Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 22
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa tells Seetā that it is because of his love for her that he is not able to harm her and that he could have easily killed her. He reminds her that she has only two more months before she yields to him and goes to bed with him, failing which she would be chopped in the kitchen and served as breakfast for him.
While Seetā is thus being threatened, the Dēva and Gandharva women who are with Rāvaṇa empathize with her through their facial expressions. Finding comfort in their support, Seetā chides Rāvaṇa again and wonders why there is no one who could give proper advice to him. She warns him that he had invited his own death, by abducting her. She insults him by pointing to his cowardly act of stealing of her while Rāma and Lakshmaṇa were away. She tells him that he could hope to stay alive only as long as he doesn’t fall in the line of sight of Rāma.
Enraged, Rāvaṇa instructs the Rākshasis guarding Seetā to subdue her with temptations as well as threats. Meanwhile one of his lovers, Dhānyamālini, comes up to him and implores him to enjoy sporting with her and disregard the pale and miserable Seetā, who is a mere human. She reflects that Seetā, after all, seems not destined to enjoy his riches.
His ego boosted by those words, Rāvaṇa leaves.

Hearing those harsh words of Seetā,
the lord of Rākshasas then said
these very unpleasant words,
to the one who looked so pleasant:

yathā yathā priyaṃ vaktā

The more a man tries to pacify women,
the more they take him for granted.
The more a man tries to please them,
the more they scorn him.

Like a good charioteer controlling runaway horses,
my desire for you is restraining my anger.

Desire, for men, is a weakness;
for they develop affection and a soft corner
towards the very same person who ties them down.

That is why I cannot bring myself to hurt you,
O you of lovely face, even though
you deserve to be humiliated and killed
for still being interested in the one
who pretends to lead a holy life in exile!

tēṣu tēṣu vadhō yuktaḥ

O Maithili! You deserve to be
killed mercilessly and repeatedly
for each and every one of
the harsh words you said to me.

taken over by raging anger,
said a few more words:

mama tvaṃ varavarṇini ॥
I shall respect the respite I have granted you
and wait for two months more.
You will, then, go to bed with me,
O you of lovely complexion!

If you do not like to accept me as your husband
even after the passing of two months,
you will be chopped in the kitchen for my breakfast.

Seeing Jānaki thus threatened
by the lord of Rākshasas,
the Dēva and Gandharva women
(who accompanied Rāvaṇa)
felt sad and rolled their eyes.

tarjitāṃ tēna rakṣasā ॥
Some with the (silent) movement of their lips and
others with expressions on their faces and in their eyes,
tried to comfort Seetā, as she was thus
being threatened by the Rākshasa.

uvācātmahitaṃ vākyam
vṛttaṡauṇḍīryagarvitam ॥
Comforted by them, Seetā said these
poignant and spirited words that
betrayed the strength of her character,
to the lord of Rākshasas:

nūnaṃ na tē janaḥ kaṡcit
asti niḥṡrēyasē rataḥ ।
nivārayati yō na tvām
karmaṇō'smādvigarhitāt ॥
There certainly seems to be no one
interested enough in your well-being here
to dissuade you from this reproachable course.

ṡacīmiva ṡacīpatēḥ ।
tvadanyastriṣu lōkēṣu
prārthayēnmanasāpi kaḥ ॥
Even the thought of desiring
me, the wife of a Dharmātma,
would not cross anyone’s mind other than yours,
like that of desiring Ṡaci, the wife of Indra.

uktavānasi yatpāpam
kva gatastasya mōkṣyasē ॥
O base Rākshasa! Where can you escape to,
having said these sinful words to
the wife of Rāma, of immense power?

ṡaṡaṡca saddṛṡō yudhi ।
tathā mātaṅgavadrāmaḥ
tvaṃ nīcaḥ ṡaṡavat smṛtaḥ ॥
It would be like a proud elephant
engaged in a fight with a hare!
Think of Rāma as the elephant
and you, base creature, as the hare!

க்ஷிபந்நிஹ ந லஜ்ஜஸே ।

sa tvamikṣvākunāthaṃ vai
kṣipanniha na lajjasē ।
cakṣuṣōrviṣayaṃ tasya
na tāvadupagacchasi ॥
Are you not ashamed of ridiculing
the Lord of Ikshwākus, by remaining here
and avoiding falling in his line of sight!

kṣitau na patitē kasmāt
māmanārya nirīkṣitaḥ ॥
O ignoble one! I cannot understand
why those ugly black and yellow eyes of yours
do not fall off even as you stare at me.

