    raṇakarmaviṡāradau ।
    sarvabhūtamanōgrāhi
    cakraturyuddhamuttamam ॥
    The two, possessed of terrific swiftness,
    and expert in various feats of war,
    fought a splendid fight
    stealing the hearts of all creatures.

    ந மாருதிஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாத்மநோऽந்தரம் ।
    பரஸ்பரம் நிர்விஷஹௌ பபூவது:
    ஸமேத்ய தௌ தேவஸமாநவிக்ரமௌ ॥
    hanumatō vēda na rākṣasō'ntaraṃ
    na mārutistasya mahātmanō'ntaram ।
    parasparaṃ nirviṣahau babhūvatuḥ
    samētya tau dēvasamānavikramau ॥
    The Rākshasa could not discover
    a way to strike Hanumān, neither
    could the son of Vāyu, to strike that Mahātma.
    Each one of them, equal to Dēvas in prowess,
    was unable to take on the other, as they clashed.

    ஸரேஷ்வமோகேஷு ச ஸம்பதத்ஸு ।

    ஸமாதிஸம்யோகஸமாஹிதாத்மா ॥
    tatastu lakṣyē sa vihanyamānē
    ṡarēṣvamōghēṣu ca saṃpatatsu ।
    jagāma cintāṃ mahatīṃ mahātmā
    samādhisaṃyōgasamāhitātmā ॥
    When he saw that his unfailing arrows
    were falling off, failing to hit the target,
    that Mahātma, who had a steady mind and
    was good at aiming and striking the target,
    did some serious thinking.

    சகார தஸ்மிந் ஹரிவீரமுக்யே ।

    கதம் நிகச்சேதிதி நிக்ரஹார்தம் ॥
    tatō matiṃ rākṣasarājasūnuḥ
    cakāra tasmin harivīramukhyē ।
    avadhyatāṃ tasya kapēssamīkṣya
    kathaṃ nigacchēditi nigrahārtham ॥
    Realizing that it was not
    possible to kill the Vānara,
    the son of the Rākshasa King thought of
    what best he could do to subdue and
    take that chief of the Vānara Veeras captive.

    ஸோऽஸ்த்ரமஸ்த்ரவிதாம் வர: ।
    ஸம்ததே ஸுமஹாதேஜா:

    tataḥ paitāmahaṃ vīraḥ
    sō'stramastravidāṃ varaḥ ।
    saṃdadhē sumahātējāḥ
    taṃ haripravaraṃ prati ॥
    Then that Veera of immense power,
    who was the best among the savants of Astras,
    launched an Astra presided by the Grandsire,
    towards the best of the Vānara Veeras.

    தமஸ்த்ரேணாஸ்த்ரதத்த்வவித் ।
    நிஜக்ராஹ மஹாபாஹு:
    மாருதாத்மஜமிந்த்ரஜித் ॥
    avadhyō'yamiti jñātvā
    tamastrēṇāstratattvavit ।
    nijagrāha mahābāhuḥ
    mārutātmajamindrajit ॥
    Realizing that he cannot be killed,
    Indrajit of mighty arm, a savant of Astras,
    restrained the son of Vāyu with an Astra. This Ṡlōka which conveys, in brief, the same meaning as the previous two Ṡlōkas, 35 and 36, could be a case of poetic repetition or could be due to the process of compilation that called for retaining slight variations from two different sources of palm leaves.

    ராக்ஷஸேந ஸ வாநர: ।
    அபவந்நிர்விசேஷ்டஸ்ச

    tēna baddhastatō'strēṇa
    rākṣasēna sa vānaraḥ ।
    abhavannirvicēṣṭaṡca
    papāta sa mahītalē ॥
    Thus bound by the Astra of that Rākshasa,
    the Vānara became motionless
    and fell down on the ground.

    5.48.39 ஈ ததோऽத புத்த்வா ஸ ததஸ்த்ரபந்தம்
    ப்ரபோ: ப்ரபாவாத்விகதாத்மவேக: ।

    விசிந்தயாமாஸ ஹரிப்ரவீர: ॥
    tatō'tha buddhvā sa tadastrabandham
    prabhōḥ prabhāvādvigatātmavēgaḥ ।
    pitāmahānugrahamātmanaṡca
    vicintayāmāsa haripravīraḥ ॥
    Realizing that he was bound by that Astra
    and that his speed was lost because of the
    power of that Lord (the Grandsire),
    that best among the Vānara Veeras thought of
    the special favor the Grandsire had bestowed on him.

    tatassvāyambuvairmantraiḥ
    brahmāstramabhimantritam ।
    hanumāṃṡcintayāmāsa
    varadānaṃ pitāmahāt ॥
    Realizing that the power of Self-Born
    had been invoked with the appropriate Mantras
    when that Astra of Brahma was cast upon him,
    Hanumān remembered the boon
    granted to him by the Grandsire.

