    Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 16
    In this Sarga, Hanumān reflects on the pitiful plight of Seetā because of whom Vāli was killed, Sugreeva regained his kingdom, he crossed the ocean. He also reflects on how difficult it is for Rāma to hold on to his life without her and how she was holding on to life with the hope of getting reunited with him.

    praṡasya tu praṡastavyām
    sītāṃ tāṃ haripuṅgavaḥ ।
    guṇābhirāmaṃ rāmaṃ ca
    punaṡcintāparō'bhavat ॥
    Having praised Seetā, who deserved all the praise,
    and Rāma who endeared himself to all by his virtues,
    the bull among Vānaras was again overcome by sorrow.

    பாஷ்பபர்யாகுலேக்ஷண: ।

    sa muhūrtamiva dhyātvā
    bāṣpaparyākulēkṣaṇaḥ ।
    sītāmāṡritya tējasvī
    hanūmānvilalāpa ha ॥
    After pondering for a while,
    the powerful Hanumān lamented the fate of Seetā,
    his eyes filled with tears.

    லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய குருப்ரியா ।
    யதி ஸீதாऽऽபி து:கார்தா

    mānyā guruvinītasya
    lakṣmaṇasya gurupriyā ।
    yadi sītā''pi duḥkhārtā
    kālō hi duratikramaḥ ॥
    No one can escape the vagaries of time;
    how else is it that Seetā,
    who was endearing to all the elders,
    and who was held in high esteem by Lakshmaṇa
    who grew under the tutelage of elders,
    has to suffer like this?

    லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய ச தீமத: ।

    rāmasya vyavasāyajñā
    lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ ।
    nātyarthaṃ kṣubhyatē dēvī
    gaṅgēva jaladāgamē ॥
    Confident of the efforts Rāma would put in
    along with the sagacious Lakshmana,
    this lady (seems to) stay unperturbed,
    like Gaṅgā even under heavy rains.

    துல்யாபிஜநலக்ஷணாம் ।
    ராகவோऽர்ஹதி வைதேஹீம்

    tulyaṡīlavayōvṛttām
    tulyābhijanalakṣaṇām ।
    rāghavō'rhati vaidēhīm
    taṃ cēyamasitēkṣaṇā ॥
    Her character, age, conduct, ancestry and the
    auspicious marks (that she bore on her person),
    rivalling his, Rāghava is a perfect match for Vaidēhi
    and this black eyed beauty, for him.

    லோககாந்தாமிவ ஸ்ரியம் ।
    ஜகாம மநஸா ராமம்

    tāṃ dṛṣṭvā navahēmābhām
    lōkakāntāmiva ṡriyam ।
    jagāma manasā rāmam
    vacanaṃ cēdamabravīt ॥
    While his eyes beheld her,
    who was glowing like freshly molten gold and
    like goddess Lakshmi who enchants the world,
    his mind was filled with the thoughts of Rāma
    propelling him to say these words:

    ஹதோ வாலீ மஹாபல: ।
    ராவணப்ரதிமோ வீர்யே

    asyā hētōrviṡālākṣyā
    hatō vālī mahābalaḥ ।
    rāvaṇapratimō vīryē
    kabandhaṡca nipātitaḥ ॥
    It is because of this wide-eyed one, that
    Vāli of immense strength was slain and
    Kabandha, an equal to Rāvaṇa
    in valor, was struck down.

    5.16.8 ஈ விராதஸ்ச ஹத: ஸங்க்யே
    ராக்ஷஸோ பீமவிக்ரம: ।
    வநே ராமேண விக்ரம்ய
    மஹேந்த்ரேணேவ ஸம்பர: ॥
    virādhaṡca hataḥ saṅkhyē
    rākṣasō bhīmavikramaḥ ।
    vanē rāmēṇa vikramya
    mahēndrēṇēva ṡambaraḥ ॥
    (It is because of this wide-eyed one, that)
    Virādha, the Rākshasa of frightening valor
    was killed in the battle by the prowess of Rāma,
    as was Ṡambara by the great Indra.

    5.16.9 ஈ சதுர்தஸ ஸஹஸ்ராணி
    ரக்ஷஸாம் பீமகர்மணாம் ।
    நிஹதாநி ஜநஸ்தாநே

    caturdaṡa sahasrāṇi
    rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ।
    nihatāni janasthānē
    ṡarairagniṡikhōpamaiḥ ॥
    (It is because of this wide-eyed one, that)
    fourteen thousand Rakshasas of terrible deeds
    were annihilated in the Janasthāna
    by arrows that fell like tongues of flame.

