Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 35
In this Sarga, Seetā asks Hanumān to tell about the distinguishing marks of Rāma and how he came to meet Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, so that she can trust him to be who he says he is.
Hanumān then describes to her in detail Rāma’s physique and other distinguishing marks and characteristics and how Rāma came to meet Sugreeva, how a friendship developed between the two, how Rāma killed Vali and established Sugreeva as the king, how Sugreeva sent the Vānaras in search of her, how the Vānaras led by Aṅgada lost their way on the Vindhya mountain, how Sampāti told them that she is Rāvaṇa’s house, how the Vānaras came to the northern shore of the ocean and how Hanumān jumped over the ocean to reach Laṅkā and finally got to see her in person.
Hanumān assures her that Rāma would come soon and take her back after killing Rāvaṇa and all his kith and kin.

On hearing the story of Rāma
from that bull among Vānaras,
Vaidēhi said these conciliatory words

the distinctive marks by which
Rāma and Lakshmaṇa may be known,
hearing which sorrow may not
find its way again into my heart.

Thus asked by Vaidēhi, Hanumān, son of Vāyu,
began to tell about Rāma, in all detail:

O Vaidēhi of lotus-petal eyes!
What can I be happier about?
It is only my good fortune that
you ask me to describe the physique of
your husband and the looks of Lakshmaṇa,
even though you know them all too well.

O daughter of Janaka!
Rāma’s eyes are like lotus petals.
He ravishes the hearts of every creature.
He is, by birth, stunningly charming
and amazingly skillful.

He is comparable
to the sun in radiance,
to the earth in forbearance,
to Bṛhaspati in intellect and
to Vāsava in renown.

rakṣitā jīvalōkasya
svajanasyābhirakṣitā ।
rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya
dharmasya ca parantapaḥ ॥
He, the scorcher of foe,
is the protector of all the creatures
of the world, and especially his people.
He zealously guards his
integrity and also Dharma.

cāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā ।
maryādānāṃ ca lōkasya
kartā kārayitā ca saḥ ॥
O charming lady! He is
the protector of the people
of all four Varṇas in this world.
He sets the order in the world
and ensures that it is followed.

brahmacaryavratē sthitaḥ ।

Blazing with splendor, he is the
object of everyone’s utmost admiration.
He always keeps the big picture in mind.
He is always at the service of good people and
understands the nature and value of their deeds.

brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā ।
ṡrutavānṡīlasampannō
vinītaṡca parantapaḥ ॥
He is well-trained in statecraft.
He treats Brāhmaṇas with regard.
He is learned in Ṡāstras.
He is endowed with a great character.
He is humble. He torments his foe.

வேதவித்பிஸ்ஸுபூஜித: ।
தநுர்வேதே ச வேதேஷு

vēdavidbhissupūjitaḥ ।
dhanurvēdē ca vēdēṣu
vēdāṅgēṣu ca niṣṭhitaḥ ॥
He is trained in Yajurvēda.
He is well respected by those who know the Vēdas.
The science of archery and all the Vēdas and
auxiliary sciences are of his constant study.

5.35.15 ஈ விபுலாம்ஸோ மஹாபாஹு:
கம்புக்ரீவஸ்ஸுபாநந: ।
கூடஜத்ருஸ்ஸுதாம்ராக்ஷோ

vipulāṃsō mahābāhuḥ
kambugrīvaṡṡubhānanaḥ ।
gūḍhajatrussutāmrākṣō
rāmō dēvi janaiṡṡrutaḥ ॥
O Dēvi! He has broad shoulders and mighty arms.
His neck is like a conch shell
and his face is lovely.
The dense muscle of his chest
makes his rib cage undetectable.
His eyes are copper (honey) red.
There is no one who has not heard of Rāma.

dundubhisvananirghōṣa
snigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān ।
sama ssamavibhaktāṅgō
varṇaṃ ṡyāmaṃ samāṡritaḥ ॥
His voice booms like kettle drum.
He has a glowing blackish complexion.
He is valorous and his limbs are symmetrical.