    5.48.41 ஈ ந மேऽஸ்த்ரபந்தஸ்ய ச ஸக்திரஸ்தி
    விமோக்ஷணே லோககுரோ: ப்ரபாவாத் ।
    இத்யேவ மத்வா விஹிதோऽஸ்த்ரபந்தோ
    மயாத்மயோநேரநுவர்திதவ்ய: ॥
    na mē'strabandhasya ca ṡaktirasti
    vimōkṣaṇē lōkagurōḥ prabhāvāt ।
    ityēva matvā vihitō'strabandhō
    mayātmayōnēranuvartitavyaḥ ॥
    I do not have the ability to free myself
    from the bond of this Astra because of
    the power of the Eldest of the Lōkas (Brahma).
    This I have to acknowledge and I have
    no option but to be bound by this
    Astra of Self-Born, cast by the enemy.

    பிதாமஹாஜ்ஞாமநுவர்ததே ஸ்ம ॥
    sa vīryamastrasya kapirvicārya
    pitāmahānugrahamātmanaṡca ।
    vimōkṣaṡaktiṃ paricintayitvā
    pitāmahājñāmanuvartatē sma ॥
    Realizing the power of the Astra,
    and keeping in mind how he
    could (eventually) free himself from it
    using the special favor that
    the Grandsire had bestowed on him,
    the Vānara allowed himself to be bound by the
    commandment of the Grandsire (for the time being).

    bhayaṃ mama na jāyatē ।

    I am bound by the Astra, but
    it is no cause of concern for me,
    as I am being protected by
    the Grandsire, Mahēndra and the Wind-god.

    மஹந்மே குணதர்ஸநம் ।

    grahaṇē cāpi rakṣōbhiḥ
    mahanmē guṇadarṡanam ।
    rākṣasēndrēṇa saṃvādaḥ
    tasmādgṛhṇantu māṃ parē ॥
    (In fact), I can see a great advantage
    in being captured by the Rākshasas.
    I might talk to the King of Rākshasas.
    So let the enemy capture me.

    ஸமீக்ஷ்யகாரீ விநிவ்ருத்தசேஷ்ட: ।

    நநாத தைஸ்தை: பரிபர்த்ஸ்யமாந: ॥
    sa niṡcitārthaḥ paravīrahantā
    samīkṣyakārī vinivṛttacēṣṭaḥ ।
    paraiḥ prasahyābhigatairnigṛhya
    nanāda taistai: paribhartsyamānaḥ ॥
    Having thus resolved,
    he, the slayer of enemy Veeras,
    who gauged the situation well, lay motionless.
    He let off a loud cry,
    when the enemy approached and
    forcefully restrained him,
    even as everyone kept threatening him.

    5.48.46 ஈ ததஸ்தம் ராக்ஷஸா த்ருஷ்ட்வா
    நிர்விசேஷ்டமரிம்தமம் ।

    த்ருமசீரைஸ்ச ஸம்ஹதை: ॥
    tatastaṃ rākṣasā dṛṣṭvā
    nirvicēṣṭamariṃdamam ।
    babandhuṡṡaṇavalkaiṡca
    drumacīraiṡca saṃhataiḥ ॥
    When the Rakshasas found that subduer of foe
    lying down there with no reaction whatsoever,
    they tied him with hempen rope and twisted tree-bark.

    5.48.47 ஈ ஸ ரோசயாமாஸ பரைஸ்ச பந்தநம்
    ப்ரஸஹ்ய வீரைரபிநிக்ரஹம் ச ।
    கௌதூஹலாந்மாம் யதி ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரோ
    த்ரஷ்டும் வ்யவஸ்யேதிதி நிஸ்சிதார்த: ॥
    sa rōcayāmāsa paraiṡca bandhanam
    prasahya vīrairabhinigrahaṃ ca ।
    kautūhalānmāṃ yadi rākṣasēndrō
    draṣṭuṃ vyavasyēditi niṡcitārthaḥ ॥
    He actually liked getting captured by the enemy
    and being restrained by the Veeras forcibly
    because he felt certain that the Lord of Rākshasas
    would give audience to him out of curiosity.