And why does your tongue not fall off,
when you address me, the wife of that Dharmātma
and daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha, like this?

tapasaṡcānupālanāt ।
na tvāṃ kurmi daṡagrīva
bhasma bharmārha tējasā ॥
You deserve to be reduced to
ashes through my yogic power,
but I refrain from doing so, O Ten-necked One,
because I abide by the precepts of Tapa and
because I do not have the permission of Rāma.

vidhistava vadhārthāya
vihitō nātra saṃṡayaḥ ॥
You could possibly not have been able
to abduct me, who belongs to the sagacious Rāma;
Providence must have, without a doubt,
arranged so to bring death upon you.

பார்யாமமிததேஜஸ: ।
உக்தவாநஸி யத்பாபம்
க்வ கதஸ்தஸ்ய மோக்ஷ்யஸே ॥
rākṣasādhama rāmasya
bhāryāmamitatējasaḥ ।
uktavānasi yatpāpam
kva gatastasya mōkṣyasē ॥
O base Rākshasa! Where can you escape to,
having said these sinful words to
the wife of Rāma, of immense power?

5.22.16 ஈ யதா த்ருப்தஸ்ச மாதங்க:
ஸஸஸ்ச ஸத்த்ருஸோ யுதி ।
ததா மாதங்கவத்ராம:
த்வம் நீச: ஸஸவத் ஸ்ம்ருத: ॥
yathā dṛptaṡca mātaṅgaḥ
ṡaṡaṡca saddṛṡō yudhi ।
tathā mātaṅgavadrāmaḥ
tvaṃ nīcaḥ ṡaṡavat smṛtaḥ ॥
It would be like a proud elephant
engaged in a fight with a hare!
Think of Rāma as the elephant
and you, base creature, as the hare!

5.22.17 ஈ ஸ த்வமிக்ஷ்வாகுநாதம் வை
க்ஷிபந்நிஹ ந லஜ்ஜஸே ।
சக்ஷுஷோர்விஷயம் தஸ்ய
ந தாவதுபகச்சஸி ॥
sa tvamikṣvākunāthaṃ vai
kṣipanniha na lajjasē ।
cakṣuṣōrviṣayaṃ tasya
na tāvadupagacchasi ॥
Are you not ashamed of ridiculing
the Lord of Ikshwākus, by remaining here
and avoiding falling in his line of sight!

5.22.18 ஈ இமே தே நயநே க்ரூரே
விரூபே க்ருஷ்ணபிங்கலே ।
க்ஷிதௌ ந பதிதே கஸ்மாத்
மாமநார்ய நிரீக்ஷித: ॥
imē tē nayanē krūrē
virūpē kṛṣṇapiṅgalē ।
kṣitau na patitē kasmāt
māmanārya nirīkṣitaḥ ॥
O ignoble one! I cannot understand
why those ugly black and yellow eyes of yours
do not fall off even as you stare at me.

5.22.19 ஈ தஸ்ய தர்மாத்மந: பத்நீம்
ஸ்நுஷாம் தஸரதஸ்ய ச ।
கதம் வ்யாஹரதோ மாம் தே
ந ஜிஹ்வா வ்யவஸீர்யதே ॥
tasya dharmātmanaḥ patnīm
snuṣāṃ daṡarathasya ca ।
kathaṃ vyāharatō māṃ tē
na jihvā vyavaṡīryatē ॥
And why does your tongue not fall off,
when you address me, the wife of that Dharmātma
and daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha, like this?

5.22.20 ஈ அஸந்தேஸாத்து ராமஸ்ய
தபஸஸ்சாநுபாலநாத் ।
ந த்வாம் குர்மி தஸக்ரீவ
பஸ்ம பர்மார்ஹ தேஜஸா ॥
asandēṡāttu rāmasya
tapasaṡcānupālanāt ।
na tvāṃ kurmi daṡagrīva
bhasma bharmārha tējasā ॥
You deserve to be reduced to
ashes through my yogic power,
but I refrain from doing so, O Ten-necked One,
because I abide by the precepts of Tapa and
because I do not have the permission of Rāma.

5.22.21 ஈ நாபஹர்துமஹம் ஸக்யா
த்வயா ராமஸ்ய தீமத: ।
விதிஸ்தவ வதார்தாய
விஹிதோ நாத்ர ஸம்ஸய: ॥
nāpahartumahaṃ ṡakyā
tvayā rāmasya dhīmataḥ ।
vidhistava vadhārthāya
vihitō nātra saṃṡayaḥ ॥
You could possibly not have been able
to abduct me, who belongs to the sagacious Rāma;
Providence must have, without a doubt,
arranged so to bring death upon you.
