Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 33
In this Sarga, Hanumān gets down from the tree and asks Seetā who she is. He pretends as if he does not know who she is. He tries to guess who she is and gradually concludes that she must be Seetā and asks whether she could confirm.
Seetā, feeling happy to hear Hanumān sing praises of Rāma, tells him that she is indeed Seetā and tells how she happened to be where she is and about the time limit of two months set on her life by Rāvaṇa.

vidrumapratimānanaḥ ।
vinītavēṣaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ
praṇipatyōpasṛtya ca ।
tāmabravīnmahātējā
hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ।
ṡirasyañjalimādhāya
sītāṃ madhurayā girā ॥
Hanumān, the sun of Vāyu of supreme radiance,
his face glowing coral-red,
got down from the tree.
He approached her with great sympathy
and made humble salutations to her
holding his joined palms above his head,
and spoke these words in a pleasant voice:

Gandharvas, Rākshasas, Yakshas or Kinnaras?

Could you be from Rudras, Maruts or Vasus?
You look like one among the Dēvas to me,
O you of beautiful Kaṭee!

the foremost of all stars
endowed with every good quality
who had been separated from the moon
and had fallen from the heavens?

O you of beautiful black eyes!
You are not Arundhati, the Kalyāṇi, are you?
You did not offend your husband Vasishṭha
out of anger or silliness, did you!

O you of lovely waist! Are you crying
about your father or brother or husband
who has departed from this world to the other?

rōdanādatiniṡṡvāsāt
bhūmisaṃsparṡanādapi ।
na tvāṃ dēvīmahaṃ manyē
rājñaḥ saṃjñāvadhāraṇāt ॥
I would not think that you are a Dēvata,
because you are crying, sighing heavily
and standing on the ground (not floating above)
and because of the marks of royalty on you!

mahiṣī bhūmipālasya
rājakanyā ca mē matā ॥
I think, based on your appearance and
the marks on you that are apparent,
that you are the daughter of a king
and wife of a ruler of the earth.

balādapadahṛtā yadi ।
sītā tvamasi bhadraṃ tē
tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥
I want to ask you whether
you are Seetā who was carried off
by Rāvaṇa by force from Janasthāna!
Please tell me; may all bode well for you!

tapasā cānvitō vēṣaḥ
tvaṃ rāmamahiṣī dhruvam ॥
Based on your pitiful semblance,
your extraordinary beauty
and your ascetic appearance
you must surely be the queen of Rāma!

hanumantaṃ drumāṡritam ॥
On hearing his words of praise for Rāma,
Vaidēhi was extremely happy and said these words
to Hanumān who was by the tree.

mukhyasya viditātmanaḥ ।
snuṣā daṡarathasyāham
ṡatrusainyapratāpinaḥ ॥
Yes, I am the daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha,
who was prominent among the lions among kings,
who tormented the enemy forces and
whose personality is well known.

I am the daughter of Mahātma Janaka,
the king of Vidēha.
My name is Seetā and
I am the wife of sagacious Rāma.

For twelve years, living in the house of Rāghava,
I enjoyed every luxury a human can conceive of,
knowing no bounds to what I can wish for.

rājyēnēkṣvākunandanam ।
abhiṣēcayituṃ rājā
sōpādhyāyaḥ pracakramē ॥
Then, in the thirteenth year,
the king, along with the preceptors,
was all set to consecrate
the scion of the Ikshwākus,
(as the crown prince) in the kingdom.

While arrangements were
being made for the consecration,
one of the queens, Kaikēyee by name,
said these words to her husband:

pratyahaṃ mama bhōjanam ।
ēṣa mē jīvitasyāntō
rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē ॥
I shall neither drink
nor have a daily meal
if Rāma is consecrated;
that day would be the last day of my life.

prītyā nṛpatisattama ।
tacchēnna vitathaṃ kāryam
vanaṃ gacchatu rāghavaḥ ॥
O great lord of people!
Pleased with me, you gave me your word.
Rāghava should go to Vana,
if that word is not to become an empty promise!

That king, who was true to his word,
recalled the boon he had given
and swooned on hearing those
cruel and heart-wrenching words.

Then the aged king, adhering to Truth and Dharma,
cried and requested his renowned elder son
to give the kingdom back to him
(so that it can be passed on to Bharata).

and he would never utter an unpleasant word
even if it was to save his own life.

for I would not be interested in
staying without him even in heaven.

The blessed Sowmitri, a delight of his friends,
was already prepared to follow his older brother,
clad in tree bark.