    5.48.48 ஈ ஸ பத்தஸ்தேந வல்கேந
    விமுக்தோऽஸ்த்ரேண வீர்யவாந் ।
    அஸ்த்ரபந்த: ஸ சாந்யம் ஹி
    ந பந்தமநுவர்ததே ॥
    sa baddhastēna valkēna
    vimuktō'strēṇa vīryavān ।
    astrabandhaḥ sa cānyaṃ hi
    na bandhamanuvartatē ॥
    The valorous one, being tied by the hempen cord,
    became free of the Astra,
    for the bond of Astra becomes ineffective
    when another bond is imposed upon it.

    5.48.49 ஈ அதேந்த்ரஜித்து த்ருமசீரபத்தம்
    விசார்ய வீர: கபிஸத்தமம் தம் ।
    விமுக்தமஸ்த்ரேண ஜகாம சிந்தாம்
    நாந்யேந பத்தோ ஹ்யநுவர்ததேऽஸ்த்ரம் ॥
    athēndrajittu drumacīrabaddham
    vicārya vīraḥ kapisattamaṃ tam ।
    vimuktamastrēṇa jagāma cintām
    nānyēna baddhō hyanuvartatē'stram ॥
    Then Indrajit, the Veera,
    knowing that the Astra would become ineffective
    should another bond be imposed upon it,
    realized that the eminent Vānara,
    who was bound by the ropes of tree bark,
    became free from the hold of the Astra.

    5.48.50 ஈ அஹோ மஹத்கர்ம க்ருதம் நிரர்தகம்கம்
    ந ராக்ஷஸைர்மந்த்ரகதிர்விம்ருஷ்டா ।
    புநஸ்ச மந்த்ரே விஹதேऽஸ்த்ரமந்யத்
    ப்ரவர்ததே ஸம்ஸயிதா ஸ்ஸ்மஸர்வே ॥
    ahō mahatkarma kṛtaṃ nirarthakamkam
    na rākṣasairmantragatirvimṛṣṭā ।
    punaṡca mantrē vihatē'stramanyat
    pravartatē saṃṡayitā ssmasarvē ॥
    Alas! A great accomplishment has been
    rendered futile; the Rākshasas did not
    understand how the Mantra works.
    Once rendered futile, a Mantra will not work again;
    we are all in a bind now, what to do?

    நாத்மாநமவபுத்யத ।
    க்ருஷ்யமாணஸ்து ரக்ஷோபி:

    astrēṇa hanumānmuktō
    nātmānamavabudhyata ।
    kṛṣyamāṇastu rakṣōbhiḥ
    taiṡca bandhairnipīḍitaḥ ॥
    However, Hanumān, dragged by
    the Rākshasas and hurt by the tight bonds,
    did not seem to know that
    he had became free from the bond of the Astra.

    ராக்ஷஸை: காஷ்டமுஷ்டிபி: ।

    ப்ராக்ருஷ்யத ஸ வாநர: ॥
    hanyamānastataḥ krūrai
    rākṣasaiḥ kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ ।
    samīpaṃ rākṣasēndrasya
    prākṛṣyata sa vānaraḥ ॥
    The Vānara was beaten with sticks and fists
    and dragged by those ruthless Rākshasas
    to the presence of their lord.

    5.48.53 ஈ அதேந்த்ரஜித்தம் ப்ரஸமீக்ஷ்ய முக்தம்
    அஸ்த்ரேண பத்தம் த்ருமசீரஸூத்ரை: ।
    ந்யதர்ஸயத்தத்ர மஹாபலம் தம்
    ஹரிப்ரவீரம் ஸகணாய ராஜ்ஞே ॥
    athēndrajittaṃ prasamīkṣya muktam
    astrēṇa baddhaṃ drumacīrasūtraiḥ ।
    nyadarṡayattatra mahābalaṃ taṃ
    haripravīraṃ sagaṇāya rājñē ॥
    Then Indrajit showed that eminent Vānara,
    a Veera of immense strength,
    to the King and his Court
    knowing well that he was free
    from the bond of the Astra and was held
    only by the strands of tree bark.