    த்ரிஸிராஸ்ச நிபாதித: ।
    தூஷணஸ்ச மஹாதேஜா

    kharaṡca nihatasaṅkhyē
    triṡirāṡca nipātitaḥ ।
    dūṣaṇaṡca mahātējā
    rāmēṇa viditātmanā ॥
    (It is because of this wide-eyed one, that)
    Khara was killed in the fight,
    Triṡira was struck down and Dūshaṇa as well,
    by Rāma who is well known for what he is.

    5.16.11 ஈ ஐஸ்வர்யம் வாநராணாம் ச
    துர்லபம் வாலிபாலிதம் ।
    அஸ்யா நிமித்தே ஸுக்ரீவ:
    ப்ராப்தவாந் லோகஸத்க்ருதம் ॥
    aiṡvaryaṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca
    durlabhaṃ vālipālitam ।
    asyā nimittē sugrīvaḥ
    prāptavān lōkasatkṛtam ॥
    It is because of her that Sugreeva
    attained the esteemed lordship over the
    Vānaras who were under the rule of Vāli (till then),
    which would have otherwise been next to impossible. We normally think of the story of Rāmāyaṇa from the perspective of Rāma or Seetā or Rāvaṇa. But here is how it looks from the perspective of Sugreeva, which is certainly an interesting one.

    ஸ்ரீமாந்நதநதீபதி: ।
    அஸ்யா ஹேதோர்விஸாலாக்ஷ்யா:
    புரீ சேயமவேக்ஷிதா ॥
    sāgaraṡca mayā krāntaḥ
    ṡrīmānnadanadīpatiḥ ।
    asyā hētōrviṡālākṣyāḥ
    purī cēyamavēkṣitā ॥
    It is because of this lady of wide-eyes
    that the ocean of many riches,
    lord of the east and west flowing rivers,
    was crossed and this city is being visited by me.

    5.16.13 ஈ யதி ராம: ஸமுத்ராந்தாம்
    மேதிநீம் பரிவர்தயேத் ।
    அஸ்யா: க்ருதே ஜகச்சாபி
    யுக்தமித்யேவ மே மதி: ॥
    yadi rāmaḥ samudrāntām
    mēdinīṃ parivartayēt ।
    asyāḥ kṛtē jagaccāpi
    yuktamityēva mē matiḥ ॥
    I think Rāma would certainly be justified
    even in turning this entire earth bordered by the oceans,
    nay the entire world, upside down.

    5.16.14 ஈ ராஜ்யம் வா த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு
    ஸீதா வா ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
    த்ரைலோக்யராஜ்யம் ஸகலம்
    ஸீதாயா நாப்நுயாத்கலாம் ॥
    rājyaṃ vā triṣu lōkēṣu
    sītā vā janakātmajā ।
    trailōkyarājyaṃ sakalam
    sītāyā nāpnuyātkalām ॥
    If one were to weigh Seetā, the daughter of Janaka,
    against the sovereignty over the three worlds,
    it would not amount even to one-sixteenth of Seetā’s worth. This Ṡlōka, in a weird way, justifies the actions of both Rāma and Rāvaṇa, at once.

    5.16.16 ஈ இயம் ஸா தர்மஸீலஸ்ய
    மைதிலஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
    ஸுதா ஜநகராஜஸ்ய
    ஸீதா பர்த்ருத்ருடவ்ரதா ।
    உத்திதா மேதிநீம் பித்த்வா
    க்ஷேத்ரே ஹலமுகக்ஷதே ।
    பத்மரேணுநிபை: கீர்ணா
    ஸுபை: கேதாரபாம்ஸுபி: ॥
    iyaṃ sā dharmaṡīlasya
    maithilasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    sutā janakarājasya
    sītā bhartṛdṛḍhavratā ।
    utthitā mēdinīṃ bhittvā
    kṣētrē halamukhakṣatē ।
    padmarēṇunibhaiḥ kīrṇā
    ṡubhaiḥ kēdārapāmsubhiḥ ॥
    This Seetā, of firm devotion to her husband,
    is the daughter of Mahātma Janaka, the king of Mithila
    for whom adherence to Dharma is second nature.
    She rose up searing apart the earth
    when the grounds were struck by the ploughshare,
    covered in lotus-pollen-like
    auspicious dust of the farm grounds.

    5.16.17 ஈ விக்ராந்தஸ்யார்யஸீலஸ்ய
    ஸம்யுகேஷ்வநிவர்திந: ।
    ஸ்நுஷா தஸரதஸ்யைஷா
    ஜ்யேஷ்டா ராஜ்ஞோ யஸஸ்விநீ ॥
    vikrāntasyāryaṡīlasya
    saṃyugēṣvanivartinaḥ ।
    snuṣā daṡarathasyaiṣā
    jyēṣṭhā rājñō yaṡasvinī ॥
    This renowned one is the eldest of
    the daughters-in-law of king Daṡaratha
    of great prowess and noble character
    who never turned his back in a battle.