த்ரிஸமஸ்த்ரிஷு சோந்நத: ।

கம்பீரஸ்த்ரிஷு நித்யஸ: ॥
tristhirastripralambaṡca
trisamastriṣu cōnnataḥ ।
tritāmrastriṣu ca snigdhō
gambhīrastriṣu nityaṡaḥ ॥
Three are sturdy, three are long,
three are symmetrical, three are raised,
three are reddish, three are silky
and three are imposing in him. Ṡlōkas 17 through 20 refer to the features defined in Sāmudrika Sastra (the science of bodily features).
Ṡlōka 17
The sturdy three refer to chest, wrist and fist, symbols of royalty - uraṡca maṇibandhaṡca muṣṭiṡca nṛpatē sthirāḥ
The long three refer to eyebrows, arms, testicles, symbols of opulence - pralaṃmabāyasya sa dhanī trayō bhrūmuṣkabāhavaḥ
The symmetrical three refer to hair, testicles and shanks, also symbols of royalty - kēṡāgraṃ vṛṣaṇaṃ jānu samāyasya sa bhūpatiḥ
The raised three refer to chest, navel and lower stomach, also symbols of royalty - nābhyantaḥkukṣivakṣōbhirunnataḥ kṣitipō bhavēt
The reddish three refer to the corners of the eye, nails and the pairs of palms and feet, symbolic of one who is born to enjoy life - nētrāntanakhapāṇyaṅghritalaistāmraiḥ sukhī bhavēt
The silky three refer to lines on the feet, hair, scrotum, symbolic of one who is born to be opulent - snigdhā bhavanti vai yēṣāṃ pādarēkhāḥ ṡirōruhāḥ tathā liṅgamaṇistēṣāṃ mahābhāgyaṃ vinirdiṡēt
The imposing three refer to voice, gait and navel, symbolic of one who commands immediate respect - svarē gatau ca nābhau ca gambhīrastriṣuṡasyatē

