Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 42
In this Sarga, the Rākshasis, shaken by the destruction caused by Hanumān, asks Seetā who he is and Seetā pretends ignorance. A few of them go to Rāvaṇa and tell about the Vānara, the destruction and his sparing the Ṡiṃṡupa tree where Seetā is seated. The enraged Rāvaṇa then sends eighty thousand Kiṅkaras to contain the Vānara. They go to the Aṡōka Vana and attack Hanumān. Hanumān declares who he is. Taking a Parigha he kills all of them. A few Rākshasas escape and report the same to Rāvaṇa. The dismayed Rāvaṇa then sends the son of Prahasta to fight with Hanumān.

babhūvustrāsasambhrāntāḥ
sarvē laṅkānivāsinaḥ ॥
The residents of Laṅkā were
taken by fear and anxiety
from the clamor of the birds and
the sound of the breaking trees.

vinēdurmṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ।
rakṣasāṃ ca nimittāni
krūrāṇi pratipēdirē ॥
Shaken by fear, the birds and beasts fled screaming;
and bad omens were seen by Rākshasas.

தத்வநம் தத்ருஸுர்பக்நம்

rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ ।
tadvanaṃ dadṛṡurbhagnam
taṃ ca vīraṃ mahākapim ॥
Woken up from their slumber,
the Rākshasis of ugly faces
saw that Vana destroyed,
and also the valorous mighty Vānara.

mahāsattvō mahābalaḥ ।
cakāra sumahadrūpam
rākṣasīnāṃ bhayāvaham ॥
Seeing them, he of mighty arm,
great power and immense strength,
grew to a gigantic size,
terrifying those Rākshasis.

atikāyaṃ mahābalam ।
rākṣasyō vānaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
papracchurjanakātmajām ॥
Seeing that Vānara of immense strength,
his huge body that resembled a mountain,
the Rākshasis questioned the daughter of Janaka:

கிம் நிமித்தமிஹாகத: ।

kiṃ nimittamihāgataḥ ।
kathaṃ tvayā sahānēna
saṃvādaḥ kṛta ityuta ॥
Who is he? Whose is he?
Where did he come from?
Why did he come here?
What did he talk to you?

மா பூத்தே ஸுபகே பயம் ।
ஸம்வாதமஸிதாபாங்கே

ācakṣva nō viṡālākṣi
mā bhūttē subhagē bhayam ।
saṃvādamasitāpāṅgē
tvayā kiṃ kṛtavānayam ॥
O you of wide eyes! Tell us!
Do not be scared, O lovely one!
What did he say to you, O black-eyed beauty?

ஸீதா ஸர்வாங்கஸுந்தரீ ॥

That lady, whose every limb was lovely,
who was firmly devoted to her husband said:

விஜ்ஞாநே மம கா கதி: ।

அஹிரேவ ஹ்யஹே: பாதாந்
விஜாநாதி ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
rakṣasāṃ bhīmarūpāṇām
vijñānē mama kā gatiḥ ।
yūyamēvābhijānīta
yō'yaṃ yadvā kariṣyati ।
ahirēva hyahēḥ pādān
vijānāti na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
I am not capable of knowing what Rākshasas,
who are terrifying even to look at, do!
Only you can say who he is and what he will do!
Only a snake would know the
tracks of snakes for sure, is it not?

நைநம் ஜாநாமி கோந்வஹம் ।
வேத்மி ராக்ஷஸமேவைநம்

nainaṃ jānāmi kōnvaham ।
vēdmi rākṣasamēvainam
kāmarūpiṇamāgatam ॥
I am also scared of him.
I do not know who he is.
I only think that he must be a
Rākshasa who came in a disguise.

ராக்ஷஸ்யோ வித்ருதா திஸ: ।

ராவணாய நிவேதிதும் ॥
vaidēhyā vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
rākṣasyō vidrutā diṡaḥ ।
sthitāḥ kāṡcidgatāḥ kāṡcit
rāvaṇāya nivēditum ॥
Hearing those words of Vaidēhi,
the Rākshasis fled in every direction;
a few stayed back there and
a few went to report to Rāvaṇa.

ராக்ஷஸ்யோ விக்ருதாநநா: ।
விரூபம் வாநரம் பீமம்

rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ ।
virūpaṃ vānaraṃ bhīmam
ākhyātumupacakramuḥ ॥
Going to Rāvaṇa, the Rākshasis of ugly faces
began to tell about the ugly and frightening Vānara.

ராஜந்பீமவபு: கபி: ।
ஸீதயா க்ருதஸம்வாத:

rājanbhīmavapuḥ kapiḥ ।
sītayā kṛtasaṃvādaḥ
tiṣṭhatyamitavikramaḥ ॥
O King! A Vānara of
frightening body and limitless prowess,
who engaged Seetā in a conversation,
is now in the Aṡōka Vana!

