Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 31
In this Sarga, Hanumān, atop the Ṡiṃṡupa tree, sings the stories of Daṡaratha, Rāma, Rāma’s exile, Seetā’s abduction, Rāma’s friendship with Sugreeva, Rāma’s slaying of Vāli, Vānaras going in search of Seetā, his crossing the ocean and finally finding Seetā.
Hearing the words of Hanumān, Seetā becomes extremely surprised and feels extremely happy. She looks around and above and sees Hanumān on the tree.

சிந்தயித்வா மஹாகபி: ।
ஸம்ஸ்ரவே மதுரம் வாக்யம்
வைதேஹ்யா வ்யாஜஹார ஹ ॥
ēvaṃ bahuvidhāṃ cintām
cintayitvā mahākapiḥ ।
saṃṡravē madhuraṃ vākyam
vaidēhyā vyājahāra ha ॥
The great Vānara, thinking the many aspects thus,
spoke these sweet words so that Vaidēhi could hear them:

ரதகுஞ்ஜரவாஜிமாந் ।
புண்யஸீலோ மஹாகீர்தி:
இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் மஹாயஸா: ॥
rājā daṡarathō nāma
rathakuñjaravājimān ।
puṇyaṡīlō mahākīrtiḥ
ikṣvākūṇāṃ mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
There was a king by name Daṡaratha,
who commanded many chariots, elephants and horses.
He is famously known as a man of Puṇya deeds.
He is of great renown among Ikshwākus.

5.31.3 ஈ ராஜர்ஷீணாம் குணஸ்ரேஷ்ட:
தபஸா சர்ஷிபிஸ்ஸம: ।
சக்ரவர்திகுலே ஜாத:
புரந்தரஸமோ பலே ॥
rājarṣīṇāṃ guṇaṡrēṣṭhaḥ
tapasā carṣibhissamaḥ ।
cakravartikulē jātaḥ
purandarasamō balē ॥
He excelled among Rājarshis in virtues.
He surpassed even Rishis in his Tapa.
He was born into a lineage of emperors.
He equaled Indra in his strength.

5.31.4 ஈ அஹிம்ஸாரதிரக்ஷுத்ரோ
க்ருணீ ஸத்யபராக்ரம: ।
முக்யஸ்சேக்ஷ்வாகுவம்ஸஸ்ய
லக்ஷ்மீவாந் லக்ஷ்மிவர்தந: ॥
ahiṃsāratirakṣudrō
ghṛṇī satyaparākramaḥ ।
mukhyaṡcēkṣvākuvaṃṡasya
lakṣmīvān lakṣmivardhanaḥ ॥
He was committed to non-violence.
He was the opposite of anything that is base.
He was compassionate and a man of true valor.
He was a prominent person in the lineage of Ikshwākus.
He was rich and enhanced
the prosperity (of his kingdom).

5.31.5 ஈ பார்திவவ்யஞ்ஜநைர்யுக்த:
ப்ருதுஸ்ரீ: பார்திவர்ஷப: ।
ப்ருதிவ்யாம் சதுரந்தாயாம்
விஸ்ருதஸ்ஸுகதஸ்ஸுகீ ॥
pārthivavyañjanairyuktaḥ
pṛthuṡrīḥ pārthivarṣabhaḥ ।
pṛthivyāṃ caturantāyām
viṡrutassukhadassukhī ॥
He had all the marks of royalty.
He was wealthy with a vast expanse of lands.
He was the bull among kings.
His fame spread to the four corners of the world.
He enjoyed comforts and ensured that everyone had them.

5.31.6 ஈ தஸ்ய புத்ர: ப்ரியோ ஜ்யேஷ்ட:
தாராதிபநிபாநந: ।
ராமோ நாம விஸேஷஜ்ஞ:
ஸ்ரேஷ்டஸ்ஸர்வதநுஷ்மதாம் ॥
tasya putraḥ priyō jyēṣṭhaḥ
tārādhipanibhānanaḥ ।
rāmō nāma viṡēṣajñaḥ
ṡrēṣṭhassarvadhanuṣmatām ॥
His beloved elder son by name Rāma,
whose face shone like the lord of stars,
is the best among all archers and
is cognizant of everything that matters.

5.31.7 ஈ ரக்ஷிதா ஸ்வஸ்ய வ்ருத்தஸ்ய
ஸ்வஜநஸ்ய ச ரக்ஷிதா ।
ரக்ஷிதா ஜீவலோகஸ்ய
தர்மஸ்ய ச பரந்தப: ॥
rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya
svajanasya ca rakṣitā ।
rakṣitā jīvalōkasya
dharmasya ca parantapaḥ ॥
Rāma safeguards his character, Dharma,
his people, nay, all beings in the world,
and ruthlessly torments his foes.

வ்ருத்தஸ்ய வசநாத்பிது: ।
ஸபார்யஸ்ஸஹ ச ப்ராத்ரா
வீர: ப்ரவ்ராஜிதோ வநம் ॥
tasya satyābhisandhasya
vṛddhasya vacanātpituḥ ।
sabhāryassaha ca bhrātrā
vīraḥ pravrājitō vanam ॥
Because of the word given by his father
who was a man of his word,
that Veera went in exile
along with his wife and brother.

ம்ருகயாம் பரிதாவதா ।
ராக்ஷஸா நிஹதாஸ்ஸூரா
பஹவ: காமரூபிண: ॥
tēna tatra mahāraṇyē
mṛgayāṃ paridhāvatā ।
rākṣasā nihatāṡṡūrā
bahavaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ॥
He used to go out hunting in that great forest,
and kill many a strong Rākshasa
who could take any form at will.