The three places in which his figure was flat are breasts, nipples and lines (where wrinkles develop in old age, such as on stomach, neck and forehead) - pīnōpacitairnimnaiḥkṣitipatayaḥ
cūcukaiḥstanaiḥ sukhinaḥ
snigdhānimnārēkhādhanināṃ
tadvyatyayēna nissvānām
The four parts in which his body was not oversized are neck, penis, back and shanks -
grīvā prajananaṃ pṛṣṭhaṃ hrasvaṃ jaṅaghā ca pūjyatē
Three swirls in the hair on the head indicate that the person can manage and lead the entire earth - āvarta trayaruciraṃ yasya ṡiraḥ sa kṣitibhṛtāṃ nētā
The number of lines (folds) at the base of the thumb indicate the number of Vēdas in which the person becomes an expert - mūlē'ṅguṣṭhasya vēdānāṃ catasrastisra ēva vā ēkā dvē vā yathāyōgaṃ rēkhā jñēyā dvijanmanām
The number of lines (folds) on the forehead indicate the longevity of a person; one with a single line lives for twenty years, one with two lines lives for sixty years, one with three lines lives for hundred years and one with four lives for two hundred years -
lalāṭē yasya dṛṡyantē catustridvēkarēkhikāḥ ṡatadvayaṃ ṡataṃ ṣaṣṭhistasyāyurviṃṡatistathā
One who has lines underneath the feet or in the palm in the shapes of Vajra, flag post, conch shell or a goad would become a lord of people - yasya pādatalē vajradhvajaṡaṅkhāṅkuṡōpamāḥ rēkhāḥ samyak prakāṡantē manujēndraṃ tamādiṡēt pāṇau catastō rēkhāṡca yasya tiṣṭhantyabhaṅgurāḥ
Kishku is a measure of twenty four inches. Rāma was four Kishkus tall, or ninety six inches tall. One who is four Kishkus tall is considered an equal of Devas - ṣaṇṇavatyaṅgulōtsēdhō yaḥ pumān sa divaukasaḥ
The symmetrical four are the arms, thighs, knees and shanks - bāhujānūrujaṅghāṡca catvāryatha samāni ca
Ṡlōka 19
A person whose fourteen body parts that come in pairs - eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, shanks, testicles, pelvic bones, hands, feet and hips, are symmetrical is said to have the potential to command the earth - bhṛvau nāsāpuṭē nētrē karṇāvōṣṭhau ca cūcukē kūrparau maṇibandhau ca jānunī vṛṣaṇau kaṭī karau pādau sphijau yasya samau jñēyaḥ sa bhūpatiḥ
Shiny strong Daṃshṭras (canine, first premolar, second premolar, first molar) are considered to be auspicious.
snigdhā ghanāṡca daṡanāḥ sutīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāḥ samāṡca ṡubhāḥ
His gait is comparable to that of four majestic beasts - lion, tiger, elephant and bull.
A person whose five body parts - eyes, teeth, skin, feet and hair, are shiny are said to lord over people. It is said that one with shiny eyes enjoys luxuries, one with shiny teeth begets good food, one with shiny skin begets a comfortable bed, one with shiny feet begets comfortable vehicles and one with shiny hair leads a comfortable life - cakṣuḥ snēhēna saubhāgyaṃ dantasnēhēna bhōjanam tvacaḥ snēhēna ṡayanaṃ pāda snēhēna vāhanam snigdhanīlamṛdukuñcitāstathā mūrdhajāḥ sukhakarāḥ
The eight body parts are - two arms, two thighs, two shanks and the set of ten toes and the set of ten fingers - bāhū ca nalakau cūōrū jaṅghēcētyaṣṭhavaṃṡakāḥ
Ṡlōka 20
The ten delicate parts refer to face, eyes, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, breasts, nails, palms and feet -
mukhanētrāsyajihvōṣṭhatālu stana nakhāḥ karau pādau ca daṡa padmāni padmākārāṇi yasya ca
The ten big parts refer to head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart, mouth, hands, legs and back - ṡirōlalāṭē ṡravaṇē grīvā vakṣaṡca hṛttathā udaraṃ pāṇipādau ca pṛṣṭhaṃ daṡa bṛhanti ca
The three with which the world is filled refer to his radiance, renown and wealth - tribhirvāptaṡca yasya syāttējasā yaṡasā ṡriyā
The two that are blemishless refer to the lineages on both sides, i.e., on the father’s side and mother’s side. - dvau ṡuklau tu ṡubhau ṡuddhau vaṃṡau mātuḥ pitastathā
The six that are prominent refer to armpits, stomach, chest, nose, shoulder blades and forehead - kakṣaḥ kukṣiṡca vakṣaṡca ghrāṇaskandhau lalāṭikā sarvabhūtēṣu nirdiṣṭā unnatāṅgāḥ ṡubhapradāḥ
A person whose nine parts - finger segments, hair on the head, hair on the body, nails, skin, penis, mustache, eyesight and intellect, are sharp are said to enjoy a long life - sūkṣmāṇyaṅguliparvāṇi kēṡarōmanakhatvacaḥ ṡēphaṡca yēṣāṃ sūkṣmāṇi tē narā dīrghajīvinaḥ asphuṭitāgraṃ sūkṣmaṃ ṡmaṡru ṡubhaṃ mṛdu ca saṃtataṃ snigdham sūkṣmadṛk skṣmadṛk sūkṣmabuddiṡca yō naraḥ sa sukhī bhavēt
The goals refer to Dharma, Artha, Kāma and the three times refer to morning, noon and afternoon.

trivalīvāṃstryavanataḥ
caturvyaṅgastriṡīrṣavān ।
catuṣkalaṡcaturlēkhaḥ
catuṣkiṣkuṡcatussamaḥ ॥
He has three lines on his stomach.
His figure is flat in three places.
He is not oversized in four parts.
There are three swirls in his hair on the head,
four cross lines (on the base of the thumb)
four lines across (on forehead).
He is four Kishkus tall and symmetrical in the four.

சதுர்தம்ஷ்ட்ரஸ்சதுர்கதி: ।

caturdaṡasamadvandvaḥ
caturdaṃṣṭraṡcaturgatiḥ ।
mahōṣṭhahanunāsaṡca
pañcasnigdhō'ṣṭavaṃṡavān ॥
His fourteen pairs are symmetrical.
The edges of his four teeth are sharp.
His gait is comparable to that of four.
His lips, chin and nose are prominent.
Five of his body parts glow with sheen,
and eight are shapely.

