    Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 52
    In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa reacts to the instructions of Rāvaṇa to kill Hanumān. Vibheeshaṇa counsels him that it is not befitting of a great person like him to kill an envoy, who is merely delivering the message from someone else. Vibheeshaṇa firmly, but with due respect, expresses his opinion that it is unheard of, and against all the known norms, for anyone to kill an envoy and as the worst, an envoy could only be punished with disfigurement of limbs or by flogging.
    Further, Vibheeshaṇa argues that if Hanumān is killed, there would be no one who would go back and incite the princes for a fight, and thus Rāvaṇa, a lover of fights, would miss the prospect of a fight. Vibheeshaṇa suggests that Rāvaṇa should rather send a small contingent of his huge army of one-crore plus warriors, to contain the princess and thus display his power over his enemies.

    ஆஜ்ஞாபயத்வதம் தஸ்ய
    ராவண: க்ரோதமூர்சித: ॥
    tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā
    vānarasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    ājñāpayadvadhaṃ tasya
    rāvaṇaḥ krōdhamūrchitaḥ ॥
    Rāvaṇa was beside himself with fury on hearing the
    the words of that mighty Vānara, and ordered for his death.

    வதே தஸ்ய ஸமாஜ்ஞப்தே
    ராவணேந துராத்மநா ।
    நிவேதிதவதோ தௌத்யம்
    நாநுமேநே விபீஷண: ॥
    vadhē tasya samājñaptē
    rāvaṇēna durātmanā ।
    nivēditavatō dautyam
    nānumēnē vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
    But Vibheeshaṇa did not like
    Rāvaṇa, the evil one, ordering
    the death of someone who
    came to deliver a message.

    தம் ரக்ஷோதிபதிம் க்ருத்தம்
    தச்ச கார்யமுபஸ்திதம் ।
    விதித்வா சிந்தயாமாஸ
    கார்யம் கார்யவிதௌ ஸ்தித: ॥
    taṃ rakṣōdhipatiṃ kruddham
    tacca kāryamupasthitam ।
    viditvā cintayāmāsa
    kāryaṃ kāryavidhau sthitaḥ ॥
    Realizing that the lord of Rākshasas was in a rage,
    and reflecting on what would follow for certain,
    (Vibheeshaṇa) who was well grounded
    in the ways of the world,
    pondered on what could be done.

    நிஸ்சிதார்தஸ்ததஸ்ஸாம்நா
    பூஜ்யம் ஸத்ருஜிதக்ரஜம் ।
    உவாச ஹிதமத்யர்தம்
    வாக்யம் வாக்யவிஸாரத: ॥
    niṡcitārthastatassāmnā
    pūjyaṃ ṡatrujidagrajam ।
    uvāca hitamatyartham
    vākyaṃ vākyaviṡāradaḥ ॥
    Deciding upon what needed to be done,
    he, who vanquished his enemies,
    and who knew his choice of words well,
    said to his respected elder brother,
    these words that were in his best interest:

    க்ஷமஸ்வ ரோஷம் த்யஜ ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ர
    ப்ரஸீத மத்வாக்யமிதம் ஸ்ருணுஷ்வ ।
    வதம் ந குர்வந்தி பராவரஜ்ஞா
    தூதஸ்ய ஸந்தோ வஸுதாதிபேந்த்ரா: ॥
    kṣamasva rōṣaṃ tyaja rākṣasēndra
    prasīda madvākyamidaṃ ṡṛṇuṣva ।
    vadhaṃ na kurvanti parāvarajñā
    dūtasya santō vasudhādhipēndrāḥ ॥
    Please excuse me and be kind to listen
    to the significance of the words I have to say,
    O lord of Rākshasas, giving up your fury:
    The best of the rulers in this world
    who are virtuous and can tell good from bad,
    would not engage in the killing of a messenger.

    ராஜதர்மவிருத்தம் ச
    லோகவ்ருத்தேஸ்ச கர்ஹிதம் ।
    தவ சாஸத்ருஸம் வீர
    கபேரஸ்ய ப்ரமாபணம் ॥
    rājadharmaviruddhaṃ ca
    lōkavṛttēṡca garhitam ।
    tava cāsadṛṡaṃ vīra
    kapērasya pramāpaṇam ॥
    Killing this Vānara would be
    against the conventions of stately affairs;
    it would be abhorrent, considering
    even the norms of society, and also
    it would be so unbecoming of you, O Veera!

    தர்மஜ்ஞஸ்ச க்ருதஜ்ஞஸ்ச
    ராஜதர்மவிஸாரத: ।
    பராவரஜ்ஞோ பூதாநாம்
    த்வமேவ பரமார்தவித் ॥
    dharmajñaṡca kṛtajñaṡca
    rājadharmaviṡāradaḥ ।
    parāvarajñō bhūtānām
    tvamēva paramārthavit ॥
    You know Dharma and you have a sense of gratitude.
    You are a savant of the conventions of stately affairs.
    You have seen the best and the worst of creatures.
    You very well know what is at stake, in the end.

