Sundara Kaanda Sargas 53
Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 53
In this Sarga, heeding the advice of his brother Vibheeshaṇa that it is not appropriate to kill a messenger, Rāvaṇa orders Hanumān’s tail to be set on fire. Following that command, the Rākshasas wrap Hanumān’s tail with pieces of cloth, drench it with oil and set it on fire. Then they parade him around the city of Laṅkā, proclaiming him as a spy.
A few Rākshasis carry the news to Seetā, hearing which she feels as bad as she did about her own abduction. She then prays to Agni, that his touch should be cool to Hanumān. Hanumān immediately feels his tail become cool as if a pack of ice was placed on it, even though it is burning with blazing flames; he reasons that it must be because Agni wants to further the cause of Rāma.
By growing in size again and shrinking to a puny size again, he relieves himself from the bonds. Growing again in size, he grabs a Parigha that was by the gateway of Laṅkā and kills all its guards.