ஹதௌ ச கரதூஷணௌ ।
ததஸ்த்வமர்ஷாபஹ்ருதா

வஞ்சயித்வா வநே ராமம்
ம்ருகரூபேண மாயயா ॥
janasthānavadhaṃ ṡrutvā
hatau ca kharadūṣaṇau ।
tatastvamarṣāpahṛtā
jānakī rāvaṇēna tu ।
vañcayitvā vanē rāmam
mṛgarūpēṇa māyayā ॥
Hearing about the killing of
Khara and Dūshaṇa in Janasthāna
Rāvaṇa became outraged and abducted Jānaki,
after distracting Rāma,
tricking him in the guise of a deer.

ராமஸ்ஸீதாமநிந்திதாம் ।
ஆஸஸாத வநே மித்ரம்
ஸுக்ரீவம் நாம வாநரம் ॥
sa mārgamāṇastāṃ dēvīm
rāmassītāmaninditām ।
āsasāda vanē mitram
sugrīvaṃ nāma vānaram ॥
While searching for the blemish-less lady in that Vana,
Rāma met a friend, a Vānara known as Sugreeva.

ராம: பரபுரஞ்ஜய: ।
ப்ராயச்சத்கபிராஜ்யம் தத்
ஸுக்ரீவாய மஹாபல: ॥
tatassa vālinaṃ hatvā
rāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ।
prāyacchatkapirājyaṃ tat
sugrīvāya mahābalaḥ ॥
Then, Rāma who conquered the cities of his enemies,
killed Vāli and gave the kingdom of Vānaras to Sugreeva.

ஹரய: காமரூபிண: ।
திக்ஷு ஸர்வாஸு தாம் தேவீம்
விசிந்வந்தி ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
sugrīvēṇāpi sandiṣṭā
harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ।
dikṣu sarvāsu tāṃ dēvīm
vicinvanti sahasraṡaḥ ॥
Ordered by Sugreeva, thousands of Vānaras
who can take any form at will,
went in all directions in search of that lady.

ஸதயோஜநமாயதம் ।
அஸ்யா ஹேதோர்விஸாலாக்ஷ்யா:
ஸாகரம் வேகவாந்ப்லுத: ॥
ahaṃ sampātivacanā
ṡatayōjanamāyatam ।
asyā hētōrviṡālākṣyāḥ
sāgaraṃ vēgavānplutaḥ ॥
Following the guidance given by Sampāti,
I, who am extremely fast, jumped over the ocean
that is one hundred Yōjanas wide,
for the sake of that wide-eyed one.

5.31.15 ஈ யதாரூபாம் யதாவர்ணாம்
யதாலக்ஷ்மீவதீம் ச தாம் ।
அஸ்ரௌஷம் ராகவஸ்யாஹம்
ஸேயமாஸாதிதா மயா ॥
yathārūpāṃ yathāvarṇāṃ
yathālakṣmīvatīṃ ca tām ।
aṡrauṣaṃ rāghavasyāham
sēyamāsāditā mayā ॥
Now I have found her, who is exactly
as I heard Rāghava describing,
in her form, complexion
and the marks on her body.

வாசம் வாநரபுங்கவ: ।
ஜாநகீ சாபி தச்ச்ருத்வா
பரம் விஸ்மயமாகதா ॥
virarāmaivamuktvāsau
vācaṃ vānarapuṅgavaḥ ।
jānakī cāpi tacchrutvā
paraṃ vismayamāgatā ॥
With those words, the bull among Vānaras
completed what he wanted to say.
Jānaki was very surprised to hear those words.

ஸுகேஸீ கேஸஸம்வ்ருதம் ।
உந்நம்ய வதநம் பீரு:
ஸிம்ஸுபாவ்ருக்ஷமைக்ஷத ॥
tatassā vakrakēṡāntā
sukēṡī kēṡasaṃvṛtam ।
unnamya vadanaṃ bhīruḥ
ṡiṃṡupāvṛkṣamaikṣata ॥
Then she, whose tresses had curly ends,
timidly lifted her face that was
skirted by that beautiful hair,
and looked at the Ṡiṃṡupa tree. Valmiki, vivid always in his description of the visuals, is describing here an aerial shot/view of Seetā’s face.

5.31.18 ஈ நிஸம்ய ஸீதா வசநம் கபேஸ்ச
திஸஸ்ச ஸர்வா: ப்ரதிஸஸ்ச வீக்ஷ்ய ।
ஸ்வயம் ப்ரஹர்ஷம் பரமம் ஜகாம
ஸர்வாத்மநா ராமமநுஸ்மரந்தீ ॥
niṡamya sītā vacanaṃ kapēṡca
diṡaṡca sarvāḥ pradiṡaṡca vīkṣya ।
svayaṃ praharṣaṃ paramaṃ jagāma
sarvātmanā rāmamanusmarantī ॥
Seetā, whose own mind was
preoccupied with the thoughts of Rāma,
heard those words of the Vānara
and felt extremely happy and
looked around in all directions.

5.31.19 ஈ ஸா திர்யகூர்த்வம் ச ததாப்யதஸ்தாத்
நிரீக்ஷமாணா தமசிந்த்யபுத்திம் ।
ததர்ஸ பிங்காதிபதேரமாத்யம்
வாதாத்மஜம் ஸூர்யமிவோதயஸ்தம் ॥
sā tiryagūrdhvaṃ ca tathāpyadhastāt
nirīkṣamāṇā tamacintyabuddhim ।
dadarṡa piṅgādhipatēramātyaṃ
vātātmajaṃ sūryamivōdayastham ॥
Then looking up, down and around,
she saw the unimaginably astute Hanumān,
the son of Vāyu and minister of the Vānara Lord
who looked like the sun
rising above the eastern mountain.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஏகத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē ēkatriṃṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the thirty first Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