    5.48.54 ஈ தம் மத்தமிவ மாதங்கம்
    பத்தம் கபிவரோத்தமம் ।
    ராக்ஷஸா ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ராய

    taṃ mattamiva mātaṅgam
    baddhaṃ kapivarōttamam ।
    rākṣasā rākṣasēndrāya
    rāvaṇāya nyavēdayan ॥
    The Rākshasas showed that best of the best of Vānaras
    who looked like an elephant in rut kept under harness
    to Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas.

    கிம் கார்யம் கோ வ்யபாஸ்ரய: ।

    kō'yaṃ kasya kutōvātra
    kiṃ kāryaṃ kō vyapāṡrayaḥ ।
    iti rākṣasavīrāṇām
    tatra sañjajñirē kathāḥ ॥
    The Rakshasa Veeras present there
    wondered asking each other:
    Who is he? Whom does he belong to?
    Where did he come from and for what purpose?
    Who is behind him?

    பக்ஷ்யதாமிதி சாபரே ।

    hanyatāṃ dahyatāṃ vāpi
    bhakṣyatāmiti cāparē ।
    rākṣasāstatra saṅkruddhāḥ
    parasparamathābruvan ॥
    The enraged Rākshasas there said to each other:
    He should be killed, burnt and eaten up!

    ஸ தத்ர ரக்ஷோதிபபாதமூலே ।

    க்ருஹம் மஹாரத்நவிபூஷிதம் ச ॥
    atītya mārgaṃ sahasā mahātmā
    sa tatra rakṣōdhipapādamūlē ।
    dadarṡa rājñaḥ paricāravṛddhān
    gṛhaṃ mahāratnavibhūṣitaṃ ca ॥
    Quickly covering the distance, the Mahātma
    saw the King’s house that was studded with gems
    and elderly attendants seated at
    the feet of the lord of Rākshasas.

    5.48.58 ஈ ஸ ததர்ஸ மஹாதேஜா
    ராவண: கபிஸத்தமம் ।
    ரக்ஷோபிர்விக்ருதாகாரை:

    sa dadarṡa mahātējā
    rāvaṇaḥ kapisattamam ।
    rakṣōbhirvikṛtākāraiḥ
    kṛṣyamāṇamitastataḥ ॥
    The extremely powerful Rāvaṇa
    then saw that eminent Vānara
    being dragged haphazardly
    by the Rākshasas of ugly shape and form.

    ததர்ஸ கபிஸத்தம: ।
    தேஜோபலஸமாயுக்தம்

    rākṣasādhipatiṃ cāpi
    dadarṡa kapisattamaḥ ।
    tējōbalasamāyuktam
    tapantamiva bhāskaram ॥
    The eminent Vānara also saw
    the lord of Rākshasas endowed with
    power and strength and blazing like the sun.

    5.48.60 ஈ ஸரோஷஸம்வர்திததாம்ரத்ருஷ்டி:
    தஸாநநஸ்தம் கபிமந்வவேக்ஷ்ய ।

    ஸமாதிஸத்தம் ப்ரதி மந்த்ரிமுக்யாந் ॥
    sarōṣasamvartitatāmradṛṣṭiḥ
    daṡānanastaṃ kapimanvavēkṣya ।
    athōpaviṣṭān kulaṡīlavṛddhān
    samādiṡattaṃ prati mantrimukhyān ॥
    With his copper-red eyes
    rolling in resentment and anger,
    the ten-faced looked at the Vānara.
    He ordered his chief ministers,
    the elders of his clan of matured character
    that were seated about him, to question him.

    5.48.61 ஈ யதாக்ரமம் தைஸ்ஸ கபிர்விப்ருஷ்ட:
    கார்யார்தமர்தஸ்ய ச மூலமாதௌ ।
    நிவேதயாமாஸ ஹரீஸ்வரஸ்ய
    தூத: ஸகாஸாதஹமாகதோऽஸ்மி ॥
    yathākramaṃ taissa kapirvipṛṣṭaḥ
    kāryārthamarthasya ca mūlamādau ।
    nivēdayāmāsa harīṡvarasya
    dūtaḥ sakāṡādahamāgatō'smi ॥
    Questioned by them in successive order
    about the purpose of his coming
    and the main reason behind it,
    the Vānara said at first, ‘I have come here
    sent by the lord of Vānaras, as his envoy’.
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸுந்தரகாண்டே அஷ்டசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ॥
    Thus concludes the forty eighth Sarga
    in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