த்ரிபிர்வ்யாப்தோ த்விஸுக்லவாந் ।

daṡapadmō daṡabṛhat
tribhirvyāptō dviṡuklavān ।
ṣaḍunnatō navatanuḥ
tribhirvyāpnōti rāghavaḥ ॥
The ten body parts of Rāghava
are like lotuses and ten are big.
His is spread throughout the world with three
and both of his (lineages) are blemishless.
The six of his body parts are prominent
and the nine are sharp.
He realizes (his goals) at all the three (times).

satyadharmaparaṡṡrīmān
saṅgrahānugrahē rataḥ ।
dēṡakālavibhāgajñaḥ
sarvalōkapriyaṃvadaḥ ॥
He, the blessed one, steadfastly
adheres to Truth and Dharma.
He is ever interested in
gathering (people) around him
and bestows grace on them.
He knows the importance of utilizing
the time and space at his disposal properly.
He speaks courteously to all people.

anurāgēṇa rūpēṇa
guṇaiṡcaiva tathāvidhaḥ ॥
Sowmitri, his step brother,
who knows no defeat from anyone,
is exactly like him in his looks,
virtues and in showering affection.

Those tigers among men, eager to find you,
went searching all over the earth,
and that is when they happened to meet us.

Seeking you and searching the entire earth,
both of them happened to see
Sugreeva of pleasing disposition,
the lord of beasts, who was
dislodged (from the kingdom) by his elder brother
and was distraught with fear from him,

On seeing those two tigers among men armed with bows,
the bull among Vānaras, confounded by terror,
jumped up to the peak of the mountain.

Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 35
In this Sarga, Seetā asks Hanumān to tell about the distinguishing marks of Rāma and how he came to meet Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, so that she can trust him to be who he says he is.
Hanumān then describes to her in detail Rāma’s physique and other distinguishing marks and characteristics and how Rāma came to meet Sugreeva, how a friendship developed between the two, how Rāma killed Vali and established Sugreeva as the king, how Sugreeva sent the Vānaras in search of her, how the Vānaras led by Aṅgada lost their way on the Vindhya mountain, how Sampāti told them that she is Rāvaṇa’s house, how the Vānaras came to the northern shore of the ocean and how Hanumān jumped over the ocean to reach Laṅkā and finally got to see her in person.
Hanumān assures her that Rāma would come soon and take her back after killing Rāvaṇa and all his kith and kin.

auxiliary sciences are of his constant study.

Three are sturdy, three are long,
three are symmetrical, three are raised,
three are reddish, three are silky
and three are imposing in him. Ṡlōkas 17 through 20 refer to the features defined in Sāmudrika Sastra (the science of bodily features).

The sturdy three refer to chest, wrist and fist, symbols of royalty - uraṡca maṇibandhaṡca muṣṭiṡca nṛpatē sthirāḥ
The long three refer to eyebrows, arms, testicles, symbols of opulence - pralaṃmabāyasya sa dhanī trayō bhrūmuṣkabāhavaḥ
The symmetrical three refer to hair, testicles and shanks, also symbols of royalty - kēṡāgraṃ vṛṣaṇaṃ jānu samāyasya sa bhūpatiḥ
The raised three refer to chest, navel and lower stomach, also symbols of royalty - nābhyantaḥkukṣivakṣōbhirunnataḥ kṣitipō bhavēt
The reddish three refer to the corners of the eye, nails and the pairs of palms and feet, symbolic of one who is born to enjoy life - nētrāntanakhapāṇyaṅghritalaistāmraiḥ sukhī bhavēt
The silky three refer to lines on the feet, hair, scrotum, symbolic of one who is born to be opulent - snigdhā bhavanti vai yēṣāṃ pādarēkhāḥ ṡirōruhāḥ tathā liṅgamaṇistēṣāṃ mahābhāgyaṃ vinirdiṡēt
The imposing three refer to voice, gait and navel, symbolic of one who commands immediate respect - svarē gatau ca nābhau ca gambhīrastriṣuṡasyatē