    5.16.18 ஈ தர்மஜ்ஞஸ்ய க்ருதஜ்ஞஸ்ய
    ராமஸ்ய விதிதாத்மந: ।
    இயம் ஸா தயிதா பார்யா
    ராக்ஷஸீவஸமாகதா ॥
    dharmajñasya kṛtajñasya
    rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ।
    iyaṃ sā dayitā bhāryā
    rākṣasīvaṡamāgatā ॥
    This beloved wife of Rāma who is a
    Dharmajña and known for his virtues
    and for remembering every favor he receives
    has, alas, fallen into the hands of Rākshasis!

    5.16.19 ஈ ஸர்வாந் போகாந்பரித்யஜ்ய
    பர்த்ருஸ்நேஹபலாத்க்ருதா ।
    அசிந்தயித்வா து:காநி
    ப்ரவிஷ்டா நிர்ஜநம் வநம் ॥
    sarvān bhōgānparityajya
    bhartṛsnēhabalātkṛtā ।
    acintayitvā duḥkhāni
    praviṣṭā nirjanaṃ vanam ॥
    Overpowered by her love for her husband,
    she, with no concern for the hardships,
    went into the uninhabited Vana,
    giving up every luxury.

    பர்த்ருஸுஸ்ரூஷணே ரதா ।
    யா பராம் பஜதே ப்ரீதிம்

    saṃtuṣṭā phalamūlēna
    bhartṛṡuṡrūṣaṇē ratā ।
    yā parāṃ bhajatē prītim
    vanē''pi bhavanē yathā ॥
    Content with the roots and fruits and
    engrossed in serving her husband,
    she lived as happily in the Vana
    as she did in the palace.

    5.16.21 ஈ ஸேயம் கநகவர்ணாங்கீ
    நித்யம் ஸுஸ்மிதபாஷிணீ ।
    ஸஹதே யாதநாமேதாம்

    sēyaṃ kanakavarṇāṅgī
    nityaṃ susmitabhāṣiṇī ।
    sahatē yātanāmētām
    anarthānāmabhāginī ॥
    She, of golden complexion,
    who always speaks sporting a pleasant smile,
    who does not deserve the misfortune of these hardships,
    alas, had to submit to these difficulties!

    5.16.22 ஈ இமாம் து ஸீலஸம்பந்நாம்
    த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹதி ராகவ: ।
    ராவணேந ப்ரமதிதாம்

    imāṃ tu ṡīlasampannām
    draṣṭumarhati rāghavaḥ ।
    rāvaṇēna pramathitām
    prapāmiva pipāsitaḥ ॥
    Like a thirsty person looking for a watershed,
    true, Rāghava is looking for
    this lady of great character
    who is being harassed by Rāvaṇa.

    5.16.23 ஈ அஸ்யா நூநம் புநர்லாபாத்
    ராகவ: ப்ரீதிமேஷ்யதி ।
    ராஜா ராஜ்யபரிப்ரஷ்ட:
    புந: ப்ராப்யேவ மேதிநீம் ॥
    asyā nūnaṃ punarlābhāt
    rāghavaḥ prītimēṣyati ।
    rājā rājyaparibhraṣṭaḥ
    punaḥ prāpyēva mēdinīm ॥
    Rāghava would certainly be
    exhilarated by regaining Seetā,
    like a king who lost his kingdom
    would be, by regaining his land.

    ஹீநா பந்துஜநேந ச ।
    தாரயத்யாத்மநோ தேஹம்

    kāmabhōgaiḥ parityaktā
    hīnā bandhujanēna ca ।
    dhārayatyātmanō dēham
    tatsamāgamakāṅkṣiṇī ॥
    Abandoned by every pleasure and luxury
    and having no kith and kin beside her,
    she is clinging to her life, eagerly
    waiting to be reunited with him.

    5.16.25 ஈ நைஷா பஸ்யதி ராக்ஷஸ்யோ
    நேமாந்புஷ்பபலத்ருமாந் ।

    naiṣā paṡyati rākṣasyō
    nēmānpuṣpaphaladrumān ।
    ēkasthahṛdayā nūnam
    rāmamēvānupaṡyati ॥
    She is neither seeing the Rākshasis
    nor the trees that are in fruit and flower.
    She, for sure, is seeing only Rāma
    who alone dwells in her heart.

