Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 26
In this Sarga, Seetā broods over her predicament. She wonders whether she has done terrible things in her past lives, or whether her Puṇya is completely depleted, for her to be in such a predicament.
Even then, she defiantly tells the Rākshasis that they can eat her if they so wish, but she would not yield to their badgering. She warns them that the bad days for Laṅkā are not too far away, when Rāma’s arrows would burn the city down, turning it into a cremation ground. She tells them that, in not a distant future, she hopes to see all the Rākshasas dead and Rākshasis in every house wailing just as she does now.
Yet, she wonders why Rāma has not come so far to her rescue and conjures up various reasons. She wonders whether Rāma knows where she is. She fears that Rāma might have been killed by Rāvaṇa by ruse. She wonders whether Rāma has taken to the life of a Vana-dweller giving up arms. She feels it is better for her to give up her life, having fallen into the hands of the wicked Rāvaṇa.

Thinking to herself thus and
with her face bathed in tears and hanging down,
that young dame began to cry.

upāvṛttā kiṡōrīva
vivēṣṭantī mahītalē ॥
She wailed like one who was possessed,
had lost her mind and was given to delusions.
She rolled on the ground like a filly
that was let to relieve itself of its fatigue.

rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā ।
rāvaṇēna pramathyāham
ānītā krōṡatī balāt ॥
I have been forced by Rāvaṇa,
the Rākshasa, who can take any form at will,
and have been brought here forcibly as I cried,
while Rāghava was distracted.

சிந்தயந்தீ ஸுது:கார்தா

bhartsyamānā sudāruṇam ।
cintayantī suduḥkhārtā
nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahē ॥
Fallen into the hands of these Rākshasis,
harassed extremely terribly
and crying in extreme misery,
I bear no flair to live.

நைவார்தேர்ந ச பூஷணை: ।
வஸந்த்யா ராக்ஷஸீமத்யே

naivārthērna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ ।
vasantyā rākṣasīmadhyē
vinā rāmaṃ mahāratham ॥
Living in the midst of these Rākshasis,
and away from Rāma, the great charioter,
neither this life, nor riches,
nor ornaments have any meaning.

அதவாப்யஜராமரம் ।
ஹ்ருதயம் மம யேநேதம்

athavāpyajarāmaram ।
hṛdayaṃ mama yēnēdam
na duḥkhēnāvaṡīryatē ॥
Surely this heart of mine is made of iron,
or it must be immune from aging and death,
to remain unshattered by such grief.

யாऽஹம் தேநா விநா க்ருதா ।
முஹூர்தமபி ரக்ஷாமி

yā'haṃ tēnā vinā kṛtā ।
muhūrtamapi rakṣāmi
jīvitaṃ pāpajīvitā ॥
Dhik! I must be ignoble!
I am sinful! I am a vile creature!
(Or else, how is it that) I am able to
cling to this wretched life even for an hour,
after being separated from him!

பர்தாரம் ஸாகராந்தாயா

sukhē vā taṃ priyaṃ vinā ।
bhartāraṃ sāgarāntāyā
vasudhāyāḥ priyaṃvadam ॥
What do I have to do with this life or comforts
without him, the lord of the ocean-girdled earth,
who always speaks pleasantly!

ஸரீரம் விஸ்ருஜாம்யஹம் ।

bhidyatāṃ bhakṣyatāṃ vāpi
ṡarīraṃ visṛjāmyaham ।
na cāpyahaṃ ciraṃ duḥkham
sahēyaṃ priyavarjitā ॥
I shall cast away this body!
Let it be torn into pieces and be eaten!
I cannot, deprived of my beloved,
bear this grief any longer!

rāvaṇaṃ kiṃ punaraham
kāmayēyaṃ vigarhitam ॥
I would not touch Rāvaṇa, the nocturnal,
even with my left foot, what then,
to speak of loving the despicable wretch!

நாத்மாநம் நாத்மந: குலம் ।
யோ ந்ருஸம்ஸஸ்வபாவேந

pratyākhyātaṃ na jānāti
nātmānaṃ nātmanaḥ kulam ।
yō nṛṡaṃsasvabhāvēna
māṃ prārthayitumicchati ॥
He is being hard-hearted in his wooing of me;
neither does he realize that I reject him,
nor is he worried about (the destruction of) his clan.

தீப்தேவாக்நௌ ப்ரதீபிதா ।
ராவணம் நோபதிஷ்டேயம்

chinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā
dīptēvāgnau pradīpitā ।
rāvaṇaṃ nōpatiṣṭhēyam
kiṃ pralāpēna vaṡciram ॥
You may cut me, pound me, tear me to pieces,
or burn me in glowing fire,
but I will never give myself up to Rāvaṇa.
What is the use of your prolonged blustering?

