Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 18
In this Sarga, Hanumān watches Rāvaṇa as he comes to the Aṡōka Vana surrounded by many of his beautiful wives and women, all of whom are still under the hangover of drink and sleep. Hanumān is taken aback by Rāvaṇa’s dazzling radiance and watches him, hidden behind the leaves.

The night all but passed, while he,
on his mission of search for Vaidēhi,
watched that Vana full of trees in flower.

He then heard, as the night receded,
the reverberating chants of Vedas by
the Brāhmaṇas among Rakshasas who were
well-versed in the Vedas
including the six ancillary texts,
and seasoned in performing
the most challenging of the Yajñas.

Then the ten-necked (Rāvaṇa),
of mighty arm and immense strength,
woke up to the auspicious sounds
of the musical instruments that were
a delight to the ears and heart.

The powerful lord of Rākshasas
woke up at the regular hour and
(instantly) thought of Vaidēhi,
his loosened raiment and garland
still sagging down.

bibhracchriyamanuttamām ।
tāṃ nagairbahubhirjuṣṭām
sarvapuṣpaphalōpagaiḥ ।
vṛtāṃ puṣkariṇībhiṡca
nānāpuṣpōpaṡōbhitām ।
sadā madaiṡca vihagaiḥ
vicitrāṃ paramādbhutām ।
īhāmṛgaiṡca vividhaiḥ
juṣṭāṃ dṛṣṭimanōharaiḥ ।
vīthīḥ saṃprēkṣamāṇaṡca
maṇikāñcanatōraṇāḥ ।
nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇām
phalaiḥ prapatitairvṛtām ।
aṡōkavanikāmēva
prāviṡatsaṃtatadrumām ॥
Adorned with every ornament and
exuding extraordinary opulence,
he then went to the Aṡōka Vana,
which was full of thickets of trees
that gave every kind of flower and fruit,
surrounded by ponds and splendid with flowers everywhere,
marvelous with its variety of amorous birds,
filled with pets that were a delight to eyes and hearts
and hordes of many other kinds of animals,
covered with fruits that had fallen everywhere,
watching the streets on the way,
their arches made of gold and encrusted with gems.

Like the women of Dēvas and Gandharvas follow Mahēndra,
a hundred damsels followed
(Rāvaṇa), the descendant of Pulastya.

Some of those women carried golden torches,
some had fly-whisks in their hands
and others, palm-leaf fans.

Others walked in front
carrying water in gold pitchers,
while others walked behind
carrying swords and small mats.

One lovely woman carried a pitcher studded with gems
that was filled with a drink
in her right hand, walking on his right side.

Another walked behind him holding
an umbrella with a gold handle
that looked like the royal swan
and was bright as the full moon.

rāvaṇasyōttamāḥ striyaḥ ।
anujagmuḥ patiṃ vīram
ghanaṃ vidyullatā iva ॥
Their eyes still heavy with intoxication,
the foremost among the women of Rāvaṇa
followed their valorous husband
like flashes of lightning following a cloud.

நார்யோ மதிரலோசநா: ।
பஹுமாநாச்ச காமாச்ச
ப்ரியா பார்யாஸ்தமந்வயு: ॥
vyāviddhahārakēyūrāḥ
samāmṛditavarṇakāḥ ।
samāgalitakēṡāntāḥ
sasvēdavadanā stathā ।
ghūrṇantyō madaṡēṣēṇa
nidrayā ca ṡubhānanāḥ ।
svēdakliṣṭāṅgakusumāḥ
sumālyākulamūrdhajāḥ ।
prayāntaṃ naiṛtapatim
nāryō madiralōcanāḥ ।
bahumānācca kāmācca
priyā bhāryāstamanvayuḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa’s beloved queens,
the women of intoxicating eyes,
followed, with love and regard,
their beloved, the lord of Rākshasas.
They were still unsteady from the
lingering effect of drink and sleep,
with their necklaces and armlets slipping,
creams on their bodies rubbed off,
hair hanging loose and garlands entangled in the tresses,
faces covered with perspiration
and flowers spoiled by the perspiration.

பதிஸ்தாஸாம் மஹாபல: ।
ஸீதாஸக்தமநா மந்தோ

patistāsāṃ mahābalaḥ ।
sītāsaktamanā mandō
mandāñcitagatirbabhau ॥
Their husband, of immense strength,
completely taken over by lust,
his mind blunted and focused on nothing but Seetā,
walked slowly, with a stylish gait.

நூபுராணாம் ச நிஸ்வநம் ।

nūpurāṇāṃ ca nisvanam ।

sa kapirmārutātmajaḥ ॥
Then the ape, the son of Vāyu,
heard the jingling of girdles and
the tinkling of anklets of those lovely women.

அசிந்த்யபலபௌருஷம் ।

acintyabalapauruṣam ।
dvāradēṡamanuprāptam
dadarṡa hanumān kapiḥ ॥
Then Hanumān, the Vānara also saw him (Rāvaṇa)
whose strength and pride were beyond imagination
and whose accomplishments were beyond comparison,
come near the area of the entrance.

His features were brightly lit on every side
by the light of the many lamps of fragrant oil
that were carried in front of him.

samakṣamiva kandarpam
apaviddhaṡarāsanam ॥
Full of lust, pride and arrogance
and with his curvy eyes turned red,
he looked like Manmatha himself
albeit with the bow cast aside.

vimuktaṃ saktamaṅgadē ॥
He was pulling up, in a stylish manner,
his exquisite and spotlessly clean upper garment
that was as white as the froth of churned Amṛt,
as it slipped off and stuck to his armlet. Is this where Indian film makers get such ideas from?

Hiding on the leafy branch and
covered with leaves and flowers,
he felt that Rāvaṇa was coming closer,
and positioned himself to watch him closely.

Scanning around, that elephant among Vānaras
saw the women of Rāvaṇa who were
endowed with great beauty and youth.

Surrounded by those women,
that charming king of great fame
then entered that pleasure garden
that was reverberating with
the sounds of birds and beasts.

ṡaṅkukarṇō mahābalaḥ ।
tēna viṡravasaḥ putraḥ
sa dṛṣṭō rākṣasādhipaḥ ।
vṛtaḥ paramanārībhiḥ
tārābhiriva candramāḥ ।
taṃ dadarṡa mahātējāḥ
tējōvantaṃ mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara of supreme power saw
the mighty strong and drunken lord of Rākshasas,
the immensely powerful son of Viṡravasu
adorned with a variety of ornaments
and ears looking like conch shells
as he was surrounded by those excellent women
like moon by the stars.

iti sañcintya vānaraḥ ।
avaplutō mahātējā
hanumānmārutātmajaḥ ॥
Hanumān, the son of Vāyu,
a Vānara of immense power,
thought that he, of mighty arm,
must be Rāvaṇa, and jumped down.

Even though he himself was of fierce radiance,
he was taken aback by his (Rāvaṇa’s) radiance,
and remained hidden covered by the leaves.

suṡrōṇīṃ saṃhatastanīm ।
didṛkṣurasitāpāṅgām
upāvartata rāvaṇaḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa came closer, wanting to get a sight of
that woman of beautiful Kaṭee and black tresses
whose breasts were closely pressing against each other
and the ends of whose eye lashes were pitch black.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே அஷ்டாதஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭādaṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the eighteenth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