The three places in which his figure was flat are breasts, nipples and lines (where wrinkles develop in old age, such as on stomach, neck and forehead) - pīnōpacitairnimnaiḥkṣitipatayaḥ
cūcukaiḥstanaiḥ sukhinaḥ
snigdhānimnārēkhādhanināṃ
tadvyatyayēna nissvānām
The four parts in which his body was not oversized are neck, penis, back and shanks -
grīvā prajananaṃ pṛṣṭhaṃ hrasvaṃ jaṅaghā ca pūjyatē
Three swirls in the hair on the head indicate that the person can manage and lead the entire earth - āvarta trayaruciraṃ yasya ṡiraḥ sa kṣitibhṛtāṃ nētā
The number of lines (folds) at the base of the thumb indicate the number of Vēdas in which the person becomes an expert - mūlē'ṅguṣṭhasya vēdānāṃ catasrastisra ēva vā ēkā dvē vā yathāyōgaṃ rēkhā jñēyā dvijanmanām
The number of lines (folds) on the forehead indicate the longevity of a person; one with a single line lives for twenty years, one with two lines lives for sixty years, one with three lines lives for hundred years and one with four lives for two hundred years -
lalāṭē yasya dṛṡyantē catustridvēkarēkhikāḥ ṡatadvayaṃ ṡataṃ ṣaṣṭhistasyāyurviṃṡatistathā
One who has lines underneath the feet or in the palm in the shapes of Vajra, flag post, conch shell or a goad would become a lord of people - yasya pādatalē vajradhvajaṡaṅkhāṅkuṡōpamāḥ rēkhāḥ samyak prakāṡantē manujēndraṃ tamādiṡēt pāṇau catastō rēkhāṡca yasya tiṣṭhantyabhaṅgurāḥ
Kishku is a measure of twenty four inches. Rāma was four Kishkus tall, or ninety six inches tall. One who is four Kishkus tall is considered an equal of Devas - ṣaṇṇavatyaṅgulōtsēdhō yaḥ pumān sa divaukasaḥ
The symmetrical four are the arms, thighs, knees and shanks - bāhujānūrujaṅghāṡca catvāryatha samāni ca
Ṡlōka 19
A person whose fourteen body parts that come in pairs - eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, shanks, testicles, pelvic bones, hands, feet and hips, are symmetrical is said to have the potential to command the earth - bhṛvau nāsāpuṭē nētrē karṇāvōṣṭhau ca cūcukē kūrparau maṇibandhau ca jānunī vṛṣaṇau kaṭī karau pādau sphijau yasya samau jñēyaḥ sa bhūpatiḥ
Shiny strong Daṃshṭras (canine, first premolar, second premolar, first molar) are considered to be auspicious.
snigdhā ghanāṡca daṡanāḥ sutīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāḥ samāṡca ṡubhāḥ
His gait is comparable to that of four majestic beasts - lion, tiger, elephant and bull.
A person whose five body parts - eyes, teeth, skin, feet and hair, are shiny are said to lord over people. It is said that one with shiny eyes enjoys luxuries, one with shiny teeth begets good food, one with shiny skin begets a comfortable bed, one with shiny feet begets comfortable vehicles and one with shiny hair leads a comfortable life - cakṣuḥ snēhēna saubhāgyaṃ dantasnēhēna bhōjanam tvacaḥ snēhēna ṡayanaṃ pāda snēhēna vāhanam snigdhanīlamṛdukuñcitāstathā mūrdhajāḥ sukhakarāḥ
The eight body parts are - two arms, two thighs, two shanks and the set of ten toes and the set of ten fingers - bāhū ca nalakau cūōrū jaṅghēcētyaṣṭhavaṃṡakāḥ