    க்ருஹ்யந்தே யதி ரோஷேண
    த்வாத்ருஸோऽபி விசக்ஷண: ।
    தத ஸ்ஸாஸ்த்ரவிபஸ்சித்த்வம்
    ஸ்ரம ஏவ ஹி கேவலம் ॥
    gṛhyantē yadi rōṣēṇa
    tvādṛṡō'pi vicakṣaṇaḥ ।
    tata ṡṡāstravipaṡcittvam
    ṡrama ēva hi kēvalam ॥
    Acquisition of expertise in Ṡastras
    would be no more than labor,
    if even learned ones like you
    are to succumb to anger.

    தஸ்மாத்ப்ரஸீத ஸத்ருக்ந
    ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ர துராஸத ।
    யுக்தாயுக்தம் விநிஸ்சித்ய
    தூததண்டோ விதீயதாம் ॥
    tasmātprasīda ṡatrughna
    rākṣasēndra durāsada ।
    yuktāyuktaṃ viniṡcitya
    dūtadaṇḍō vidhīyatām ॥
    Hence, please be kind, O best of Rākshasas,
    O slayer of the foe, whom none dare approach,
    and inflict punishment appropriate
    to a messenger, after considering
    what would be proper and what would be not.

    விபீஷணவச: ஸ்ருத்வா
    ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ।
    ரோஷேண மஹதாவிஷ்டோ
    வாக்யமுத்தரமப்ரவீத் ॥
    vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ ṡrutvā
    rāvaṇō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
    rōṣēṇa mahatāviṣṭō
    vākyamuttaramabravīt ॥
    Hearing those words of Vibheeshaṇa,
    Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas,
    who was in a great rage,
    responded with these words:

    ந பாபாநாம் வதே பாபம்
    வித்யதே ஸத்ருஸூதந ।
    தஸ்மாதேநம் வதிஷ்யாமி
    வாநரம் பாபசாரிணம் ॥
    na pāpānāṃ vadhē pāpam
    vidyatē ṡatrusūdana ।
    tasmādēnaṃ vadhiṣyāmi
    vānaraṃ pāpacāriṇam ॥
    It is no sin at all to kill a sinful one,
    O slayer of the foe! Therefore, I shall slay
    this Vānara who has committed sinful deeds!

    அதர்மமூலம் பஹுதோஷயுக்தம்
    அநார்யஜுஷ்டம் வசநம் நிஸம்ய ।
    உவாச வாக்யம் பரமார்ததத்த்வம்
    விபீஷணோ புத்திமதாம் வரிஷ்ட: ॥
    adharmamūlaṃ bahudōṣayuktam
    anāryajuṣṭaṃ vacanaṃ niṡamya ।
    uvāca vākyaṃ paramārthatattvam
    vibhīṣaṇō buddhimatāṃ variṣṭhaḥ ॥
    Hearing those words that could only license Adharma
    and were apparently wrong on many counts,
    which would be welcomed only by the base ones,
    Vibheeshaṇa, the foremost among discerning men,
    said these words that served the ultimate purpose:

    ப்ரஸீத லங்கேஸ்வர ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ர
    தர்மார்தயுக்தம் வசநம் ஸ்ருணுஷ்வ ।
    தூதாநவத்யாந் ஸமயேஷு ராஜந்
    ஸர்வேஷு ஸர்வத்ர வதந்தி ஸந்த: ॥
    prasīda laṅkēṡvara rākṣasēndra
    dharmārthayuktaṃ vacanaṃ ṡṛṇuṣva ।
    dūtānavadhyān samayēṣu rājan
    sarvēṣu sarvatra vadanti santaḥ ॥
    Please be kind, O lord of Laṅkā,
    O best of the Rākshasas,
    and listen to these words that
    conform to Dharma and further Artha.
    All good men say that a messenger
    should never be killed, O King,
    at any time and under any circumstance.

    அஸம்ஸயம் ஸத்ருரயம் ப்ரவ்ருத்த:
    க்ருதம் ஹ்யநேநாப்ரியமப்ரமேயம் ।
    ந தூதவத்யாம் ப்ரவதந்தி ஸந்தோ
    தூதஸ்ய த்ருஷ்டா பஹவோ ஹி தண்டா: ॥
    asaṃṡayaṃ ṡatrurayaṃ pravṛddhaḥ
    kṛtaṃ hyanēnāpriyamapramēyam ।
    na dūtavadhyāṃ pravadanti santō
    dūtasya dṛṣṭā bahavō hi daṇḍāḥ ॥
    ‘No doubt this enemy crossed his limits
    and the harm done by him is immeasurable;
    even then, good men do not
    call for the killing of a messenger.
    But there are many other kinds of punishment
    that can be inflicted upon a messenger!