ஹரிம் ஹரிணலோசநா ।
அஸ்மாபிர்பஹுதா ப்ருஷ்டா

na ca taṃ jānakī sītā
hariṃ hariṇalōcanā ।
asmābhirbahudhā pṛṣṭā
nivēdayitumicchati ॥
The fawn-eyed Seetā, daughter of Janaka,
would not tell anything about that Vānara,
even though we questioned her in many ways.

தூதோ வைஸ்ரவணஸ்ய வா ।
ப்ரேஷிதோ வாபி ராமேண

vāsavasya bhavēddūtō
dūtō vaiṡravaṇasya vā ।
prēṣitō vāpi rāmēṇa
sītānvēṣaṇakāṅkṣayā ॥
He could be an envoy of Vāsava,
or an envoy of Vaiṡravaṇa or
he could have been sent by
Rāma in search of Seetā.

யத்தத்தவ மநோஹரம் ।
நாநாம்ருககணாகீர்ணம்

tēna tvadbhutarūpēṇa
yattattava manōharam ।
nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam
pramṛṣṭaṃ pramadāvanam ॥
The women’s pleasance of yours
which is filled with many
a kind of bird and beast
that charms everyone’s heart
is completely ruined by
him of marvelous appearance.

யஸ்தேந ந விநாஸித: ।
யத்ர ஸா ஜாநகீ ஸீதா

na tatra kaṡciduddēṡō
yastēna na vināṡitaḥ ।
yatra sā jānakī sītā
sa tēna na vināṡitaḥ ॥
There is no area that is
left undestroyed by him,
except the place where Seetā,
the daughter of Janaka, is.

ஸ்ரமாத்வா நோபலப்யதே ।
அதவா கஸ்ஸ்ரமஸ்தஸ்ய
ஸைவ தேநாபிரக்ஷிதா ॥
jānakīrakṣaṇārthaṃ vā
ṡramādvā nōpalabhyatē ।
athavā kaṡṡramastasya
saiva tēnābhirakṣitā ॥
It is not clear whether it is because
he wanted to save Seetā or because he is tired;
nay, how can he be exhausted,
he certainly meant to save Seetā!

யம் ஸீதா ஸ்வயமாஸ்திதா ।
ப்ரவ்ருத்தஸ்ஸிம்ஸுபாவ்ருக்ஷ:
ஸ ச தேநாபிரக்ஷித: ॥
cārupallavapuṣpāḍhyam
yaṃ sītā svayamāsthitā ।
pravṛddhaṡṡiṃṡupāvṛkṣaḥ
sa ca tēnābhirakṣitaḥ ॥
The fully grown Ṡiṃṡupa tree, which is
full of beautiful shoots and flowers
under which Seetā sits, is spared by him.

5.42.20 ஈ தஸ்யோக்ரரூபஸ்யோக்ரம் த்வம்
தண்டமாஜ்ஞாதுமர்ஹஸி ।

tasyōgrarūpasyōgraṃ tvam
daṇḍamājñātumarhasi ।
sītā sambhāṣitā yēna
tadvanaṃ ca vināṡitam ॥
You should order severe punishment
for him, the fierce looking one,
who talked to Seetā and ruined the Vana.

தவ ரக்ஷோகணேஸ்வர ।
கஸ்ஸீதாமபிபாஷேத

manaḥ parigṛhītāṃ tām
tava rakṣōgaṇēṡvara ।
kassītāmabhibhāṣēta
yō na syāttyaktajīvitaḥ ॥
Who would, that has not all but given up his life,
dare speak to Seetā, O lord of Rākshasa race,
who, in your mind, is all but taken as your wife?

ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ।
ஹுதாக்நிரிவ ஜஜ்வால

rākṣasīnāṃ vacaṡtrutvā
rāvaṇō rākṣasēṡvaraḥ ।
hutāgniriva jajvāla
kōpasaṃvartitēkṣaṇaḥ ॥
On hearing those words of the Rākshasis,
Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas,
blazed like fire into which oblations are poured,
rolling his eyes in rage.

ப்ராபதந்நாஸ்ரபிந்தவ: ।

tasya kruddhasya nētrābhyām
prāpatannāsrabindavaḥ ।
dīptābhyāmiva dīpābhyām
sārciṣassnēhabindavaḥ ॥
As he was that outraged,
blazing drops of tears fell down from his eyes
like drops of burning oil from torches.

கிங்கராந்நாம ராக்ஷஸாந் ।

தேஷாமஸீதிஸாஹஸ்ரம்
கிங்கராணாம் தரஸ்விநாம் ॥
ātmanassadṛṡānṡūrān
kiṅkarānnāma rākṣasān ।
vyādidēṡa mahātējā
nigrahārthaṃ hanūmataḥ ।
tēṣāmaṡītisāhasram
kiṅkarāṇāṃ tarasvinām ॥
Then he of immense power
ordered Rākshasas known as Kiṅkaras,
eighty thousands of them, who were
powerful and as valorous as himself,
to contain Hanumān.