The ten delicate parts refer to face, eyes, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, breasts, nails, palms and feet -
mukhanētrāsyajihvōṣṭhatālu stana nakhāḥ karau pādau ca daṡa padmāni padmākārāṇi yasya ca
The ten big parts refer to head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart, mouth, hands, legs and back - ṡirōlalāṭē ṡravaṇē grīvā vakṣaṡca hṛttathā udaraṃ pāṇipādau ca pṛṣṭhaṃ daṡa bṛhanti ca
The three with which the world is filled refer to his radiance, renown and wealth - tribhirvāptaṡca yasya syāttējasā yaṡasā ṡriyā
The two that are blemishless refer to the lineages on both sides, i.e., on the father’s side and mother’s side. - dvau ṡuklau tu ṡubhau ṡuddhau vaṃṡau mātuḥ pitastathā
The six that are prominent refer to armpits, stomach, chest, nose, shoulder blades and forehead - kakṣaḥ kukṣiṡca vakṣaṡca ghrāṇaskandhau lalāṭikā sarvabhūtēṣu nirdiṣṭā unnatāṅgāḥ ṡubhapradāḥ
A person whose nine parts - finger segments, hair on the head, hair on the body, nails, skin, penis, mustache, eyesight and intellect, are sharp are said to enjoy a long life - sūkṣmāṇyaṅguliparvāṇi kēṡarōmanakhatvacaḥ ṡēphaṡca yēṣāṃ sūkṣmāṇi tē narā dīrghajīvinaḥ asphuṭitāgraṃ sūkṣmaṃ ṡmaṡru ṡubhaṃ mṛdu ca saṃtataṃ snigdham sūkṣmadṛk skṣmadṛk sūkṣmabuddiṡca yō naraḥ sa sukhī bhavēt
The goals refer to Dharma, Artha, Kāma and the three times refer to morning, noon and afternoon.

guṇaiṡcaiva tathāvidhaḥ ॥
Sowmitri, his step brother,
who knows no defeat from anyone,
is exactly like him in his looks,
virtues and in showering affection.

tāvubhau naraṡārdūlau
tvaddarṡanasamutsukau ।
vicinvantau mahīṃ kṛtsnām
asmābhirabhisaṅgatau ॥
Those tigers among men, eager to find you,
went searching all over the earth,
and that is when they happened to meet us.

ருஸ்யமூகஸ்ய ப்ருஷ்டே து
பஹுபாதபஸங்குலே ।
ப்ராதுர்பயார்தமாஸீநம்
ஸுக்ரீவம் ப்ரியதர்ஸநம் ॥
tvāmēva mārgamāṇau tau
vicarantau vasundharām ।
dadarṡaturmṛgapatim
pūrvajēnāvarōpitam ।
ṛṡyamūkasya pṛṣṭhē tu
bahupādapasaṅkulē ।
bhrāturbhayārtamāsīnam
sugrīvaṃ priyadarṡanam ॥
Seeking you and searching the entire earth,
both of them happened to see
Sugreeva of pleasing disposition,
the lord of beasts, who was
dislodged (from the kingdom) by his elder brother
and was distraught with fear from him,
sitting on the top of the Ṛshyamūka (mountain)
which was thickly covered with trees.

ஸுக்ரீவம் ஸத்யஸங்கரம் ।
பரிசர்யாமஹே ராஜ்யாத்
பூர்வஜேநாவரோபிதம் ॥
vayaṃ tu harirājaṃ tam
sugrīvaṃ satyasaṅgaram ।
paricaryāmahē rājyāt
pūrvajēnāvarōpitam ॥
And we took upon ourselves to serve
Sugreeva, the king of Vānaras,
who holds himself to the promises he makes,
after he was dislodged from the
kingdom by his elder brother.

தநு: ப்ரவரபாணிநௌ ।
ருஸ்யமூகஸ்ய ஸைலஸ்ய
ரம்யம் தேஸமுபாகதௌ ॥
tatastau cīravasanau
dhanuḥ pravarapāṇinau ।
ṛṡyamūkasya ṡailasya
ramyaṃ dēṡamupāgatau ॥
Then, those two, clad in tree bark,
and holding powerful bows in their hands,
came to the beautiful area of Ṛshyamūka mountain.

தந்விநௌ வாநரர்ஷப: ।
அவப்லுதோ கிரேஸ்தஸ்ய
ஸிகரம் பயமோஹித: ॥
sa tau dṛṣṭvā naravyāghrau
dhanvinau vānararṣabhaḥ ।
avaplutō girēstasya
ṡikharaṃ bhayamōhitaḥ ॥
On seeing those two tigers among men armed with bows,
the bull among Vānaras, confounded by terror,
jumped up to the peak of the mountain.
