkā, which is comparable to the city of the Dēvas,
is absolutely invincible.

add to the splendor of the city of evil-minded Rāvaṇa.

by ten thousand Rākshasas.
All of them, who fight on the
frontlines of battlefield with swords,
are armed with spears and unassailable.

prākārāṡcāvasāditāḥ ।
balaikadēṡaḥ kṣapitō
rākṣasānāṃ mahātmanām ॥
I have destroyed the bridges,
drained the moats, burnt the city of Laṅkā,
battered down the ramparts and
decimated a good portion of the mighty Rākshasas.

By one means or the other
we will cross the abode of Varuṇa.
Be assured that the city of Laṅkā
will be destroyed by the Vānaras.

ஆநயிஷ்யந்தி ராகவ ॥
aṅgadō dvividō maindō
jāmbavān panasō nalaḥ ।
nīlaḥ sēnāpatiṡcaiva
balaṡēṣēṇa kiṃ tava ।
plavamānā hi gatvā tām
rāvaṇasya mahā purīm ।
saparvatavanāṃ bhittvā
sakhātāṃ ca tōraṇām ।
saprākārāṃ sabhavanām
ānayiṣyanti rāghava ॥
Leave aside the rest of the army;
Aṅgada, Dwivida, Mainda, Jāmbavan,
Panasa, Nala and Neela the Commander-in-Chief,
can fly across to Rāvaṇa’s great city,
uproot it along with its mountains, forests,
moats, arched doorways, ramparts and buildings
and bring it here, O Rāghava!

பலாநாம் ஸர்வஸங்க்ரஹம் ।

balānāṃ sarvasaṅgraham ।
muhūrtēna tu yuktēna
prasthānamabhirōcaya ॥
Pass your orders to gather all the forces
with no further delay,
if you like to start the expedition
at the (next) best hour.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே த்ருதீயஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē tṛtīyassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the third Sarga
in Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