ஸாநுக்ரோஸஸ்ச ராகவ: ।
ஸத்வ்ருத்தோ நிரநுக்ரோஸ:
ஸங்கே மத்பாக்யஸங்க்ஷயாத் ॥
khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaṡca
sānukrōṡaṡca rāghavaḥ ।
sadvṛttō niranukrōṡaḥ
ṡaṅkē madbhāgyasaṅkṣayāt ॥
Rāghava is known for his sagacity,
deep sense of gratitude, kindness to all
and for his blameless life; I guess it must be
that my good days are behind me
that he shows no pity for me.

ஜநஸ்தாநே சதுர்தஸ ।
யேநைகேந நிரஸ்தாநி

janasthānē caturdaṡa ।
yēnaikēna nirastāni
sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyatē ॥
Otherwise, why does he, who destroyed
fourteen thousand Rākshasas in Janasthāna
single-handedly, not come to my rescue?

அல்பவீர்யேண ரக்ஷஸா ।
ஸமர்த: கலு மே பர்தா

alpavīryēṇa rakṣasā ।
samarthaḥ khalu mē bhartā
rāvaṇaṃ hantumāhavē ॥
I am trapped by Rāvaṇa,
a Rākshasa of trifling valor;
my husband is very much capable of
killing this Rāvaṇa in a fight.

யேந ராக்ஷஸபுங்கவ: ।
ரணே ராமேண நிஹத:

yēna rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ ।
raṇē rāmēṇa nihataḥ
sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyatē ॥
Why does Rāma, who killed Virādha,
a bull among Rākshasas, in fight
in Daṇḍaka Araṇya, not come to my rescue?

5.26.17 ஈ காமம் மத்யே ஸமுத்ரஸ்ய
லங்கேயம் துஷ்ப்ரதர்ஷணா ।
ந து ராகவபாணாநாம்
கதிரோதோ பவிஷ்யதி ॥
kāmaṃ madhyē samudrasya
laṅkēyaṃ duṣpradharṣaṇā ।
na tu rāghavabāṇānām
gatirōdhō bhaviṣyati ॥
This Laṅkā, situated in the middle-of an ocean,
may be invincible; but there is nothing
that can stop the onslaught of Rāghava’s arrows!

ராமோ த்ருடபராக்ரம: ।
ரக்ஷஸாபஹ்ருதாம் பார்யாம்

kinnu tatkāraṇaṃ yēna
rāmō dṛḍhaparākramaḥ ।
rakṣasāpahṛtāṃ bhāryām
iṣṭāṃ nābhyavapadyatē ॥
What then could be the reason for Rāma,
of well-established prowess,
not rescuing his beloved wife
who has been abducted by a Rākshasa?

ஸங்கே லக்ஷ்மணபூர்வஜ: ।
ஜாநந்நபி ஹி தேஜஸ்வீ

ihasthāṃ māṃ na jānītē
ṡaṅkē lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ।
jānannapi hi tējasvī
dharṣaṇaṃ marṣayiṣyati ॥
I guess the elder brother of Lakshmaṇa
does not know that I am here;
if he did, would that man of power
put up with this insult (even for a moment)?

ராகவாய நிவேதயேத் ।
க்ருத்ரராஜோऽபி ஸ ரணே

rāghavāya nivēdayēt ।
gṛdhrarājō'pi sa raṇē
rāvaṇēna nipātitaḥ ॥
Even the king of eagles,
who could have met and told Rāghava
that I had been carried off,
was killed by Rāvaṇa in the fight.

மாம் ததாऽப்யவபத்யதா ।
திஷ்டதா ராவணத்வந்த்வே

kṛtaṃ karma mahattēna
māṃ tathā'bhyavapadyatā ।
tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇadvandvē
vṛddhēnāpi jaṭāyuṣā ॥
Jaṭāyu, indeed did a great deed,
in coming to my rescue and standing
against Rāvaṇa in the duel, aged as he was.

வர்தமாநாம் ஸ ராகவ: ।
அத்ய பாணைரபிக்ருத்த:
குர்யால்லோகமராக்ஷஸம் ॥
yadi māmiha jānīyāt
vartamānāṃ sa rāghavaḥ ।
adya bāṇairabhikruddhaḥ
kuryāllōkamarākṣasam ॥
If only Rāghava knows that I am here,
he would rid this world of all Rakshasas
with his arrows this very day, in his rage.

ஸோஷயேச்ச மஹோததிம் ।
ராவணஸ்ய ச நீசஸ்ய

vidhamēcca purīṃ laṅkām
ṡōṣayēcca mahōdadhim ।
rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya
kīrtiṃ nāma ca nāṡayēt ॥
He would annihilate the city of Laṅkā,
dry up the ocean and shred the
name and fame of the base Rāvaṇa.

5.26.24 ஈ ததோ நிஹதநாதாநாம்
ராக்ஷஸீநாம் க்ருஹே க்ருஹே ।
யதாஹமேவம் ருததீ

tatō nihatanāthānām
rākṣasīnāṃ gṛhē gṛhē ।
yathāhamēvaṃ rudatī
tathā bhūyō na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
With their husbands dead,
Rākshasis in every house would cry endlessly,
just as I do now, without a doubt.
