Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 2
In this Sarga, Sugreeva urges Rāma not to worry how they would cross the ocean. He assures Rāma that all the Vānaras are ready to even die for his sake. He asks Rāma to use his sharp intellect and focus on a finding a way to cross the ocean. He suggests that a bridge should be built over the ocean. He says that he sees good omens and somehow the Vānaras will cross the ocean. He asks Rāma to give up the grief and show his fiery side.

To that Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha,
who was gravely worried about it,
the blessed Sugreeva said these

like any other ordinary person?
Don’t be so consumed by it,
let go off your worry, like
an ingrate would, a friendship!

and know where the enemy lives.

You are intelligent, a master of Astras
a savant of worldly affairs
and a man of great discernment.
Let go off these pedestrian thoughts,
like any resolute man would,
thoughts that ruin the purpose.

Crossing the ocean that is
infested with the giant crocodiles
we will ascend to Laṅkā
and also kill your enemy.

All objects of a person who is dejected,
who lacks enthusiasm, and whose mind
is overwhelmed by grief, will be ruined;
and he will fall only into (greater) troubles.

sarvē nō hariyūthapāḥ ।
tvatpriyārthaṃ kṛtōtsāhāḥ
pravēṣṭumapi pāvakam ।
ēṣāṃ harṣēṇa jānāmi
tarkaṡcāsmin dṛḍhō mama ॥
All the valiant and capable chiefs
of our Vānara army are ready
to plunge even into fire for your sake;
I know this from their enthusiasm
and from everything I can reason out.

It is for you to do now whatever it takes
to kill the enemy, Rāvaṇa of evil deeds,
and regain Seetā with your prowess.

Take it from me that the moment
we see that city of Laṅkā
situated on the top of the Trikūṭa peak,
Rāvaṇa is as good as slain.

கோரே து வருணாலயே ।

ghōrē tu varuṇālayē ।
laṅkā na mardituṃ ṡakyā
sēndrairapi surāsuraiḥ ॥
Without building a bridge over
the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa,
it would be impossible to batter down Laṅkā
even for the Suras and Asuras
even with the help of Indra.

sēturbaddhaḥ samudrē ca

sarvaṃ tīrṇaṃ ca mē sainyam
jitamityupadhāraya ।
imē hi samarē vīrā
harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ॥
The moment we build the bridge and
all my army crosses the ocean and arrives at Laṅkā,
victory is ours, I assure you.
These Vānaras, who can take
any form at will, are heroic fighters.

puruṣasya hi lōkē'smin
ṡōkaḥ ṡauryāpakarṣaṇaḥ ॥
Therefore, O King, enough of the disquiet
that would only ruin all prospects.
Sadness only diminishes the bravery of a man.

tadalaṃkaraṇāyaiva
karturbhavati satvaram ॥
You should now summon the courage
that is demanded of any man.
It is an adornment for anyone
who wants to get things done.

விநஷ்டே வா ப்ரநஷ்டே வா

asmin kālē mahāprājña
sattvamātiṣṭha tējasā ।
ṡūrāṇāṃ hi manuṣyāṇām
tvadvidhānāṃ mahātmanām ।
vinaṣṭē vā pranaṣṭē vā
ṡōkaḥ sarvārthanāṡanaḥ ॥
It is time for you now, O Sagacious one,
to display your power and energy.
Grief, no matter whether it is over
something that is lost or destroyed,
would only lead to the ruin
of everything that is at stake,
for Mahātmas and valorous men like you.

sarvaṡāstrārthakōvidaḥ ।
madvidhaiḥ sacivaiḥ sārdham
ariṃ jētumihārhasi ॥
You are the smartest of all.
You are a savant of all Ṡastras.
With counsellors like me assisting you,
you are bound to vanquish the enemy.

gṛhītadhanuṣō yastē

I can’t think of anyone, O Rāghava,
in any of the three worlds,
who can face you in battle
when you are armed with the bow.

na tē kāryaṃ vipatsyatē ।

Your work, entrusted to the apes, will not suffer.
Crossing the sea that never depletes,
you shall see Seetā before long!

Therefore enough of grieving;
summon all your wrath, O lord of the earth!
Inactivity can easily make Kshatriyas dull.
Everyone fears a ruthless man.

sūkṣmabuddhirvicāraya ॥
Please, O you of incisive intellect,
think of how you, along with all of us,
can cross the formidable ocean, the lord of rivers.

take it for granted that the victory is certain.

These Vānaras are valiant and can take

They will destroy the foe with
torrents of boulders and trees.

I can clearly see that somehow
we will cross the abode of Varuṇa.
Consider him slain in the battle,
O you who delight in the fray!

There is no use saying the
same thing in multiple ways!
You will win, by all means.
I see good omens and
my mind is filled with joy.

Rāvaṇa is as good as slain.

Without building a bridge over
the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa,
it would be impossible to batter down Laṅkā
even for the Suras and Asuras
even with the help of Indra.

imē hi samarē vīrā
harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ॥
The moment we build the bridge and
all my army crosses the ocean and arrives at Laṅkā,
victory is ours, I assure you.
These Vānaras, who can take
any form at will, are heroic fighters.

Therefore, O King, enough of the disquiet
that would only ruin all prospects.
Sadness only diminishes the bravery of a man.

You should now summon the courage
that is demanded of any man.

ṡūrāṇāṃ hi manuṣyāṇām
tvadvidhānāṃ mahātmanām ।
vinaṣṭē vā pranaṣṭē vā
ṡōkaḥ sarvārthanāṡanaḥ ॥
It is time for you now, O Sagacious one,
to display your power and energy.
Grief, no matter whether it is over
something that is lost or destroyed,
would only lead to the ruin
of everything that is at stake,
for Mahātmas and valorous men like you.

You are the smartest of all.
You are a savant of all Ṡastras.
With counsellors like me assisting you,
you are bound to vanquish the enemy.

I can’t think of anyone, O Rāghava,

who can face you in battle
when you are armed with the bow.

Therefore enough of grieving;
summon all your wrath, O lord of the earth!
Inactivity can easily make Kshatriyas dull.
Everyone fears a ruthless man.

Please, O you of incisive intellect,
think of how you, along with all of us,
can cross the formidable ocean, the lord of rivers.

take it for granted that the victory is certain.

tānarīn vidhamiṣyanti
ṡilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ ॥
These Vānaras are valiant and can take
any form at will in the battle.
They will destroy the foe with
torrents of boulders and trees.

hatamityēva taṃ manyē
yuddhē ṡatrunibarhaṇa ॥
I can clearly see that somehow
we will cross the abode of Varuṇa.
Consider him slain in the battle,
O you who delight in the fray!

கிமுக்த்வா பஹுதா சாபி
ஸர்வதா விஜயீ பவாந் ।

sarvathā vijayī bhavān ।
nimittāni ca paṡyāmi
manō mē samprahṛṣyati ॥
There is no use saying the
same thing in multiple ways!
You will win, by all means.
I see good omens and
my mind is filled with joy.

ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே த்விதீயஸ்ஸர்க:॥