    5.16.26 ஈ பர்தா நாம பரம் நார்யா
    பூஷணம் பூஷணாதபி ।
    ஏஷா து ரஹிதா தேந
    பூஷணார்ஹா ந ஸோபதே ॥
    bhartā nāma paraṃ nāryā
    bhūṣaṇaṃ bhūṣaṇādapi ।
    ēṣā tu rahitā tēna
    bhūṣaṇārhā na ṡōbhatē ॥
    A husband is indeed a wife’s supreme ornament,
    far beyond any other ornament.
    Lacking him, she does not shine as she should,
    though she is worthy of every adornment.

    5.16.27 ஈ துஷ்கரம் குருதே ராமோ
    ஹீநோ யதநயா ப்ரபு: ।
    தாரயத்யாத்மநோ தேஹம்

    duṣkaraṃ kurutē rāmō
    hīnō yadanayā prabhuḥ ।
    dhārayatyātmanō dēham
    na duḥkhēnāvasīdati ॥
    Rāma, the lord, is doing the impossible by
    clinging on to his life and not
    sinking under grief, bereft of her!

    ஸதபத்ரநிபேக்ஷணாம் ।
    ஸுகார்ஹாம் து:கிதாம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
    மமாபி வ்யதிதம் மந: ॥
    imāmasitakēṡāntām
    ṡatapatranibhēkṣaṇām ।
    sukhārhāṃ duḥkhitāṃ dṛṣṭvā
    mamāpi vyathitaṃ manaḥ ॥
    Even my heart is harrowed, seeing her
    of lotus-petal-eyes and pitch black tresses,
    who deserves all comforts, grieving like this!

    5.16.29 ஈ க்ஷிதிக்ஷமா புஷ்கரஸந்நிபாக்ஷீ
    யா ரக்ஷிதா ராகவலக்ஷ்மணாப்யாம் ।
    ஸா ராக்ஷஸீபிர்விக்ருதேக்ஷணாபி:
    ஸம்ரக்ஷ்யதே ஸம்ப்ரதி வ்ருக்ஷமூலே ॥
    kṣitikṣamā puṣkarasannibhākṣī
    yā rakṣitā rāghavalakṣmaṇābhyām ।
    sā rākṣasībhirvikṛtēkṣaṇābhiḥ
    saṃrakṣyatē samprati vṛkṣamūlē ॥
    She of lotus eyes and earth-like forbearance,
    who was formerly protected by Rāghava and Lakshmaṇa,
    languishes now at the foot of a tree
    guarded by Rākshasis of crooked eyes.

    5.16.30 ஈ ஹிமஹதநலிநீவ நஷ்டஸோபா
    வ்யஸநபரம்பரயா நிபீட்யமாநா ।
    ஸஹசரரஹிதேவ சக்ரவாகீ
    ஜநகஸுதா க்ருபணாம் தஸாம் ப்ரபந்நா ॥
    himahatanalinīva naṣṭaṡōbhā
    vyasanaparamparayā nipīḍyamānā ।
    sahacararahitēva cakravākī
    janakasutā kṛpaṇāṃ daṡāṃ prapannā ॥
    With all her radiance lost
    like that of a lotus creeper bitten by frost,
    tormented by one hardship after another,
    the daughter of Janaka has fallen
    into this pitiful plight,
    like a female Cakravāka deprived of her mate.

    ஸோகம் த்ருடம் வை ஜநயந்த்யஸோகா: ।

    அப்யுத்திதோ நைகஸஹஸ்ரரஸ்மி: ॥
    asyā hi puṣpāvanatāgraṡākhāḥ
    ṡōkaṃ dṛḍhaṃ vai janayantyaṡōkāḥ ।
    himavyapāyēna ca ṡītaraṡmiḥ
    abhyutthitō naikasahasraraṡmi: ॥
    Certainly, these Aṡōka trees,
    their boughs bent under the weight of flowers,
    are only accentuating her grief;
    and so are the cool rays of the thousand-rayed-moon
    rising after the dissipation of the mist.

    5.16.32 ஈ இத்யேவமர்தம் கபிரந்வவேக்ஷ்ய
    ஸீதேயமித்யேவ நிவிஷ்டபுத்தி: ।
    ஸம்ஸ்ரித்ய தஸ்மிந்நிஷஸாத வ்ருக்ஷே
    பலீ ஹரீணாம்ருஷபஸ்தரஸ்வீ ॥
    ityēvamarthaṃ kapiranvavēkṣya
    sītēyamityēva niviṣṭabuddhi: ।
    saṃṡritya tasminniṣasāda vṛkṣē
    balī harīṇāmṛṣabhastarasvī ॥
    Having examined the situation thus,
    and feeling sure that it was Seetā,
    the bull among Vānaras,
    of immense strength and power
    remained there, right on that tree.
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸுந்தரகாண்டே ஷோடஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    sundarakāṇḍē ṣōḍaṡassargaḥ॥
    Thus concludes the sixteenth Sarga
    in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
