Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 41
In this Sarga, after taking leave from Seetā, Hanumān thinks that he should assess the strength of the enemy vis-à-vis their own before going back, if he is to follow the command of Sugreeva to the fullest, for, he reasons, that a capable person should always do more than what is expected of him. He then plans to force a fight between himself and the Rākshasas. He thinks of destroying the Aṡōka Vana and hence prompt Rāvaṇa to send his troops to attack him.

the fourth Upāya, going beyond the first three.
The first three Upāyas are Sāma, Dana and Bhēda.
The fourth one is Daṇḍa.

Sāma would be of no effect on Rākshasas.
Dāna is not suitable in dealing with
people who are plump with riches.
People overweening with strength
can hardly be won by Bhēda.

Nothing but resorting to the display of prowess
will work in a situation like this.
The Rākshasas may soften if
some of the best of their warriors
are killed in a fight.

Once assigned to a task,

is the one who is truly fit for any task.

No matter how small a task is,
there is always more than one way to accomplish it.
Only one who can think of multiple means
to accomplish an end is the one who is
truly capable of accomplishing anything.

abode of the lord of Vānaras,

the orders given by my lord to the fullest.

I wonder how a combat between
me and the Rākshasas can be forced, easily?
How could the Ten-faced get a sense of
the extent of my strength in a combat, easily?

Facing the Ten-faced along with
his ministers, followers and army in a combat,
I shall know how he operates
and what his strength is, and then
I can go back from here happily!

This excellent Vana, full of a variety trees and vines,
comparable to the Nandana gardens (of Kubēra),
which delights the eye and captivates the hearts
belongs to that cruel one.

provoke the rage of the Ten-necked.

tatō mahadyuddhamidaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥
Then he will order a huge contingent
with its full complement of cavalry,
chariot and elephant forces armed with
Triṡulas and Paṭṭisas to attack me.
And then there will ensue a great battle.

Facing those Rākshasas of terrible prowess,
I shall display my own prowess
that no one can stand against and
destroy that army sent by Rāvaṇa,
before I can head back to the
abode of the lord of Vānaras happily.

With its many kinds of birds screeching,
its water reservoirs breached,
reddish tender shoots of the
trees and creepers wilting,
that Vana had no allure left,
as if it was hit by a forest fire.
With the trellises bent out of shape,
the creepers looked like women in distress.

its great serpents and wild beasts let loose and
the houses made of stone and others shattered
that great Vana lay completely disfigured.

that wooded area, a women’s pleasance,
which served as a resort for the women of Rāvaṇa
with creepers that had Aṡōka trees for their trellises,
had become a trellis for the wilting creepers.

The great Vānara, having thus caused
terrible damage to the ego of
that mighty ruler of the earth,
settled himself on the archway,
his power radiating all around him,
eager to fight, all by himself,
however many mighty strong ones that might turn up.

vanaṃ nētramanaḥkāntam
nānādrumalatāyutam ॥
This excellent Vana, full of a variety trees and vines,
comparable to the Nandana gardens (of Kubēra),
which delights the eye and captivates the hearts
belongs to that cruel one.

kariṣyati daṡānanaḥ ॥
I will destroy this (Vana)
like fire does dry woods.
Its destruction will (certainly)
provoke the rage of the Ten-necked.

tatō mahatsāṡvamahārathadvipaṃ
balaṃ samādēkṣyati rākṣasādhipaḥ ।
triṡūlakālāyasapaṭṭisāyudhaṃ
tatō mahadyuddhamidaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥
Then he will order a huge contingent
with its full complement of cavalry,
chariot and elephant forces armed with
Triṡulas and Paṭṭisas to attack me.
And then there will ensue a great battle.

sukhaṃ gamiṣyāmi kapīṡvarālayam ॥
Facing those Rākshasas of terrible prowess,
I shall display my own prowess
that no one can stand against and
destroy that army sent by Rāvaṇa,
before I can head back to the
abode of the lord of Vānaras happily.

the great speed of his thighs.

Hanumān, the Veera, then
laid waste that women’s pleasance,
crowded with birds drunk with love
and filled with trees and creepers of all kinds.

that pleasance became the most unpleasing sight.

na babhau tadvanaṃ tatra
dāvānalahataṃ yathā ।
vyākulāvaraṇā rējuḥ
vihvalā iva tā latāḥ ॥
With its many kinds of birds screeching,
its water reservoirs breached,
reddish tender shoots of the
trees and creepers wilting,
that Vana had no allure left,
as if it was hit by a forest fire.
With the trellises bent out of shape,
the creepers looked like women in distress.

praṇaṣṭarūpaṃ tadabhūnmahadvanam ॥
With its arbors and galleries destroyed,
its great serpents and wild beasts let loose and
the houses made of stone and others shattered
that great Vana lay completely disfigured.

With the impact of the force of that Vānara,
that wooded area, a women’s pleasance,
which served as a resort for the women of Rāvaṇa
with creepers that had Aṡōka trees for their trellises,
had become a trellis for the wilting creepers.

sa tasya kṛtvā jagatīpatērmahān
mahadvyalīkaṃ manasō mahātmanaḥ ।
yuyutsurēkō bahubhirmahābalaiḥ
ṡriyā jvalaṃstōraṇamāsthitaḥ kapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara, having thus caused
terrible damage to the ego of
that mighty ruler of the earth,
settled himself on the archway,
his power radiating all around him,
eager to fight, all by himself,
however many mighty strong ones that might turn up.