Then with firm resolve and
in complete deference
to the instructions of the lord,
we entered the deep woods
which we had never seen before.

rakṣasā'pahṛtā bhāryā
rāvaṇēna durātmanā ॥
Then, I, the wife of that man of immense power,
was abducted by Rāvaṇa, the evil minded Rākshasa,
while staying in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya.

Just two more months of lease
on my life have been given to me by him;
once those two months pass,
I shall take my own life.

ki nu candramasā hīnā
patitā vibudhālayāt ।
rōhiṇī jyōtiṣāṃ ṡrēṣṭhā
ṡrēṣṭhasarvaguṇānvitā ॥
Are you that Rōhiṇee,
the foremost of all stars
endowed with every good quality
who had been separated from the moon
and had fallen from the heavens?

You are not Arundhati, the Kalyāṇi, are you?
You did not offend your husband Vasishṭha
out of anger or silliness, did you!

na tvāṃ dēvīmahaṃ manyē

I would not think that you are a Dēvata,
because you are crying, sighing heavily
and standing on the ground (not floating above)
and because of the marks of royalty on you!

mahiṣī bhūmipālasya
rājakanyā ca mē matā ॥
I think, based on your appearance and
the marks on you that are apparent,
that you are the daughter of a king
and wife of a ruler of the earth.

sītā tvamasi bhadraṃ tē
tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥
I want to ask you whether
you are Seetā who was carried off
by Rāvaṇa by force from Janasthāna!
Please tell me; may all bode well for you!

Based on your pitiful semblance,
your extraordinary beauty
and your ascetic appearance
you must surely be the queen of Rāma!

On hearing his words of praise for Rāma,
Vaidēhi was extremely happy and said these words
to Hanumān who was by the tree.

mukhyasya viditātmanaḥ ।
snuṣā daṡarathasyāham

Yes, I am the daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha,
who was prominent among the lions among kings,
who tormented the enemy forces and
whose personality is well known.

I am the daughter of Mahātma Janaka,
the king of Vidēha.
My name is Seetā and
I am the wife of sagacious Rāma.

For twelve years, living in the house of Rāghava,

knowing no bounds to what I can wish for.

Then, in the thirteenth year,
the king, along with the preceptors,
was all set to consecrate
the scion of the Ikshwākus,
(as the crown prince) in the kingdom.

being made for the consecration,
one of the queens, Kaikēyee by name,

ēṣa mē jīvitasyāntō
rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē ॥
I shall neither drink
nor have a daily meal
if Rāma is consecrated;
that day would be the last day of my life.

tacchēnna vitathaṃ kāryam
vanaṃ gacchatu rāghavaḥ ॥
O great lord of people!
Pleased with me, you gave me your word.
Rāghava should go to Vana,
if that word is not to become an empty promise!

kaikēyyāḥ krūramapriyam ॥
That king, who was true to his word,
recalled the boon he had given
and swooned on hearing those
cruel and heart-wrenching words.

satyē dharmē vyavasthitaḥ ।
jyēṣṭhaṃ yaṡasvinaṃ putram

Then the aged king, adhering to Truth and Dharma,
cried and requested his renowned elder son
to give the kingdom back to him
(so that it can be passed on to Bharata).

The blessed one, keeping in mind

Rāma, a man of true valor,
only gives, but never takes;
and he would never utter an unpleasant word
even if it was to save his own life.

Then he of great renown
left behind his luxurious upper garments,
removed the thought of the kingdom from his mind
and directed me to the care of his mother.

prasthitā vanacāriṇī ।

However, right then and there
I readied myself to walk
in the Vana along with him;
for I would not be interested in
staying without him even in heaven.

The blessed Sowmitri, a delight of his friends,
was already prepared to follow his older brother,
clad in tree bark.

bahumānya dṛḍhavratāḥ ।
praviṣṭāssma purādṛṣṭam

Then with firm resolve and
in complete deference
to the instructions of the lord,
we entered the deep woods
which we had never seen before.

tasyāhamamitaujasaḥ ।
rakṣasā'pahṛtā bhāryā
rāvaṇēna durātmanā ॥
Then, I, the wife of that man of immense power,
was abducted by Rāvaṇa, the evil minded Rākshasa,
while staying in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya.

ஜீவிதாநுக்ரஹ: க்ருத: ।

dvau māsau tēna mē kālō
jīvitānugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ ।
ūrdhvaṃ dvābhyāṃ tu māsābhyām
tatastyakṣyāmi jīvitam ॥
Just two more months of lease
on my life have been given to me by him;
once those two months pass,
I shall take my own life.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ரயஸ்த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
