sahasā rākṣasīgaṇāḥ ।
nānāpraharaṇō ghōraḥ
samēyādantakōpamaḥ ॥
On hearing her cries, the hordes of
cruel Rākshasis who resemble Yama
will storm here armed with many weapons.

from branch to bough and bough to trunk,
they will become suspicious and scared.

Seeing me jump around
in the Vana with my huge body
the Rākshasis, with their ugly faces,
will panic and be terrified.

who were deployed by the lord of Rākshasas
to protect his palace.

Responding to the commotion,
they will join the melee in a hurry
armed with many weapons like
spear, Ṡakti and sword.

ṡaknuyāṃ na tu saṃprāptum

Once they beset me from every side,
it will be difficult for me to chase them away
and make to the other side of the great ocean.

Some of them may be fast enough
to jump upon and capture me.
Then, on the one hand I will be caught and
on the other, she may not even know about it.

imāṃ vā janakātmajām ।
vipannaṃ syāttataḥ kāryam
rāmasugrīvayōridam ॥
Drawn to cruelty, they may even kill
this daughter of Janaka, foiling the very purpose
of the enterprise of Rāma and Sugreeva.

guptē vasati jānakī ॥
Jānaki is kept in secrecy in an
area that is closed to all roads
guarded by Rākshasas and surrounded by the ocean.

Should the Rākshasas kill me
or capture me in the altercation,
there is no one that I can think of
who could help in achieving the purpose of Rāma.

No matter how hard I think,
I cannot think of a Vānara
who can jump over the mighty ocean
that is one hundred Yōjanas wide,
once I am done with.

sahasrāṇyapi rakṣasām ।

I am quite capable of killing
even thousands of Rākshasas; but then,
I would be (so exhausted) that I might not be
able to reach the other side of the mighty ocean.

I do not like a fight,
for the outcome is uncertain;
why would anyone in his right mind turn
a situation from certain to uncertain?

பவேதநபிபாஷணே ।

prāṇatyāgaṡca vaidēhyā
bhavēdanabhibhāṣaṇē ।
ēṣa dōṣō mahānhi syāt
mama sītābhibhāṣaṇē ॥
If I do not speak, it would certainly
result in Vaidēhi giving up her life.
But if I do speak to Seetā,
it would result in this terrible situation
(of me being caught or killed by the Rākshasas;
and either way, it would hurt the cause of Rāma).

viklabaṃ dūtamāsādya
tamaḥ sūryōdayē yathā ॥
Objectives which are as good as gained
might be ruined by a foolish envoy
who goes against the time and place,
as surely as darkness is ruined when the sun comes up.

ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi
dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ ॥
Even a mind that is steady falters
saddled between pros and cons.
The envoy who flatters oneself as wise
would only ruin the matters at hand.

vaiklabyaṃ na kathaṃ bhavēt ।
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya
kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavēt ।
kathaṃ nu khalu vākyaṃ mē
ṡṛṇuyānnōdvijēta vā ॥
How am I to make sure that
the objective is not ruined,
judgement does not falter,
crossing the ocean does not go in vain and
she does not panic on hearing my words?

சகார மதிமாந்மதிம் ॥
iti sañcintya hanumān
cakāra matimānmatim ॥
Thinking it over thus, the sagacious Hanuman
made up his mind on what to do.

tathā sarvaṃ samādadhē ॥
I shall speak every sweet word about Rāma,
the best among the Ikshwākus
who is reputed for his personality,
that is necessary to create trust in her.

iti sa bahuvidhaṃ mahānubhāvō
jagatipatēḥ pramadāmavēkṣamāṇaḥ ।
madhuramavitathaṃ jagāda vākyam
drumaviṭapāntaramāsthitō hanūmān ॥
And Hanumān, the great soul,
spoke these sweet and flawless words
from his place on the tree-branch
looking at the lady of the lord of the world.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥

bhavēdanabhibhāṣaṇē ।
ēṣa dōṣō mahānhi syāt
mama sītābhibhāṣaṇē ॥
If I do not speak, it would certainly
result in Vaidēhi giving up her life.
But if I do speak to Seetā,
it would result in this terrible situation
(of me being caught or killed by the Rākshasas;
and either way, it would hurt the cause of Rāma).

tamaḥ sūryōdayē yathā ॥
Objectives which are as good as gained
might be ruined by a foolish envoy
who goes against the time and place,
as surely as darkness is ruined when the sun comes up.

ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi
dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ ॥
Even a mind that is steady falters
saddled between pros and cons.
The envoy who flatters oneself as wise
would only ruin the matters at hand.

vaiklabyaṃ na kathaṃ bhavēt ।
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya
kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavēt ।
kathaṃ nu khalu vākyaṃ mē
ṡṛṇuyānnōdvijēta vā ॥
How am I to make sure that
the objective is not ruined,
judgement does not falter,
crossing the ocean does not go in vain and
she does not panic on hearing my words?

iti sañcintya hanumān
cakāra matimānmatim ॥
Thinking it over thus, the sagacious Hanuman
made up his mind on what to do.

I would not scare her if I sing
praises of her dearest relative Rāma,
who accomplishes everything with ease,
since her mind is already
filled with the thoughts of that companion.

ikṣvākūṇāṃ variṣṭhasya
rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ।
ṡubhāni dharmayuktāni
vacanāni samarpayan ।
ṡrāvayiṣyāmi sarvāṇi
madhurāṃ prabruvan giram ।
ṡraddhāsyati yathāhīyam
tathā sarvaṃ samādadhē ॥
I shall speak every sweet word about Rāma,
the best among the Ikshwākus
who is reputed for his personality,
that is necessary to create trust in her.

ஜகதிபதே: ப்ரமதாமவேக்ஷமாண: ।

த்ருமவிடபாந்தரமாஸ்திதோ ஹநூமாந் ॥
iti sa bahuvidhaṃ mahānubhāvō
jagatipatēḥ pramadāmavēkṣamāṇaḥ ।
madhuramavitathaṃ jagāda vākyam
drumaviṭapāntaramāsthitō hanūmān ॥
And Hanumān, the great soul,
spoke these sweet and flawless words
from his place on the tree-branch
looking at the lady of the lord of the world.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
